Before Barry's became a global fitness cult, it was, for me, a specific downtown New York initiation. Tribeca at One York was my first doorway in, delayed by Hurricane Sandy, and walking into that studio felt like the beginning of something. I'm pretty sure my first class was with Rebecca Kennedy, and I left blown away, humbled, and very close to throwing up. Barry's earns its reputation the hard way: inside the Red Room, the workout becomes a negotiation with your lungs, legs, and pride. It is still brutal, and it takes commitment, usually several classes close together, before you feel even halfway decent in there. Life and budget have kept me away for 18 months, so if I walked into class tomorrow, I know exactly how humbled I would be. The work is punishing, intentional, and never cruel. The running has always set Barry's apart: Woodway treadmills made it smoother, sharper, and more athletic than anything else I was doing. I still remember Rebecca using "treaders," a funny little word that later disappeared from the instructor lexicon and somehow still makes me nostalgic. My favorite class was Butt and Legs; I'm sure Abs and Ass has a smart rationale, but that old format had magic: visible results, better running, real strength, and a more athletic body. Noho took what hooked me at Tribeca and showed where the brand was going. The studio was larger, the floor plan was better, and the experience felt like the prototype for how Barry's could scale while keeping its heat. It felt perfectly appropriate that Barry's Noho sat across from Indochine, as if downtown glamour, discipline, sweat, and scene had agreed to share the same block. Tribeca gave me the origin story; Noho gave me the blueprint. Barry Jay once said something close to this: Barry's was like a nightclub without the drugs, alcohol, and traps that can come with those environments. That has always felt right to me: the dark room, the music, the bodies, and the energy dialed up and down like treadmill speed. Barry's carried me through marathon training, brutal work seasons, and bosses I will be diplomatic about here. More than once, it helped me keep getting up and keep going when life made that incredibly difficult. Some mornings, the Red Room did more for my sanity than coffee, a calendar full of high profile meetings, or a well meaning pep talk ever could. I would run, lift, sweat through all of my clothes, and walk back into the city feeling more like myself. Watching the brand grow has been its own pleasure: Barry's retained instructor quality across markets, turned front desk talent into coaches, earned recognition in smaller cities, and moved its merch upmarket. I worked uptown around the investment circles that eventually backed Barry's, and I remember seeing the pitch book before North Castle's investment. Barry Jay's class at Tribeca, and the original West Hollywood studio with beige linoleum tile and tiny beige lockers, reminded me that the workout built the brand before the brand became glossy. This location is on the smaller end. Since the Men/Women showers are downstairs, it gets quite stuffy inside the downstairs lockers. The ventilation is poor and they have fans going in the Women's. While they have all the toiletries you'd need, there are only 3 showers. So expect to wait for one if it's a packed class. The hair dryers kept automatically stopping every ~5 min bc the power strip kept turning off for some reason, which was a bit annoying. The shower/locker area gets packed quick when there are lots of ppl inside. The Red Room is also a bit on the smaller side. All the lighter weights are in a back sliver of the room, so I'd recommend to book a spot away from the corners of the room, unless you don't mind crowds by your spot after each circuit. Overall, like many folks have said, I've been to nicer, larger Barry's locations. Their Chelsea location is my favorite of the few I've been to. read more

Out of the 3-4 Barry's studios I've taken classes at, this location is easily my favorite! Facilities are clean and well stocked with amenities for classes, and the energy is always high. Instructors are enthusiastic, play great music, and always helpful and kind. I think one of my favorite aspects of the studio is the people that typically attend morning classes. You'll find lots of inspiration from people of all ages that are going absolutely crazy on the treadmill and lifting weights, but don't let that discourage you if you were beginner, because this is where I took my first Barry's class and was instantly hooked. Taking classes here helped me further develop my love of running and improve my health. I saw results within two weeks, which was so exciting! I loveeee the locker rooms downstairs and showers as they have the best amenities here and are great to get ready for work in. The shakes offered upstairs are also always filling and delicious. In all fairness this is the first and only Barry's I've ever been to, but I have no complaints about this studio! The locker room is clean and had all amenities I needed (note that I didn't shower here, but do use the lockers, bathroom and soaps/lotions). The only "issue" I had was floor spot 2 is literally right next to the door and I had to move a few times to let in late comers which was a little annoying but I now know not to book that spot again. Instructors have been great, front desk staff is friendly and was helpful to walk me through the class on my first day. Can't wait to come back! read more

