This is my go-to Barry's location in Manhattan! Always such a killer workout, no matter if it's Total Body, Arms and Abs, Abs and Ass, etc. My fave days are generally the Total Body because they're really effective, versus the other days I find myself so fatigued by the second half of the class that it's hard to lift more weights. It definitely takes 5 or so classes to truly get the hang of Barry's otherwise it can be really challenging as a beginner. Basically you start on the treadmill or weights for about 12-14 mins, switch to the other side, and then repeat. My fave instructors are definitely Paris and Joe A. With Paris, I get in such a good workout because he doesn't include breaks (lol). Joe A is super motivating and I love his music! read more

Great Barry's location - clean facilities, friendly staff, and any shower necessities you need (towel, toiletries, Dyson hairdryer, etc). The lockers may be tricky if it's your first time using one of theirs, so ask a staff for help before locking your stuff unexpectedly! It was my first Barry's class + I did an Arms x Run class. You start on either the floor or treadmill, then you're instructed to swap stations 2xs, so that you do each section twice. You can opt to be on either the floor or treadmill the whole time though. The format of the class takes a second to get used to, since the instructor directs both sections at the same time. I personally think it's easier to be on the treadmill, since you're mostly jogging or doing sprints. If there's one con, I wish there was more space between the lockers inside the women's locker rooms and the vanity area post shower. Definitely a HIIT style class to get used to, but I loved sweating it out! Barry's is unfortunately on the higher price of workout classes ($40), but a standard price for NYC, sadly. I went here for an event. It was my first experience with Barry's we got our confirmation mid week and was prompted to create an account, I did this. The night before I received another confirmation that said I was all set for tomorrow. The thing is when I arrived it appeared as though I didn't have a placement. The class had already begun even though not everyone had been placed who had arrived before class started. I was eventually placed but felt off balance since I didn't get an understanding of how the class worked. After moving through the first couple of minutes I got the hang of it. I definitely would say this is a more intermediate level fitness class, but you can tone it down by going for lighter weights and running to what you're capable of. read more

I went to Barry's Park Avenue South (Nomad) for a Saturday 12:50pm class, as all the morning classes on ClassPass were full. When I walked in, this class was also completely full (looked like ~50 spots between treads and floor). It was a very sweaty and exhausting 50 minutes, but such a great workout! For the standard Run X Lift Total Body class, you alternate twice between treadmill running and HIIT floor exercises. The instructions can be a little confusing the first time, as the instructor is explaining to the treads and floors simultaneously. You get used to it after a few sessions. The music was upbeat, and the class had such good energy to keep you going. Josiah M. was a great instructor - positive, encouraging, and provided clear instruction. Compared to other Barry's locations I've been to, this one was spacious and well-ventilated, which I appreciated. If it weren't so pricey ($40/class), I would probably come more often. They do have a NYC first-timer special of 3 classes for $60. read more

Recently in New York for work, I realized that this BB location was super close to the hotel I was staying at... I added myself to the waitlist for Mike E's 7:10am lower focus class on a Tuesday am the night before and got the notification that I was on the list at midnight... I was hesitant to go as I had little sleep on top of the time difference (it was 5:10am in Phoenix when I went), but it was a solid workout and energized me for the day ahead... I actually liked that class so much that I signed up for a class the next morning as well! The next class I took was taught by Alycia S and it was chest, back and abs focused. It was also a great class. I started on the floor for both, which was just fine. The only reason for four stars instead of five is that the studio set-up is a bit tight and when you are walking back and forth to get your weights, it's a bit chaotic. In addition, the folks at the fuel bar are not the friendliest (but they do make a mean smoothie)! Lastly, it's pretty damn pricey at $38 a class! Still worth the splurge for a kick-ass workout! Long review short, I'm a huge Barry's Bootcamp fan and am still really hoping that they open one in Phoenix and/or Scottsdale soon! read more

