I arrived at this emergency center with my daughter at 2:00 p.m. due to an eye emergency. The initial registration process and vital signs were relatively quick. The physician then ordered a CT scan. An IV was placed, and we were walked to the imaging area. During the procedure, my daughter vomited. She was given a hospital gown and returned to the treatment area, where she remained for more than four hours wearing soiled clothing and with the smell of vomit, without being offered any appropriate option for hygiene, clean clothing, or basic care. This was deeply uncomfortable and undignified. We repeatedly requested information about the test results. We spent an extended period in an exam room without any medical provider present, with a computer left open displaying sensitive information about other patients who were waiting. This represents a serious breach of privacy and confidentiality. Eventually, we were verbally told that the CT scan showed no findings, without a clear explanation or immediate follow-up plan. In total, we have been in the facility for over 10 hours. Later, a doctor entered the room and once again asked why we were there, highlighting a troubling lack of continuity and communication in her care. This experience was dehumanizing, marked by a lack of empathy and a failure to meet the basic standards of respect, hygiene, communication, and confidentiality that every patient deserves--especially in an emergency setting. As of 12:07 a.m., we are still waiting to be discharged, alone in the doctor's exam room, and have now been waiting for more than 40 additional minutes with no communication or update. read more

I took my mom for a cataract consult. The service at this hospital is top notch from the moment you enter. The check in once we got to our floor ( floors have different specialties) was very modern and easy and someone is there to help. Once we got to the waiting area we waited 30 mins for eye exam. The longest wait was to see the doctor. It was well worth it ( average appointment duration is 3hs). The Doctor was friendly, explained everything in detail and scheduled the surgeries before we left. What was not so great was the parking, the lot was really full. They have valet but the line to leave car and then pick up was crazy! No doubt that UM has the best doctors. read more

BILLING: I went to the Bascom Palmer Emergency Room for a detached retnia emergency, to save my eyesight. Violating Florida Law 'no surprise act' BP is balance billing me for emergency services $16k. BP not responding to requests for help by web portal, email, and phone. All the services I've received are 'emergency services' for detached retnia, however BP billing department keeps submitting billing codes to my insurance company as 'out-of-network'. BP illegally wouldn't perform emergency surgery unless I paid $15k upfront. Now I am still fighting with the billing department for 2 months. Christina L 5/21 confirmed everything is being balanced bill as 'self pay' and should have been submitted as emergency services with the maximum co-pay of $220. Contacted Carolina Y 4/23, 5/11, 5/14, 5/29. Contacted Rebecca R 4/25, 5/14, 5/29. Contacted Marlea & Barbie 5/29 by phone. NEGLIGENT NONDISCLOSURE: a couple nurses took their time, explained who and what was going to happen. However, BP bullied and pushed me through as quickly as possible. Namely, Dr. Smith. Especially surgeon Dr. Smiddy who can't be bothered to spend more then 4 minutes tops. Smiddy visits were negligent and severely lacked the appropriate testing, instructions, expectations, prognosis, details, how to compensate. When I try to ask Dr Smiddy anything, either it's an arrogant god complex, or he wont answer. Any detached retnia info came from looking it up online myself. Seeing Dr. Smiddy, pre or postoperative, he looks at my chart, looks at my eye and 4 minutes without answers, information or advice. No prognosis, risks, or recovery. Why did he operate twice for the same issue? There's high risk with oil tamponade for 6 months, why is that ordered? Why transient positional blackouts? Why no testing prior to my next apointment eg: OCT, FAF which is 3x more accurate then a human. A dereliction of duty. COERCION: on intake at the ER I was coerced under duress to sign documents and denied permission to read them. Asked to sign a healthcare directive, if they kill me. While everyone has my health history on the screen, nobody looks at it. Dr Smiddys scheduler called to illegally demand payment for 4/16 emergency surgery before they would perform it. Same as with my first emergency surgery 4/2 they illegally demanded $15,000 payment up front before they would admit me. What could I do, because I was faced with losing my eyesight from a detached retina, now I'm fighting with them to submit it to my insurance. MEDICAL FRAUD: Nurse Margie Blum used the pre-operative consult 1. She's adamantly against the COVID vaccine. She told me she refused to get it until her medical director yelled at her. she claims that the vaccine causes more harm than good and it harmed her. 2. I was wearing an n95 mask. She said my mask will give me lung cancer, and it gave her lung cancer. 3. claimed the hand sanitizer on her desk and hospital wide only kills bacteria but not viruses. 4. Immediately after discussing my narcotics allergy. She recommended that I try a deadly mix of marijuana, magic mushrooms and anti-parasitic drugs for my long COVID. INATTENTION: Prior to the operation a nurse removed my mask and put it on upside down smacking me in the operative eye. Thank goodness I was wearing a mask because there was a man in the ER prep room 4/2 who appeared to have the flu. read more

