This is a review of my first time trying out a Barry's class. The ambiance of this studio is honestly one of a kind. It was probably one of the most energizing and luxurious fitness class I have tried thus far, and I've tried maybe a dozen in Boston through Class Pass. Definitely pricey but you pay for the ambiance. I'm glad I got to try the Full Body strength class since it had a good mix of everything. Arrive early to use the massage guns. The treadmills were actually quite nice and comfortable, and the floor exercises were pretty standard and targeted the arms, legs, and core. The instructor Mike was excellent - he explained the exercises clearly, gave attention to each of us individually at some point, and overall really pushed everyone hard. It was a bit crowded in the class, but not as bad as some other classes I have been to -- the worst was the women's locker room in which it was impractical to have 15 people in a small room and only one bench. Maybe it's not as much an issue for the men's locker room. Other than that, I enjoyed the class a lot and will be sore the next few days! read more

The studio is beautiful and the class was great. I absolutely love Barry's and have taken classes all over the country. This is the first time I've ever rated less than 5 stars due to the less than welcoming front desk. What I love about Barry's is that it is BOTH an awesome workout AND shockingly friendly and welcoming. That has been my experience from DC, Philly, Santa Monica etc. Unfortunately, I've got to agree with other reviewers that the front desk welcome was, well, less than welcoming. I didn't love the experience for me, but it particularly saddened me when I saw the same lack of warmth and welcome play out for two first timers. I wondered if I had had that experience for my first class, if I would have ever come back. In fairness was, there were two folks working the 5 am 7.17 am desk and the woman with glasses was much, much friendlier. It was also 5 am! Here's hoping they improve this one element. I decided to try my first Barry's class and didn't know anyone there. As someone who works out a lot and has been to different fitness classes, I did enjoy the workout, but there were a few things that didn't do it for me. First, it's definitely an exclusive type of crowd. Everyone in my class clearly had money and seems to be pretty cliquey. There is a smoothie bar you can order at to have your severely overpriced smoothie ready after your workout. It was actually kind of ridiculous. You'd be surprised how many of the people use it, which I guess good for them?! Anyways, from a first time perspective, I would not recommend to someone trying to get into fitness and looking for an accepting community. Not one person said hi to me apart from the worker who checked me in and the coach when I entered the room, and it didn't seem genuine, just basic customer service. I was fine and did my thing but that atmosphere can definitely be a turn off and it can be really intimating for new people. This vibe translates into the class too. There was a lot of platitudes during the class. Very much an air of fakeness to how the class is structured and how the coach interacts with people trying to make it seem like we're all part of a family. The class reminded my of OrangeTheory, going through high-intensity interval circuits and alternating between aerobic exercise on the treadmills and resistance training with weights and benches. The room is oddly dark/dimmed and the music is LOUD. They do offer earplugs in the front, but wow they pump the music. Like I said, I did enjoy the workout, but it wasn't something I would go out of my way for, especially at the costs Barry's charges...! read more

Idk, you've been to one Barry's, you've been to all of them (I suppose the same applies to any chain or franchise). Same red room, same treadmill/floor breakdown, same rotation of Boston instructors, though a few differences: 1. The audio in the room was SO loud. It's never a good sign when the instructor starts off the class telling people to take some earplugs from the front desk. I don't mind loud music when I'm working out but this was on another level in terms of decibel range. Competing with the music was the instructor's mic, which was turned way, way up. My ears were ringing afterwards. 2. The treadmills seem really shoved against each other. I don't think I ever noticed how super close you are with the people to your right and left but I was nervous of swinging my elbows/arms for fear of hitting someone. Definitely felt claustrophobic and tightly pressed. I ran the first few intervals a point slower than I usually go because something about either the incline or the closeness was throwing off my spatial awareness. HOWEVER: 3. I appreciated the rows of lockers right next to the smoothie bar and check-in desk (something I don't think I've seen in either the downtown or Chestnut Hill locations). That way, you can immediately spring for the exit without having to navigate your way through the hordes in the locker room. 4. I also liked the benches they set up for people to wait for class to start. Wish Chestnut Hill and downtown offered the same so there's not one giant clump of people standing around. 5. Very convenient location in terms of transit (not so much for parking). I hopped on and off the express bus which stops right across the street. They do a newcomer special where you get 3 classes + free shake for $43. read more

