DISHONEST!!! I got a delivery of what was supposed to be 10 yards of pea gravel... upon seeing what actually arrived, 2 contractor friends laughed out loud. I took a photos and asked the owner of Barrera's how much gravel he estimated this pile was and he told me NO MORE THAN 4 yards. When I told him I had paid for 10yds, he decided that it WAS 10 yds after all (more tha double his first estimation)... sorry hate your luck, you already paid. read more

Don't go there. They are rude and condescending. I am a landscaper and have spent a lot of money buying material at their location, but it has gotten bad. They don't look at you and talk down to their customers. My crew and I have all experienced that and also watched them treat others that way who were asking questions. The owners son was in the phone while loading me up some rock and slammed the rock down. I am not a confrontational person, but confronted him and told him please be careful that's my trailer. His response was, " it's rock!". I drove off quietly. Ok Mr. Rock Star, I'm through with y'all. I have been doing landscaping for 20+ years and never once had someone slam rock down on my equipment. I told my crew, do not go back. If this company are competition, then I ought to be in busy a long time, because people won't want to be treated like that and they will not last., no matter how long they have been there. read more

I bought some St. Augustine grass from them. At least 3/4 of it was dead, hidden under the top row. Also I ask Barrera how much area each piece covered and was told that it was one and a half sq foot; turns out it was 3 SQ Ft. When I called to return the excess I was told that he would take back the grass even though it was still on the original pallet. The grass that did grow was on the end of the pieces. I've bought a lot from these people and referred many others. No longer will I trade with them or recommend them in a positive manner. read more

Stay far away from Barrera's Nursery! In the summer of 2015 we completely renovated our backyard, replacing a number of large bushes, the mulch, and all the sod. In an effort to patronize a locally owned business rather than a big box retailer, we purchased everything that we could from Barrera's. We spent well in excess of $2000.00 there. The last piece of our project was laying sod. We got through two pallets, which were just fine. At the top of the third pallet we encountered a nest of fire ants. We are not talking a few dozen ants, we are talking tens of thousands, along with handfuls of eggs. Coming anywhere close to the pallet was clearly a safety hazard. Confident that Barrera's would take care of the problem for us, we called the nursery and spoke with Ezekiel (Nick, the owner, was on site but did not care to speak with us). My husband explained the problem and politely asked how we needed to go about getting the pallet replaced. We were downright stunned when we were told that that sod is sold as-is and they would not be replacing the infested pallet. Ezekiel "helpfully" suggested that we lay the sod, water it, and treat it with pesticide, clearly not understanding that moving such heavily infested grass would land at least one of us in the emergency room. I then got on the phone and explained to Ezekiel that we had specifically elected to patronize a local small business rather than heading for Home Depot or Lowe's to purchase all our landscaping materials. We did this with the expectation that we will get personalized service and that the store owner/manager will help us out if there is a problem. Ezekiel's explanation was that Barrera's does not grow the sod and therefore takes no responsibility if the sod is unusable. At that point I was angry and explained that my displeasure with this absurd policy would be clearly reflected in as many online reviews as I could post. I asked Ezekiel if I could please speak to the owner about this matter and he stated that the owner would give me the same answer and that he invited me to post any reviews that I cared to. I have never come across a retailer so unwilling to back up their product. As pointed out by my son, this would be exactly like going to Best Buy and purchasing a computer and arriving home and finding it smashed to bits and unusable in the box, only to be told by the Best Buy manager that we would have to live with it and purchase a new one if we want a functioning computer. Barrett's installed my sprinkler system about 2 years ago. I live out in the country and the person on the phone said he didn't think they would come Out this far. I reminded him that installed the system and his response was "that was 2 years ago". He had to refer it to Nick, the owner. I have left him a message to call me 4 days in a row and he has not bothered to give me a call. I asked when they might expect him to be in and I got a snippy response stating that Nick was the owner and that he controlled his own schedule. Still no follow up from Nick. read more

I have shopped at Barrera's on and off for 18 years, mostly for rock. I have always found them to be helpful, and the guys who load the scoops of rock in your truck have always been expert at not doing any damage to your truck. I have bought sod in which later weeds grew, but that can happen from any nursery. The sod itself is high quality. I just pulled out the weeds. They have the best rock assortment and good prices on rock. read more

I went there today to buy a few rocks to paint, not a big ticket purchase by any means. In fact, 40x what I needed might accidentally break $100. Nevertheless, the gentleman in the rock yard explained the pricing ($.20-.30/lb) and the basic rock differences. He came back a few minutes later to check on me and carried my container into the store, to the counter, weighed it (rounded it down), and came back when I had paid to carry my rocks to my car. Pleasant conversation, and an understanding of the value of a customer were bonuses. So far I have posted great feedback here, on my fb page, on the rock painting group fb page, and a couple other places. I'll be back, so will my friends. read more

