After reading a few excellent reviews, I thought I'd head out from the UWS to Mensch Lumber on the Eastside to purchase supplies to DIY deck the floor of my small balcony. Wow!! was I taken aback. I was spoken to dismissively and abruptly by a rude staff member named Billy. Don't know if you really care but I needed to cleanse myself of this dudes negativity. I needed a couple of pieces of wood for some tasks in my apartment. Oddball sizes, needed custom cutting. George was terrific, super friendly and helpful, very accommodating and he cut two perfectly-sized pieces of wood for me, took two minutes, and couldn't have been easier or more pleasant. Very nice people in the store, will definitely return when I need any wood or hardware. A great resource in my new 'hood! read more

Forget Home Depot. Simplify your life. I've been involved with home improvement for over 50 years. There is just no one to equal Oscar at Mensch (Harlem location). The man who does the cutting is also very special. I never met up with a more accommodating work force. read more

Mensch charged me an extra hundred dollars (someone fat-fingered the credit card machine when checking me out, and I suppose it was partly my fault for not double-checking the receipt), and then when I realized their error and asked for a credit (over the phone), instead of crediting me they charged me another hundred!! I had to get credit back from my credit card company (Chase - love them) through the fraud department because Mensch never answered their phones when I called after that. Additionally, on the day that they charged me the wrong amount, they lost my address and phone number for the delivery (the guy said he took it down but then lost it), so I never got a delivery and had to call the next day to figure out where all my supplies were. AND, they have a very limited supply of goods. They carry 2 colors of (crappy) grout and they are always out of primer and ceiling paint. Would have loved to resolve the credit issue over the phone or perhaps by getting some kind of discount (I have spent over $2k there in the last few months and did I get any kind of discount? NO) but unfortunately I have not been able to get in touch with them. read more

Almost everything you need for serious home improvement. Need a a 10'x4' sheet of nice veneer plywood? They can do that. And even better, they can cut everything to your specified dimensions for a nominal fee in their shop in the back. Not only does that mean you can carry the pieces home, but you don't have to make lots of sawdust in your apartment. And believe me, ripping sheets of plywood at home is a messy process... Highly recommend. read more

They sell all sorts of wood beams, brackets, bricks and other building supplies, and the way Jason was flirting with me leads me to believe that his "wood" is up for grabs too.......not that there's anything wrong with that! read more

Serious Lumber Yard and Building supply house. Usually the place is filled with contractors picking up their supplies for the day ahead. Guys behind the counter are great, Great Product Knowledge as well as Fast Service. The guys in the yard are just as great, they will have your truck loaded in a matter of minutes, and you'll be on your way, If for some reason the item you want is not in stock they usually can get it in a matter of days, or within a day or so from their other yard over in Queens. I was referred to Mensch Mill and has shopped there about 4 times in the last 3 weeks. I'm in the process of remodeling my entire apartment and went in with a vision and Nate made sure he brought it to full fruition. These guys spent time with me making sure they knew exactly what I wanted. Customer service and knowledge of products was exceptional. So happy with my purchases. read more

Kept stringing me along saying they'd have to check to see if they had what I wanted. They didn't but said they'd check at their place in the Bronx where they thought they had it but didn't. Also didn't return phone calls. My experience with them was lousy and a waste of time. read more

These guys were great. I came in with a fairly eccentric list of cuts I needed for a DIY headboard. Jason talked me through the best and cheapest ways to proceed, George and Carlos cut everything perfectly, using whatever wood they could from the scrap pile so they wouldn't have to charge me for it, and I got everything I needed under budget. Cheaper than Home Depot, friendly, entertaining, and efficient. It'll be my first stop for the rest of my projects read more

I like to fix little things in my apartment, and this place has everything: tools, wood, paint. The really cater to builders, but all the guys are very helpful, give you advice on your project, and cut stuff to your measurements. they only drawback is that they usually close at 5, so it's kind of hard to get there after work... read more

This is the third time Mensch lumber has far exceeded my high expectations so this 5 star rating is way past due. They deserve a 100 star rating in my opinion. Buying wood is very confusing for many different reasons, especially because of the way it's referred to as being one size but it actually measures something else. All 3 times they have patiently, kindly, intelligently & not at all condescendingly ( which is how I often feel at other lumber yards) walked me through the process of the best way to execute my very small project. All three of the times, they did beautiful, precise custom cuts for me quickly. Today, Royce did the cuts & Jason Kearns helped me on the floor. Everyone in the store & around the outside loading area was very helpful & seemed happy to be there. I love a store with a GREAT product & a FANTASTIC vibe!!! MThank you all very much! read more

This place is top notch. Anything you can think of is in stock and the have really good prices. The customer service team is really friendly & the manager Jay is very knowledgable . I traveled all the way from Hell's Kitchen to this wonderful establishment because the assistance I got just on the phone was above and beyond. After calling several other stores, being put on hold, hung up on and spoken rudely to, I had to make the trip to meet the staff at Mensch. I was going to spend my money at a place that understood the meaning of good customer service. Oscar fielded the first call I made and he answered all my questions thoroughly and good naturedly. I then called back and needed help in another department. I then spoke to Felix. He also was really knowledgeable, kind and patient. When I got to the location I got to meet the other members of the staff and they were all equally qualified and very pleasant including Nate in paint, Erik the Carpenter and Jason the store manager. Oscar, upon discovering we were both going to be taking the same subway, offered to carry my custom cut wood shelves for me - and they were heavy! He and Nate I left at the same time because I literally closed the store down - and yet neither one of them made me feel rushed or that they were put out having to help me until the last minute. They even put an order through for me while I waited because they didn't want me to have to make an extra trip from so far away. That kind of service goes well beyond what any other home improvement center would do. Many other sales associates I've spoken to at other stores don't even know their business let alone be kind enough to go the extra mile to help someone out. I will happily travel the distance again to give more of my business to this great establishment and I highly recommend them to anyone looking for a "one stop shop!" read more

These guys are really helpful, in fact they saved me money over a bathroom repair that another place had sold me two items on, and told me a third was needed, when these guys got me going and allowed me to fix it with one section of pipe. I would like it if they were open later, but for the savings in cost and effort, I will use them for all my projects in the future. Oh, and the prices are reasonable, not jacked up. read more

I was at this location last week with a home project. I was lucky to find them! I had been to the college point location before and was met with the same respect and courtesy. Great selection. Helped me with all my needs. Made shopping easy and gave great pointers for my project. Perfect location with parking on 106th street made my loading easy and convenient! This is not so much a review of Mensch as a lumber supplier but rather of my experience with them. I needed a modest piece of wood for a home repair (about 4' x 6"). I requested the item at the front counter and was sent to the lumber area for "George". George found an appropriate piece of wood and cut it to size. I took it to the front counter and said I would like to pay for this wood - then rattled off the dimensions and cuts so the cost might be calculated. The gentleman at the counter said: "Do me a favor." I replied "What is that?". He said "Have a happy Easter". I said "Thank you so much" and departed. That kind of gesture makes a relationship, and makes the name of the shop so much more meaningful. I will be back. read more

These guys are absolutely amazing. I have been working design build project in East Harlem for an Architecture masters program and anytime we need lumber or construction material they are always there for us. The staff is extremely friendly and helpful, they always know what we need and if they don't have it they know where we can get it. It has truly been a pleasure doing business with them for the past 3 months. They have saved us day after day from the headaches of trying to locate materials for our project. read more
