One of the last of the old-fashioned hardware stores, and I'm a fan. They have a wonderful, huge selection of hardware items, and their store personnel are knowledgeable. They are also honorable people. I had to return an item that It turned out I didn't need, and it was the smoothest return process I've ever experienced. What great people! Barney's to the rescue! I recently broke this random, likely-impossible-to-replace plastic towel rack bar. With two ceramic pieces nailed into my bathroom door, replacing the entire rack was less than ideal. I considered foregoing a towel rack, but decided to at least look for a replacement piece before giving up. And so i set out, with plastic bar in tow, to home depot (fail), container store (fail), and bed bath beyond (almond milk success, but plastic piece fail). I had come to accept that I would potentially have to forever live with two ceramic ends sans plastic rack jutting out of my door...until my pal (aka resourceful man) suggested visiting the local hardware store. "Wow, great idea!" I told him while really thinking "just let it go- it's game over for the towel rack bar mission". And so I entered Barney's, whipped out this miscellaneous plastic towel rack bar, and asked, "I know this is a long shot, but any chance you carry these?" The employee gave me the "you fool" look (yes, i know this look quite well) and said "of course...duh". He lead me to the wall in the back and asked which color I wanted. A mere 10 minutes later, my new plastic towel rack bar had been inserted and my towel had resumed its place on the door. Thanks Barney's! You came through when all others failed.... you rock! read more

A wonderful West Village gem, at first l was leery of this place because l thought it would be far more expensive than Ace but it's not. Really wonderful service going the extra mile that chain stores like Ace and Home Depot do not. l was looking for a chuck key for an unusual hammer drill, my first key didn't work, l was told to bring in the drill and we tried several chuck keys none worked, they then ordered a new chuck which worked perfectly. This whole process was a real pain and l doubt a chain hardware store would have the time or patience to do this and also sell the chuck key at a very reasonable price competitive will the chain hardware store. Although it looks small the amount of things that have is bewildering. l needed wax floor paste a fairly common item Home Depot didn't have it and the clerk there said that no other store would have it either, implying that it was a thing of the past, he was wrong Barney's had it! l regret the years l wasted going to Ace, this is now my new go to and given that it's a 5 minute walk away from my apartment l'll be coming here frequently. Strolled in for coupling adapter help to attach garden hose thread to shower head and in less than one minute was walking out the door with a match and teflon tape in hand. And it was a perfect fit! The guy at the counter couldn't have been more helpful and friendly. Love my local small business shops! read more

This place rocks. They'll make every effort to help you and even suggest other places if they don't have what you need. There are plenty of old buildings in this neighborhood and they understand how to update and resolve an issue. Definitely an asset to the neighborhood. read more

My go-to hardware in the area. These guys have most everything I've ever needed; I think I stumped them only once. Pricing is pretty good on most things, 2x4s being an exception. Went there to pick of four of them once, was told the price, and thought, "Wow, that's great for four of these." Turns out it was the price per. Otherwise, really fair. Better and cheaper than most small hardware stores in Manhattan. Tall slender dude at the counter is super, super fast. Sort of a joy to watch, if you appreciate people who are really good at their jobs. He knows the store, and hardware/construction in general, really well. He and the older guy are fun to verbally joust with. I never can tell, though, if they enjoy the repartee or just wish I would move the hell on. read more

Went to five--yes, really, five--different key copying places trying to get an elevator key copied. Lowe's, Bed Bath & Beyond, key robot, random cobbler key places, another hardware store. None of those places could copy this apparently outdated and obscure type of elevator key. The knowledgeable Barney's guy knew immediately what the key was for, was able to copy it, and very conscientiously warned me that this kind of key tends not to copy well so I should just come back if it didn't work. The store, which is very easy to overlook, seems to have at least one of everything. read more

I already loved Barney's but I had to write a review because- I had a cabinet pull that had a broken screw stuck in it - and there was only a tiny nub of screw left in it- hard or impossible to remove. I tried to find a replacement. I tried every local hardware store in the neighborhood to find a replacement. No luck. They tried to pry the screw out for me out for me without success at all local stores and Lowes and Home Depot but it was ONLY at Barney's Hardware where this beautiful man succeeded. He saved my cabinets from looking stupid. I have always loved Barney's. Now I love them even more. I can always find what I want. They give good advice. They'll come over and install your air conditioner - and these are men who know how to do things men in other hardware stores can't. read more

Willy and his crew are extremely helpful and informative. Not nice per se, but highly efficient for sure. They actually often under price the Home Despot (haha) on a lot of items. They have an amazing range of specialized light bulbs and they can cut key copies in about 10 seconds which is top notch for Manhattan. I've been coming here for 6 years now and I'll continue to do so. read more

This place is one block away from my apartment, so of course I never go there. :-) But the other day I was desperate for a particular bulb I'd seen online and none of the just-bulbs-type stores in NYC had it, so I called. The owner answered, called the manufacturer, and the next day the bulbs were in the house. And at a cheaper price than you can find them for on the internet. It's minor but important. Needed a fuse for air/con. Went to Home Depot, showed old fuse, guy selected one he said was same. Got home. Didn't work. Turned out my old fuse was SL20amp, he gave me S20amp. Price for 2 was 6.71 +tax. trip there 12 blocks, same to return, wait on line to return item, etc. A big store, right, but they didn't have the SL20amp. So I went to close neighborhood place, Barneys. Guy selected right fuse. Not only that, I had called to ask if he had it in stock, so when I arrived, he had the box waiting on the counter. 4 for $5 plus tax. $1.25 compared to $3.35 apiece. And it worked. read more