We live in Hewitt and this past summer (2022), I embarked on a few yard projects. I purchased 7 pallets of Bermuda Sod, 4 trees, and 6 yards of compost. I dealt with both the owner and the son on these different transactions. I found their service to be good. I can perhaps see why some of the bad reviews point to poorer service. I am personable, so perhaps that helped. I would recommend this place and we will continue to use them. I like all the advice they gave about the kind of grass and trees our yard required. I am not a landscaper. Regarding the Bermuda Sod, we did have weeds appear but I think that was more related to my soil and the amount of nutwedge weeds which were already present in the soil. Their sod comes from some place in Houston and arrives daily. They don't have much control over the quality but we found it to be fine. I like the local feel and the family seems to be honest and kind. They added a discount on my plants as they noticed I had returned numerous times. read more

My mom uses Barrera's nursery for her lawn care. Her yard was full of thatch and weeds when she started with them. Now it's very green and healthy. They don't use many chemicals. They did a lot of weeding by hand, aerating, added compost and analyzed the watering needs of different areas. Her yard looks so good, she has had neighbors ringing the doorbell to ask who takes care of her yard. The pricing is the same as the other landscaping companies she has used, but the results are much better. read more

This business caused me the loss of valuable time because of its poor customer service and lack of professionalism. I was in Waco for only a few days to visit my mom. Her yard was clearly in need of attention. In the past, she usually relied on a relative or someone in the neighborhood who would stop by when he had time after work. I wanted her to have a professional company with whom I could contract to provide the very best lawn care on a regular basis. Because this was my mother's yard, I wanted this service regardless of cost. I contacted this business by telephone and explained what I needed and also indicated that I would be leaving town in a few days. The employee told me that this was the type of work they did and that this could be taken care of before I left town. I was to expect a call for the person who was in charge of lawn care. At the end of this conversation, I provided my mother's East Waco address. By 5:00 p.m. that day, I had not heard from Barrera so I made a follow-up call. After being on hold for a few minutes, a different person asked me for the name of the person I was calling. I again indicated that this was a follow-up call and that I thought I was already being helped. After being on hold for another few minutes, a different person came on the line and said, "We are not taking new customers." I said thank you and ended the call. During my initial morning call, nothing was ever said about not taking new customers. Not taking new customers? How strange and utterly perplexing. In addition, once this business had made that determination, no one had called to tell me this. Now I am only left with speculation about why they did not wish to provide me with service. Had 4 cubic yards of compost delivered. The pile I received was 4/5ths the amount I had paid for (shorted almost an entire yard). I called and was essentially told that the loader they us has a scoop that's "exactly" 1 cubic yard per load and that's what they use to calculate the amount they deliver to their customers. She stated "we do not measure that exactly after it's poured". They refused to resolve the matter or discuss it further. Will never do business with them again. read more

I live 6.5 hours from Waco, Tx and I was coming to put in a yard from someone in Waco. I had contacted Barrera's the week prior to order 2 pallets of grass. I was told they would be there on Wednesday and I told them I would pick them up Friday. After renting a tillar, bringing my trailer, which dramatically increases gas usage, and hiring a laborer, I left for Waco. I called Barrera to let them know that I would be there late Friday afternoon to pick up the grass. I was informed that they did not have an order for me and they had no grass. I can understand that an order can get misplaced or that something happened where they could not get the grass in for that week. What I cannot accept is when they put a man on the phone, I believe it was Ezekiel, the person that I actually placed my order with and his explanation was that they did not have enough of an order to place so they did not get any grass in. I asked why I was not called to let me know the grass would not be there and he said that I should have called to find out and that there was nothing he could do. He did not apologize, he blamed me for not calling!! How am I supposed to know if they got the grass in?? Obviously, they should have called me to let me know the situation not the other way around. There was no effort, whatsoever, to correct the situation, to try to find me some grass or to help in any way. He told me that he got grass from the Houston area and that no one had grass around Waco. He just kept saying that there was nothing he could do, again without even apologizing. After searching, I found a grass grower only a short distance from Waco that actually said that they sold grass to Barrera's and even said that Barrera's could have come and picked up some grass from them to take care of me!! That was never offered....no willingness to help. I was going to arrive too late to pick up the grass from the grower so I am going back next week to pick it up from the grower and complete the yard project. I asked Ezekiel to speak with the owner and he asked why?? Are you kidding me?? He would not tell me the owners name, he would not let me talk to him and I wanted to leave my number and have the owner call me, again, he refused to let me have contact with the owner. I drove 6.5 hours, pulling a trailer, rented a tillar and had someone waiting to work, all for nothing, thanks to Ezekiel and Barrera's. Again, I understand that things happen and that mistakes are made but I will not ever understand how a business can blame a customer for not confirming an order that THEY are responsible for, then take no responsibility for anything and not even offer an apology. Lastly, they had no interest at all with trying to solve my problem and their mistake. Their attitude was "too bad, nothing we can do". I will never go to Barrera's for anything and I hope that you read this review and find someone else to do business with. If I were the owner of Barrera's, I would consider letting your employees know that this kind of poor service is not acceptable....oh, I forgot, I can't tell the owner this because according to his employees, he does not have time to talk to his customers! read more
