This doctor, who was treating my daughter, told her on a Zoom appointment that he no longer needs to see her, as the report that she had Lupus from the blood test at Quest Diagnostics was incorrect. He said that instead of Lupus, she has severe anemia, and to find another type of doctor. First of all, he has never seen her. He only "sees" patients on Zoom. How can a Specialist doctor ( rheumatologist) properly treat a patient that never stepped into his office? He was very rude to her, and she tried to ask him several questions, but he brushed her off and ended the conversation. It was late afternoon, and obviously anxious to end his work day. He was very condescending and just wanted to get off the phone, bill insurance for the "visit" and get his $$$. read more

I would not recommend this provider at all to anyone, plus all rheumatologists seem to know each other as they're very few and far between your location of residency, you complain about one, to another Rheumatologist, and watch retaliatory actions happen, it happened to us with many professional witnesses aka my transport team, caregiver- spouse, as you cannot visit this provider, just Telehealth aka Zoom only, how do you diagnose patients over a phone, you can't, nothing taken into consideration when speaking with this phon-e provider, not a nice person in my opinion and yelled at me on a non zoom call ( I believe that's against policy with all Telehealth providers) over which meds I was willing to take and drop some of the stronger medication that tore up my guts, and in my opinion, when I said no, I'm not taking them, he berated and yelled at me with personal attacks on my weight ( lost 80lbs btw from taking myself off certain meds and switching to holistic diet all home cooked, all Natural low sodium bland foods)!,,,Worked out great for me going on 3rd year of this living style. I digress, in disregarding my other medical issues that were all taken from 4 different doctors at the time throwing med after med, all in play interacting, and this MD, did not or had done, no research or hear my situation out, again in my opinion, it's about this provider pushing potent meds that made me physically ill and to cause false bloodwork results and no knowledge of my osteoarthritis/ degenerative arthritis in all joints and back/ autoimmune condition/ chronic physical pain and the use of supplements for male hormones, testosterone precipitations, resulting in high white T counts, and I called him out for his non zoom appointment where he ranted freely and even threatened to drop me as a patient if I didn't follow his directives on medications (3) where now my rheumatologist needs have been solved and it's one simple pill and hard discipline, fortitude, and finding alternatives to replace taking more and more medication your body doesn't need. Sad reviewing this, but his staff run an unsafe office. I called 2xs and MRI staff called 3xs double checking my referral was accurate because it seemed incorrect body part to them... it was. I was changing clothes at the MRI, preparing for painful metal shot (contrast) and years of side effects in my pelvis when they finally reached Shibuya and discovered don't need shot and wrong body part! Minutes left before I was on the table! Then Shibuya's staff call me wanting to schedule again this same incorrect procedure, an hour later and fight me when I say Shibuya said wrong bones and no shot needed. No apology, no knowledge of my own medical info, and whaddaya know manager is on another call. Hours later and she still hasn't called. The Xray place were willing to priority me and do the correct MRI this same evening, can't because Shibuya's staff don't want to call me or fix THEIR WRONG PAPERWORK. I already eat 10 pain pills a day, I can't handle a messed up pelvis too! Shibuya has always been good to me, good bedside manner and very knowledgable with lots of tests and specialists and I had been improving greatly. I trusted him with my 24yr old body and by not double checking his own staff he put me at great risk. I'm filing a complaint with insurance and changing doctor, treating my spine is already risky enough without mistakes and neglecting to even fix them or say sorry. I'm 24, I can't be injured further or possibly permanently when I've got a life to live out there and the arrogance of saying the words doctors say to me are less accurate than their silly files is unbelievable. Medical staff directly effect our health and lives, train them better or fire somebody because me and that other office caught the mistake, this time. For the past 7 years I've have a good outcome dealing with him both personality and information and treatment and good outcome with labs I hate having to go to a new doctor but I did find a good one. read more

I saw Dr. Shibuya when i was dealing with my first case of gout. Unlike the podiatrist i saw initially who simply prescribed me drugs, Dr. Shibuya ordered tests to try and isolate and explain the problems i was having. In all of my visits he was very kind, professional and his staff was as well. I'm astounded by the negative reviews since I had a great experience and he was highly recommended by a co-worker had suffered with gout for years before being treated by Dr. Shibuya. read more

You have to read THIS REVIEW!! I'm really not sure who all the reviewers are that have written such derogatory reviews. I never met Dr Shibuya before I started having issues with my hands. I called his office out of the blue and they were wonderful. He was so concerned about my condition and ran tests to make sure he could help me. He was so personable and his caring really showed through. He didn't just write Meds he wanted to make sure he could diagnose me first. Even other doctors complimented him on the thoroughness of his tests and said he did an excellent work up on me as a physician. He assured me on my first visit that he would get to the bottom of my hand pain and he did. His staff has always been accommodating and wonderful to work with, helping me at every turn. I even had a personal emergency and couldn't make my last appointment. They followed up with me and reset it with a smile and after my first appointment they called a few days later to see how I was feeling. I think it's best to try them for yourself. Sometimes people jump on their friends band wagon and as an impartial patient I think in this case they got it wrong. Patient forever. read more

