Finally made it to the 100 Club! And they rewarded me with special sticky socks! Woohoo!…read more I love PB Harvard Square. This studio, in particular, is open and bright. I have taken classes with Amanda, Michelle, Hilary, Angela, Liliana, Steph, Julien, Nada, Olivia, and Khrystyna. They are all very good instructors! Some instructors give more hands-on corrections than others, which is totally fine because some days I just won't want to work as hard. The classes are costly. If you are a Harvard affiliate, the MAC/HEM also offers barre (under group fitness) classes for a much more affordable membership price. The link can be found here, https://recreation.gocrimson.com/fitness/schedules The Harvard Barre classes are less intense and slower-paced when compared with Pure Barre. I went there for a year but ultimately started looking for specialty barre studios. I went to a class at Harvard Barre & Soul, the pace was good, but the studio was too stuffy/small to me. I also took an Intro class at The Bar Method. I didn't like how the music was more in the background, and the instructor calls out your name over the mic to give corrections. I also went to a Barre3 class but felt more like a yoga + cardio class than a barre exercise. I have to say after 100 classes, there are some movements and forms that I am still trying to get used to. There are a couple of positions that I absolutely do not like (e.g., flat back chair pose) and try to cheat my way through. If you want to get a good idea of what to expect at Pure Barre, check out its Foundation class on YouTube. If you are new, just know that you will be sore everywhere on your body for 2 -3 days after your first barre class, the key is to go back and get used to the routine and exercise. Even though I have taken the Harvard Barre classes, it still took me about 3 or 4 sessions to fully get familiar with what to expect at the class here. I normally wear sticky stocks because it is highly recommended. I have also seen other people wearing normal socks and they seem to be okay. There is no shower here (though I don't typically sweat too much after Barre classic, Barre Empower is a different story!), and only one changing room with one unisex bathroom. I also like the Harvard Square studio better because it is comparably less crowded than its Boston location. There are classes here with 20+ people say for a weekend morning, but other lunchtime classes are usually around 5-10 people. I'd highly recommend this location if this is convenient to you!

The workout was challenging for a beginner, but not impossible. I was able to do about 70% of the exercises (I had spine surgery and don't have full mobility). Plus, all the equipment is provided to you! The biggest con was the overall energy of the class. The music was very poppy and loud, which I didn't love. The instructor also wore a microphone headset, which was VERY hard to hear at times over the music. For a beginner, it was difficult to follow along at times. The class I took was more "peppy" (think: "and lift! and lift!" cues), which isn't exactly my jam. I would have probably tried another class here, but the receptionist told me that this location is unfortunately closing soon.

It's a little hard to find, but look for signs to the right of the entrance to Trident bookstore and go up the steps to the second floor. Once you're there the space feels nice and welcoming. There are lockers and changing booths (with a curtain cover), and bathrooms are located in a common area in the hallway just outside the studio. Not sure if there's a place to fill a water bottle, but I think they have some for sale.

SCAM - DO NOT GO HERE !!!!…read more I've always been involved in fitness classes so I thought that coming here would be similar to every other experience I've had. WRONG. While I've done other classes, I've never tried barre before so I wanted to give it a shot with their free intro class to see if I would like it. The class was alright, but the manager of the studio along with 3 other employees all cornered me at the end of the class asking when I would start and continuously asking what my schedule is like. It was very uncomfortable and honestly they make it hard to even think about the classes clearly when they outnumber you like that. They told me that the second I leave the studio, there will be a $60 fee if I try to sign up for classes online and that giving a "free class" where you don't have to pay this ridiculous fee if you sign up right there is actually their "gift" to you. At the time, I agree to try a 4 class pack because I figured that the class was fine enough and worst case scenario, if I don't like it at the end of the 4 classes I don't have to continue. They rush in putting this payment through and ask for a code that is sent to your phone number. They also tell me that there is a 30 day cancellation policy, which is annoying in itself but that is the least of my concerns. What they DON'T tell you is that this code is meant for a contract that they sign for you and then don't tell you any terms of this "agreement." In this contract, they signed my name for me for a 3 month initial term that I did not ask for. After finding out their deceitful methods, I email them immediately to ask for a cancellation of this "membership" that I did not sign up for and ask for a refund as I will not be taking any of the classes anymore. They continuously fight me on it saying that I verbally agreed to it at a specific date and time and refuse to give me my money back with no real reasoning. I tried to just talk to them and simply cancel the classes because I don't support businesses that try to trick their clients, but of course they don't actually care.

