My visit to Barriques was brief, but it grabbed my attention enough that I hope to come back soon to do some more poking around! Though I have been going to my cabin for at least 16 years now (which has me passing through Middleton), it has only been rather recently that my family and I have started exploring the towns we pass through more. My fiancé and I had made a day trip up for some premarital counseling, and being craft beer lovers, decided to pick up a local brew on our way home. This is how we came to Barriques. Set at the corner of Elmwood and Cayuga (though this is apparently not the only location), Barriques is easily accessible from US 12/US 14. There is some parking right in front of the store, though I'm sure at certain hours you may have to park a little further. It is a well lit building with an interesting combination of coffee/food station, seating, and shopping. I didn't purchase any in-store consumables, but it seems to be a popular meeting place with enjoyable food and drinks. I think there's even a fireplace! Plenty of seating and they even have booze infused coffee drinks. Nice.... I enjoyed the liquor selection. They carry many of the usual brands such as Svedka, Jose Cuervo, Captain Morgan, Guiness, Etc., but also all kinds of locally made beers and spirits such as Deaths Door Distillery and Capital Brewing (both local to Middleton), New Glarus, Pearl Street Brewing, and more! Also a large wine selection-- we even saw wine in a can: LOL. The prices seemed fair. Some of the hard liquor seemed a pinch pricier than you might see at other liquor stores (when I say a pinch, I mean not enough to make me squirm, just a few bucks difference), but the beer was reasonably priced: paid about $8 for a 6-pack of craft beer. Staff was nothing to brag about. Not rude, but kind of just there. Pleasant enough. I will no doubt be back, I plan to make a greater effort to explore the towns I think I know but actually don't. read more

It doesn't match the layout of the other Barriques and the seating area is a little cramped and sparse. Still serves the great coffee that I have come to know and love but unlike their other cafe's, the staff is a little surly and indifferent at times. read more

Dang you lavender mocha. This is why I'm up all night writing reviews. The parking is a bit intimidating and sparse but I always seem to find a parking spot after 6pm. Usually by then the baked goods are half off. Score! Seating is ok, a bit cramped near the fireplace but plenty to choose from elsewhere. Last night was the first night I've seen someone going around offering Andes mints and cups of water to customers. Cool. I'll be coming here for a while and hope to explore the other half of the store. read more

This location is a bit unpredictable and inconsistent. Today's 4-shot latte is fine. But my last one had a strange taste - dirty like a martini - a bit of a briney flavor with a pickle finish. The service today was quick and efficient despite a modest line. The woman at the counter was very pleasant. I'll take a locally owned joint over a chain any day. read more

I'm going to say that I like it better here than the downtown Madison location for a very simple reason: Seating. It's also a great option to have when stuck out in Middleton for the holidays. This place helps that little Middleton stay classy and it helps me stay sane when I make my annual return to the west side. Otherwise, I'm staying in Madison for my coffees. read more

Amazing. We stopped here looking to try a different coffee shop. Used to Starbucks. This place is awesome. I ordered an iced chai and morning bun. We asked for a knife to cut it in half. They offered to cut it for us and warmed it up. The coffee was delicious. They have our business. Hard to find a gem like this one. They have wine and little gifts plus all sorts of food. The only other Barriques I've been to is the one on Old Sauk and this one is probably double its size. The counter (ordering station? "bar"?) is right in the center, with seating along three walls and wines along the fourth - facing the baristas. The wine selection actually seemed pretty extensive, with multiple aisles along with the wall of wines like the Old Sauk location. I got a honey lavender latte which was pretty delicious (there were random honey spots on my cup though so that was kinda annoying ). And the staff was very nice so I suppose I went during a good shift since I didn't encounter the subpar staff that other reviewers have mentioned. With respect to parking, I guess I got lucky. I parked in the small lot (6 spots total, I think) right by the door and I imagine someone had left just few seconds before I got there. But there are a bunch of other small lots nearby, along with 2-hour street parking. read more

Nice overall atmosphere, the fireplace and comfy chairs are very inviting. Coffee is always good and the Cowboy cookie is a round slice of ambrosia. Huge wine selection and wine accessories are also a draw. read more

