Would love to give a huge thanks to the Shifflett family for coming out on a holiday weekend to remove the remains of a very old oak tree that fell on our property, blocking the end of the driveway. The county removed the parts that were blocking public roadway. The tree actually split in half, so that half of it fell blocking the driveway, the street, and extended beyond our entire front yard, and the other half remained standing, which was rather concerning. Luckily it missed nearby structures like cars, power lines, houses etc (somehow). We were all very lucky. Candi and her uncle came out and assessed the damage and recommended we remove the remainder of the tree, which they quickly planned for later that week. They brought a crane and many crew members to safely remove the remaining part of the tree that stood. The whole team is professional, kind, and walked us through every step of the way. We are so grateful they came to us on a holiday weekend to clear our driveway so we could at least get out, and that they came back that week to finish the job with the necessary team members. Consummate professionals. We had a Zelkova four stories high with an 81-inch circumference that needed a special tree removal permit issued by DC govt. The tree was wedged between the concrete carport and a fence. The crew was super careful in safely taking down the tree bit by bit, mulching it, and making sure the surrounding areas were untouched. They also trimmed and shaped a cherry tree and removed two large limbs off a birch tree. This is the second time they have taken care of my trees, and I look forward to working with them again. Shifflett Tree Service removed a ~ 40' willow oak from my townhouse backyard. The service also included stump grinding. Ernie Shifflett made a site visit two days after my initial call and my job was scheduled for two weeks later. Candy, the crew leader called the day before to confirm the job - all communications were done smoothly and professionally. It was, to me at least, a rather challenging job as there were many large limbs close to the backs and decks of three townhomes, including mine. Their take-down execution was flawless and was also fun to watch. The crew of 8 worked efficiently and quickly removing all cut limbs and the trunk. They left all three townhome yards and decks nicely clear of sawdust and debris. The "trunk spot" is nearly level with the ground and will be easy to level further for grass seeding. They evened out the ground and grass area where the enormous trunk fell. Their price was very reasonable for the 5 hours of intense work they completed. With over 60 years of experience the people were artists in their quickly addressing difficult challenges. In minutes they manage to throw a rope extremely high and get full control of the leaning tree and brought it down safely in minutes to my amazement. They have taken care of treework for my house for over 18 years. They have always given a fair price, worked with my schedule. Their initial work was dealing with a backyard and very badly overgrown trees, some 20 years or more old. They removed the unhealthy trees and created an open and healthy beautiful yard. They had to bring in a crane. At no time was I concerned about damage to my property or my neighbors property. Every few years, I have had them out to check the trees and trim them as needed. What a great experience hiring such a professional, knowledgeable, friendly and fast working crew like the Shiffletts to completly clean up my Mom's yard which had become quite overgrown from years of not pruning, squirrel seeded trees and just aging trees. They came out same day and did estimate; scheduled the work for following week and had all the work done in one day. Candi walked the property several times and talked me through which trees needed to be removed and why, which should stay and be cleaned up dead branches removed) or pruned. All trees were marked and all work completed as agreed. They also put cabling in Magnolia tree to help preserve it. Price was incredibly reasonable. They took down a dying ash for me and did a good job. I love that it's a family owned business also. There are a few reasons I'm giving them 1 star. A big one is that I just found out that despite my specifically asking if a tree removal permit was required, they said no. They know better - a permit was required and I could have been fined a serious amount of $$$. Both the homeowner and the tree service can get slapped with hefty fines (like $10K and up) for failing to apply for a permit to remove a tree. For a dead or dying tree, the permits are free. Adirondack Tree not only told me I had to get a permit, they also applied and got it for me. It took about 2 days. Many people may not be aware that in DC and other areas like Takoma Park, MD, you need a permit to remove trees above a certain size, but a professional tree service should know and follow this law, it's there for good reason. See https://ddot.dc.gov/page/tree-regulations Beyond that, Shifflett's estimate that was way more than those from two other tree companies. And last, they recommended trimming my huge elm tree in July, when both other tree companies said elms can only be trimmed in winter when they are dormant. Trimming them when they have leaves risks Dutch Elm disease. Shifflett has been in business for a long time and I have to believe they know better about all of the above. I wish every business conducted themselves the way Shifflett Tree Service does. We used them some years ago and they are the best. After some extremely heavy rains this summer, Rich was in the back yard when he heard a crack. A branch seven feet long and at least six inches around fell from one of our oak trees. Thank goodness no human and none of our three dogs was in the area. The next day there were more heavy branches down, probably because of the weight of being water soaked from the storm. We called Shifflett and they arranged an estimate two days later. Ernie Shifflett came out, remembered our property, and was surprised at how much our old oak trees had grown in the last years. He gave us an estimate and said the schedule was backed up but Kim would call and arrange a service date. He assured us that even though we had a lot of branches to come down it would be safe to wait a few weeks and if he didn't think it was safe he would rearrange their schedule. On the appointed date they arrived right on time. They put a tarp on our pond (our fish thank them), made sure our plants were safe, and went to work. They checked with us to see if we wanted a few of the "iffy" limbs down and took down those that definitely needed to come down. They mulched and removed everything and did an amazing job of cleaning up and leaving everything in the yard the way they found it. Trimming, mulching and cleaning up with three huge oak trees took just about four hours of hard, non-stop work. The company is family owned and run. The crew is amazing. A family-run operation, and in a good way. Three generations of Shiffletts came out to trim the trees on our quarter-acre and they completed it in only an hour. They arrived in a van and a truck with a wood chipper, and with three or four guys simultaneously hanging from trees, they finished their work and were gone before I had a chance to ask them to leave behind some of the woodchips for mulching! But they promised to drop off some chips after their next job. The previous firm we hired took four hours and did far less work, having to haul away large chunks of branches because they didn't bring a woodchipper with them and lacking the proper stump removal equipment. Mr. Shifflett is more than happy to give you a free quote, and although you might find them more expensive than other firms, they more than make up for it in efficiency, responsiveness, and quality (they allowed us to use multiple discount coupons from their ad to help bring down the price). Mr. Shifflett (Ernest) really knows what he's talking about and is more than willing to tell you what his workers are doing and why. They even performed a few other tasks that weren't part of the original quote, which made me very happy. All in all, we're very pleased with them and plan to use them again and again. read more

I had a tree that had not been trimmed in about 40 years and was about 4 stories tall, and they did a great job of making it look like a tree again, and I am hoping I can spend much less time picking up sticks and branches. They were supposed to do an estimate for tree trimming, the gentleman showed up with no mask. When I met him in the back I offered him a mask and he refused. I told him I had asthma and him not wearing a mask kill me. He said "I work outside, that's not for me, I don't do that" even after I told him about my medical condition. I felt horribly disrespected and at this time the mask mandate is still in effect. I can't say that they don't do a good job, I wouldn't know because I would never hire a company that doesn't care about their customers safety. I asked him to leave of course. If you choose to use this company you need to know that if you're going to have an estimate done they do not mask when entering your property although it's still the rules of Montgomery County that they do. read more
