Attempted to hire Barretts for removal Large evergreen , landscaping after tree removal, and topping of large dogwood which was under threat of removal by the Utility Company unless tree was trimmed. Wanted to wait for fall to remove evergreen and landscape.I just wanted to save the dogwood which was urgent. Baretts not interested unless I did the job all at once. Not accommodating to a customers needs. Does not want small jobs, even if attached to a large job. . Promised to call back after I spoke to him but he did not. Horrible company. John Barrett Jr. threatens neighbors by telling them that his family has been in town for over 150 years. He does whatever he wants and doesn't ask the neighbors that border or share a tree. I did not hire and would NEVER recommend. The owner, John Barrett Jr. is a trouble maker, disrespectful, uncourteous, and rude. He removed a piece of my fence without asking for permission. Then the fence wouldn't go back into the hole properly. He did not apologize or clean the mess of shavings. In the end, John Jr. told me that he removed MY fence without permission because he knew I wouldn't allow it. I would NEVER recommend this company, unless you want problems with your neighbor(s). 100% satisfied. 11 years at this location and never touched 3 backyard trees. Also had a rubbery mulberry tree invade the fence between property of neighbor and I. Called 5 companies for estimates. Metuchen Tree Service called back but never came for an estimate. Rich Tree Service never called back. Diaz Tree Service was firm on their fair price (their prerogative). Princeton Tree Service was, in my opinion, way overpriced. Then Barrett...spoke to John.. came by personally in a couple of days for the estimate. Price point beat both other quites. We had a tree fall into our backyard on April 2nd. We called the prerequisite three potential vendors. The service chosen was this one, Barrett Tree Service. Not based on price, they were the highest, but because the gentleman said he could do it that day! Emergency service always costs more, so we thought o.k. The tree had split apart precariously and was still partially attached, but with a large portion touching the ground. We were expecting quite a bit of wind, so we signed the contract. His workers arrived a little before 5:00 p.m. The lead guy obviously didn't want to start the job that evening. Instead, he had an entire crew (I believe there were 4 additional men) stand around for an hour! Then around 6:03 the gentleman we signed the contract with, I'm assuming the owner, showed up and voila the work magically began. They removed the dragging weight - Good. However, the job was NOT completed as stated. Further, as soon as that one guy (owner left) so did his crew. Let me bullet point how a 5 Star rating goes to a 2: 5 Stars: Job completed same day as suggested before we signed the contract. Everything cleaned and property left intact. 4 Stars: Foreman shows up, stands around for an hour wasting time. Vinyl Fence that was removed not put back correctly, left dangling) remember windy conditions). Debris left everywhere in front of house from wood chipper. 3 Stars: No work done next day. Owner Supposedly stalls job as "punishment" for time wasted the day before. Punish them on your own time! I paid for emergency removal. We were in knots all weekend worried the tree would continue to fissure. Having to wait 3 extra days because your work crew doesn't give two snaps about Your business is not my cross to to bear! Then he proceeds to tell my husband, "My saw broke broke"? Are you kidding me?! You roll in w/3 trucks, a bobcat, and a wood chipper, but you only have ONE saw necessary for this job? FFS! 2 Stars: Over the weekend an unhappy neighbor shows up banging on our door because the illustrious, industrious work crew left a huge, heavy duty hand truck on their freakin LAWN! After Friday came and went & it wasn't removed they came a knocking. I'm sure it cost more than $10-$20 bucks so THANK US & my not so happy neighbor for returning your equipment!! The real kicker is they completed everything, including cleanup, within an hour on Monday. Do the math. The job could've been completed on Thursday in the two and a half hours they had before losing daylight. I'm giving two stars because they did their job. No kudos for doing what they were hired to do. They did return and finish the job. They did not wreck my fence. They did cleanup & put the fence back in place. Pretty sure because the owner was here. Of course he was, he wanted his check. I'm sure he will see no problem with his overall performance. Everyone approaches their job differently. Everyone uses a different litmus test for excellence. I've been a laborer and a boss. I have managed people in office work as well as labor positions throughout my work history. Working from either end, this performance did not meet my level of excellence. Perhaps their regular service meets the standard. However, I would not recommend them for emergency service. I hired John Barrett to