After reading all the reviews I was so skeptical, I saw Dr Shibuya today, and he was one of the best doctors I ever seen. He asked me hundreds of questions and he was not rushing me....like 99% of the doctors out there. He was listening to me, and did not make me feel like an idiot. Dr. Shibuya is a very cold, uncaring physician and his staff is not much better. I usually get along very well with my treating physicians, but he's just not a nice person. Being diagnosed with an autoimmune disease has been a very difficult process. I stayed with him way too long. He didn't have the correct diagnosis and I was on the wrong medication and suffering greatly. I finally found a caring and wonderful rheumatologist, Dr. Balasubramian at Arthritis & Rheumatology. I've heard that the other doctors in her group are very good as well. I'm finally on the correct medicine and doing very well - finally. Please do yourself a favor and do not go to him! read more

I can't believe how unprofessional this doctor and the office staff are ! I was suppose to have a new patient apt yesterday, referred for rheumatology from my primary care doctor. However, when I showed up I was told by the staff "I didn't need to see a rheumatologist" and my " joint pain could be anything" When I asked why I was told: because "we can't provide you the help you need" and It would be " too expensive for me" they didn't know anything about me I'm actually quite well off and being insulted like that was so ridiculous. If they didn't want to see me why did they confirm my appointment? Avoid this doctor, and don't waste your time making an appointment. Also, I was required to provide my credit card info to even make an appointment, I thought that was odd and now I'm worried about giving my credit card info to an office that refused to to see me. I agree with the previous reviews that this Dr only cares about how much money he can get out of his patients. He has no manners, barely smiles and makes you feel like your an idiot if you ask a question. I work with someone who also see's this doctor and is looking to find one who cares about her and her pain. I was a patient for over three years and I seriously think he checked my inflammation or checked my swollen joints maybe three times. All he did was ask how I felt and wanted to keep changing my prescriptions and I continued to get worse. Now I am with a new doctor and the first day I saw her, she could tell how much pain I was in and took action to help me feel better. I am on public health insurance and I have never missed an appointment that I have made. I have never been to this office but they wanted me to give them my credit card information so they could charge me in case I missed my appointment. I have not even been to this doctor and already something rubs me the wrong way. If giving your credit card information to complete and total strangers is the accepted norm, I think we have a problem in this society. Looks like they are expecting to charge me one way or another with or without services and just want my information. read more

Do not go to this place, find a better establishment to get the help with your arthritis! They do not seem to care about helping scheduling appointments for their patients. Everyone has busy schedules and are not able to go to make appointments due to emergencies, so if a patient cancels they should not be punished!! I look forward to my visits with Dr. Shibuya since he's my favorite doctor! I feel he genuinely loves and cares for his patients. My husband and I rate him at the top for his knowledge and expertise : he is such a good teacher and lecturer; very thorough in his assessments. We can't imagine a more perfect Doctor, really and we both feel so blessed that he is an important part of our lives: helping to keep us healthy as we are both in our 80s but we feel happy each time we visit him and his friendly staff, because of his super optimistic attitude and delightful sense of humor. If you're in the market for a rheumatologist keeping looking. I was very unhappy with the way I was treated by Dr. Shibuya. If you ask a question he'll look at you like you're an idiot or too stupid to comprehend what's going on or what the answer would mean. He bullies his patients into doing what he wants on his time. I was told "I don't want to help you because you don't want help... so why waste my time" because I could not complete his tasks in the to days. He insulted me and my family and bluntly stated it was my parent's fault I was sick because I "spend too much time helping" my disabled dad. Overall, it is a hostile environment filled with verbal abusive physicians. Patients go to doctors for help, not to be bullied, torn down, or told they won't waste their time trying helping them. read more

While I won't go as far as the other reviewer, I have certainly been disappointed with this doctor. He is very uncaring when it comes to my visits with him. I have seen him be very friendly and accommodating with other patients, but he's never that way with me... and I don't know why. He always seems to be in a rush, and I'm lucky to get 5 minutes of his time. He's also only interested in the quick fix of writing a prescription. He never gave me a physical, or took a complete medical history, both of which are extremely crucial in evaluating a new patient. After seeing him several times, I have had it with his apathetic demeanor. His staff is also pretty bad. All together, they are very unprofessional. They never return my calls, or even bother leaving an answering machine on. The doctor gossips before you are out of ear shot. The MA's always look bored and have a terrible bedside manner. Every time I've gone I'm hoping it will be better and that he will actually take a moment to listen to me, but I always leave disappointed and disheartened. I can't even ask him any questions, because he looks inconvenienced, and is bolting for the door. They have never been blatantly rude to me, but for "health-care providers" they are seriously short on the care! read more

