They had a long wait for a scheduled delivery, but I got put on a waitlist and was got my delivery by the end of the week because I live nearby. Super responsive when I asked about timing later in the week and the delivery driver was very quick, friendly and understanding about where we needed the dirt placed. Update: we ordered a much more reasonable amount of mulch this year. In fact, it was half of last year's order and it was just the right amount. We didn't have any leftovers for our neighbors this year, though. Sorry neighbors! Also, we recently stopped by to pick up some loose stones for a stepping stone path to our patio. It was fun to pick them out, put them on the cart, and weigh them to see what you'll pay. It kind of felt like a game show. I recommend that you bring some gloves for picking up the stones to get a good grip and avoid ripping your hands up if you have soft, delicate city hands like me. It was very easy and we paid 24 cents per pound. We were able to get 20 stones for $70. That actually came in a little under our planned budget, so we were pleased. We probably should have picked a few more that were a little bigger because some of the steps are a little small, but we are still happy with our path. Worst case is we will stop by again to pick up a replacement or two. read more

Ordered 10 yards of mulch. Delivery set for Saturday at 2PM. They never show up. No call, no email, no notification of any kind. They're closed at 3PM on Saturday until the following Monday. So I sat around for four hours waiting. Don't mind them running out of mulch (the explanation I got on Monday morning). I DO mind wasting my Saturday because of poor customer service. read more

Visited to get an estimate on gravel to spread over decades-old, embedded gravel already in our driveway. The gal pointed us to the sample rock bin so we could figure out what kind we wanted to order, and also told us there's a quantity calculator on the website (nifty) so we could plug our measurements in there, and help figure the quantity we'd need that results in the recommended 3-inch depth. We placed the order, and it was scheduled to arrive the following afternoon ($40 deliver-and-drop fee, which seemed reasonable; but you can pay them to spread it for you too, if you prefer). We weren't home, but left a note on the door asking them to drop it at the foot of the driveway. When I got home later that day, the mound was there, as expected! They also carry pavers, and even chick coops. Definitely drop in if you live in Durham and don't want to go to a big-box retailer. read more

I recently purchased 2 yards of River Rock. They have 2 sizes of the Carolina River Rock and were very patient with my questions and gave me advice regarding setting the stepping stones I plan to go back and buy after the gravel is spread. I ordered on Friday and delivery was on Monday! The delivery driver, Eugene was super! He listened as to where I wanted to spread the stone and was able to carefully unload the rock without dumping it onto existing plants. Very pleasant experience overall! read more

Love love love the Rock Shop. The folks who run it are very nice, and especially accommodating to families - they even have a little play area they have set up for their own kids and happily watched my boys play for about an hour in the sandbox and spare rocks. The rock selection is pretty good - there are definitely other rock and landscape supply folks in the Triangle that offer a larger selection, but not so close to downtown Durham (that I've found, at least!). We originally stopped in to ask for recommendations for a stone mason to help us rebuild a failing retaining wall...and their recommendations were spot-on. We ended up going with Graham Fry of Winding Path, btw, and LOVE his work...amazing. We've also gone by a few times to buy bulk rocks for the kids to play with in the yard ($100 worth!) and it was great fun for the boys to pick out and weigh the rocks they wanted to take home. Going to The Rock Shop is always a fun outing for our family. We'll be going there again soon, as we're just finishing the wall, and need a huge mulch delivery for the newly scraped/cleaned upper patio! Thanks, Rock Shop ladies. You...rock! read more

The flowersbloom and bloom and the vegetables produce and produce. Rock Shop staff give the best advice about what's needed for gardening, what kind of gravel or mulch to use. Love this local, friendly business. We have had a load of mulch delivered, no problems. Also go regularly to get compost for our yearly vegetable garden -- we fill our own buckets as our garden is pretty small. Waaaaay cheaper than going to a place like Home Depot, and zero plastic waste to boot. read more