Should be called "Bascom Palmer Waiting Institute". Due to an injury, I first had to visit the ER on New Years Day. 8 hours later I was able to leave, after a brief exam and CT. The exam and medication schedule seemed thorough. I was told to make an appointment for 4-5 days later for followup, which I did, for 2:00 on the following Monday. The place was absolutely PACKED with people. Seems they require a followup within that time frame. If the patient doesn't go, then you have to re-visit the ER and pay that amount of copay again. But they give everyone the same time appointment, and we just wait, and wait, and wait. My 2:00 very brief appointment actually took place at 5:45 ( Why not give people the actual time for their appointments???? Although most everyone there was nice, cordial, helpful, it does not excuse the horribly inefficient scheduling . Additionally, I was given no advance instructions regarding parking. Instead of anyone thinking to tell me that they had a dedicated parking lot that is free to BP patients, I erroneously parked in the Jackson Memorial parking garage, which cost me $11 and the exit machine wasn't even working properly. Came here with my mom multiple times for her eyes. She now sees eye specialist and they are all located here. There are a few positive things that I like off the bat. First they have parking. Plenty of parking I feel. Always a plus in any facility. The con is that you do have to pay for the parking and I want to say it's 10 dollars every time I come. When you walk in there is an information desk and they are very kind and helpful. When you go to any area most of the conversations we have had have all been positive and kind. My mom had surgery so we experienced that. The process for surgery is actually great and they even keep you updated with your phone so you don't even have to wait in the waiting room. I actually waited in the car while the surgery happened. They have a small cafe nearby that has some food and coffee which is always a plus. All in all good hospital and nice staff. I had chronic blepharitis from age 22-34 and it was miserable and gross and contributed to losing friends from taking forever to get ready, even losing jobs from my bloodshot eyes at interviews. Dr victor perez, told me i had demodex mites, yet failed to give me the most BASIC cure to kill them and make my life better. I went many times and got the same lame old antibiotic steroid ointment every time for years... til i went to an actually HELPFUL CAPABLE dr woman in another state. Ivermectin pills was all it took, they cost like 10 bucks, yet i was at this garbage "institute " spending all day waiting, to get the same old, paying thru the nose, when i could've had a very different life. What an incompetent doctor "specialist " It makes me sick to think about.. if anyone reading this has the same, please get actual treatment, not here. read more

Updating my original review.. I hate doing bad reviews, but on top of the fact it was a discouraging experience; when you usually get good service and then get horrendous service the second time, it's something I have to note. It's hard to swallow when we came back for a "follow appointment" , with no clear information, after I requested it multiple times, including at our initial appointment, and then get hit with "you have to pay a $500 deposit just for the doctor to see you". We paid $350 for the first time at the ER for a blocked tear duct, they basically didn't do anything, but give us the same instructions/ at home remedies we were already following that were not working, hence why we even went to the ER, and then just said if it doesn't get better here's your follow up appointment. They also sent us a separate bill after the initial appointment after I asked them to charge me in FULL the first time. At this follow up appointment they were supposed to do a procedure if the remedies they sent the first time didn't work, which we knew and told them it wouldn't because we had been trying that for a YEAR before going to the ER. $500 DEPOSIT for the doctor to even see their patient that they already did something on that didn't work. I just couldn't wrap my head around it. I understand charging me after the appointment/procedure, but $500 when they won't give me clear instructions on what they have to do or might do... WHY. I kept politely asking for information or at least to talk to the doctor to see if it's even worth seeing them, and they kept saying "it's $500 to determine if treatment is medically necessary, take it or leave it". Exact words. I was mind blown then I simply posed the question "isn't this supposed to be one of the best facilities in the country for eye care"? They laughed and said yeah. Mind you, they were the ones who did lasik on this same eye that now has an issue, so the fact I have to pay $500 for a doctor to determine if it's medically necessary to see me is insane. More than anything, the lack of care, compassion, and information from everyone in the ER room this day was not something I've ever experienced. I'm hoping they were all just having a terrible day. As an American citizen, It really is worth it to travel out of the country to get your healthcare which is so sad. read more

