Arborist came out within days, on time, and was very professional and knowledgeable about the trees of heaven that were being attacked by lantern flies. This was a one-star review for their online billing which I've now upgraded. I've been a happy customer for many years, until they restructured their online billing service to a system that simply doesn't work. It's really annoying and multiple complaints have no result. If I have to give them a lousy rating on this aspect of an otherwise excellent service, maybe it will get their attention. OK: They now say it's fixed. We paid $975 for a health assessment of our oak trees. The report recommended removing one oak. Their estimate split the charges -- roughly half for the crane and half for cleanup, including chipping, etc. Bartlett promised to bring the crane operator to our property to assess what size crane they would need. They never did; we didn't see anyone at our house, and they hinted they conducted an aerial assessment, which is not an accurate assessment of the job site. We were told that the crane operators that Bartlett contracts out to didn't have the right equipment. Bartlett must have known this based on their health assessment, the oak's size, and its location. Sending an estimate while knowing the limitations of who they contract for crane work is completely unprofessional and misleading. Their removal estimate was a shocking $10,000, while another company that came to our house estimated $4,800, confirming that a crane wouldn't be feasible, however saying with confidence that a large bucket truck could handle it. It's clear Bartlett didn't want to do this job, even though they have their own bucket trucks. After refusing to remove the tree, Bartlett had the audacity to push pruning and treatments for our other oak. Their pruning costs are outrageous -- around $3,000, almost as much as taking down a tree, and treatments can cost up to $1,500. Bartlett is overpriced and more focused on selling fertilization and treatment plans than providing basic tree services at a reasonable price. We also received repeated emails claiming they walked our property to assess trees and shrubs without permission, unless the estimate was based on an aerial view or referencing previous tree treatment work. We have trusted Bartlett for years and are shocked at how the company has declined. A former Bartlett arborist even told us stress on trees is "just weather," not climate change, which is absurd given this area's changing climate zone. Here on out, we will no longer hire Bartlett Tree Experts. Very disappointing. read more

A representative of Bartlett Tree Experts was visiting my neighborhood today to inspect a neighbors trees for an estimate. I am sorry to say that I observed one of them urinating in public across the street from my house. Is that anyway to show respect for the community? I will be advising the potential client of this disgusting behavior and providing him with the name of a competitor, who has always given me first rate service, and ALSO has had the benefit of proper home training. I called the Gaithersburg, MD office and had the misfortune of speaking to an induhvidual named Marguerite. She was extremely rude. Her obvious lack of home training was evidenced by the fact that she repeatedly interrupted me, hung up on me multiple times, and when I called back, she threatened to call the police on me. When I described what I had seen, Marguerite said, "How dare you talk to me like that???" I don't know where the entitled Marguerite pees, but nothing would surprise me. read more

I called Bartlett early one morning after a tree came down in a storm. Michael, one of their arborists, was at our house within the hour to assess the situation and had a proposal to me via email the same day. We agreed to the price and he responded quickly saying that the crew would be at our house to remove the tree within a day or two. Early the next morning he emailed to say the crew would arrive in about an hour and sure enough they were here right on time. They cut up the tree and ground it up within an hour. Then they did a complete cleanup of the remaining debris so that nothing was left behind. It was a very good experience and I am happy we hired them for the job. read more