The workout is good, but after a few tries you can replicate 80% at your own gym. It's a fairly simple treadmill and weight bootcamp. Be careful about your spot. If you get a bench on the end you'll have no room. Two of the benches are literally against the wall so no room for chest presses or other moves that require you to lay on your bench. The showers never get above lukewarm and the door to the women's locker room is in full view of women changing so you have to change in a corner for privacy from people in the hall. Also if you get there between 5 min and start time, they can bump you to either a worse spot or completely. read more

Finally tried Barry's Bootcamp about 5 years after everyone else. To give context for comparison, I generally work out at SoulCycle and Rumble Boxing once or twice a week, and at Equinox. I was on a vacation (staycation) from work and saw a promotion (3 classes for $70 for first timer), so I figured why not. First time experience - the entire studio of Barry's Bootcamp Tribeca was incredibly welcoming for me as a first timer. I don't know what the other reviews are talking about. The front desk greeted me and explained where everything was. The shake bar filled up my reusable water bottle no problem, and asked me how my first time was after the class. Instructor - Kat was sooo awesome. I highly recommend her class. This was the only group fitness class that I've ever been to, where the instructor came over to me on my first time and explained how everything worked. She also gave personal attention and feedback on form during the work out, and asked how I felt after class. Work out - I went on Chest, Back and Abs day.. this workout was tough (in a good way)! It has been years since I've worked out my chest muscles to failure where I couldn't even do a push up, but by the end of the class I couldn't even do a push up. I felt good muscle soreness (the kind that leads to growth) for 3 days after the class. Studio - There are only 2 showers in the Men's locker room. There are 38 spots in the class. I live 3 subway stops away from this location. This is the main reason I probably won't become a regular at Barry's Bootcamp Tribeca. I sweated a ridiculous amount in this class, to the point where I wouldn't feel comfortable leaving the building without a shower. I was able to get one, but I went on off hours (Wednesday 10:45am) because I was on vacation from work. Overall, I really liked my experience at Barry's Bootcamp. The number one reason I would be back would be to take more of Kat's classes, and the friendly staff. The smoothie after class was also very welcome and delicious (I got Chocolate Peanut Butter with egg white protein - no dairy). The only thing holding me back is the lack of showers. It's hard to choose to wait in line for shower, when other classes in the $36 per class price range have 4-6 showers with no wait. However, if you live within walking distance, it's a no brainer, this is a great studio. I will be back (definitely to use my remaining 2 classes), and maybe occasionally after that when I'm free on off peak hours. read more

Probably one of my lesser favorite locations in the city. The layout is very cramped, no surprise as this is NYC, it it seemed excessively so. The red room itself was also by far the smallest studio I've experienced as well. Obviously, these things have no impact on the workout which is what matters! Checking in was easy enough and I found a panel of lockers on the lobby floor to put my stuff. We went in and our trainer proved to be dedicated, tough, and very clear about instructions and form. It was definitely one of the tougher workouts, it was arms and abs day (smaller muscle groups = less calories burned) but I ended up burning more than I do in a total body workout. I took a quick shower afterwards, and while the locker room is absolutely tiny and the showers were dated, all the amenities were there as usual. Will probably continue to go to my regular locations, but I'm glad I've finally visited every Barry's in NYC! read more

Workout - Grueling. I left limping and half dead (lower body focus day). It's mixture of running on the treadmill and free weights on the floor. If running isn't your thing, I recommend opting for "double floor" (FYI not an option on ClassPass). Facilities - One of the smaller studios in the city as it feels a bit cramped, everything from the studio to the lobby to the locker room. The men's locker room has two showers and two toilet stalls, but this isn't too much of an issue in the evening because I think this Barry's is more of a neighborhood gym as I saw people going home to shower. Based on the price point ($36/class), I expected higher quality products in locker room, at least that's the standard at other high-end fitness studios in the city. There is smoothie bar so you can per-order your post-workout smoothie, so that's a plus. Overall, I had a good experience and will be back. read more

Tough and impressive workouts - I really like the concept of the even balance between cardio and weight training. Most classes circuit between treadmill and a station with mat for weight/body movements several times. The movement between stations is a bit hectic, so it can be a bit hard keeping up with the instructor or making sure you are on point with the exercises, especially when you are new. Workouts are intense and exhausting with encouraging instructors. Despite their name, there's no drill sergeant vibe here - it's an enthusiastic and welcoming vibe. This location has a bar where you can pre-order a post-workout smoothie, which are expensive but quite good. The locker/showers are quite nice as well. The cardio portion unfortunately is running on a treadmill in all Barry's classes. The equipment is incredibly modern and comfortable (tread/track style treadmill) but, Barry's protestations to the contrary, it is still running, and I do wish it were a different cardio component. So if running isn't your thing, I'd recommend it sporadically rather than as a regular class, which is how I approach it. read more

