I've browsed the biography/ autobiography/memoir section many times in the last several years and they rarely have recent books, at least in that section. I visited recently and they had a handful of newer releases. Their book inventory is online for browsing now. I can always find something to read at Books & Co and the price is right! Most books are in excellent shape. Plus, with trade credit it makes the price even better. Also, in addition to books, they sell both coffee and bakery items and a variety of small gift items. My kids are somewhat obsessed with their section of small unique toys (fidget spinners, squishy animals, etc) so it's a no-brainer to come here for birthday gifts and stocking stuffers. Sweet little shop! I found it yesterday on a friend's recommendation. I had fun browsing and luckily stumbled upon the very book that I need for my book club next month. I regret that I did not have time to try the coffee; next time! I'm so glad places like this exist. We stopped by for a latte when we were at the vegan festival. The space was joined somewhat with an open door with the restaurant next door, and a cafe at the back? Where we picked up our latte. I love such spaces where there is a cafe attached to a book store where you can browse, and it has comfortable chairs upon which to lounge. read more

Adorable little place where it's very easy to while away a few hours. The cafe closes a little earlier than I would like, but the coffee is good and there's a fairly wide (and frequently revolving) selection of used books. I also love a good squashy armchair and this place has plenty of those. They're light on the food options but don't mind if you bring some food in from the place next door or the soup shop down the street. read more

Books & Co is a quaint little bookshop on the edge of Hamden. It hosts a small array of books, mismatched furniture, and a very modest coffee stand in the rear (called Legal Grounds). They also sell various jewelry pieces and little knickknacks (eg magnets, bookmarks). It is cute and comfortable - and it has a bit of a 'second hand store' feeling to it, a little cluttered and haphazard (not a bad thing... just a thing). There are also quite a few little signs with somewhat scolding requests regarding cell phone use, outside beverages, etc - again not bad, but a thing. It is likely a nice place to read or study - assuming the business proprietor won't hustle you out (but I haven't studied here yet, so I will have to follow this up with an updated review). There are a few tiny tables with wooden seats, which will accommodate most people's dates, study hours, relaxing time, etc. I'd rank this establishment as a 3.75/5 (reserving the right to update my review to a possibly higher rating). Verdict: All in all, it's a nice little bookstore/coffee shop - I plan to return sometime soon to study (I'll let you know how it goes). read more

This place is absolutely perfect! warm, cozy, quiet, old, but in the best possible way...everything I love about a good book store. I'm studying for my GRE here and getting so much good quality work done that I took a break to give a review. For anyone that needs to escape their apartment for a change of environment, come to Books & Company, get a delicious coffee and cuddle up with a good book in the most comfortable old couch! You know I *want* to like this place I really do but I've been in several times and have just not been impressed. The owner was really mean when I was trying to "trade in" books. I understand that she has to be picky due to space issues but she was downright rude when we tried to even give a few books to her. Additionally, the credit you receive for the store only allows you to use credit for half the price of the book and you have to pay cash for the remaining portion. When I tried to use the credits I had received many of the books are marked that you cannot use credit at all. I was there a few weeks ago and the person manning the coffee area was just hanging out with her high school friends. They were loud and really annoying. It didn't fit the cute, casual bookshop feel I was hoping for. So, while I love the idea of a independent used bookstore, Books & Co completely misses the mark. read more

Love to randomly stop in to browse this little place. They have a good selection of books as well as tables full of cute gifts and adorable jewelry. The staff is so friendly and the little coffee shop is great! It's perfect for sitting down with a good cup of coffee to read either alone or with friends. We are big fans of this place! read more

I love really old book stores. Being able to score a good read for my commute for under $5 is winning in my opinion. I was just a little upset that their horror and science fiction section was so slim. It was mostly filled with really crappy YA series. So I ended up buying The Vampire Diaries, Book 1 for $3. Shut up! It was the only thing they had, and I didn't want to leave empty handed. However, if you're really into mysteries and romance, they have a crap load. They also have a small coffee shop in the store. Not going to lie, I will probably be back on one of my trips to Dixwell Avenue just to find out if they've got anything new. read more