Barry's Back Bay is no joke! The class was SO hard, but absolutely worth it. They really push you to the brink, more than any other HIIT class I've taken. If you're looking for a challenge, this is the place to go. The instructor was fantastic--super clear with instructions and really kept the energy high throughout the whole class. I walked out feeling completely spent, but also really accomplished. If you're serious about getting a great workout, Barry's is where it's at! read more

I really love Barry's. For a couple of years, I only worked out at home and was really scared to venture out and try Barry's. I finally worked up the courage a year and a half ago, and I was so happy I did. The class consists of half the time on the treadmill and half the time using dumbbells on the floor. With the music loud and lights dimmed, you can really focus on yourself and not worry about the people around you. I have found the most common split to be 2 segments on the treadmill and 2 segments on the floor, per class. This is great because by the time you're cardiovascularly exhausted and think you can't run anymore, it is time to switch to weights! Despite Barry's reputation as being one of the hardest workout classes, this doesn't mean you should be afraid to try it. You can make the strength sections as easy or as hard as you want to, depending on your selection of dumbbells. Also, the instructors always call out a range of speeds on the treadmill (e.g. 6-8mph) so you can always stick to the lower end (or even go lower if you need to). However, I will note that it is helpful to have familiarity with the names of common dumbbell exercises and an awareness of how to maintain proper form. The class moves quickly and the instructor will not always notice or correct you if you are performing a movement incorrectly. The locker rooms are very nice and have great products. There are some showers. My only complaint is that the classes are quite expensive and the 7:20am classes fill up very quickly. read more

Third Barry's to open in Boston. It's right across the street from the Copley Neiman Marcus and Au Bon Pain. Compared to the original on Chauncy, it offers the same great workout and amenities such as a juice/smoothie bar. The locker room, however, is humid and has poor ventilation-- take a shower and still feel sweaty and steamy. Compared to Chestnut Hill this one's clientele is less pretentious. Come, have fun, and feel good. Just shower at home. read more

The trainer Mac was not professional and he flirted with ladies and being rude to me when I told him someone (the lady he flirted with) put her stuff on my floor spot. Not recommending his classes. After reporting it to corporate, I only got an general apology email, no composition for the unpleasant experience I had, even I have been a loyal customer. Very disappointing about their customer service! Also the instructor was changed without notification in advance until I check the class in morning. When I called, the front desk staff tried to tell me their 12 hours changing policy lol what a joke! She finally agreed to put my class back after arguing, but she acted like she did me a favor when actually it supposed to be done without any questions in that case. Stop being arrogant and ignorant when you have no idea the instructor has been changed without telling customers in advance. read more

She played The Lion King-Circle of Life Trap remix while I was on the treadmill and I felt like Worknesh Degefa winning the Boston Marathon! I'm not even a runner and I was in the zone. Such a great work out class! I took the Full body workout (focused on lower body) with Kate, and she kicks butt! Love her raw, tell it like it is instructions. It was fun, rigorous yet not impossible. It was one of the best workouts I've gotten in a long time! I love how they put you on the treadmill for 10 min then weights/floor exercises for 10 min, etc. mixes it up. I was pretty sore 2 days after which is always a great feeling. Only downside is it is so expensive... $300/12 classes a month or $400/30 classes. But highly recommended. read more

Wow! Stunning new location in Back Bay adding to the numerous workout places you can go to. I checked in at the front desk and the girl showed me the map of the studio inside of where my spot was and where to get weights and stuff. The entrance lobby is fairly large and makes a great space to wait for your class. I watched as multiple people came out of the previous class dripping in sweat and starting wondering if this was actually a good idea or not. The locker rooms are to your left when you walk in and really new and nice. They have all the amenities you need for a post workout shower. There was a fair amount of newbies taking the class I was in, so the instructor gave a brief overview before class of what was going to be happening, while the studio was getting cleaned up from the previous class. The studio space is spectacular with all the floor work up front and the treadmills along the back. The room itself is fairly dark, but there's red lights across the ceiling. The lighter weights are close to the door as you walk in and everything else is towards the back of the studio. The class itself is broken down into multiple intervals of floor work and running. The instructor (Christina) was pretty intense throughout the class and you can feel the pressure from everyone working around you, but that being said everyone worked at their own pace. The class was a little crazy because there's cues for floor work and for the treadmill going at the same time, but it works. We went back and forth from the floor to the treadmill about 4 times, it's a long class, but goes by quickly - just do it and don't think too much about it. I came out dripping like I had showered in my sweat, so I'm very thankful for the towels provided! read more

