My favorite place to buy dog food in Durham. It's a bonus that it's local, but they also have a great selection and have better prices than most of the other stores in the area. Barnes is an exceptional store. It has food, treats, toys and gear for a variety of animals (including birds), plus garden decorations and even hand crafted jewelry! It's the cheapest place to buy our cat's raw food, and they offer membership discounts on certain items (such as kitty litter and pet food) once you hit a threshold of number of items you've purchased! Not BOGO, but more like buy 15 get one. I'm just guessing on the number, it's probably less than 15, but I'm always happily surprised when the cashier says my bag of food or litter is free! read more

Either way, I was surprised by how slim their selection of seeds was, back in late Spring when I stopped in. The staff there is friendly, helpful, and welcoming. I have been shopping at barnes for years.....garden equipment, pottery, pet supplies etc. It has been my "go to place", until now. Unfortunately, recently I saw several new aversive pet "training" products including shock collars, prong collars, ridiculously heavy short chain leashes (used for neck/ chest strengthening in preparation for fighting) and electric fencing which have a very high failure rates, resulting in pets getting out of the electrified area due to distractions, but not wanting to re enter...due to the shock received when crossing the "fence". I can not believe Jason and the other staff knowingly promote aversive training methods, as they are always super friendly and welcoming to our dogs at every visit. Please educate yourselves and remove this equpiment from your stock.....their use is not recommended any experienced trainers. Positive reinforcement is data proven and effective. Punishment only reinforces fear and aggression in dogs. I would like to up my star rating asap. read more

Made sure that I knew the benefits of different brands, and made suggestions in terms of what they used for their own dogs. Staff is always pleasant and happy to see you and your pet. My dog loves Barnes! They pet her and give her a free treat each time. Barnes has a local, neighborhood vibe. There is a large variety of high quality dog treats and often new treats to try. I've gotten treats like puppy training treats, probiotic, yak chews, salmon skin and even rabbit ears. Recently we've been trying the stella and chewy raw frozen patties. I love the brands there, they are usually us or canadian companies that make natural dog food/treats. The prices are surprisingly competitive with big box stores like petsmart. Smaller selection than Phydeaux but I think Barnes is better priced for comparable treats and has better customer service/return policy. read more

I really like Barnes Supply. I've been buying my dog food here for a short while, and their selection of both raw and dry food is quite good. I had a brief conversation with one of the salespeople about my dog's bout of GI issues, and then when I came back a few weeks later, she asked me how my dog was doing. It's the little things like that that separate those big, impersonal chains from the more wholesome locally-owned establishments. this place is fantastic. I get all my pet supplies and bird supplies here. They have a great frequent buyer program for all the pet food. All the employees I've dealt with have been excellent, very friendly and knowledgeable about the different options for dog/cat food, flea treatments, bird food, etc. They are also super friendly to my dog whenever I bring her in. They always help you carry things out to your car without you even asking. The selection is fantastic, of food, accessories including toys etc., and treats. Great place with a great staff. My wife and I just got a golden retriever puppy and brought him in for his first "pet store visit." The staff clung to him and Stacey was really helpful giving us information on harnesses, vaccines, training, and dog food. She even gave our pup a few treats that were on the house. Innova, CA Natural, EVO), TOTW, EaglePack Holistic, Solid Gold, Diamond's Premium Edge (and Chicken Soup FTS, Diamond itself, crud in a bag), Purina ProPlan, Wellness etc. Comparable pricing with frequent buyer savings on select feeds. Samples for customers readily available on shelves, so you don't have to pay $20-40 just to "try" a premium, quality, nutrient-rich food. Recently Natura prices up at this store, actually better at Phydeaux, Chapel Hill, but I go to Barnes for good folks, local community feel, and great service! Eclectic variety of pet hardware (Lupine! lifetime warranty, free exchanges!), treats, bones (roasted, pig ears, bully sticks), toys and supplements; bird houses/feeders and feed. Beds/crates. GOOD supply Weaver leather dog restraints. In Spring, Broad St sidewalk storefront is full of their plants for sale, primarily commercialized (Bonnie brand), but still pretty to looksee. EXCELLENT folks workin there, very attentive, consistent, helpful, know their stock and inventory well. If they don't know they'll find out, they'll order it, check with a "senior level" employee, they'll "serve" you, unlike the chainstores! Special orders also. Also carry Purina livestock feeds, in the heart of Durham, imagine! I'd love some horse dewormers and supplements, but they are just Filled to Capacity already with pet foods. Please, keep their doors open and their staff employed, as I and my crazed critters would miss Barnes terribly! GO get some yummy food!
