The restaurant is beautiful, you would almost think you were someplace chic in Manhattan, especially since most of the guests were from the NYC area. The service was very good. The food was not great and expensive. The pasta dish was bland, and the steak ordered medium rare was burnt outside and raw inside. I don't mind paying a high price, but the value has to be there. I guess I was paying for the ambiance. If you want to dine or have a cocktail in a beautiful setting you should go. If you actually wanted to eat a good meal perhaps you should go elsewhere. read more

I've been coming here for years, and it's always been one of my favorite restaurants. The food has consistently been amazing, which is why this visit was so disappointing. I know there's a new chef, and unfortunately the difference was noticeable. My favorite salmon dish came out undercooked and mushy, so I couldn't eat it. My friend's medium-rare steak was overcooked. I also ordered a glass of wine that was forgotten. After reminding our server, she told me they were out of it, so I ordered something else, but it didn't arrive until I was almost done eating. We were also surprised that the bread, which used to be complimentary, is now an extra charge. I'm hoping this was just an off night, but after this experience I can't recommend the restaurant the way I used to. We arrived the night before Thanksgiving (and all through the house, not a side dish was stirring not even a mousse). There were four of us and the place was respectably busy. But the first table we were offered was right in the bar, next to the entry we had just come in from the rainy night outside. The table was noisy, drafty and unacceptable. Fortunately one of our party said something and sure enough, there was a very nice corner table in a nice dining room in the back part of the house, away from the bar. Barrow House is a nice, fairly upscale, American menu. The tables were just far enough apart so we could hear one another without shouting. Barrow House is part of a collection of inns and restaurants in Dorset. It's sister establishment, the Dorset Inn, is just a hundred or so yards away at the town crossroads. I'd eaten at the Dorset Inn, but years earlier and have never been to the Barrow House. The menu was a pleasant collection of interesting choices in ample portions. We ordered the fig pizza for the table. I had some very fine oysters; some chowder was enjoyed, and we were intrigued and came thisclose to having the tuna nachos. Maybe next time. Wine by the glass and two Green State lagers, which for my order of the wagyu beef burger, that came with plenty of fries, enough to share with the table, was perfect. All in all, a pleasant and delicious meal was had by all. It's a fine gastropub, as it is called. You can sit in the bar and watch sports (something I would never EVER do, but chacona son gout!) Or you can have a fun table with friends in the dining room. The service was professional and gracious. From where we live, it's a reasonable drive. I had been highly anticipating eating here as part of my birthday celebration with my family. This restaurant has been a long time favorite of my father's but that changed this evening. As part of our appetizers, we ordered two of the Brussels Caesar salad. To our dismay, this so-called shredded Brussels salad included the thick woody cores which were thick and unpalatable. The aïoli mixed into the Wagyu tartare created a taste and consistency similar to ham salad. Although the salmon crostini, intended to be a shared appetizer according to the menu, came with a very generous portion of smoked salmon and cream cheese, it only included six very small pieces of crostini, which was woefully inadequate in proportion. Our female server did not make a single appearance after delivering our drinks and a runner delivered our appetizers. She did not stop by the table to see if everything was OK with the appetizers or if we needed anything. She only made an appearance after our entrées had arrived, at which time we asked about bread that we were seeing delivered to other tables and also asked if we could possibly get some more crostini so that we could finish the smoked salmon. Her tone and demeanor in responding was rather condescending, saying that if we wanted bread, we had to order it - we apparently missed it on the appetizer menu - and was quite rude when we expressed to her our issues with the salad, saying the menu stated it was shredded brussels sprouts, missing the point that the included thick chunks of core were an issue. Though she did return with more crostini we did not see her again until it was time for the check. After this experience, though the main entrées were quite good, the combination of the disappointing appetizers and the dismissive and unprofessional attitude of our server make it very highly unlikely that I would recommend this restaurant to others, nor will our family be likely to return. read more

Chef needs to have his dishes taste tested. For example the raw Brussels Sprouts in his Ceasars salad were sliced about a quarter inch thick and it was like trying to eat wood chips. This place is trying too hard to give a New York city experience in a small town in Vermont. I had Waygu beef tartare and with the aioli it was mixed with was more like a ham salad. My son is a Le Cordon Bleau trained chef and he couldn't believe how terrible this was. To top the experience off our waiter was rude and said you should have read the menu when we asked for bread and she replied you have to order it. All for a $500 dinner for four on my daughters Birthday. I live locally and all I can say is never again. read more