Barry's is indeed the world's best workout as their claim goes. But only if you enjoy cardio and military style training in a dark nightclub-like setting with loud music playing, with a room full of fitness maniacs who go to great extremes to stay in shape, not to mention pay $30 each for an intense fifty-minute workout that is as much a fitness regimen as it is a humbling experience for the likes of me. Now I belong to the camp that likes my food and drink a tad more than running or lifting weights. To boot, I am not good with sprints on the treadmill at 9-10 miles an hour on a 10-15 percent incline. If I was that well endowed physically, I would love to come to Barry's, but then I might not need to. While that bit of skewed reasoning would suggest a limited market potential for a boot camp such as Barry's, clearly there are enough type As in the neighborhood who want to challenge themselves in a peer group setting, and draw inspiration from being pushed to the extreme. I am not sure I will return to Barry's for more punishment, but I would certainly recommend everyone to try the workout at least once. Just make sure to read the disclaimer in small print before taking the plunge. read more

Went to my first class yesterday which was TRX by Omri Rachmut (apparently last TRX class they're offering). The trainer was very knowledgeable and pushed the people in his class. Only initial notice was how he was very dismissive when I came in and asked about where I needed to initially do (go on floor first or treadmill--since I have ClassPass this was my first Barry's class). However, after few minutes in he came back to check on me briefly that helped remediate my initial bad impression. The bathroom/locker room(code activation locker) was awesome (showers were equipped with Malin+Goetz face wash, body wash, body lotion, shampoo, & conditioner) they additionally had q-tips, tampons, & hair dryers for additional supplies for women. One thing I did notice was how Omri demonstrated on most of the exercises but did not correct people on their form as much as I much would've liked him to (assumed that everyone knew what they were doing including adjusting the TRX ropes). Despite that I did enjoy his class and the friendliness of the rest of the staff & fellow workout attendees. I'll probably be back here and check out the other locations for different workout experiences. read more

This is only the second Barry's bootcamp I have ever visited, the first one being the one in San Diego. I'm a big fan of Barry's so I decided to try the New York one out. They have 3 Barry's in NY, so I accidentally bought the wrong pass when I purchased the class online, but they were able to credit me back the class. This Barry's is bigger than the one in San Diego, I think they had at least 17 treadmills and at least 17 weight areas. The place was fairly easy to find in the dark with the GPS on my phone and thanks to the large Barry's bootcamp trainer pictures on the outside of the gym! If you know Barry's, it's all about dark room with red lighting, club music, and spending half the class on the treadmill and half the class on weights. Natalie was the instructor for arms and abs class, and she was great! She was motivating and instructional and a real sweetheart. Everyone in class was really nice also, letting me know I was reaching for the wrong bands. We split our time into 3x on the treadmill, and 3x with weights. I was definitely sore after the class, and that is how I judge a class! I will say thought, the $34 drop in fee is quite steep. I wouldn't feel comfortable doing too many drop ins here, and seeing as I don't actually live in New York, I wouldn't buy the bigger class passes. read more

I missed the cut for my 2012 beach bod, but that won't stop me from starting now for 2013. I have a gym in my building, but i needed something to KICK me into start-up mode. Welcome Barry... Barry and his Bootcamp are kicking my.. &;)$ back into shape like its 2006. Each day is devoted to specific muscle groups, with full body sessions on the weekend. Classes are intense, hot and calorie burning (says my HR monitor), and lactic acid accumulation makes me cry for days. Most importantly, classes are FUN and I never dread my return. The locker room and showers are totally clean, and the studio provides towels too. Class schedule is online. Kudos to Barry's IT staff, because it's simple, easy and computer friendly to sign up for class online. 2013, here I come. read more

I came to this location the other day and I was underwhelmed with the facilities and the workout itself. I haven't been to a Barry's class in quite a while but knew what I was getting myself in for in terms of a workout. The women's locker room was down the stairs on the basement level, and had a very cramped and dungeon feeling to it. Also, one of the showers was out of service and the whole locker room just didn't feel very conducive to being a place you would want to shower in/get ready in mainly because there was no space to move around in. The workout was average--half the class on the treadmill and half the class doing floor exercises with free weights and while it was a good workout, I thought the instructor was lacking in coming around. The music choices were good and the instructor was upbeat enough, but the workout itself was nothing special. Also the floor to do the exercises on was pretty grimy, and while I recognize lots of people come in to do Barry's, I would have not expected the floor to be so gross feeling. I might try a different location the next time if I am in the mood to do a Barry's type class. read more