Response to Bartlett Owner Comment: You stated several inaccuracies in your response. You claim, "the peeled bark in your picture is fresh and occurred when the stem failed or when the contractor made a chainsaw removal cut." That is not the case. The chainsaw simply made the existing split more obvious, exposing the long line of decay behind it. Several tree companies that gave me a fallen tree removal estimate commented that the tree failed due to this internal decay and not because of ground saturation from the rain. In fact, when you diagnosed my tree in 2016 with Phytophthora, the bark was already beginning to peel at the base, and there was a vertical line of decay visible on the trunk. I videotaped your visit in 2016, and the attached photo from from that video shows the decay. You commented, "I am sorry we cannot guarantee against storm damage and unforeseen internal decay." Of course you cannot guarantee those things, but you convinced me you could treat a disease that cannot be treated. Research indicates phytophthora canker cannot be treated. Furthermore, the saturation that finally knocked over the tree during the extended rain entered mostly downward into the trunk instead of from the ground below. A few of the tree removal contractors also commented that most of the water damage came from above, much of it from the honeybee hive. You claim, "Internal decay in this situation was caused by armillaria, not the phytophthora canker we treated." Once again, research indicates phytophthora canker cannot be treated. Phytophthora canker also causes root rot. I somehow let you convince me that you could save my tree with treatments while monitoring its progress. I also made it clear on my contract that I be informed when your worker would come apply the treatments so that I could be there to inspect the tree with him. Unfortunately for this year's treatment, your employee showed up unannounced, so I was not there to address issues, such as the increasing line of splitting bark or other warning signs. I take responsibility for agreeing to pay for treatments after I found an authoritative research site that indicated the tree would fail from phytophthora canker. What a shame that my family spent $1,580 on this tree, which was a threat to safety and also a nuisance due to the catkins dusting with pollen and clogging the gutters, excessive acorn and leaf droppings, and oak galls. I noticed Bartlett is no longer top-rated, and commission-based work creates aggressive sales tactics. Original Review: My family had used Bartlett's services for years, so when they convinced me to treat a towering white oak stricken with Phytophthora canker disease in 2016, I made a very costly ($11,000+) mistake. Before agreeing to the treatments, I emailed their licensed tree expert, indicating my research showed: "Even the Maryland Extension Service indicates there are no cures once the tree or shrub is infected and the fungi cannot be eliminated from the surrounding soil once the tree or shrub is removed." The Bartlett tree expert replied with an email, "We can suppress Phytophthora (both root rot and canker) to manageable levels with treatment. Once it is under control we typically monitor the disease and retreat when necessary." But Bartlett failed to monitor the disease and was still treating our diseased oak in 2018 when it fell. There were warning signs Bartlett should have seen when they treated the tree in 2018, such as the long line of peeling bark (rotting inside) for six feet from the base of the tree. After the tree fell, it was especially evident the entire core had been rotting for years behind the long line of cracked bark. It fell after several days of rain, but not from the soggy ground making the roots unstable (we had been checking the ground around our large trees daily). It fell from years of internal rotting and the recent deluge of water entering the trunk from the cracked bark and other known cavities, including a honeybee's nest. The photos speak a thousand words. Shame on me for falling for Bartlett's sales tactics instead of listening to scientific research two years earlier. We would have paid less than a third of the cost and much less hassle to cut it down at the time Bartlett started "treatments" in 2016. Hard lesson learned. Our total cost for this diseased tree was over $11,000, beginning with Bartlett's "treatments." Add to that the complicated fallen tree removal using a crane from a neighbor's yard, stump removal, fence reinstallment, etc. Finding a licensed tree care specialist to agree to remove the fallen tree, scheduling, and costs were a nightmare, and our dog was without a fence for several weeks. Bartlett is careful with pruning large limbs and smaller bushes, but you can get a much better price for those services from another certified tree expert. Stay away from their expensive treatments and instead research the problem for alternate solutions. read more