Was staying at the Dorset Inn and decided to try this place. Excellent food! The staff were helpful as well. I had the lobster bisque and lobster Spaetzle. Was in the mood for lobster that night! Never had a lobster Spaetzle, but it was so good! We ate outside the beginning of September, perfect night, then went inside to a bar area to have dessert. Very tasty peach cobbler. This was on a Tuesday night off season after Labor Day, so of course everything would be quiet, but there was a local scene over at the bar which was perfect as everyone was friendly. I liked the menu very much - plenty of casual food & entree's although this place is pricey. We both got cheeseburgers as we wanted a casual meal. The quality of the meat was awesome & the burgers cooked perfectly. I enjoyed my fries immensely & my husband subbed his fries for mash potatoes which he liked. Dessert was a tasty apple pie which we loved & plenty for 2 people to share! Our service was good despite the long walk the server had to make to go inside. Literally the best meal my wife and I (& family) have had in years! The food was spectacular. Cooked to perfection. The chef masterfully put flavors together with beautiful presentation. Stayed 3 nights. The accommodations were great. Spacious bathroom (for an inn) with a walk in shower and very clean. Fresh towels every day. Highly recommend. Came with breakfast vouchers for the Dorset Inn owned by same hospitality group (I think). The food was top notch. We came to VT expecting to eat at the restaurant once and then explore... we ate there each night. Everything we ordered was great. Staff super friendly and suggested a few items on the menu that didn't disappoint. We ordered: burger and chicken with stuffed bread first night, osso buco and salmon the second night and wings, crab fritter fries and a salad the last night. So many opportunities for a dish we didn't like ... but it never came. Compliments to the chef. This is a hidden gem. At least we think so. Maybe it is better known in and around this area. Took friends for their birthday dinner. Wonderful service & delicious food. However, after reviewing the receipt the next day, noticed a couple of "up-charges" for the alcohol that were never divulged by the waitress. Shouldn't this have been noted? Wasn't it HER responsibility to let us opt-out of the more expensive alcohol? This is a very upscale restaurant, and I'm sure many of their patrons don't have to worry about the cost or money, but WE are middle-class, watch our pennies a little bit closer, and only visit "fluffy" restaurants for special occasions (ex. Anniversaries, birthdays). Suffice to say, it was a lovely evening with friends on their birthday, but we will not be going back anytime soon, as paying off that bill will take a bit of time. read more

We had a reservation that we made months ago, the day before our reservation the restaurant emailed me and said they had a private party booked in the room we wanted so could they place us someplace else in the restaurant. I said sure, it was for my birthday. We get there and they put us in this little bitty back room with two extremely loud women. How have I never reviewed this place? Every year we horse show in VT for a week or two and we have to eat here. The food is amazing. This year they tweaked the menu and a few of my favorites were missing but everything new I got was just as good. There is also always some amazing cocktail made with fresh blueberries, it changes but it's always just as good. Husband and I enjoyed the food ( although serving size was bit small) - for appetiser, I got the scallops crudo (yum!!!), husband had the beets salad, he also had the pumpkin hummus (good!!!), for my main dish I had the wild mushroom pasta (truffle yum!!!), and for dessert, we had the apple crisp, good too!!! After a very enjoyable experience a year ago, we decided to return to the Barrows House. This visit stated with a couple drafts from their brief but craft intensive list of beers. Since they had tapped out of the porter on the list that I was interested in, I decide to try a 14th Star Valor Ale ($6) from Burlington, VT while my wife choose a Foley Brothers IPA ($8) from Brandon, VT. There is definitely some nice beer being brewed in Vermont. We are suckers for Shishito Peppers ($9) when we see them on the menu. Here they are "blistered", herb salted, and according to our server, locally grown. Years ago when we were first introduced to them in NYC they could only be had from Spain. These were delicious and substantial in quantity. We also decided to try their Tuna Meatballs ($13) as an appetizer. These were soy glazed, served on a bed of seaweed salad and topped with strings of crispy leeks. Blindfolded, there was no way we would have guessed that we were eating tuna, but we would have still enjoyed them just as much. For her entrée, my wife chose the Stuffed Acorn Squash ($24). It was filled with roasted root vegetables, quinoa, and some maple oil. It was a very tasty and enjoyable combination of flavors. My entrée was the Seared Scallops ($32) served with a butternut squash purée, tempura green beans, grapefruit ginger gastrique, and toasted cauliflower. While I don't recall the cauliflower, the dish was otherwise a wonderful mix of textures and flavors. We both left room for dessert and coffee by packing some entrée to take home. Both the Fall Spiced Crepe Crème Brûlée with caramelized apples ($8) and the Pumpkin Cheesecake with apple cider Crème anglaise ($8) were a perfect ending along with robust cups of coffee ($2,50 each). Coincidentally, we had the same server as for our last visit a year ago. She was as friendly, attentive and helpful as then. I expect we will continue to return. read more

So my wife and I stayed here for the last few days. First of all, the people here at the inn are wonderful. They are welcoming and inviting and want to make you stay very memorable. Staying here has been great. The rest depends on what you want to experience. They have a restaurant and bar. Our room was above the bar and we can hear the music playing in the bar in our room. Now, they stop all music at 10pm. This is reasonable but we go to bed before 10pm. We ate at the restaurant tonight and I'm torn about this review. We had a reservation but we got treated as if we didn't. They put us in a corner of the restaurant. Our server came over, somewhat late, and asked about drinks. We ordered drinks and rarely saw her again. My wife ordered the duck and it was very good. I ordered the swordfish and unfortunately it was dry. We ordered the desert waffle and it was burnt. The night before we ate at the Dorset Inn. The atmosphere was way more to our liking and the food and service couldn't have been better. We will be back to visit Dorset, but we'll stay at the Dorset Inn. read more