This is a great workout. I've only been to two classes with Courtney and Josh. Over a 50 minute period, you either start out on the treadmill or on the floor with dumbbells or medicine balls. On the treadmill, the workout consists of intervals (sprints for 30 seconds - 1 minute) and typically, the instructor gives you a range to work with (6.0 mph - 9mph). That way, if you have an injury, like I did the first time, you can still push yourself, but work on the lower end of the range to work out safely. Then you switch to the floor (or vice versa) and do a range of exercises with free weights (lunges, jump squats, push ups, planks -- anything, you name it). Depending upon the class, you focus on different body parts. I took Chest, Back, & Abs with Courtney and that was a really tough class, but that's where I am weakest. Courtney was great, but we didn't stretch as much in the end. Josh taught the Total Body class, and that targeted all the muscle groups, and we stretched a lot more at the end. After that, you switch back to the treadmill (or vice versa) for a total of 2-3x. The running part is not as tough for me because I regularly run and train for races. Knowing that, I will try to push myself during the sprints, etc. But the weight training is really eye opening and challenging for me. A common comment I saw below is that there is not much individual attention on the floor, which is true, and which is why I subtracted 1 star. Unless you go to a less crowded class (say on Sunday evening), then there's the opportunity to get more attention from the trainer. Facilities: The locker rooms are downstairs, and are very clean. There are 3 showers, with lukewarm water - I don't know if it's a policy of theirs or there was just no hot water yesterday, but I'm in and I'm out. Lockers have a digital keypad, so you don't need to bring a lock of your own. They have ample towels. Bring your own water, unless you want to shell out $3 for a bottle. They also have a "FuelBar" with smoothies and such, but I have not checked that out. Overall, pricey per class, but a great workout, and I like mixing this in with other workouts that I am a fan of (Exhale, Physique 57, Brooklyn Bridge Boot Camp, etc.) read more

I've taken classes in Chelsea and in Boston but I didn't find them as challenging (of course also depends on the instructor) Either two or three sets (totalling around 30 minutes) of cardio on the treadmill then 30 minutes of strength training on the floor or with the TRX (if you're taking that class). The trainers are hard asses. They really push you and yell at you to motivate you. The atmosphere is great. The room is spacious and dim- lit red lighst. Almost gives a feeling of an underground club- makes me feel really bad ass. The studio is great, and professional. The bathrooms and locker rooms are very clean. There are plenty of showers, sinks and lockers so there's never a wait for anything. I highly recommend the TRX for an extra challenge. You feel the burn deep! Try it out. I think everyone ought to do the full Barry's experience with both floor and treadmill work. Hurts oh so good. REMEMBER TO PACE YOURSELF. You are pushing yourself to the limit for a little under an hour. Don't give it all away your first round. I've seen people almost faint because they did gave too much too fast. read more

I have been going to Barry's since October. Never had a bad experience, the trainers are always killer and they put you to work. My experience today-We were hit with a MONSOON out of nowhere and I was completely unprepared. I was soaked to the bone before I even got to the top of the subway steps. I used my workout shirt to cover my face/hair as I proceeded to run the 4 blocks showing up drenched. I was greeted with a towel to dry off and a "You made it!". As I ran into the class after changing I asked the front if they had any random t shirts I could use as mine was soaked. They thought for a second and me being the awkward human I am l said never mind, it'll be fine! And ran into the class. 5 minutes later one of the front desk guys (I wish I knew your name!) came in and handed me a dry Barry's shirt t shirt! I am eternally grateful because working out in a soaking tee is disgusting haha. I wasn't expecting it but I certainly appreciate y'all taking care of a dedicated customer read more

