Mr.Barrington is the king of jerk in California! A strong statement yes, but I must say it's been the tastiest I've had since going to Jamaica myself. Was passing through Bakersfield and saw a high rated Jamaican joint so of course I had to stop by and try it. Ordered the oxtails, jerk chicken and chicken curry plate. Didn't want to hear it up later so I ate everything in the car. The oxtails were so tender and fell right off the bone as it should. Sooo dang good I tell you. The plantains and cabbage on the side were also bomb and went well with the oxtails and rice. The curry chicken was also pretty good, tender chicken, the curry flavor was strong and rich, the curry seeping into the rice was also a nice touch. Now the jerk chicken was just packed with flavor. Spicy, smokey, some Caribbean tang! All of it. Usually never have boneless jerk chicken but I must say it was soo good! I even got back in the drive through like after eating to get more to go to take home. Mr.Barrington is also a chill ass guy who looks like he loves what he's doing. I was in town to see the almond blossoms and came across this place on Yelp. I was surprised and excited to find a genuine Caribbean restaurant out here (granted I know very little about Bakersfield). First the food. We ordered the jerk chicken plate. You get jerk chicken, rice and peas, cabbage, and fried plantains for $10. The chicken was moist and you can really taste the seasoning. The best part for me was the tangy sauce he poured on top of the chicken. I wish I had asked for extra. It was sooo good! They have a few tables outside with umbrellas you can sit and dine at but mostly everyone did drive through while we were there. Barrington is the Chef and namesake of this hole in the wall gem. He was incredibly friendly. I couldn't decide on the brown stew chicken or the jerk chicken so he gave me a sample. We also had been on the road and out and about for nearly five hours and needed to use the restroom really badly. He was kind enough to let us use his private restroom which really saved the day for us. He said he's been cooking traditional food like this since he was a young boy. His passion really showed with every interaction he encoutered. Too bad it's a three hour drive from me. If I'm ever back in town I'll definitely come again to try curry or the oxtail. We were on our way back from Yosemite and saw that this place was named Yelp's #1 Jamaican spot in California and were so curious to see if it lived up to the hype. (Spoiler: it absolutely did!) We stopped by around noon on Tuesday and unfortunately they only had a few of their items. I think oxtail was only available on the weekends, but they had curry goat, curry chicken, and the famous jerk chicken! The plates of food were HUGE for the $10 we paid for them each. We ordered the curry chicken and jerk chicken and just wow! The veg, plantains, rice/beans were so good on their own, but the chicken itself?? So juicy and perfectly seasoned! I could have died happy. The server also got us some amazing hot sauce to add some extra heat and I absolutely recommend it! The jerk chicken and goat curry had excellent flavor without being overly seasoned. The meat was tender on both and easily came off the bone. I loved the sweet and savory flavors of the rice and beans. The plantains were yummy and even the cabbage (if you must have veggies, anyway!) We didn't know Stephanie and Evelette (sorry if I butchered your name or spelling!), but I watched them greet everyone with a genuine smile and energy. Ok, I haven't been to all the places in CA, but this amazing restaurant easily won my heart and go-to place for Jamaican food, even for a socal person who had my share of JF. This is a unique place, self standing in a strip mall parking lot. Having been to Jamaica, I am a big fan of the island's cooking. So I stopped by the drive thru and had a plate of half jerk chicken and half curry chicken. It comes with rice and beans, boiled carrots and boiled cabbage. It seems they cook the stuff daily, so everything is fresh. Overall, I would say that both flavors of the chicken were very mild and were not pronounced. It does not hit you. The chicken for both flavors was also very dry. The jerk chicken was also burnt. I got this for carry out and opened the package 5 hours later when it was time to eat. The only thing holding me back from the 5th star is no dining room! They do have a few small outdoor tables, but I much prefer eating inside. However having visited Jamaica before this building and dining area seems to remind you of being there. I ordered the Jerk Chicken platter and loved every bite. While on our last cruise Jamaica was one or our port of calls. We took a river raft tour in Falmouth, when you get off the raft at the end of the ride there is a small shack with some locals cooking up Jerk Chicken with Red Beans & Rice. This was the highlight of my time while being there! The flavor at Barrington's was spot on and reminded me of this place on the first bite. Very rarely in America do you find restaurants with foreign cuisine that don't have some American twist on the food. The only difference between here and the small family run shack there was the level of spice, it had a little spice here but no where near the heat I had over there. This is probably intentional so kids here can eat it with their families. I highly recommend this place and will definitely be back for some more of that wonderful food!
