Since I was staying at the Upper Pass Lodge for my ski trip I figured I would give the Red Slate restaurant a try. Located in the lobby of the lodge is a small bar and a nice sized dining room. The decor is rustic and casual, with 5 or 6 tables with plenty of room. The restaurant is not open on Monday or Tuesday. The menu features American classics and prices are very reasonable. The night I was there they had a $10 build your own burger special that included fries and a beverage. Based on the server'sI suggestion I ordered the Fish and Chips. The Fish and Chips came out nicely presented on a rectangular plate, a large fillet of Haddock on top of a large portion of fries and small metal cups of coleslaw, ketchup, malt vinegar, and tarter sauce. The fish was nicely battered and fried resulting in a crispy crust and perfectly cooked fish. The fries were tasty and crisp and the coleslaw was very nice. Overall a very nice version of the classic. If you are in the Londonderry, Vt. area and looking for a good meal the Red Slate restaurant is a great option. Classic food well made at reasonable prices in a comfortable room. Well worth a visit.

We were staying at Trailside Condominiums. After a day of skiing, I was too tired to drive any distance so we decided on Red Slate at Upper Pass lodge. Haven't been there in well over a year. In any case we were seated immediately & perused the menu. The menu is limited but it does have something for everyone. In my opinion better to have a good limited menu rather then an extensive lousy menu. I was grazing again. I had New England Clam Chowder & Chicken Wings, the rest of the clan had - Fettuccini Pesto with Shrimp, Baked Haddock & Chicken & Cheese Quesadilla. Everything was good, can't complain & the prices are extremely reasonable for a restaurant located slop side. Prices range from $8 for appetizers to $21 for the most expensive entree - steak. Good value for families on a budget.

This restaurant is in the Upper Pass Lodge at Magic Mountain. Wednesday night is build a burger night with $2.00 draft beers. The beers are considered sampling and the glass is about 8oz. I thought it was a good deal with several beers to sample. My companion and I had already had burgers two days in a row and opted for something else on the menu which caused alarm with our server. She went out of her way to let us know we must be simpletons to not order burgers on burger night. We ignored her borderline rude behavior and ordered fish & chips and a Montreal steak. We should have ordered burgers. The steak was $21.00 and that's pretty close to what I've seen elsewhere for the same cut. It was cooked to perfection as I requested. Very tender with a mushroom & onion sauce. It would have been a home run if not for the heavy handed seasoning. The salt was aggressive. The worst I've ever seen a decent steak ruined. I mentioned it to our server and she said a customer said the same thing the week before. Our server went and told the "chef" who said "there's nothing I can do about it. It's the Montreal seasoning I have. I had the same seasoning in my spice rack and threw it out. It's primary ingredient is sodium. Of course you could always use less . . . Or supplement something less offensive. Your a "chef", figure it out. The sides were mashed potatoes & carrots which were good. My companions fish came out with a red flag of its own. It was strangely long & flat and the batter was very dark. The dark color indicates either dirty oil in the fryolator or too long in the fryolator or a combination of both. I tried it and surprisingly it wasn't bad. The batter wasn't too thick and the fish was light and flaky. It just didn't look appetizing. The chips weren't good. Same dark color as the fish, greasy, chewy not crunchy. I ordered lava cake for dessert. It was clearly microwaved. The cake was tough and chewy. Too positive mentions, we had maple buffalo wings as a starter. They were absolutely delicious. We were fighting over them. And my companion loved her cole slaw. There is potential here. We will try again next time we're in the area.

    Spicy maple wings.

Arrived at approximately 7:30 PM, looked like all the tables were occupied but found a seat at the bar. The live music was LOUD. The bar was hopping, bartender was right there - with 'what can I get ya?' - Malbec & a menu...no we don't have it...ok, I'll take the Pino noir & took a few minutes to peruse the menu. The vino arrived very quickly & I was ready to order. ordered New England Clam Chowdha & Chicken Pot Stickers. My chowder arrived at 7:57 according to the photo. Chowdha - ok, more potatoes then clams, flavor was ok and then I waited for the pot stickers...& waited...& waited......at some point another bartender approached and asked if I need a refill on the vino. I said no, but were are my pot stickers? I've been waiting for 45 minutes, are they driving to Chinatown, I said...sorry I'll go and check as she sailed into the kitchen sunset never to return. The original bartender came back asking about a refill, I just shrugged my shoulders and mouthed out POTSTICKERS?...OH, I'll go and check...well at least she returned and refilled my vino. Shortly after, my 6 potstickers arrived in a basket. I try my first one...ok it's deep fried not pan fried but ok, kind or lukewarm on the inside. The dipping sauce was tasty. Ok tried another one, this one is kind of cool on the inside. Took the third one and cracked it open, it's cold & pink on the inside. THIS IS CHICKEN! pink? Called over the bartender and said it's pink on the inside - her response (precious)...they're frozen and pre cooked, NO! I said, they are cold inside & raw...ok she whisked it away...few minutes later another waitress come back with my original basket (re-fried with the split dumpling) & kind of snottily shoves it it front of me and said - sorry it wasn't hot enough for you. The time was 8:59PM. Could not take any photos since my phone died by this time. I must admit, she did take the Potstickers off the tab. Some advice DO NOT ORDER Potstickers! They're on a very s s s l l l o o o w w w boat from China or someone's driving to Chinatown somewhere There is nothing remarkable our outstanding about this establishment

The inside is charming and has that old wooden bar smell that I like. This would be a great place to grab a drink on a cold winter day. Very Scottish, lol. We were seated immediately for our 6:30 dinner reservation. We each ordered appetizers, which took nearly 45 minutes to arrive, even the cup of soup. Mozzarella sticks were nothing special, the cheddar tomato soup was really tasty. My mother in law loved the cock-a-leekie soup, and my father in law liked his scotch egg. It took another 20-25 minutes for our entrees to arrive. For a restaurant that closes at 8 pm, it was surprising at how long the food took to come out. They must have a very small kitchen. Everyone in our group liked their meal. My "loaded vegetarian baked potato" was just a full cup of sour cream and cheese on top of a potato with lukewarm broccoli on the side. A bit disappointing, with there were at least chives or seasoning. Basically nothing else vegetarian on the menu so this was what I was stuck with. Desserts were good, especially the sticky toffee pudding. I would call this place a step above average in the area, but service leaves a lot to be desired.

The drinks are usually on point as they were on this visit. But this time around I ordered a Grilled Cheese for about $14.. For the price you'd expect a good sandwich cooked correctly right? Well.. Honestly, I think they put the bread in a toaster, threw a piece of cheese on it.. Held it under a heat lamp to kinda try to melt the cheese then topped it with another toasted slice of bread because is was dry as hell. Definitely was not cooked with butter on a flat top. I could tell because the cheese wasn't melted onto the bread. Fries were luke warm as if they were lying in wait to be taken away.. Just not the best etiquette.. Not for the price. My cat could make a better sandwich. So no.. I wouldn't order their Grilled Cheese again.. Now if it was done right we might have a different story and better review. The bar service people were super cool though. The food prep isn't their fault. Very nice staff. Great libations. As far as ambiance, it's your typical ski lodge Bar. Bunch of happy people and families enjoying a bite or beverage on the mountain while chatting it up. There you have it! Cool spot.. (won't do the Grilled Cheese again though)