The classes here are actually quite good. I've taken several early morning ones and am always impressed by the instructors' ability to teach HIIT two classes at one time. The room where classes are held is likewise fine: the treadmills are great, and it's actually not too hard to watch the instructor demonstrate thanks to mirrors and the fact that it's a long narrow space. While there are a couple of log jams to/from the weights during changeovers, it's not terrible. So why two stars? The facilities. I would actually have considered giving them three stars, but so many others have commented on them going back a couple years it's especially disappointing. These are fixable problems. Half the lockers in the women's locker room don't work. There aren't nearly enough showers or enough space for more than 3 women to get dressed at a time. The peg for towels next to one of the showers fell off the wall and has yet to be fixed at least 3 weeks later (leaving the occupant of the shower no choice but to put her towels on the floor...gross). Additionally, I hate to say it but both a coworker and I have had items stolen here. Someone stole my shoes from the locker room while I was in class. Yes...my shoes. Technically my fault for not locking them up I guess but it's a disheartening experience nonetheless. If you live nearby and don't have to use the locker room, you'll be in good shape. Just started going to Barry's and I am LOVING it. The treadmill sprinting intervals add the right amount of intensity to make me really sweat. They need to fix the digital locks in the locker rooms though. About half of the lockers don't work so you end up having to run out to your locker in the hall in a towel. read more

So the name of this place alone scared me! It just sounds like a place where you get your butt kicked! I arrived and was greeted by a lovely man at the front desk who checked me in and directed me to the ladies locker room on the lower level. The locker room is a decent size with 3 showers (1 was out of order), toilet stalls, and lockers with key codes. There is a juice bar on the main level but I didn't bother to check out the menu. Towels are complimentary and Barry's bottled water is $3 which is a little ridiculous as I purchased one from my corner store for $1 (Poland spring). The class wasn't as terrifying as I thought it would be. We started off on a treadmill, increased speed and incline and then went to workout on the floor with dumb bells and resistance bands. There were push ups, squats, crunches, lunges, etc. My only complaint is that the instructor demonstrated the next circuit routine when we were still being timed on the current one. So instead of "staying in the zone" I was interrupted as to what would take place next. Overall is was a good class and I am sure to feel the pain tomorrow morning - partially because I forgot to stretch prior to the class. I shall return! read more

I love Barry's - always a great workout - but this location needs some serious revamping. Both the locker room and the studio were extremely dusty. The locker room needs some upgrades, including new shower rods (very rusty) and curtains (very moldy). Do yourself a favor and head to the Chelsea location which is cleaner / better kept. For all Barry's locations: I wish the front desk workers would be more polite at all locations. The instructors are consistently kind and helpful and the people working the front desk are consistently rude and unhelpful - they always give serious attitude. read more

Love the workouts here. The cardio can get pretty intense, especially the sprints when they ask you to run at a 9, 10 or 11 speed, but it always leaves you feeling exhausted (in a good way) at the end. The floor part will vary depending on the day of the week and on your instructor. Most of the instructors are great at demonstrating proper form for the moves and giving out cues along the way so it's easy to follow. The biggest downside is that the classes are quite expensive but I only come here on Classpass. read more

A few years ago, everyone was obsessed with Barry's Bootcamp mainly attributed to celebrities taking this class. I, too, found myself signing up for the beginner's class because I was interested in burning 500-600 calories and maximizing my time. The instructor told the class to do intervals of cardio comprising of jogging/running sideways on a treadmill for 15-20 minutes as well as doing push-ups, sit-up and weights. I think it was a great workout but just not for me. The facility at the TriBeCa location was super clean - I liked their face cleanser, hand cleanser and body lotion. Fun fact: I found out the coach who taught one of my classes a few years was recently featured on Bravo's workout show (premiered last year?) I don't follow or watch the show. read more