I enjoy this coffee shop. Nice decor, clean, and a nice environment to work in. But on two separate occasions the staff has forgotten to complete my order, both times have been for similar reasons, someone would start making my drink... Then get distracted (texting), and not finish the order. They staff is friendly enough, but they are still a service biased company. Forgetting to finish making my drink twice in the same month. Is annoying, but not the end of the world. My suggestion would be not to get drinks to stay, they are always prompt to go drinks. read more

I walked into Barriques yesterday to drink an iced soy mocha and play cards with my friend. We have been doing this for about 2 years on a semi-regular basis. I usually order the Iced Soy Chai (which is phenomenal), but that day I decided I wanted a little more caffeine and went for the mocha. It is a really key point that I drink soy milk because I am lactose intolerant and have major issues with normal milk. I have never had any issues prior to yesterday with this issue. I ordered my iced soy mocha, confirmed that they understood I would like soy and when I got it, I drank it assuming it was soy milk. Soon after I finished it, I realized that something was wrong with the drink. I was enjoying a dairy free sandwich and a iced coffee. I have been up all night, nauseous amongst other problems. This only happens when I consume pure dairy cow milk. I do not enjoy being told that I am drinking soy milk when I am adamant that I cannot drink milk and being tricked. I will not be a regular customer anymore to this establishment. The employees are not careful and obviously do not care! No thank you. read more

This is not the location I generally frequent but I was upset that the friendly, welcoming attitude I experienced at another location wasn't continued here. A combination liquor store, bar, coffee shop and diner. This is not what I expected when I searched for coffee shop. The place looked old but the building is not that old. You ordered at the bar and then waited until parts of your order was called out. I received my drink and wrap separately. The menu was posted over the bar and I would it hard to read. The expresso and the wrap were good. The wrap was so stuffed I had to eat it with a fork. I saw a sign that I could buy hard liquor by the drink. I do not know if you can get wine or beer by the glass. I did not see anyone drinking at lunch. read more

Amazing, cute little place in Middleton. My wife and I stumbled across this place while in town for an event for our daughter. A bit pricey but nice ambiance and good food and coffee. Seating is nice inside. Could use more outside seating. The only outside seating is crammed close to the entrance door and is awkwardly situated. Otherwise, a really cute little place to go. Been going to Barriques in Fitchburg for maybe 10 years? The staff there was always a bit uppity, but I put up with it because the food and atmosphere was good. I think I even gave them good reviews in here before. My trip to Middleton pushed the needle over the edge, however. Pretty good line waiting at the register, while one of the wait people was ambling about, taking her own sweet time getting back. Several other staff went past the register without so much as an acknowledgement that anyone was there. When she finally decided to come back, turns out they were out of several items that were on the menu, and response was no apology, no sympathy, just "if they aren't in the cooler over there we're out." Left and went to Culvers. Food and atmosphere are a bit less, but at least friendly and conscientious humans work there. read more

I have yet to walk away from this Barriques location NOT disappointed. Horrible, horrible, horrible service. Slow, unfriendly staff who refuse to even talk to you sometimes! I have the unfortunate fate of working in the same business district as this location, and it is the ONLY coffee shop within a reasonable distance. I now drive 10 minutes out of my way to work to get coffee and breakfast because I refuse to give those people any of my money. I am updating my review from 2 stars to 4. They re-did the menu and it's much better. Fresh made sandwiches rather than just premade ones in the cooler. I have ended up ordering tea there since and have always been given the tea bag as well as refills on hot water. Perhaps the person who made my tea that day and didn't give me the tea bag was training. I don't know, but they certainly stepped up their food game read more

I love almost everything about the Middleton location. Big tables to study at or meet friends, great selection of wine and beer, free internet access and busy enough to not feel strange but slow enough that you can almost always get a seat. Also their wine tasting is a lot of fun and interesting when I want to play adult for a night. The only downfall is that the service can tend to be somewhat indifferent to you standing behind the counter. Overall a great place. read more

Although this might not be my favorite Barriques location, it IS closest to me. Still has the great Alterra coffee, but I'm just not sure about the atmosphere. The whole chain of Barriques around the Madison area are wonderful. This one boasts a fireplace that my friend and I spent hours in front of trying to stay warm last weekend. The staff was friendly and the atmosphere is cozy. The extensive wine and liquor collection made me almost salivate. 5 stars. read more