One of my go to workout classes in the city! Super intense and a killer workout. I've tried all but one type of classes here and Tuesday full body - lower focus days are my favorite. I don't enjoy the Total Body days as much as I don't find them to be as challenging. The instructors are good at hyping you up and motivating you throughout the workout. They demonstrate most floor exercises which I find helpful. I'm usually satisfied with the music played during the workout but that varies depending on instructor. Staff members at the front desk are nice and the check in process is fast and seamless. They have hand sanitizer and wipes in the red room if you want to wipe down the equipment before using. read more

If you have $40 to spare and hate even the idea of strength training, you might want to try out a class at Barry's. The friendly instructors at the Park Ave South location have helped me immensely over the past year in getting from 0 muscle whatsoever to being able to do a pull-up. The classes are 50 mins each, half of it on the treadmill for intervals and half on the floor doing various weight exercises. I regularly go for 10+ mile runs and when I tell you that this class is harder than that, I mean it. When I first came to Barry's, I was incredibly intimidated by all the athletic people around me who could very clearly run faster and lift heavier weights than me. But I quickly realized that there's very little judgment inside the red room--even when the instructors are challenging you to run faster, they often repeat that "fast" is whatever it means to you, for your specific circumstance. I really appreciate that sort of growth mentality; and even though I'm still much weaker than most of my classmates, I can tell that I've become visibly stronger than I was a year ago. The one thing I would improve for at least the PAS location, though, is the square footage of the red room. I often feel as if I might hit someone in front of or behind me when I'm doing the floor workouts, and it feels quite cramped so I'm sometimes scared of doing extremely intensive exercises such as burpees. Other than that, though, I really love the energetic environment at Barry's and can always count on a class to get me motivated for the day ahead. read more

Today was my first time at Barry's and I'll be honest - I was really surprised by my experience. Studio: if you're paying $30+ per class, you expect a pretty nice studio. Most NYC are very clean and the staff is welcoming. The front desk staff here is great, but the woman behind the smoothie bar was super rude. They don't have a water filling station (which is another issue) so you have to refill your water bottle with lukewarm water from the smoothie bar sink. I asked her to fill my bottle before class and she all but rolled her eyes at me. I felt very uncomfortable. After class I was exhausted. A nice cold glass of water would've been so refreshing. But nope, all Barry's has is lukewarm sink water. So I went back to the smoothie bar and the woman said "back again?" in such a sassy tone. Is it that strange to fill a bottle of water twice at a workout studio?! Really turned me off of the whole experience. Instructor: I told the instructor that it was my first time at Barry's, and he was very nice, however, I found the class pretty hard to follow. It seems that Barry's really favors the diehard fans and kind of forgets about the newbies. Overall I'd go back because it was a good workout but I'd only go through classpass and could never see myself paying for a class there! read more

I've been to two classes at Barrys (Abs, Butts & Legs). I really enjoyed the classes here and the instructors are really friendly and motivating!!! The running part of the trendmill never gets any easier for me, especially the incline!! Every time I leave here I feel like I really worked out. It's basically a combo of running on the trendmills and then floor work (exercises with weights and the bands). The second time I came here I had not gone to the gym in over 3months and was practically dying. Praying to Jesus to just let me survive the hour. I've been to tonehouse as well and it's a diff workout because it's more a team effort. This is individually focus. There's lockers to store your stuff while you're in class! I did not enjoy this class. Nothing inside was sterilised, there were stains on my treadmill proving it was not wiped off. Did they forget COVID exists? Also, I couldn't understand a word the trainer said. The music was so loud all I heard from him was xxxxxxxxxxx, I heard his voice but couldn't understand a word. I just followed along to everyone else and watched them. Also, he was not correcting anyone's terrible bad form. No your butt should not be up in the air for a plank, but he never corrected anyone. Same for deadlifts, most backs were not straight at all. Shame because people can hurt themselves then if not taught proper form. Never will go back, I mean it's useless to be if the instructor is not understood with such loud music. I'll stick with Mike high run club and tone house. read more