5 stars for the total body, ass-kicking workout led by fantastic instructors with great music (I personally really like Noah and Harley) and gorgeous facility with cafe/juice bar and stocked, comfortable locker room -- 1 star for customer service and overall culture of the Barry's experience. I really wanted to like Barry's, as everyone I know who's done it absolutely raved about the classes and saw great results from attending regularly. Okay, I get it, it's top-notch, trendy and some celebrities like it. So I should be grateful that I'm being permitted to spend my $34/class here, and feel a little excited and star-struck upon walking through the door, right? And should mold my life around following their very strict rules to be permitted to enter after paying and signing up for a class, right? Apparently, they think so. The customer service policies are downright hostile: - First of all, you need to cancel classes 24 hours in advance, no exceptions. One time, I had a medical emergency and called to cancel 7 hours in advance, and was told that I'd need to show a doctor's note next time I came. When I did so, the person I spoke to didn't know what I was talking about (my account wasn't flagged as promised), so I lost the class. Fine, whatever, I injured myself and couldn't have known that would happen within the cancellation window, which is sort of my fault. Right? - Second of all, you must arrive 5 minutes early or else you will lose your spot. I arrived at 1:41pm for a 1:45pm class (after a 40-minute, delay-riddled subway ride from Brooklyn and running through the streets in the rain to get to the studio) and someone from the waitlist had already taken my place -- people were still trickling into class, mind you. I was shocked and flustered, and after some negotiation with the front desk girl, was permitted to return later to a class with an open spot without being docked. Seriously though? 4 minutes early (no, late, huh?) and I was... turned away? I just think if you're going to charge premium prices, you should treat your customers like valued clients, not animals. Disclaimer: In a past life, I had my certification as a group exercise teacher & a personal trainer. Currently, I love CrossFit. Statement: Barry's Bootcamp plays into every insecurity a person has about their body and their fitness level. Easy Answer: The instructor yelled out "Who wants to be skinny?!?!?" as "motivation". More Explanative Answer: Too many people in one class + not enough trainers + advanced exercise moves = Dangerous situations in which people can hurt themselves. Here's why: 1. If the trainer-per-participant ratio is too high, the trainer is forced to split their attention (and their exercise cues) between those participants on the treadmill, and those participants on the floor. This means they are not correcting you on your form, and they are not giving you scaling cues so that you can complete the exercise safely. 2. Advanced exercise moves are not for everybody because we are all, admittedly, at different fitness levels with different capabilities. Not only will you not be able to do these moves, you may hurt yourself trying, and you will feel bad about yourself for not being able to do them. Example: Side Plank + Weighted Ball in the Top Hand + Side Crunch. Another Example: Even some class participants were not doing weighted russian twists correctly. Since (1) is in play, when exercises described in (2) are cued, you're not getting the attention you need to scale these exercises, and to do them while protecting your spine. A hard workout does not have to include difficult to execute exercises. You can get a hard workout doing 4 minutes of air squat intervals. 3. The treadmill portion is awesome, but don't push yourself so much that you fall off the treadmill (I saw one girl close to this). Their cues for how fast you should be running ("sprint in the double digits") are totally unrealistic for non-runners, or short people (like yours truly) ** My balanced summation ** I have friends that love Barry's. It's great for them, and it's a great workout IF you know how to scale exercises yourself. Don't push yourself to do moves that feel uncomfortable, or incorrect. Try modifying the move in some way so that you feel productive w/o hurting yourself. read more

Ugh. I hated it. I had to run a lot, run some more, lift 10lb weights, and jump and stuff. Yea, so a solid workout, but I hated every moment of it. I bought a Gilt City (or one of them) voucher for 3 classes for $50 (maybe -- I have so many "deals", I can't keep track). Either way, I first saw Barry's Bootcamp on Keeping up with the Kardashians and wanted to try it, but the classes at the Chelsea location seem to always be full. When I saw the Gilt City deal for the new Tribeca location, I jumped at the chance. I went to my first class today. Sigh. It was horrible. I hate to run -- HATE to run. There was running -- like a half hour of it in two 15-minute stretches. Somehow I knew this, but it was worse than I expected. The instructor, Amber (I think), tried to push the class up to 10mph. Tried, because I was not having any of that. I did not go above 6.5. I kept up with the class until we had a 7.5mph sprint (3 minutes in) and then after that I was like, "hell nah." I am not trying to die on a treadmill and besides, ::ahem:: I'm getting over a cold. There was lots of sprinting and yelling and stuff going on. The energy was great and the people around me were sweating a lot and really out of breath. Next was the weight training portion of the class. I was sad when we were told to retrieve weights and the smallest I saw was 8 lbs. (I later learned that the 5lb weights are located just around the corner from the weight racks. I will stick to those next time.) Anyhow, so the weight training was the type of stuff that a trainer would require you to do. Stepping up while raising your arms, mountain climbers, pushups, lunges, squats, etc. with weights and variations, combining stuff, you know. This was solid and not nearly as bad as the running. Ugh, then we started running again. With inclines. I strongly preferred this because we didn't go as fast (not that I was keeping up with the class anyway). Next, we got on the floor and did more weight training and closed with an abs series. Overall, it was a great workout. Despite my incessant walking, the treadmill told me I burned 250+ calories. You get a workout similar to that that you would get during a personal training session, but in a class environment with great energy and music bumping thru the speakers (I heard at least 3 Beyonce songs and was very happy). The one drawback, which is kinda major, is that because it's a class, with lots of participants and only one instructor, your form is probably going to suck and no one is going to correct you. Perhaps if you're a regular with the same instructor, they would be in a position to correct you over time. But as I looked thru the class, most everyone was doing each movement differently and I'm sure most of us had it wrong. The whole space was nice, brand new. Everything is clean and with a industrial look. The changing/locker room is well equipped with lots of locker space and individual stalls, showers, etc. Although the whole bootcamp thing is not my forte, but I will strongly consider adding Barry's to my fitness rotation -- 3-4 times a month. Definitely give it a shot. Note: Amber was there when I checked in and overheard my conversation regarding this being my first time. I suspect this helped me keep a low profile and walk vigorously while others were running (thank goodness). read more