Following a recent storm we found a tree leaning precipitously from our property over our neighbor's deck. A Bartlett arborist was out quickly, assessed the situation and recommended a priority removal. The crew was out within days and were very professional, safety-conscious, and efficient. The tree was in a small strip of land between homes and it took careful engineering by the crew to get is safely out - not a scratch, or any kind of damage, to either home or nearby vegetation. Although the work performed exceeded my expectations, the white female member assigned to the crew was unethical and unprofessional, at times loud and even used profanity words, and on her phone numerous times while working, which I found to be concerning putting at risk my property and of others. It discourages me have to deal with this so-called professional who rolls her eyes at clients and is so confrontational that I would not like to have her near my property if I ever reconsider using Bartlett. Upon hearing a neighbor was impacted, and safety was a likely concern, Bartlett provided an immediate response. I have requested their service for over a decade, and they have come through every time. Reasons for my high grade include: outstanding responsiveness and safety focus; expert knowledge of anything tree related; coordinate with local government if required; excellent planning, communication, coordination with supervisor(s) and assigned crew; and, leaving the yard cleaner than when they arrived. I asked for an evaluation of 2 trees on my property. This company wanted to charge me $850 to evaluate one tree with a report provided to me. The man who was onsite, Noah, argued continually that he would not give me any proposal with a review of my trees unless I paid that high fee. They have 3 levels of evaluation and wanted to charge me $850 for the second level. We never got to a proposal because I could have a tree cut down for $850. My overall customer experience: Overpriced and very difficult to work with. read more

We met with Dan Yates several weeks prior to the work crew coming out to trim our Southern Magnolia. No date was set as we had to wait for it to finish blooming. Then...a short-notice Street Garden Tour was planned and we knew a trimmed tree would make a better impression on that tour. A quick call to Dan right after the 4th of July put us to the head of the line. He had less than a week to re-arrange the work schedule and came through for us. We were generally pleased with the work of his crew. They would have earned a 5-star rating had they also cleaned up under the tree after trimming. But a quick call to Dan and out they came the following week to trim more extensively. This time they cleaned up all debris from the trimming as well as fallen leaves - magnolias leave a LOT of leaves! I would whole-heartedly recommend Bartlett Tree Experts ... and already have. And...I hope they get Dan Yates to work with them personally - from estimate to follow-up. read more

We had a very large pine near our house that had to be removed manually. They came when they said they would, and Daryl and Eddie could not have been better. They were efficient, polite and really took the extra steps to protect the plantings in my garden. In very close quarters they removed the tree and only one leaf on my Hosta was harmed.... and this was a very very tall pine tree with lots of limbs. I would not hesitate to give them a perfect rating. Ron, their arborist, is very knowledgable about trees and pests. He has helped us save a number of our large trees. read more

Courteous and professional service. I wanted pruning done last fall on a large oak tree on our property, as well as on a willow oak with some large boughs hanging menacingly over our roof. I love the trees in my neighborhood so I wanted to a certified arborist to make sure no damage would be done. Our arborist, Bill Eck, was knowledgeable and took the time to walk through my property to talk through what level of attention was needed. There was a bit of a delay in between our consultation and receiving the estimate, but the quote was very reasonable and we booked an appointment in December with no issue. The team that came did fantastic work on the willow oak and removed all debris, but I couldn't tell if any work had been done on the red oak. It seemed strange because the team was very polite and thorough. I called Bill who said the work had been marked as complete but he sent the team back out anyway and did not charge us until we were happy with the work. Overall, a few delays in the process but great quality and very responsive customer service, from the tree services to the office personnel. I would use this company again. read more

We scheduled an appointment that was extremely inconvenient for us, however convenient for Bartlett. Without a doubt, this is the best tree removal service in Montgomery County. A park ranger actually recommended Bartlett Tree Experts to us, and my mother-in-law and a neighbor used them and they were both pleased with their service. Bartlett first helped us by correctly trimming our overgrown crape myrtle (Need tree trimming? Call Bartlett. Do not expect a landscaper to do an arborist's job --- if you want to have the work done properly. We then requested their service again to remove two overgrown cherry trees in our micro-sized front yard. As anticipated, they did an amazing job, even grinding our stumps down to ground level. We've been very satisfied every step of the way, from the initial consultation to having the actual work completed. Barlett is more expensive than similar experts. However, the word is on expert. That they are. They give a free estimate for a work project and a diagnosis of a problem if you detect one.