A great place!! I did the Butt and Legs workout through classpass and it was such a great workout. I was terrified to take it because I loathe running but it truly is a workout that is tailored to you. You can run as fast as you want to and do as many or as little squats as you want but they do try to push you. So you're always being challenged in the class. At least for me, it helps that everyone around me was beautiful and fit and working out like crazy! The lockers were really nice and clean with beautiful showers and oribe products. It was not crowded at all after the workout, I was the only one showering afterwards. Compared to OTF, I think the classes are pretty comparable. However, Barry's is the place to go if you're looking for a high quality workout with a very challenging motivating environment. If you can afford it, I highly recommend it! read more

Signed up for Barry's on classpass (16 credits, oh my!) and was curious to finally try this out. I'm from LA so people have been doing Barry's for years; I've only recently gotten into these HITT type classes, so makes sense to try one of the originals. I know this is NYC, but classes here are wildly expensive. IDK how people afford this! Ok, maybe a few times/month, but then how are you even seeing results. But I digress. The studio itself is sleek and fancy. Oribe bathroom products, FTW! The front desk person was nice enough, though i got a vibe that the guy didn't think i was going to be able to do this class (#attack). Our instructor was nice and called us newbies in early to explain how it all works. Unlike other classes i've been to like this, you basically do 4 rounds. 1 on the treadmill, then to the floor for weights, and treadmill then weights again. It's nice because it break it up for you, but is also a bit chaotic. The instructor is also yelling instructions to both the floor and then treadmill people at the same time, so you gotta stay focused! (I'm sure this gets easier as you get more familiar with the classes.) I did miss a sprinting event because i didnt hear her say to start. Our class was arms/abs, and to be completely honest, it just wasn't that difficult. Other abs classes ive gone to, my abs feel it for days. Maybe they just dont stay in exercises for long enough. Also, the running was on the treadmill at 0 percent (which is essentially running downhill- or at the very least, completely flat), which just wasn't that hard. You also get a lot of walking breaks, which obviously i loved in the moment, but i wasn't out of breath after class which is weird for me. I'm glad i tried Barry's, but i think you are paying a lot for the branding, they fill the classes to the brim, and i dont think i once saw the instructor give personal feedback to anyone on their form or whatever. If i can find a cheap classpass I may go back, but will probably stick to the less trendy studios. read more

I've always been curious as to what the hype was about. When there was an opportunity to do a class as part of a corporate event with my company, I was really excited. I'm just glad that I tried it with my company and not on my own because it wouldn't been not worth it. As you will see in the next section, my praises are all related to the treadmill portion and my criticisms are all related to the floor portion. Pros: - The Woodway treadmills are amazing; they feel very sturdy and doesn't hurt your joints. - The running portion was really great; it was almost like Mile High Run Club where you're doing intervals on the treadmill. Personally, I love sprinting but I find it hard to push myself, so it was nice to have someone tell you how fast to run and when to run. It takes the thinking out of it and you're just focused on running to the music, which brings me to my next point. - Good playlist, which is always appreciated. Cons: - No form correction - You only have as much space as a bench and the floor space that's as big as the size of a bench beside it. I was constantly trying to not bump into people. - THE EXERCISES WERE SO BORING!!!!! I understand that it's supposed to be a workout but there are other places where you get a good workout and you have fun at the same time. Due to the lack of space / equipment (only dumbbells and maybe resistance bands), there is not a huge variety of exercises. This is made worse by the fact that they only focus on one body part per day, so it ends up being mind-numbingly repetitive. I liked the squats the first 50 times but after that I was just watching the clock hoping for the class to end. - Based on the way they split up the body parts and the exercises, Barry's seems to be focused on aesthetics instead of functional strength, which is not my cup of tea. Verdict: I would go again if it was free, but I wouldn't even go if it was 9 credits ($15) on Classpass and I most definitely wouldn't pay full price for it. read more