remove a large tree from my front yard, as well as do some grooming on some of the other trees. After providing me a free estimate and walking me through the process of getting a permit, I decided to pull the trigger and hire him. His crew was on time, courteous, and fixed any and all messes they made in the tree removal, stump, grinding, and grooming. In addition, he was incredibly tolerant of some other workers who were at my house. Overall, the price was right, the service was impeccable, and John was an incredibly friendly guy who took the time to tell me how awesome being a dad is (my wife was expecting at the time of the job), and to chat about how cool it is to have a beard. Totally ripped off my elderly parents. Removed one small fallen pine tree from yard and what amounted to branches from a tree that was fallen behind their fence in yard. On a good day, these guys are great...on a bad day, be prepared for a nightmare. Just make sure you're comfortable playing the lottery if you hire them! We used Barett Tree Service twice. The first time they showed up (I think 2) days ahead of schedule without warning - someone made a mistake in communication, but we were happy to have the job done so figured it was no big deal. The tree was cut quickly and safely and the wood we requested them to leave was stacked nicely. Hell of a lot of sawdust in our pool (think 5 gallon bucket worth), but since it was only 3 feet away, not sure they could have done much about it - maybe some tarps? The second time we expected the same good experience. The plan was to take down two trees, remove a few large branches from two others for pruning purposes, and clean up dead wood from 2 or 3 others. They showed up on the expected day this time, but that was pretty much the end of the good part. Now, it should be mentioned up front that they did make us agree/get permission to use the neighbors property to get to the tree (sounded like basic foot traffic). That, to me, doesn't mean permission to destroy my neighbors lawn in the process without discussing it with him or me. Nightmare as follows: The entire team seemed to be fighting with each other and the boss on site had no control of them. First tree comes down without incident. Leftover logs are stacked in 6-8' sections which I agreed to (cut it myself later). Meanwhile, one of the other assigned climbers didn't want to climb, so some guy who was climbing for the first time (as far as I could tell) is up in one of the other trees trying to clear out dead wood. He's trying to get to the branches for a good hour while the other guys are yelling at him. Who knows how much unnecessary damage his spikes did to the tree in the process. A different guy ended up going up to finish. On to tree number two...since the climber still didn't want to climb or they were being lazy, they tried to back their bucket truck into the yard and got it stuck, tearing up my lawn and my neighbors lawn in the process. They literally had to use multiple pieces of machinery to pull it out and broke a few branches on another tree as well. Then once they started on the tree they dug out a bunch of my neighbors shrubs so that they could get their log grappler machine in to pull out branches that I could have pulled out by hand, so they certainly could have (especially with multiple guys on site). Of course all of this happened before I realized it, since I trusted them from the first job. This was just pure laziness. If you've ever run a skid steer/bobcat like tool over a lawn, you know how quickly you can tear up turf. I'm just glad they didnt have that machine the first time we hired them and that it didnt fit through our gate to the back yard! So now its getting dark and they're still not done. The neighbor comes home from work and is not at all entertained by the status of his lawn. I've already had a confrontation with the boss/owner(?) about it and now my neighbor has too. The excuse given? Well my climber didn't want to climb and I'm really getting hosed on this job so trying to save time. Explain to me how that's the customer's fault? Your business, your problem. They finally agreed to come back and "throw down some seed." (pretty sure that never happened). They wouldn't agree to pay my neighbors landscaping company to do the repair to the lawn properly. They did replant all the shrubs they dug out, if that counts as a positive. So back to the trees. They can't finish the bit of pruning in the other trees that we hired them to do since its dark (and the guy still won't climb anyway), so they had to come back the next morning. I sure as heck wasn't going to let them be at my house unattended, so I took some more time off work. They did actually finish the next morning without any more destruction. Wood from the second tree they took down (which I did ask them to leave) was left, but not stacked neatly like the first time we hired them. Think they were willing to work with me on the payment to make up for the nightmare of a job? Nope, not a cent. I'm currently looking to take down 3 more large oak trees and guess who isn't getting a call. read more