The entrance to this place is huge, but unfortunately there is no real place to stretch/warmup. When it's cold and the front door opens you feel a gust of cold air since the check-in area is just one huge room, which isn't great for trying to get ready for a class. However, the red room is great just like all other Barry's studios and the instructors are fantastic. You will get a great HIIT workout here and be exhausted after. Every time I'm in Boston I head to this location for a great workout! There is a fuel bar with recovery smoothies and the changing rooms have lockers and showers with the amazing Oribe products. read more

I struggled with this review. I am an OTF fan and wanted to give Barry's a try as I'm trying to incorporate more HIIT/cardio/strength in my workouts. I was curious to see if I would like it better and perhaps join as a full member. In terms of the workout, there are a lot of similarities to OTF (you alternate between strength and tread). I didn't really have an issue with the quality of the workout. I actually found it "easier" than what I've experienced at OTF. I realize that makes the workout sound like it's not challenging, but I think it was purely coincidental: you do work up a sweat. Each day has a different body focus, so one day you might be doing mostly ab work and other days you will do glute/leg work. I happened to be there for "total body" day. My issue is with the cleanliness of the studio. In terms of the waiting area/locker room, everything looked clean. The problem is when you go to the studio, because you are constantly alternating between the tread/weights, there is no time to wipe them down in between usage. So you are potentially using weights/bench with someone else's sweat all over it. Gross. Even in a pre-COVID world, I always thought it was standard practice to clean equipment in between usage at any fitness studio, at least in my experience. Another issue I had was there was minimal new member onboarding at the front desk. They didn't bother to go over anything with me about the studio or sign any paperwork, which I thought was odd (other fitness studios I've been to I've always had to sign waivers), but whatever. It just didn't feel like a welcoming environment, and I wondered if it was because I registered for class via a promotion. The instructor was great and did spend a few minutes explaining some of the class structure, but I was left to my own devices for the most part. The Fuel Bar is definitely overpriced, but I had to try it. My shake was pretty good. They have advanced ordering so it is ready for you when class is over. I didn't hate the workout, but I gave this studio two stars. The overall member experience for me was subpar compared to what I've experienced at other fitness studios. read more

I've been working out at this Barry's for almost a year now. Prior to starting, I hated running! But now, I actually look forward to the intervals on the treadmill. This location is definitely the nicest one in Boston and has the most spacious feel to it. The pros: -large selections of workout classes -each day has targeted body parts -decent size lobby -friendly staff -clean equipment and restroom -Oribe products -self locking lockers -the after workout shakes! The cons: -small selection of merch -small bathroom (only 3 showers) -music varies, can sometimes be hit or miss -the last class is always around 7:40 pm, I wish there was a later one. read more

Barry's is a solid workout in a hectic format. Like other Barry's, the room features treadmills on one wall and stations for free weights and banded exercises on the other. There is great music and the workouts always leave me pretty pleasantly sore. The downside: the room, for some reason, is pretty dark during the workout and the one instructor blends in to the clientele, so it's tough to see the moves demonstrated - it's also a ton of people so they can't really monitor how folks are moving and I can see it being somewhat intimidating to people new to working out. People are pretty chill and help one another out, though, and there's a wide variety of fitness levels. It's a nice facility for sure, with a smoothie bar ($11 smoothies lol why), nice showers, and a really nice, large lobby. read more

Really really stunning space (larger and newer than the downtown location).The locker rooms are incredibly spacious and modern. Also it might just be my eyes but the red room seems brighter than downtown (although I prefer the dimmer red lights). Workout is the same great workout, but I have noticed that the weekend classes at Back Bay are only 50 minutes versus downtown which are all 60 minutes on the weekend. 10 minutes doesn't sound like that much longer but for how expensive the classes are, I prefer heading to DTX! Downtown is my home studio but if you live near the area, I would absolutely recommend Barry's Back Bay. read more

I love this location, set up, and instructors. A nice large check in room and very spacious entrance. The locker rooms aren't bad, and can get crowded per usual at any Barry's class but also nice that they have options to lock your belongings up in the entrance area, preventing locker room overflow. Similar to any Barry's gym they provide towels and toiletries post workout for you. Easy to get to in the heart of the Back Bay via car or the orange line or green line. read more

A friend brought me to Barry's a couple months ago and I'm addicted! Great class format with reps and treadmill. They also have the option to do double floor if running isn't your thing or if your legs need a break. My favorite instructor is hands down Chris M - super positive workout, but also challenging! His 6 am full body class on Friday's kicks your butt in the best way possible. He also cheers students on individually which is awesome. That said, I have yet to take an instructor that is bad. They all bring their A game to the class. Definitely worth the money - you will leave feeling awesome!!! read more

