We met in person with Barton CPA as a new client in February, 2025, to have our 2024 returns prepared. We gave them all the necessary information, and emphasized that an extension had to be filed for our joint return as well as my husband's trust because historically we have not had all the required documents by April 15th. I followed up a few weeks later reminding them that an extension must be filed on our behalf. In September, 2025 Barton did indeed prepare our joint and trust returns. However, a few weeks later we started receiving notices from the IRS and the State of California notifying us of penalties and interest due as a result of filing late returns. When I asked Barton about it, they said that I came to them after the extension filing date of March 31st. I reminded them that I had met with them in early February and followed up with an email a few weeks later, and included a copy of our correspondence. They had not filed an extension for our joint return or for my husband's trust even though we clearly had discussed it and there was follow up correspondence. Their only response was "We messed up". As result, we have had to pay several thousands of dollars in late filing fees and interest. In addition, their fees for preparation were almost double what we had paid our previous CPA, with whom we never had an issue. Our previous CPA retired, otherwise we would still be using him. Needless to say, we are very dissatisfied with Barton. read more

I went to Barton CPA in 2021 for a consultation regarding a type of financial transaction that is known for potentially causing a big tax liability if not done properly. In the past, my tax situation was fairly straightforward to the point where I filled my own taxes. But with this new situation I knew (and was advised by my financial advisor and others) that I needed expert advice to ensure I did not incur excessive, additional taxes. I met with a senior tax accountant at Barton's Palm Springs office, explained the situation to him, and provided him with the documentation he requested. A few days later, I received a message from him explaining that I would not be hit with additional taxes if I proceeded with the transaction. Based on his advice, I proceeded to do the transaction. This year, when I prepared my taxes, I was coming up with an additional tax liability because of the transaction in excess of $48,000. When I discovered this, I went back to him to review what I came up with. He reviewed my tax return, along with two other CPAs, and they all came to the same result. He simply apologized and explained that he "misunderstood the nature of the transaction." If a "misunderstanding" by their senior tax accountant can cost me over $48,000, I'm afraid what the non-senior accountants could cost others. As for Chauncey T.'s response on Jun 30 2022 to this review, I have no idea what "any issues from the tax forms you filed through another service" is referring to. Perhaps he can elaborate. The only issue is what I have described above: the "misunderstanding" of the senior tax account at your firm that cost me big time. Furthermore, if there were issues with the tax forms I filed, why is it that they were not brought to my attention when your senior tax accountant and the two other CPAs reviewed my tax return, because those are the exact forms I filed after they said he misunderstood the situation? read more

AVOID THIS DAMNED FIRM. No racial slurs were used in any manner. There is in fact no explosive behavior on my end aside from the representative of the establishment. Your staffs negligence to communicate, process, overcharge, and falsify tax records for a bigger refund is insane and illegal. You and your staff have the upmost disrespectful customer service possible in any franchise when losing a client. Your tax agency is a very slow business to prepare tax records when other tax agencies can prepare them the same day they are handed off. Your company attempts to charge clients even after the client chooses not to prepare taxes with your agency when tacking back their tax forms. Your rates are outrageous, customer service is appalling, tax processing time moves at a snails pace, front desk staff neglect to answer phone calls at times, furthermore. I've been charged nearly $1k on two separate occasions for tax preparations that were no longer authorized to occurs after two days of holding onto my tax records. Your company is tragic and the defamation is barbaric. Screw your firm and your staff. AVOID THIS DAMNED FIRM. read more

My family and I have been using Gregory for a few years now. First couple of years went well. But this last tax season, one of his associates made mistakes that made us owe $6000 more than we should for just one of the filings. When my mother in law made an appointment with Gregory to point out the errors, he got all snippy and defensive. Gregory Barton and associates said they would fix it and hold off on e-filing. But then they decided file our taxes with all the errors on it and file an amendment afterwards. Gregory made us aware that we would be getting bills from state and federal; and to let him know when that happens so he can call them personally to make sure they received the amendment and everything is fixed. But now he is no where to be found and will not return phone calls. Taxes are complicated; that's why we pay a large amount of money for assistance. But if one of my relatives has to tell you how to do your job correctly, then I think one of the associates needs more training before handling complicated business taxes. We basically paid over a thousand dollars to do our own taxes and deal with the IRS ourselves. If you still decide to give these people your business, be prepared and willing to look over everything carefully; or spend as much time doing your taxes yourself. You won't waste your money doing the latter. read more

My taxes are usually pretty simple, so I'd gotten pretty accustomed to using Turbo Tax. This last year was the first time I had multiple W2s -along with a move, health insurance, & a few other life changes- so I decided I should sit down with a tax professional instead of trusting the online systems I'd previously used, & it certainly paid off! Not only was my return bigger than it's ever been, but Greg was able to explain to me exactly where all that return money comes from & what I can do to expect an even larger return next year. I had Barton and Associates, specifically Arthur, complete my 2014 tax return. After not receiving my refund for over a year and spending over 30 hours on the phone with the IRS, and attempting to get in contact with Arthur, nothing came out of it. Arthur asked me to sign a power of attorney form so he could take care of my taxes...and did nothing nor did he get back into contact with me. I finally had to have a different accountant from a different agency help me with completing an amended tax return, because after finally getting answers from the IRS, they informed me that my tax refund was filed incorrectly to begin with. I have spoke with several associates at Barton and Associates and they have all seemed courteous, professional and knowledgable. Unfortunately, I did not work with any of them. I worked with Arthur. So if you end up getting your taxes done at Barton and Associates...avoid Arthur like the plague! TurboTax would be more helpful than him read more
