Over the last 15 years I have been coming to the studio on & off. Life has been kicking my ass as it has most of us since 2020 & this past summer I reached my healing warrior limit & realized that I had done much work on healing my emotional & mental wounds, but not physical ones. I had no idea what to except when I started this training, but let me tell you it has exceeded my expectations. Be In Union is just that. It is a powerful community space to Be In Union with yourself & others in the community who we share more in common with than we realize. I always just "did yoga". After these 3 months I now understand what it means to have a practice. I highly recommend taking the ride to this sacred, energetic space to take classes. Know that you can show up as your are, even if you simply made it on the mat & lay there for yourself. The Yoga Teacher training was truly life changing for me. My intention was never to be a teacher, I simply wanted to get back in touch with & heal my body. I am grateful that I am now part of this community I never knew I really had, yet have been part of for 15 years. Goes to show how if we push ourselves past our comfort zones things "we never imagined" are possible. This teacher training was one of the best investments that I have made in myself.

THE GOOD: The…read moreteachers are mostly excellent (detailed, patient, and mindful of student's varying levels). The front desk staff is mostly helpful, cheerful, and welcoming. The studio is conveniently located near the Porter Square T stop and has plenty of nearby parking, making transportation easy. And, importantly, it's a judgement-free zone. If you need to modify your practice or take unscheduled breaks in class, no one will bat an eye. In fact, teachers encourage it. All great things. THE NOT SO GOOD: My first time at the studio, no one helped orient me to the space. I found myself asking dozens of questions, gradually annoying the front desk staff. I wish someone recognized I was new to Down Under and provided a brief tour. Down Under also seems to disregard the comfort of its students. Recently, the water fountain and upstairs bathroom in the studio were out of service. Only the basement bathroom had running water. For a hot yoga studio, providing access to water seems essential. But, during the water shutdown, the only option was to go to the basement and fill up your water bottle from the bathroom tap (which only dribbled lukewarm water). Worst of all, the water issue lasted for several days. The whole experience wasn't just inconvenient, it also felt callous of Down Under to not provide a basic thing like hydration. They could have offered bottled water (even for a fee) or put up a temporary water station with one of those large Gatorade jugs. But, no: the only option was lukewarm tap water from the dank basement bathroom. Every day I went to class, there were at least 2-3 students waiting impatiently (often dripping in sweat since the studio is regularly heated to 105 degrees) before and after practice. The Porter Square location is also just janky. I've heard staff describe it as "old school" or "vintage." These are euphemisms for what it really is: an aging space lacking amenities. I've been to the more modern and amenity-filled Down Under studios in Harvard Square and Central Square. Changing rooms, tiled private showers, pilates rooms, etc. exist at these other locations. In Porter Square? You'll have to change clothes in a curtained off area that barely provides privacy. I've had someone walk in on me while changing twice. More annoying is the fact that the changing rooms in the studio are often pitch dark. Since they are in the corner, little daylight reaches them and staff do not turn on the corner lights before or after class. So, you're stuck changing in the dark. With all the investments made in other studios, you'd think Down Under could upgrade basic things in Porter Square like changing spaces with latched doors. Nope. Yet another example of the studio's disregard of students' comfort. Still, I retain my monthly membership. Why? Well, I was initially drawn in when I read Down Under's website which proudly proclaims it is "America's Best Yoga, Pilates, and Fitness." I disagree. It's not America's best. It's just the least worst option in Cambridge.

I understand there are also "Mommy & Me" type groups here during the day, so I imagine that creates some schedule limitations. It also might contribute to... The studio occasionally smells like feet when I arrive. It seems to go away once the air has circulated. (I practiced at a Bikram studio once that put a lot into their air exchangers, the types of floor they used, how everything was cleaned, and how often it all was cleaned. After that lesson, I've wondered how many studios put that much effort into their cleanliness.) There isn't much range of class offerings. Lots of vinyasa and barre classes. Many of the vinyasa flow classes I've gone to, the teacher just does her own thing then says something about "Sun A," like saying it suddenly makes it so. We've often done a lot of deeper stretching poses at the beginning of a class where risk of injury is heightened. I'm curious how many take the Ashtanga or Iyengar fundamentals and just do their own thang. Similarly, I've found a lot of studios dive right into classes without any sort of intro or centering. (I refer to the studio as opposed to individual teachers when I've found this practice to be more or less common to the studio as a hole.) You (teacher) may be chummy with a couple of the students, but I've never met you before and would actually like to. Also, "ok let's get started" is just so... le sigh. I know I'm not in India, folks, but I do want some spiritual uplifting in my practice. I come for more than strong arms. Pros: You can't beat $30 for 30 days. It's only a few blocks from my temporary pad. The walk to/from the studio and the area itself are both lovely. The studio is nicely modern with clean lines and crisp colors. Some teachers have played more than the standard collection of "yoga" type music. I think modern alt rock and chill EDM are excellent contributions to a vinyasa practice. Overall, it's a nice studio. There are many not far from here, so I plan to try a new studio next month.

The class itself was challenging but a really great workout. Prepare to seriously sweat and HURT the next day. The instructor was great as well but a little bit intense for yoga. The reason I only gave two stars is because: 1.) they charge you $1 to rent a mat (which is fine), but when I wanted to rent two and only had a $1 and a $20 bill, and the girl didn't have change, she wouldn't give me the mat . So, I had to beg for change from other people instead of her just giving me the mat. I even had .50 cents at one point and she sill said I needed the full two dollars! Also, you sweat about as much as a shower, and you clean the mats with a Clorox wipe. They don't wash them and that's pretty gross. 2.) they packed wayyyy too many people in this tiny cramped room to the point where our yoga mats almost touched. Clearly they were trying to make as much money as possible, but when you can't extend your arms out during yoga there is a problem. Long story short - Great class but poor facilities.

The space is warm, beautifully done with a combination of greenery, that reclaimed wood post and beam architecture, and clean lines. There's not a lot of Hindu influence here - their music selections are mostly ambient, modern relaxation or upbeat tracks that don't compete with instruction. Don't get confused -- enter through the Main St. door, as if you were going to the bank, but keep going into the building, and up the first half flight of stairs, you're there! This is a wonderful business in Medford, I want to help hang permanent decal signs on the windows, as it's really hard to know that studio is even there. I attended a Free the Spine class due to my back pain and Brahmi is the best…read more She was very accommodating and understanding of my limitations (I'm currently expecting) and personally came by to modify my moves or check on me several times. Usually yoga classes feel pretty impersonal to me because the instructor stays in the front and rarely goes around to correct posture or positions, so you never know if you're actually doing everything correctly. Brahmi not only demonstrated the moves, she walked around and corrected a lot of people's stances, giving them tips on how to make a stretch more effective or comfortable. If you're a beginner to yoga, TriYoga is the place for you! I could actually feel my back pain improve throughout the lesson and I felt great afterwards. The studio is conveniently located with lots of street parking. I think there may be a lot, but I just parked on the street where there is four hour parking. It's a shoe-free environment the moment you walk in (which I love) and the atmosphere is very calm and relaxing. There's tea available if you want some. Inside, there is a mediation room (where there are free meditation classes on Sunday morning), two yoga studios, a big coat room, and four bathrooms (though one was out of commission due to a broken lock). I had a Nift deal for two free classes, so I arrived 15 minutes early to sign up for the class I want, but otherwise, it looks like you can just book the classes online. Prices are fair, being about $20/class; there's a beginner's deal where 5 classes are $25 total. This place is a gem and I definitely recommend!