I just went to one of the Saturday 11am classes and although I didn't get all the moves down pat, I had a ton of fun and had a great workout! Jess is fun, encouraging and despite the mirrored room, she doesn't call you out for messing up the moves. In fact, I felt better when she herself confused a step. She was really friendly too. I signed up for the class via Meetup and she recognized me when I walked in. I cannot compare this to any other Zumba classes because this was my first one, but the fact that there were so many regulars was a good sign. Also, I was nervous that other people would watch me and laugh every time I messed up a move, but you don't really have time to watch anybody but yourself and Jess. I can't wait to go back to another class! If you're a beginner, Jess recommends either the Tuesday night or Saturday morning classes btw. And don't fret if you are a man. There was a man in my class and he seemed to be having fun too! The only issue I had was finding the place and parking. But go through the door to the side of the building. It says Enterprise, but it's the main door for all of the businesses at 26 New Street. As for parking, the lot is tiny, but I saw some people park on the street even though there were signs that said "Tow Zone." I chose to park at the Danahy Park lot just in case and to get some extra walking in! :)

I told myself I would get the most out the of the three month deal and then cancel. I was so wrong. 6 months later I am still going 5-6 times a week, have signed the 100 classes barre, and have doubled down for the next 6 months as well. There's so much to love about the studio itself. The staff is friendly and welcoming. The teachers are incredible with their enthusiasm, instruction, and helpful corrections. The classes are challenging yet motivating. And, the community is fantastic. PBAY offers a full schedule of classes to choose from. The most frequent right now are the Classic classes which follow a familiar class structure, but the exercises are always being switched up. Prepare yourself for a 90-second plank session early on in class - the first time you hold it full out you will feel like a goddess. The Empower classes introduce more cardio, and they are slowly being added to the schedule. Reform classes will be coming in January 2022, and I can't wait to try them. I advise you download the app and get yourself registered for classes early. Don't be intimidated by the wait list if a class is full, I get in off the wait list more than half the time I'm on one. (Word of the wise - if you're scheduled for a morning class, plan to wake up in time to go to class just in case you get off the wait list overnight). There is a charge for missing a class or canceling within the 4-hour window before class. I was unsure of this rule at first, but I've found it's actually motivating in holding me accountable for going to the classes I've signed up for instead of dropping them at the last minute. If you're interested in giving PBAY a try, check the schedule to take a free Foundations class or call the studio to see when they're being offered. It's the best way to get a feel for the studio and the class structure.

Their signature barre class is pretty standard for barre and uses a tube, ball, and weights. It's a good class, but I felt it wasn't as hard as some other barre studios I've tried (but definitely better than finding barre classes online to follow along). I also noticed that the instructor that day curated a playlist made of songs she likes but kept changing the song and the moves weren't particularly timed to the music or anything, so that was a bit strange. I liked that the classes were on the smaller size, so there was plenty of space in between people. It seems like there are limited class offerings (1-2 classes/day). When you walk in it's a very strange setup, with a small lobby with just a couple of benches to sit on and the front desk all the way in the back corner. There's a shelf for socks, water bottles, and hair ties. When I checked in the front desk worker told me the lockers and bathroom are inside behind the studio and I was surprised I didn't have to fill out any waivers. She told me to grab weights, band, and a ball inside for class. There are hooks to hand your coat to the left as you walk in and shoes anywhere under the benches. You have to take your shoes off before entering the studio and you need socks for class. As the previous class exited, I walked in with weights and a band and grabbed a spot inside the studio and went to put my stuff in one of the lockers. The studio space is very square shaped and my class was pretty full with about 22 people. The format of the class included a warm-up with the weights and planks followed by thigh sprints, seat work, ab work, and a bit of stretching at the end. There was a good playlist for music and the instructor Kayla was good about cueing each different move. A good workout, but you won't get too sweaty. Your first class is $10 or you could also try 3 classes for $45. There are also different monthly membership options including founders membership for $150/month. On weekdays, there are a couple morning classes from 6-7AM, one mid-day class, and a few evening classes starting at 4:20 till 7:20PM. While on weekends, there are 2 classes offered in the morning at 9 and 10AM.

I had no idea what to except when I started this training, but let me tell you it has exceeded my expectations. Be In Union is just that. It is a powerful community space to Be In Union with yourself & others in the community who we share more in common with than we realize. I always just "did yoga". After these 3 months I now understand what it means to have a practice. I highly recommend taking the ride to this sacred, energetic space to take classes. Know that you can show up as your are, even if you simply made it on the mat & lay there for yourself. The Yoga Teacher training was truly life changing for me. My intention was never to be a teacher, I simply wanted to get back in touch with & heal my body. I am grateful that I am now part of this community I never knew I really had, yet have been part of for 15 years.
