On a fall Saturday around midterms before the Badgers start their away game, the many local coffee shops were packed as tight as a proper espresso grind tamped in to brew. I took a spiral path around the Madison Concourse hotel and across from the Overture Center in this beautiful old building is the sweetest wine bar and cafe. I had a nice oatmeal with my espresso, and sadly autocorrect wants to add an x to, espresso. The food is okay, it takes them a bit but they were also very busy. The espresso was perfect. I ordered the French toast cold brew and was low key kind of disappointed. The top foam was decently French toast flavored but after that it was just a plain cold brew that I needed to add half & half to make it taste better. The chocolate chip pumpkin bread that I bought however was tasty and would get again. read more

Always friendly service at this location and super accommodating to requests on orders. I went here on a Tuesday for lunch and got this power burrito with greens. The greens were a little overdressed, but the dressing is tasty and actually pairs really well as a dip for the wrap. The wrap itself was fine on the day, but the greens inside tasty a little like they had gone bad, with that sourish taste. Not sure if that was from grilling the wrap, or if they actually were turning. The greens on the plate were fine, so I just pulled out the ones in the wrap. My favorite thing is that there is so much space at this location and the tables for two actually and enough room for both people to set stuff on the table. One thing to note was that I sat upstairs and one of the lights kept flickering. Just became a little annoying as I was reading papers. Overall, still one of my favorite coffee shops in Madison. read more

So this location is located right near the state capitol. I say near because other coffee shops like Collectivo, Wonderstate, and Starbucks are all located right next to the state capitol which means that all of those are really, really, really busy especially on Saturday when the farmers market is hopping. Like I previously stated this place is located near the capitol about one block away but the line gets nothing like the other coffee shops and in my humble opinion the coffee is better here. I recommend the honey lavender latte! I will say aesthetically it's not as nice looking as the others but don't let the looks fool you this place is a hidden gem! read more

Fun! Staff is wearing masks, there are plastic protectors, it isn't super expensive, and when I went in the early afternoon, there were plenty of free tables. Study space: 5/5. Good lighting, plenty of seating and lots of outlets. Able to distance yourself pretty well, and music isn't overbearing, it's just right. Plus, there is some quiet conversation, but not a loud environment, honestly a great balance. I also like that there's multiple levels, I just love that feel. Lots of big windows and assorted seating. Drinks: 5/5. Good size for the price, decently spiced chai, and looks like they have baked goods and food. Will update if I try it. 3.5 stars, really. It's a trendy spot and the upper level is cool. Always enjoy places that have food and coffee/tea and adult drinks :) To eat, I had the winter waubesa market bowl with bacon. It was good but I was extremely disappointed in the bacon add. It was the thinnest paper bacon I have ever seen in a "restaurant". I would not ever get this again for $1.75 - let's call it $2 after tax + additional tip. Not worth it. The cauliflower was good and the overall bowl itself, but another issue was that the proportions were off. There was mostly grains in this thing. They should add more to it like edamame, or seasoned tofu, or something. Also, I feel they should come up with a numbering system to give patrons when their food is ready that employees walk out, versus shouting and having customers walk to the counter. This is a place where several people come alone to work, often with earbuds. Just seems like there should be a system that better suits the customers. I was here working with my earbuds in and computer on. It happens to be across the street from a homeless area/church. And I want to help the homeless, as a matter of fact I recently volunteered serving them dinner a few weeks ago at the exact spot across the street. There's another guy I buy food for when I see him on the street, and bought another person's dog some treats and gave him some money, too and I rarely hand out cash. Point being, I'm very empathetic to people who have less than me. Just making that clear. However, I kept getting bothered and hit in the arm or shouted through my music while inside to be asked for money, to use my cell phone, etc. this was 3-4 times. I became frustrated with it because I'm working at this moment, not the right timing to donate to those less fortunate. Maybe the tough conversations need to be had or the actions put in place so that patrons can be comfortable and won't be continuously, uncomfortably approached while inside trying to work on something. I'm just making this point so that it's understood this could be turning off customers. Pretty much I'm still looking for my favorite coffee/cafe/drink spot to spend time working on weekends. This doesn't seem like it is the spot I'm looking for. But, I would not be against stopping by again if it's convenient. read more

