I have no clue how this place has 4 stars. I was in the area and decided to give Crab in Bag a try, big mistake. The vibe inside is dark and weird, like a rundown dungeon. I get that they're going for an old boat theme, but this just felt like a dirty, falling-apart building. The highlight? A dead 2-inch roach by the men's bathroom door. Seriously. Service was whatever, nothing great. The food? Straight up awful. The sauce tasted like it was marinated in a plastic bag. Food gets a 0/5, service maybe a 1/5, and cleanliness? That's a solid -5/5. Went for lunch on a road trip after searching the area in our route for a fish restaurant. I saw that it had four stars and wasn't that far off our route and went for it. I ordered a pound of head on shrimp, medium cajun sauce, my sister ordered the cod-fish and chips. another sister had peeled shrimp and lemon butter sauce, and then the other two had shrimp fries and then there was a chowder bread bowl ordered as well. I tasted everything and I think the fried seafood lacked a little old bay and the boil bags were salted and peppered plenty however needed some depth of flavor to be Cajun ...a little bay leaf possibly. Overall the customer service was pleasant and we were happy to sit eat and recover before hitting the road. The bathroom was clean and stocked. Oh, I appreciate the tartar sauce it was creamy. I've been coming to crab in a bag for many years. You may even be able to find a great review from me about this place! The last few times I've come, the seafood boil has been very "mushy". the last I received a very black crab claw. Knowing the outside can sometimes be black and have spots I didn't mind. But upon opening it the claw was very black and green, slimy and rotten smelling. The manager at the time there argued with me saying it was good. Did not apologize for the rotten crab or offer to get me a new piece or anything. I felt like telling her to eat it, but instead I just left. This place used to be so good and the owner is so sweet and nice! He would always come out and make sure everything was good. I now eat at C Fresh. Very fresh good seafood! It was almost $4 for an egg.... Just one of them to add to the bag. My wife bit into it and realized it was a PICKLED EGG. She gave me a piece to try and dammit it was just a pickled egg lol. My kids decided to treat me to lunch today. It was our first time trying this place. They ordered a pound of king crab, a pound of snow crab, and a pound of shrimp in Cajun hot. It was outstanding. My kids read the menu and didn't want the special of a pound of mussels, clams or crawfish but the owner was there and said he was having a great day and gave them the special but with shrimp instead. After doing some research and seeing which one delivers, I decided to go with crab in a bag. I ordered their party special, which is around $182 but it comes with a lb of king crab, lb of snow crab and 2 lbs of either shrimp, clams or mussels along with 5 corn and 8 small potatoes, and a good helping of sausages. I went with the classic garlic butter sauce for all of them. I don't know how they calculate the corn and potatoes, I wasent sure of there was enough, but there was definitely more of the sides than I expected. For 5 adults, it was more than enough for dinner and we had enough for a day or 2 worth of left overs. Below is a more specific breakdown of the food and why I gave them only 3 stars. Quality of protein. 3 stars. The shrimp was extremely mushy. So mushy that it tore and turned into mush when I was peeling them. Also the heads of the shrimp were black, and even with all that garlic it was bitter. The shell of the crabs were soggy in that it didn't crack open with the crackers. Instead we had to use scissors to cut the meat out, which is different... Taste. 3 stars. The smell of garlic was amazing. When I opened the front door I could already smell the garlic and the butter. Unfortunately it was pretty bland. Granted when added to white rice you can taste the flavors. But ordering from such places, I'm not looking for healthy. I'm looking for so much salt and flavor in it that my ankles swell and my blood pressure goes up. Neither happened. Couldve used more salt, garlic salt, msg, something, anything. Natural flavors of the king crab and snow crab were subtle yet sweet. Amount. 4 stars. Yea it's north of 180 bucks. But the amount of food was generous. Everyone had both types of crabs and enough for left overs the following day. Overall this place is a solid 3 star. Middle of the road taste and quality. 1st time here during my visit to the city. I've had plenty of cajun shrimps in LA area & it was nice to find a good cajun spot here. Hit the spot. Shrimps nice & plump. Had some shrimps that were too mushy & soft though--probably molting. Snow crab was good too. Market value at this time was around mid $30 something & I cannot remember the shrimp per lb price. Sauces: Garlic butter was delicious & not too salty. I don't usually prefer salty foods & am more cautious of sodium intake overall, but garlic butter sauce could use a wee bit more salt to bring out the flavors of the shrimp more. I'm a garlic lover, but if you're hesitant because you don't really like the strong garlic smell, then this is good for you because while the flavors of chopped garlic were delicious, it won't leave much of a garlic odor like most places I've been to. Cajun sauce was better in that it was saltier so flavors popped more. Both were still great & I would order again on my next visit. PROS: -Restaurant name--straight to the point, memorable -Thick bib material--heavy duty quality -Spacious -Lots of parking -No wait -Clean restaurant & restroom -Family & date friendly -Employees were attentive & checked in on us -Self-service soda fountain -Order & pay at the counter immediately upon entering--hassle free imo -Sausages, corn & potatoes were all included in w/ our orders--yummy too -Self-service condiments bar along the wall of the restaurant CONS: -Bland exterior/interior ambiance/decor Not much of an ambiance really. More straight to the point kind of joint. More shipwreck/oceanside vibe would be nicer imo. Suggestion: -Include a sauce option with both garlic butter mixed w/ cajun together. -Sauces need more thickening for dipping, too thin & drippy to cling to the shrimps I would recommend trying this spot out if you're craving cajun style seafood.