The quality of the classes really depends on the instructor that you get, so my review is more towards the general staff and the facilities. First time at this location and my first impression is great. During the class switch over times (usually every other hour or half hour), this place gets a bit chaotic with people checking in, coming out of the class, lounging, etc. Since it was my first time at the gym, the staff did quickly check me in and make me fill out some forms. It was relatively painless and the staff was nice enough to point out the entire facility... which like other Barry's... consist of one large classroom, a juice bar, locker area, and the separate gender locker room. Compared to the UES location, this location is smaller. The locker area was in the hallway and locker room are very cramped. You are literally changing on top of other people... What is interesting is that they have a fairly large lounging area with about 5 sets of table. So you can definitely have a seat while you drink your smoothie. The class itself was large and probably will fit 50 people easily. The set up is a L shape, so you might actually end up on the bend -- which will put you away from the other people. (if watching other work you up and this matters). Overall the facility is clean and well kept. The lockers have self locks that you set your own code which is a nice add. Great staff, clean facility = positive space. read more

It's all about who you take the class with. The concept of Barry's is great. Running intervals with weights on the floor. So far, I've taken 6 classes at the Park avenue location and I noticed that the instructor does matter. I've taken classes with Alycia ( three times ), Sarah O, Ashley and Kara. I always use my heart monitor with my Garmin watch to track exact calories burned. Here is my ranking of the teachers and details about each class: 1- Alycia : Hands down the best not only the way she teaches, her music, her attitude and energy but also the overall calories burned and the intensity of the classes. Average calories burned in her class : 869 2- Ashley: Great teacher, super nice, even brought me heavier weights when I realized my weights were too light during the floor workout, great music. Demos every move in detail. Calories burned in her class : 836 3- Kara: Just took a class with her this morning. She is nice, had just run the marathon couple days ago so couldn't demo the moves with weights and bands on the floor. Music was okayish ( could be a lot better ) and intensity of the class was average. Her intervals on the treadmill weren't nearly as hard as in the other classes and it showed in my total calorie burn of only 729!!! 4- Sarah O: I rank Sara last because her class lacks energy and intensity. Her music isn't fun and upbeat and she is just not as nice as the other instructors. Also, when running on the treadmill she doesn't count you down for the next interval so you sometimes get confused about whether she's talking to the "treads" or people on the floor. Like any other Barry's location. I don't mind the workout. I like it; and I like the general idea and structure behind it, but the total lack of focus on form is one thing I can't get over. Maybe it is one of the best workouts in the world, but without attention on proper form much of the sweaty effort is wasted, or worse, may contribute to an injury. The benches are so close to each other, and the dimly lit studio simply is not conducive to instructors paying attention to each client, let alone coming around and making personal adjustments. Granted, this location (and probably all others) is better designed than the one in Tribeca, but once you're there it doesn't really feel different no matter which studio you're at. Same lack of warmup (and it really irks me especially when I'm starting on the treadmill, which most people seem to do) means you should get some stretches done on your own before class, likely outside the studio since normally they don't let you in until just a couple of minutes beforehand. read more

I've been going to this location ever since they opened, to Ben's classes in particular. I find his classes challenging and fun. He is always motivating and helps you push your limits. I also feel like he is one of the only instructors that can watch your form when there are over 50 people on the class. I went to his classes even when till the last day of pregnancy and was able to do double floor and both be challenged and feel safe through my workout. I find other instructors good, but he is a true asset and one of the best trainers I've taken in NY. Facility is always clean. Love the smoothie bar and various shakes especially Matcha. Front desk is usually very nice, except for Travis. He somehow thinks the can be rude, obnoxious and yell at people. He really needs to be re-introduced simple customer service skills or maybe just people skills. There are definitely better ways to explain policies without making anyone feel like it's a favor working out @ Barry's. If I wouldn't look forward to my Saturday Bens class I would never even consider coming back! read more

This class definitely lived up to the hype. I signed up through ClassPass so it was such a challenge to finally book a spot, but the wait was worth it! I arrived just as the class started, but the front desk people were so nice and accommodating - showed me where the lockers are and walked me into class to get me started while the class was already under way. The class itself is structured as treadmill, floor work, treadmill, floor work, but you can also opt for a double floor class which I may do next time. Everyone is super focused on their own forms, so it was a great environment to push yourself in, but I wish the instructor corrected more on form since I was lost on some of the exercises. Still an amazing workout - so sore the next day... The locker rooms were stocked with Oribe products and was not that crowded after the class. Lockers had automatic locks so you don't have to bother bringing your own lock. I was excited to try out the fuel bar after class, but it was closed after my class unfortunately. This may be because I took the 2pm class on Sunday which was the last class of the day. read more