It turns out that the high sed-rate, high white count, other blood markers and joint pain that Dr. Shibuya jumped on as arthritis turned out to be stage 4 lung cancer with the liver and bones involved. Hence the bone/joint pain. I'm so fed up with arrogant specialists that do not look at the whole person and listen to the patient. Eight months have gone by without treatment for cancer. Finally, answers from a wonderful primary physician who ordered the correct tests and found the cancer. A long and difficult journey is now underway. My advise to patients, don't assume that this doctor looks at everything, get multiple opinions. read more

He likes to prescribe whatever meds. It's trial and error with him. Doesn't realize this trial and error puts a persons life on hold for months and the after effects of these meds seem permanent. Unfortunately I also had a negative experience with Dr. Shibuya. I either had Fibromyalgia or AS (ankylosing spondylitis). So he did a "medication therapy" with prednisone to make the decission for him. With Fibro im not supposed to react to the drug. But since i did he say it was AS even though I clearly have Fibro. That prednisone "therapy" lasted 2 months and has caused large dark marks on my stomach and misplaced fat deposit on the back of my neck. He instisted that i take sulfasalazine for the inflammation, he did not explain to me any risks involved with the drug and simply said it can give "tummy upset". I spoke to him 2 times about not taking the medication and go the herbal route, but again he insisted and down played herbal meds as not safe. He would constantly ask me to come to his office to "talk". I feel like i havent gotten anywhere with him cause he doesnt listen to my needs and is very short and stern. He did not consider the fact that i lived in a city 3.5 hours away from the office and that the disease has taken my energy. Recently i had to go to the ER for severe abdominal pain, and was diagnosed with gastritis and diverticulitis. Which was caused by the medication he insisted was good for me to keep taking.Ive been on bed rest for over a week and on a liquid diet. The antibiotics is not working so i have to go back to the ER cause the condition way be more serious. Since ive been seeing Dr. Shibuya my symptoms have worsened and i still dont know what im really sick with. Theres even more but i think this is enough. Im currently seeking a second opinion. I believe that his main objective is too get paid while my main objective is to get better. read more

I went to Dr. Barry Shibuya after receiving abnormal blood work results, on the first visit Dr. Shibuya talk to me like I was stupid and I thought he had some kind of a problem; however, in my next few visit he continued talking to me in that way and the day I returned to him to receive a diagnosis of what he think is wrong with me (and of course I was so nervous) he gave me a name to what I have and I got real scared since I was a healthy person who had no problems in the past. I looked at the doctor almost crying and asked what this means???!? Instead of explaining me what is this disease and what are the affects of the disease he just repeated the name of the disease slower like I was retarded!!!! I am not American born and raised; however, I do consider myself as knowledgeable in English and the way he repeated himself offended me deeply, and when I told him I need to know what is this disease he asked me if I need a translator?!?! Which at this point I decided already that I will never ever go back to this doctor which I am not sure how he became a doctor and how he still have customers with his attitude, rudeness, and coldness! I was still so confused and afraid and told him "no, I do not need a translator" so he told me that the receptionist will print me some papers from the internet and that I should do my homework and read about the disease. I was left scared, with many unanswered questions, and confused... In addition, he told me that for now there is nothing to do and to come for a checkup in 6 months, of course I won't be coming back to this doctor and I would not recommend him to ANYONE, instead and treating his customers in a proper respectful manner he is doing the opposite. read more

I just went and seen this doctor this week for the first time. His staff was very nice and Dr. Shibuya was very friendly. I felt very welcome there. I have seen many doctors in the past regarding some issues that I have and not one of them have pointed out what Dr. Shibuya found. He took his time explaining everything to me and made sure that all my questions were answered before he left the room. He asked me for my medical history, and did an exam. I did bring past medical history forms, labs and information that could help with my care and I am glad that I did. I will be going to back to him for my care. Dr. Shibuya saw my mother for her severe arthritis complications. He immediately put my mother on three fairly high dose medications without much discussion of potential side effects or how to avoid them, not to mention mis-information on how to time the doses to minimize said effects. Shortly thereafter she began having severe nausea, difficulty sleeping and increased heart rate. When she called his office prior to her next visit to ask about these side effects and how to minimize them, his nurse simply supplied his response "you should go see a sleep specialist and a gastroenterologist". This is an absolutely horrendous way to practice medicine. I don't understand how you can be in practice and not take responsibility for how you treat your patients. He was subsequently dismissive about my mother's discomfort and frankly, misery. He basically told her that she had to decide...did she want the pain or the other side effects. That was her choice. He does not listen to his patients nor does he seem to care about their health and happiness. His staff was also incredibly rude. Since this experience my mother has spoken to other patients who have seen him and have had similar complaints about his treatment. We have since gone to another rheumatologist who has subsequently taken my mother off of all the meds and is starting from scratch with her treatment and will work up to whatever meds she eventually will need to take. She was appalled at how my mother was treated and how her concerns were completely dismissed. I would not recommend Dr. Shibuya to anyone. read more