So, I still like this place, and if I'm ever working past 7pm, this is generally my go-to spot. That said, I come here much less frequently. I'm not sure why, but it just doesn't feel comfortable. Maybe I've just grown to like cushiony chairs, which they lack here. Maybe I've grown weary with being asked for "a couple dollars" every other time I come here. I'm not sure. I'm sure I'll come here more in the summertime when the patio charts and tables are back out - easily my favorite part about this location is being able to sit outside with a beer or a glass of wine on a cool summer night under the trees - but for now, I generally only come here if I'm **cravinggg** a glass of wine, but also really need to get a lot of work done at an obscene time of the night. I've also grown a bit of a curmudgeonly vendetta against the "corporate" coffee chains in town, especially when local places seem to be comparatively struggling. I would not recommend this, or any, Barriques for coffee. If I happen to be at any Barriques during the day, when it's too early to personally justify an alcohol beverage, I default to their Italian sodas - a bit of a novelty, as I can't think of anywhere else I can get one around here. But the coffee/espresso is...not great. If you're downtown, stop pretty much anywhere else for coffee. I'm also not a fan of buying food that is more substantive than a pastry, and even the pastries are (or at least, seem to be) more on the "factory-made" side of quality. Takeaways: great place to work when you want a beer or wine on a summer night. Otherwise, mostly just another coffee chain location with questionable wifi service. read more

Great take on the traditional coffee house. I had an amazing salad with almonds and brussel sprouts and chicken with whole grain rice. Paired it with a delicious vegetable soup and citrus tea. After having cheese curds 2x in 1 day, we were in desperate need of something lighter for lunch. A quick Yelp search led us to Barriques for some salads. We walked over from Monona Terrace at about 1:30pm and managed to grab a table. You order at the counter and then they call you when your food is ready. I had their Yahara Market Bowl - pineapple salsa, jicama, edamame, greens, and avocado-coconut-lime dressing on fresh greens. I opted to add on chicken and Wisconsin cheddar. It was really tasty - very refreshing and filling at the same time. It really filled me up and hit the "healthy" spot. I also had their White Peach Tea served iced, which took about 5 minutes to prepare, but was also really refreshing once I had it. Service was friendly and our bowls came out quickly. If you're in the area and are looking for a quick, yet healthy bite, give Barriques a try. read more

Barriques is by far my favorite local coffee shop in Madison! The West Wash location is spacious with two floors and plenty of tables to accommodate the many visitors there to study, converse, etc. I've had several of their drinks, including their cafe latte, the honey lavender latte, chai latte, Blueberry rooibos tea, and chai tea. Honestly I've never been disappointed with anything I've ordered from there! In addition, they've got some great food and bakery items as well! As a rewards member, I was given a free cookie or scone with my next drink purchase, so I picked up one of the chocolate chip scones. It was SO good!!! There was an espresso glaze drizzled on the top of it, and it was heavenly. I'm definitely looking forward to having another one of those again! I think just about any of their bakery items would be really great. Overall, Barriques is amazing. The staff is friendly and personable, the drinks are great, and the food is delicious. Severely disappointed. This is a $9 Artisan California Turkey sandwich. It's not worth Half that. The bread is soggy, there is barely two slices of avocado on it. The turkey is about the lowest quality deli grade turkey you can imagine. The highlight of this meal are the Zapps chips. Shame on you Barriques. I threw half of it away. I work across the street with hundreds of others, I no longer recommend you to anyone. There are plenty of other fine destinations on and around the square. I'm not sure if this is actually the largest Barriques (actually, that might be Middleton?) or if it just feels that way, but the double-level coffee shop is great at not feeling as cramped as many of the other downtown spots. I tend to gravitate here in the fall and winter for hot cider (with the optional caramel addition given into on occasion) and the Mexican hot chocolate - you definitely feel the kick in the back of your throat by the time you've reached the bottom. Like other locations, they've got a healthy selection of wine, and I love that they've had some quirky small gifts/candy near the counter for as long as I can remember. There's also a food menu - I haven't eaten at this particular Barriques but I've enjoyed several items at their other locations. Service can be a bit slow, but it's always been friendly and I've always gotten exactly what I've ordered, so I'll take it. read more