I iinitially gave this place 5 stars but I have to knock it down to 3 for two reasons: 1) After going to Barry's for awhile I started to realize the workouts really aren't as well-designed as they could be. The way they train specific muscle groups on specific days is annoying because it makes it trickier to get a balanced week in if your work and other commitments aren't exacly the same every day. (Versus having every day be full-body which I'd prefer.) Also, they only have you grab one set of dumbells at a time for several different exercises. I often guess wrong and find it's either too easy or so hard that I can't even do the exercise, but since you only do each thing for about 30 seconds-1 minute at a time, if I were to go swap out my weights the exercise would be over. 2) They've had facilites problems recently and I'm not impressed with the way they've handled that. Specifically, they have not had hot water the past 3 times I've been there. They have notified us only by having signs posted at the front desk and in the locker room. For an expensive place like this, I would expect them to send out texts to everyone registered for the class an hour or two before (they have our phone numbers), apologize and offer the option of a no-penalty cancellation because, you know, after a sweaty gym class some people need to shower before work! Or, if they truly just found out a few minutes before the class, at least apologize and offer something to thank us for our patience like a coupon for a free smoothie or something. I think this is clear but just in case: I'm not blaming them for the water being out; I'm blaming them for the way they've handled the situation from a customer service perspective. Still giving 3 stars instead of less because the workouts aren't BAD, the facilites are pretty good when they're working, and I do like their pre-order smoothie system. But, I'm switching to another workout near my office for now. No telling whether they'll have better customer service when something inevitably goes wrong, but at least in the meantime I'll be able to shower before work. read more

One of my favorite workouts. Love the fast combo of running and lifting, both things I hate doing on my own. Most instructors are awesome, very motivating with great music. One gripe is that most will not actively correct your form while you are being asked to lift HEAVY weights. I think this is important, given the variety of levels of training in the room. Oribe products in the showers and the BEST water pressure in the showers of any gym (equinox, soul cycle, peloton, etc.), rivaled only by Tonehouse lol. Last Friday I was supposed to take 5:30pm class with my friend as her guest and I have confirmation via email confirming my reservation. I see endless patients at NYU Cancer Center all day and I knew I might arrive close to the start of class AND my friend told everyone at front desk that I'm running late. It turned out I made it 5:25pm but 3 people were already in front of me needing to check in. By the time they tried to check me in - they told me they gave my spot away to someone else on standby or on wait list. BUT my friend told them that I might be running late and they said they will make sure I get in and to not be worried. I was turned away, and discouraged me from ever coming back in the future. read more

Go to Barry's. You want amazing music and a competitive environment? Go to Barry's. I can't say enough about the workout. It works. Full stop. With respect to its Park Avenue South location, Barry's Bootcamp has done it again. The studio is only a year old and somehow still manages to be the 'Cheers' of Barry's locations, where everybody knows your name and the front desk employees all greet you with big smiles regardless of whether it's your first time at the studio or you're a regular. And while Barry's draws you in with its workout, it's an added touch at PAS to feel like you're among friends. read more

First off...I want to say I actually LOVED Barry's prior to my experiences in NYC. I moved from SF where I have had incredible experiences from each and every instructor. I have taken classes in London, Irvine, Miami and Chicago and my experiences were just as phenomenal with the instructors. I was very much looking forward to experiencing the same in these NYC locations but I have yet to experience it. Took a class with Dan in Noho and it was just a very un-motivating class; moves were very repetitive and overall boring? If I am paying $30+ for someone to yell at me and motivate me; I expect them to do so! Keoni....I know he is supposed to be a lead trainer or whatever but wow was he rude with just an overall smug attitude. I was in the row in front of the mirror and had my weights right in front of the mirror (against the wall) where literally NO ONE would be affected by it because I was in the corner. I was still getting situated with my bench/water bottle/etc (this was literally the beginning of class with warm ups barely beginning). He walks on by my bench and says "I SAID WEIGHTS IN FRONT OF THE BENCH" and proceeded to kick my weights away from the wall and towards me as I was tying my shoe. I mean this occurred back in October and I am still upset enough about it to post a review now. I have ever encountered by an instructor in a fitness class. Also in both studios- it was SO hard to hear the instructors. I don't know if it's that they need to make the mike louder? Or if the need to stop mumbling? It was just very difficult to hear and I know others around me were also looking around wondering what to do next. I guess I just miss my SF trainers, I have been spoiled by some genuine, motivating instructors and was hoping for the same in NY. I still have a few prepaid classes I need to use so I will check out a few more but I'm not that hopeful. There are just so many other gyms in NY that this is no longer worth it. I'll still continue to take classes in other cities when I travel though. read more