Picture this: you book a Saturday morning class at Barry's Back Bay and convince your two friends who are visiting from out of town to join you. Naturally, you plan your Friday night around it, refraining from drinking, hydrating, and going to bed early. You also plan your Saturday afternoon around it, booking a boozy brunch reservation to reward yourselves after a hard workout. You arrive at class 15 minutes early because you can't wait to order your smoothie, show your friends the locker rooms and make sure you're checked in on time. You head right to the desk and say your name (you actually repeat it 3 times because they keep asking you to repeat yourself). They say "You're all set, tread 8!" Class time is here and you head to tread 8. After stretching and beginning your warm-up, a man taps you on the shoulder and says "that's my tread." You two step outside to work it out and to your surprise, the staff members behind the desk side with him. They tell you you never checked in and they gave your spot away. I say "I spoke with you 10 minutes ago and brought two guests who also checked in under my name." They look you square in the face and say "I don't remember, I checked in like 40 people today :/" After being ruthlessly gaslit, you're somewhat vindicated when they finally admit the fault was their own and blame it on a "system error." "The class is full though, there's nothing we can do." Zero remorse. Thanks for ruining my Saturday and losing a long-time Barry's lover. Absolutely despicable behavior. read more

Absolutely wrecked and better for it. I came here, having found this place through Class Pass, and signed up for a Upper Body Focus class and it was 50 minutes of absolute destruction. They walked me through the process and really made an effort to alleviate my nerves and encourage me. The place is super clean and the staff is immensely friendly. If I could handle being in excruciating pain regularly, I'd go all the time because this place rocks. read more

I can't say enough amazing things about Barry's. The staff and teachers are amazing- not just for regular folks- I have a pretty severe ankle injury and they welcomed me into class! Of course I had to make modifications but I am so proud of doing the whole class every time- it made my year to be able to get a workout in!! From the pleasant front desk when I called prior to coming in to the AMAZING teachers I have had the pleasure of working with, I have loved every minute of my experience at this amazing gym! I enjoy the workouts here! I didn't like running before but now it is more fun with the set up. I wish there was more attention to form, and people wiped their benches more. The amenities are basic Barry's, which is great, although I have seen better eg the Philadelphia ones have Dyson hair dryers and hair ties. The selection of merch is wanting. Barry's Back Bay is here, and it's the best Boston location yet! If you haven't been to a Barry's Bootcamp class, it is broken down into 25 min of cardio on the treadmill and 25 minutes of strength training on the floor. Each day will specialize on specific muscles, Monday: Arms & Abs, Tuesday: Butt & Legs, Wednesday: Chest, Back & Abs, Thursday: Abs, Friday-Sunday: Full Body. They provide you with all the equipment, and even nice towels, so all you need to bring is yourself and some good running shoes! This studio in Back Bay is located adjacent to the Prudential Center bridge on Huntington Ave and is much larger than the Downtown Crossing location. There is a large waiting area with plenty of room for people to put their things into the lobby's lockers, socialize, pre-order a smoothie, and wait for the next class. The women's restroom is beautiful! There are surrounding mirrors and sinks/showers stocked with Oribe products. The decor is very modern and there are open areas to put down your stuff while you change/wait for others. There are plenty of lockers, large and small, for you to put all of your stuff into with a personalized lock code. Normally I don't like to shower at studios, but these showers at Back Bay are so nice! Anyway, aside from the ridiculous workout which will work you til you think you might pass out, this is a studio location where I would be comfortable taking my time getting ready post-workout. Favorite boston Barry's. The staff is the friendliest and warm and encouraging. Locker rooms...nice. can't stand people on their phone face timing in a locker room (hello). Love the soaps and the towels are always freshly clean and warm. Instructors = the very best. I am slowly growing to love running again for the first time in years. This was my first time at Barry's, and I had a wonderful experience! The staff were all super friendly when I was checking in, and the workout was excellent. I am only in town for 2 days. I had always seen Barry's around LA. It was close to my hotel in Back Bay so I decided to give it a try. The class was AMAZING. Kate is awesome and the people around me showed me how to use the treadmill. I hate running but in small intervals it was actually doable. Such a great studio! Instructors are great, weights/treads are wonderful quality, music always helps you run even faster. Smoothies are delicious, the lobby is really modern and nice, and the Oribe products are worth hanging around for afterward in the locker rooms. Always welcoming, and the most motivating workout.