You won't get anything done here unless you're persistent. The Miami office didn't answer my calls for a week, and after I paid for my contact lenses, they never even placed the order. I only found out two days later and had to call for two straight days demanding answers before anything was done. Very frustrating and unprofessional. There only a few doctors at this clinic, and we had to go there after our babies were discharged from the NICU. The doctors are condescending and kept rescheduling the appointments. Dr Hua wrote and told us contradictory things in records compared to what they told us when they kept delaying our appointments. They finally gave us a 3 month delayed appt date with an optometrist who was quite honestly condescending. In person, she said everyting was good . However, I reviewed the notes in the chart, and it looks like at the end, to cover her liability, she wrote limited exam of peripheral visual fields which indicates she couldn't even get a full look at their retina properly. She did not tell us this which appears to be dishonest with the care. I don't think I trust anything they tell us. Dr Tamkins was her name. Wouldn't recommend this place at all. read more

I would not recommend Bascom Palmer. My son was a patient there for seven years, and unfortunately, we had a very negative experience. He was frequently seen by rotating University of Miami students, and I often felt like he was being used more for training than receiving focused care. His condition worsened to the point where he nearly lost his vision. Thankfully, we switched to a private practice in Broward this past year, and he is already on the path to recovery. It's have been more than 3 weeks since Dr. Lee sent me to her surgical assistant, Solia to get a surgery date. Solia won't do the work. Never pick up her phone nor reply to my calls. Only sent me a msg on the portal after I reached out to her supervisors.... Almost a month now still can't get a surgery date on the calendar. This is the second time that this has happened to me. First surgery was urgent. I had to wait for weeks to get a surgery on the schedule. I warn all patients who wants to visit this hospital. Your eye issue maybe eventually would get fixed. But in the mean time you will die of stress, disappointment n frustration speaking to the staff who do no work. It was our first time at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute. We were there with our 2 1/2 year old son who had injured the top of his eye while playing. He was seen by Dr. Piero Carletti who treated us with such patience and care. The amount of patience and bed side manners he had was impressive . He took his time and had patience when my son wasn't always cooperating. He explained everything step by step and really made us feel at ease with checking my sons visions . Dr. Jason Fan also came and checked my son after Dr. Piero Carletti checked him. Dr. Fan was also very nice and explained everything very well. I am so thankful for this team. When a place has 2 stars, probably not a good idea to go there. I went there out of desperation because I was visiting from out of town and did not have a local doctor. I had a stye/chalazion on my eyelid and needed to treat it. I called Bascom virtually and told them that I needed ointment, but could not have a particular ingredient. They of course prescribed something with that ingredient. I therefore went to their walk in care to get a prescription in person. At this appointment, first of all, they do a lot of unnecessary and expensive exams to train their residents. Then, a resident kept pushing on my under eye skin with her fingernail. It was uncomfortable and she said "Don't worry, I'm a doctor." (She was a resident, but she didn't clarify that). She broke my under-eye skin!!! You know the skin that you want to be clear and beautiful and light right below your eye? Yes, she broke it with her fingernail and it was bleeding!! I then needed follow up appointments to deal with it. In the end, I complained about the care I received. (And I also am responsible to pay over $1000 for all this lovely care). I got a lovely long letter from "Patient Experience" (attached) telling me that it's normal for a chalazion to rupture on its own. Umm....no. They just sort of dry up or leak out through your tear duct hole in your lid, they don't rupture right through the front of your face and cause a scar from a fingernail breaking your skin! If you want care other than this, please go somewhere else. My complaint wasn't about the cost of the follow up visits - those were very little with my insurance coverage. It's about the fact that you experiment on your patients and damage them!!!! read more

Do not get cataract surgery if you receive shots for wet macular degeneration. The Dr. did not warn me that cataract material could be left in the back of the macula and it is dangerous to remove. So I have a huge blob or white floater in my eye and then it also formed scar tissue which can't be removed. So list 25% of my vision in my only good eye. I went to a Retina Specialist doctor for my first appointment, he made my next appointment to give me my eye injections and when I arrived he told me that they forgot to go through my insurance, so I couldn't get my needed injections after I waited for months and hours. Worst medical experience of my life, and I've been thru a lot. They turned a simple cataract surgery into a living nightmare. They scratched my cornea, twice (once during the cataract surgery and once post surgery by the optometrist). They put in the wrong lens that we agreed to prior to the surgery and changed the lens saying I agreed to it albeit after I was given sedation on the operating table, which they admitted to saying I agreed after I was given sedation. The waiting room is always filled and appointments run 2-4 hours late if you're lucky, with no explanations. My advice as a medical professional myself is to stay away from this McDonalds of an eye clinic. read more