Besides being a great used book store; Books & Co. offers beautiful hand beaded jewelry by the owner as well as an assortment of other great NEW gift items and stationary. They have the best selection of greeting cards around. I've had the good fortune to find an autographed book by one of my favorite authors, to receive some of the jewelry as gifts and to get credit to spend on books to boot! So I found this place on one of my aimless drives. I was feeling pretty miserable the entire day, and the only thing I wanted to do was drive and have a cup of coffee. So i'm about a half into my drive, I don't want dunkin doughnuts, there isn't a Star Bucks around...and i see this sign while i'm at a red light, a big red one in the side window of the shop that says "Coffee". So after weighing my options for a minute i decided id give it a shop. So i park in the back lot, and walk in. Now when you walk in, you're instantly hit with how cozy this place is. Walking in from the back, you are greeted by a couple tables (in my case, a couple guys were doing some calculus there, while chatting with the ladies behind the counter), and a giant chalkboard behind the bar with the daily specials. From what the girls behind the bar told me, its all fair trade. And from my experience, its all delicious. If you're on the go they'll give you a travel mug, if you're not, then you get one of these old-diner style mugs; the real thick kind that holds the heat. Off to the left were shelves and shelves of old books, mixed with some contemporary titles. Lots of author-signed titles, and the smell of old books just filled half the store. Honestly, walking into this store today turned it all around for me. I left there feeling grateful for finding such a gem. I'm really happy there are places like this left in the world. I'll definitely be bringing friends the next time i come! read more

A lovely, cozy, local book store with a wide variety of second-hand books. My favorite book store in the area, I often sit down for hours at a time at one of the many tables or couches to get some work done, while chatting with the friendly staff throughout the day. Also has sections of mass market: mysteries, thrillers, etc. Very inviting to sit and stay awhile, have coffee, pastry. Before browsing their wonderful selection of used books (Most are in excellent condition.), grab a cup o' joe at the wonderful cafe, which serves delicious cakes and muffins as well. Books are well-organized (The fiction section is especially large.), and the space itself is cozy and inviting. One can sit, sip, and get lost in a book or good conversation. Of course, the staff is friendly and helpful. Also, one can exchange books for store credit. Since I've found many gems here (modern and canonical fiction, art, history, memoirs, biographies, etc.), I'm thankful for their frequent buyer card-- make certain to ask about it. read more

The bookshop is OK even if it does not have a large selection. I was a regular here, usually doing work on my laptop and ordering a cappuccino from their coffee shop, Legal Grounds. After I had ordered a coffee, I asked for hot water because I had my own brand of tea which the coffee shop does not have. The woman behind the counter was really rude and told me "Do you have your own tea? This is a coffee shop; it's how we stay in business". After I told her that I had already purchased a drink and that they did not have my brand of coffee alternative, she gave me a mean look. No, the way you stay in business is by being generous to your regular customers! I should also say that the owner of the store is also rather rude. I like this place to work but the rudeness of the owner and some of the staff makes me think that I should not go back to this place. read more

This cozy books-and-things shop offers seating and snacks to make this a comfortable spot to find half-price books in whole-price condition. I have sent my kids to trade in good-condition books to give them credit for buying more. (It's a simple way to clear house, let them handle some of the work, and keep them reading.) This place is a bit weird. It should be better than it is. In terms of selection, it's really hit or miss. The environment is dated and has an odd smell. The staff is incredibly friendly and helpful, but the owner is rude and standoffish and seems more interested in selling her jewelry than books. Books & Company is not just my favorite bookstore, nor my favorite shop in the area: it's my favorite store altogether. There, I find high-quality used (and occasionally new) books from a wide and current selection; beautiful offbeat greeting cards, stationery, baby gifts, and scarves; one-of-a-kind jewelry items (silver with genuine gemstones or Austrian crystals) handmade by two gifted craftspersons; and coffee with home-baked goodies. And even better than the "Books" is the "& Company": the congenial owner and assistants who know my book tastes and recommend others I might like; the comfortable, welcoming space in which I have met friends and students and held small committee meetings, and in which I enjoy the peace to read quietly or work on my laptop. I live sixteen miles north of Books & Company. Despite the distance, I have been a patron for at least ten years, and plan to continue meeting family members and friends, purchasing gifts and of course books, and enjoying the atmosphere and Legal Grounds coffee there for decades longer. Among its other delights, Books & Company hosts interesting talks (we enjoyed one on the Bayeux Tapestries), demonstrations (Tai Chi, Mobius scarf knitting, jewelry making), and poetry readings ("A Child's Christmas in Wales"). The shop is my first choice for informal meetings with colleagues, reconnecting with old friends, buying gifts, and just relaxing with a book and a cappuccino. read more