Firstly, for people who are scared to take a class at Barry's because they don't think they're fit enough, I'd tell them to shake off that insecurity and just go for it. The beauty in the setup of each class is that while the coach will certainly give you a range to target (either on the treadmill or for floor weights/work) you can always, always adjust to your current level of fitness and push to your personal best. that said, I would rate the overall workout to be roughly a 7/10 in terms of intensity/craziness. After taking ToneHouse, I feel like anything else is a cakewalk by comparison. HOWEVER, that's not to say this isn't a legitimate workout (it most definitely is!), but while I warn people AGAINST taking ToneHouse unless they're really confident in their fitness, I would not necessarily say the same about Barry's. You start either on the floor or on the tread. I personally had wanted to start on the floor but was told by the front desk girl that since the class was small, we were all starting on the treads. OK, no biggie, I'm a runner, I'm down with that. However, when we got to class, people were definitely split between floor and tread, so that's a minor complaint I have overall (there was plenty of room for me to start on the floor if I was adamant about it, but you're assigned a spot in class and I didn't want to potentially displace anyone, so whatever!). I took a Saturday evening Full Body class and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. I'm still recovering from a foot fracture and was able to handle everything the instructor threw at me, including the gnarly 15% incline sprints on the treads (although I did dial it down a little on the speed just to avoid any faceplanting). My training definitely skews heavily towards cardio and less on weights and crosstraining, so I recognize my weakness there. The floor work definitely felt great though, and breaking it up into 2 segments gave me a nice break in between (I found myself looking forward to getting back for part 2 on the tread!). To get the whole Barry's experience I also placed an order for a Skinny PB shake to be prepared and waiting for me post-class. It's really nice to have a nutritious and low calorie / low sugar treat to refuel yourself with right after class, although honestly I didn't/couldn't finish the whole shake. Not because it wasn't tasty, but mostly cuz my body takes awhile to be able to consume food and drink after exercise. It was also slightly pricey, and given the gym's proximity to GNC, I think next time I'll just grab something on my way to the train to eat a little later instead. Still, delicious shake and a nice touch. As others have noted, the shower and locker area is definitely funkytown - not my jam at all, but I'm also spoiled by some of the higher end amenities many studios in the city are now offering. I also scheduled my class so that I could just go home and shower, so luckily I did not have to subject myself to that experience. In the future I'll be planning to shower at the gym near my house as I can see how crowded and crazy it can get here after class. Overall - I highly recommend Barry's to athletes of ALL levels as you can tailor it to your level, but if you can avoid the shower area, maybe coordinate that! Shakes are good but didn't feel like they were worth the sticker price per se given the options nearby. More like 4.5 stars, minus the half star mostly for the funky shower sitch! read more

Work out itself was good, not as challenging as the San Francisco location, but it's ok since I was on vacation and didn't want to work out THAT hard anyways. I thought the staff was a lot friendlier than the Noho location. The building itself is large and looks like it would be hip and modern, but it's not. I agree with all the other reviewers that the facilities are gross. Bathrooms are small and look like they haven't been cleaned in weeks. This was my 3rd Barry's location and I was curious about the Woodway treadmills that they used here. They looked like it was a much older model than the ones I'm used to. There was also crumpled up tissue and garbage behind the treadmills. When I was on the floor doing push-ups, I instantly regretted not grabbing more towels, as my hands were covered in dust and hair left from previous clients. I love you Barry's, but this location needs to be clean, especially for $34 a class! read more