There was a man doing construction in the ladies locker/changing room today. It was my first time here at this location and I had to walk in and out of the ladies room to check if I was actually in the right room due to my disbelief that he was next to the lockers where women are supposed to change. I didn't get any heads up from the front desk about this and had to ask a girl in the locker room if it was an unisex locker area. She told me no, this was the ladies room. I was late to class because of this as I had to run to the bathroom to change, which had no hooks to hold your things. I'm not sure why didn't the construction man come in to fix the showers when class was in session instead. This made it inconvenient for me and other girls trying to get ready 5-10 mins before class was going to start. The music wasn't that great in my class - it was a lot of house music (not much pop or EDM) therefore, it was hard for me to actually sprint. I usually get in the mood if music has hard drops and run fast. At the end of the class, we had to walk and jog on the treadmill using the dynamic mode. The dynamic mode was not working on my treadmill at ALL. The kind girl next to me tried to help me but it still didn't work. So I had to hop onto the treadmill to my right, which was thankfully empty. Overall, I think I'll skip the convenience of coming here as the location was close to work. I prefer the NoHo location better. To be fair, the Park Avenue location is newly open so I'm sure they will try to improve overtime. read more

Class was great! Honestly exactly what you'd expect from a boot camp class in a large, clean space and not bumping into anyone else! Good music and good workout. Will def be back.. but mainly because of how well they treated me LOL I accidentally went to the Chelsea location (rough day) and was 15mins late coming into PAS. I was frantic, but wish I'd gotten the staff at the front desks' names! I can't stress how much I love their classes here. I've been taking the 12:30 pm class every weekday since it's so convenient (I work across the street). Mikey is so nice and always says hello. Front desk is always saying hello and smiles when you come in. They started to just tell me my spot number since they know I regularly come (just makes you feel they're not just there as check-in). The classes themselves are great. They really help you lose weight and fat. It's really intense and not for the weak-hearted. Once you get over that curve though, you'll start feeling like a different person. My favorite instructors would be Matt, Lindsey, AJ, Charlie, Amanda and Alycia. Very encouraging instructors who really make sure you're pushing yourself to new limits EVERYTIME you come to the red room. read more

Incredible workout!!! So challenging yet makes you feel so great and strong!!!! I didn't think I could go as hard as they encourage but you'd be surprised. There is a great atmosphere and wonderful location and facilities. 10/10 recommend and hope to come back! Only down side is $$$$ but it's pretty average for a NYC class. read more

As a fitness professional now in my last half of life, so much to critique here when u r paying close to $40 a class. First of all instructors are so ego driven & full of themselves that they pay zero attention to class members never correcting form, improper use or a clearly struggling participant. It is very disturbing to watch!! Then other things off the top of my head is the excessive amount of repetitions done, the clear lack of creativity, & the very troublesome downtime in class where the instructor shows students what to do after each segment on the floor and it is so rudimentary.... first of all I don't need to pay $40 to do some standing bicep curls. Workout was good but not GREAT. The staff was pretty pretentious. I personally don't like that they make a different body part for each day of the week because it makes it less accessible for everyone (I went to a full body). It's hard not to compare this to OTF - I feel I get more bang for my buck at OTF because they have rowing machines, TRX ropes, etc. At Barry's, I just went on the treadmill and then weight and abs on the floor. read more