Barrique's is a wonderful coffee shop - ample seating, a wonderful loft-like layout, and of course, solid coffee. This was a standby coffee shop for me as a college student, and years later, it's still serving quality espresso in a laid back atmosphere perfectly conducive to sending your afternoon emails or studying. I ordered a single macchiato on my most recent visit, and I was impressed at the strength and body of the espresso. This stuff will wake you up - in a good way! I did not try the food, but they offer a decent selection of sandwiches and salads, and the pastries looked very tasty as well. In our effort to try out local favorites in any city we visit, we went out of our way to try this "local" cafe for breakfast and coffee. Upon entering, we loved the decor and the fragrances from the walls of coffee beans wafting through the air. We immdediately ordered a local brew and a cappuccino. We were also intrigued by the food menu and opted for the avocado jack which included avocado to make the gf happy and jack cheese to make the bf happy. The full bore brew was delicious and tasty. The flavor was dark and did its job to wake me right up. The sandwich was tasty, light, hot, and complete. All the flavors tied together so well. There wasn't any complaint from us. As we travel throughout the city the rest of the weekend, we then noticed several other Barriques locations and realized this was not as small as we thought. I was just looking for my review of this Barriques to suggest it to someone in Madison and realized I hadn't written one... which is strange because I've been here a couple of times. You'll find Alterra Coffee that's roasted in Wisconsin and brewed up here in the proper way. This works for me. It really does. The outdoor sidewalk right off of Capital Square also works for me. The cafe fare and wine. Yep. Workin'. The cute artsy interior with two levels of seating and lots of free wifi for my laptop to soak up? It all works for me too. Very cool looking place. I love the interior and the industrial feel. The food however.... I ordered the. Blackhawk breakfast bowl and it is canned black beans with zero seasoning, "pico de gallo", and college cafeteria eggs. Topped with 3 little bits of avocado. This has no seasoning at all. It even salt. Also theres no hot sauce to go with it or salsa or anything. Just not the great of food, very cheaply done and not fresh like other cafes in the area. If you're looking for coffee and a space to work this place is it. If you're looking for a satisfying meal stop somewhere else. read more

Neat little coffee shop by the Capitol. There's so much VARIETY and choice (that's what usually gets me). They have the usual coffee, then their interesting specialty drinks (Mexican mocha, German Chocolate Cake, etc). They have soups, salads, sandwiches. They even have alcoholic choices. They have upstairs and downstairs seating and an eclectic assortment of goodies- vintage looking gum, mugs, trinkets. The servers are really friendly. Overall, a cute little place (though they can definitely crank up the heat here in blizzardy Madison!). EDIT- they REALLY need to do something about their fruit flies. Mine was a sweet one (Iced Mocha) and I could manage to finish it. My wife's was not sweet (Iced Coffee) and she threw it away after sipping a couple of times. I am usually reluctant to throw food/drink away and so I tried to take over hers. But I agreed with her after sipping once. The coffee (probably only iced ones) had a strange disgusting smell and taste. I tried this place and Bradbury's Coffee on the same day. Bradbury's was way better. Not even comparable. Great bistro in the downtown area! Barriques offers a variety of coffee, teas, and my favorite part - WINE. They have an extensive wine rack full of popular, trendy wines for a good price. The food here was amazing. I had the pesto chicken bowl with chamomile tea. It was flavorful and filled me up! The service was amazing! The cashier was able to accommodate my complex order and find substitutes for ingredients they ran out of. He was very kind and had great recommendations as well. Ok, seriously, the Sprocket smoothie is A MUST. It is SO good. I could drink one of those every day. I'm going to try to replicate it at home -- I live in Chicago so coming here whenever I want isn't exactly an option. This smoothie is thick, has strong flavors, and is filling. I wasn't hungry for hours after I drank it and it left me super satisfied. For $5, I am overly pleased. I've been coming to the Barriques on West Wash for many years. My favorite is the small traditional cappuccino - perfect proportions of espresso and foamed milk. The store was getting a little shabby, but they freshened up a bit a while back and have new table tops. Most of the baristas are friendly and efficient. However, the internet has not been working for over a week. Just got back from vacation and it is still not working. I guess the management is unconcerned, the baristas indicate that it is out of their hands. To get a connection, I have been going elsewhere instead. Come on, Barriques! read more

This place is great! The coffee isn't acidic, which I like. The capital city breakfast sandwich is SO good. I do recommend getting there ahead of time if you have to be somewhere. You could be waiting 10-15 minutes for your coffee/food depending on how busy they are. The only complaints I have is that my coffee doesn't always taste the same and I have the same order everytime. I've ordered the capital sand which 4 times and out of the 3, they still put a slice of cheese on it when I asked them not to. Overall a great cafe! read more

I really enjoy this location of Barriques. I like how it is slightly off the square! With this Barriques, I love how there are too different levels of this cafe. The first floor has a lot of merchandise, alcohol, and where you can place your order. There's also a few tables on the first floor. The second floor has mainly seating for people to use. My office recently moved to a new location just down the street from Barriques. I've been there for lunch several times now. The food is consistently good. I really like the pesto chicken salad. I have had a few of their wraps and they are great also. I didn't know that I had to grab my own chips when ordering a sandwich. They are kind of hidden off to the side. I got back to the office without chips. So be sure to grab them. :) The staff is friendly and there is plenty of seating upstairs. They also have a wine shop with a nice selection of wine.