Can you say....ADDICTED?!! First off....yes, there is lots of running and NOT GOING TO LIE...YES, I HATE RUNNING. My first class the instructor said, "Lets do a light jog at 6.5 mph" I instantly thought WTF....LIGHT JOG?? That is a run!! Light jog is 4.2, thank you very much! Well, that was Oct 28 and I can now say that I can easily do a light jog at 6.5 without cursing out my instructors. Noah even kicked my butt up to 10.5 for a 30 or 45 second sprint. (How the hell he managed to sweet talk me into that I'll never know) OH wait...yes...its cuz he's HOT. ALL of the instructors are insanely hot. Sorry, I digress when I think of the hot instructors. ...Back to the actual class. No two classes are alike, and no two instructors are alike. General class structure is 15 min of running. (FYI..I still dread the running but I can do it now) The instructors take you through well timed runs ranging from light jog to "I never knew my legs could move this fast" . My stride and breathing have greatly improved and my body is really starting to take shape again. HELLO BIKINI SEASON..I WILL BE READY FOR YOU THIS YEAR!! Then the next 15 min (or so) is weights. Each day is broken into different body parts with FRI-SUN as full body. (Check out their website) Then it is back to 15 min of the lovely running and back to weights for the last 15. You will burn more calories in this hour than you EVER thought possible and continue to burn them throughout the day. Back to the hottie instructors: I have taken classes with Noah, Natalie, Patrick, Courtney, Matty, Keoni, Joey and Barry. Love them all! Can't get enough of them. Their timing is impeccable...their motivation, creativity and the "believe in yourself" attitude shows through with every instructor. They are constantly monitoring the room and checking your form and telling you chin up (and other running techniques) that are great reminders. The best one is from Noah- "DON'T LISTEN to your mind telling you to quit." AS MINE DOES every time I have to sprint at 10mph... "This is when you body is making changes. You can do it!" and somehow that helps get me through a 10 or 10.5 mph sprint. (30-45 seconds is sprint time) YES...there are power houses doing 12.5 sprints but I am THRILLED that I started as a 100% NON RUNNER and can do a 10 mph sprint. YES- I do have a gym membership at Equinox and THOUGHT I loved them but it is not as motivating and personal as Barry's. NOTE: YES...I am canceling Equinox membership. Thank you, Team BBC, for making me laugh and smile all while kicking my a$$ and making me enjoy it so much that I come back for more. Now the gym facilities: I have been to both Chelsea and Tribeca location. Tribeca has a MUCH larger locker room and bigger lockers. Showers are clean and they have Malin + Goetz products so leave your stuff behind, Ladies and Gentlemen. ONLY negative I can say is the women's locker room shower still do not have hot water. Its now warmish...I swear ALL you have to do Barry's is just get your plumber to fix the shower handle. (It only goes straight up and doesn't turn to hot) The sinks and men's showers (So I am told) have hot water. Hello....no rocket scientist needed to fix this issue!! Almost forgot- They have an app that you can use to sign up for classes (LOVE IT) or via their website. read more

I'm that girl. The girl that is slightly overweight (aren't we all?) and enjoys a workout that kicks her butt because after all, that means I burned calories and I'm gonna lose weight right? Barry's is addictive; the class is a mix of cardio and strength and depending on the instructor, you could do either 2 or 3 sessions on both the floor and treadmill. The treadmill portion is THEE worst; pretty sure I almost fell off the treadmill at one point, but it's awesome. Nice Woodway treadmills where I run backwards, sideways, and sometimes even power OFF the machine and use all of my energy to power the thing.It's an AMAZING workout and at the very least, I leave the class feeling like I'm a BOSS (cue Meek Mill). My favorite instructors include Amber Rees, Lindsay Clayton, and Rebecca Kennedy. I've heard amazing things about Courtney Paul and Layla Luciano, but I've never made it to their classes. Overall, if you have a little loot to spend ($34 a class, goes down slightly if you buy a package), DO IT. BEST FITNESS CLASS EVER. I take one star off due to the locker room. Adequate but SOOOOOOOO small. With only 3 showers (sometimes 2 if one is broken). read more

This location is OK but not the best or preferred imo. For the stations and weights section of the class, I could barely see the instructor and with the music blasting out loud, it was honestly hard to hear her so I just followed the people next to me what they were doing. There was no correction of form whatsoever. It was my first time doing leg resistance band exercises in my life and honestly, there were a bunch of people who were lost and struggling with the bands cause they weren't sure which direction or way to utilize these bands as it was hard to see the instructor and hear her. The structure of the room is MUCH better at Noho (the only other Barry's I've been to.) Be prepared to run a LOT when you are taking these classes. These classes are nothing compared to Mile High Run Club DASH 28 classes (where I've went to first). Running is the hardest part of this class imo as I'm not a great runner in terms of stamina but the weights section of the class is doable for sure. Women's locker room is OK. Several lockers didn't seem to lock.. not sure why. The showers aren't the cleanest and the bathroom/shower area do look dirty :X read more