We hired Barrett to cut back a tree that was interfering with our power and cable wires and was shedding all over our roof. They did an AWESOME job! The crew knew exactly what they were doing. They were able to cut the back all of the needed limbs. But, they did such a great job shaping it, that you could not tell that it was so radically changed. They caused no damage with the wires or any other property. They did it quickly and cleaned up meticulously. The best part was that they were reasonably priced. He has removed a couple of trees for me and has done a lot of work for my brother and sister-in-law. Not just removing trees but also shaping and treating trees to save them. Barrett tree service came in October to remove two large trees in the backyard. They arrived several hours late, and because of this, was not able to remove the stumps the same day. The owner said they would come back in a few days to remove the stumps and at that point once the job was complete I would pay them. Well, 4 months went by without a word. We actually thought they forgot about us. I come home from work a day in February when I see these guys with machines doing something at my house. Turns out it's Barretts taking out the stumps! They never called to let me know they were going to do this. Just showed up in the middle of the day,l and removed the stumps. Now I'm left with huge piles of mulch, in the dead of winter and it's supposed to rain! This may cause a sink hole! And then they wanted an additional $300 to remove the mulch! Who does that! Who comes without notice to do major work in your backyard. Completely unacceptable. We were at a point where we were thinking about just leaving the stumps, but they didn't even give us that choice since they came without notice and just did it, FOUR MONTHS later. I was planning to have them do other jobs, but not anymore. I do not recommend this company. read more

Barrett tree came to remove a Pine tree ,When we told them to come in the afternoon , they came in the morning . Before I could get outside to look at the work , after our return . The team packed up and made out've here like thief's in the night . They were here when we came home . they broke off my split rail fence posts . Property is 1 1/2 acres . They stole a post from the fencing that went into the wooded area of the property and hoped that no one would notice .Property was left in a deplorable condition . After a call back , they did clean it up along with the road , driveway and the rest of the property . Asked the owner what kind work ethic does he have ? He talked to me like I was on the 50 yard line when we were standing next to each other . Sorry that you have no control over your crew . Made big davits in the lawn with the Bobcat . Bobcat left tracks to the fence area where they removed an existing post to cover up the damage they cause . Worst experience possible . read more

My experience with Barrett Tree Service began with a phone call I placed early last week. Within a few hours I had received a call back from John who was extremely courteous and accommodating. He arranged to come by later that same day to provide me with an estimate for the work and wound up arriving an hour earlier. I showed him the three trees that we wanted to have removed and not only did he know exactly the type of tree each was, he knew its characteristics (for example, we were afraid of the sycamore's proximity to the house and he was able to explain that the likelihood of that particular tree type being uprooted in a storm was minimal at best) and gave pros and cons for removing them from our property. John was knowledgeable, professional, and, above all, more than reasonable. The estimate was the first and only one we got because it was WELL under what neighbors assured us we would be paying for the job. As for the work itself, the quote comprised the tree removal, cleanup, stump removal, and refilling of the hole. John's father Randy (who I believe is the owner) showed up with his crew just before noon, began the job between 12:30 and 1:00, and were done not just with taking the trees down but the FINAL CLEAN UP well before 3:00. Hired Barrett to remove a dead tree and overgrowth trees. The did a good job on that. They manicured some evergreens they also weren't supposed to touch. Perhaps they thought they were doing me a favor but it's a look I hate. But even worse, they killed several shrubs they were never supposed to touch - they completely removed them and appear to have tilled the ground thus making certain that the shrubs are truly dead along with the bulbs planted under them. They destroyed hundreds of dollars in plants doing something they were never asked to do. They were just supposed to remove trees - if they just stopped with that, it would have been fine. I don't know why they felt they needed to do those other things - I just know they killed plants that were beautiful and I wish I'd never hired them. read more
