I was given helpful information about fun things to do in anchorage and throughout Alaska. David was especially helpful (one of the house parents) went out of his way to help me when I arrived off business hours, and give me extra info about anchorage bike trails, shopping, and beautiful places throughout the state. All of the staff old and new are very friendly, fun and had great things to say about working there. It is also very close to the airport and right around the corner from the 7 bus downtown! I would highly recommend this hostel!!

Small private rooms but ok for the price. Cons: Bathrooms weren't that clean and toilets were working on and off on one day. No clue how to get a hold of someone in the morning since no one's at the front desk. Not a very happening hostel; met some travelers in the kitchen but everyone was just doing their thing. Overall 3 stars coz of the value for money. Great if you're just looking for a quick stay. It's located a little ways from the center but so are the other hostels.

After driving from Wrangell-St. Elias National Park, we realized we needed a place to stay for the night as we were flying out of Anchorage at 9am the next morning. So, once we got cellular service back, I looked up some hostels in the downtown Anchorage area and called Bent Prop Inn. The phone call went something like this, Me: "Do you have availability for tonight for two people?" Bent Prop Inn (BPI): "Yes, would you like a four bed dorm room or an eight bed dorm room?" Me: "Are they the same price?" BPI: "Yes, both rooms are $30 per night, per person." Me: "Great! How about the four bed dorm room." BPI: "Ok, I will put you down, come by anytime." Awesome! Another night we didn't have to sleep in the car!!! So when we were finished eating at Snow City Cafe, we ventured over to the hostel to check in. What a mistake. Arriving at 3:42pm, we were told that check in didn't start until 4pm and we were more than welcome to sit and hang out on the couch directly in front of their registration desk. Uh, awkward, no thanks. We returned to our rental car and drove around a bit. When we asked where we could park upon returning to the hostel, the young lady at the front desk told us she wasn't sure because she didn't have a car. Um, whether you have a car or not, you should be able to recommend a place for guests to park. Upon reviewing their website for this review, it says parking is available for $4 a day. I wonder where that was! I know I could have (and should have) explored the hostel myself but it would have been really nice if we were informed about the free WiFi, kitchen area, and other amenities when we checked in. The rooms and bathroom were both clean. It was kind of weird that the janitorial staff were cleaning at like 7 or 8pm and that there was a person sleeping on the couch behind the check in desk. I loved the ability to walk to downtown Anchorage if I went left but didn't quite feel comfortable walking to the right. Like I said before, it was a place to stay and it was very A-OK.

It was exceptionally simple, with a bed and one side table, but our bathroom was right outside the door, and they provided towels for us. It was quiet, inexpensive and just what I expected from a hostel. On our last night in Alaska, EVERY hotel in Anchorage was booked solid (I wish I was exaggerating, but we made calls for hours). We stopped back into Bent Prop and even though they were nearly full, they put us in separate bunk rooms (women's and men's). The bunk room was tight for sure, with 6 girls, a lot of luggage, and people coming in and out frequently - but, pretty typical hostel. What impressed me about Bent Prop was the staff. On both our evenings, the staff were SO friendly and went above and beyond to help us. If you are on a budget, this a great place to stay.

A big drawback is the hours. There is a midnight curfew during the week and 1 AM on the weekends, which feels a bit restrictive since the sun doesn't even set until midnight in the summer. The place shuts down 11 AM to 4 PM and you can't be in your room or the office. No safe storage for big bags - just lockers for valuables. Bring your own lock.

The people running the show at the Hostel were as friendly and informative as it gets. My stay was a bit off their season. Which, I guess is why they were in full tilt maintenance mode, literally replacing an entire bathroom with beautiful tile & new fixtures, all without disturbing anyone (there are so many bathrooms, which before staying there I was leery about). Parking was interesting (you are in downtown) until I found Delaney Park on 9th, which is free, otherwise you'll have to do metered. But, if you're truly backpacking the bus system is awesome (really easy to follow) and it's across the street down 1/2 block to the main terminal...very convenient! Cooking was really fun there, everyone was accommodating as to usage of stoves, etc.& everyone traded food. Basically if you mentioned something smelled good they would be giving you a little plate to try...very nice people! I stayed in a private room, which was clean, comfortable & quite. The bunk rooms looked like fun though, maybe next time- cause the price is right!!

The girl at the front counter in my morning experience, was helpful to an extent, she seemed way more worried about texting on her phone. I then waited in the lobby and she was on the phone with a boyfriend talking about how much she hated her life. Later that evening, I checked in around 10:15pm. I was told that my 6 person room was not available, I had booked a room via the internet with confirmation. She then told me there was a 4 person room available and I would still only have to pay the $25 rate...thats fine. Well when I get to my room the lady in the room is very irritated i'm there. She said she stays here a lot for periods of time. Then proceeded to talk about how hot the room was and how no one ever wants to stay in it. I then proceed downstairs and the girl goes and looks to see if their is any room in the 6 person rooms. She finds that their is. She kept saying she doesn't know if there is or isn't...i mean how do you not know your occupancy? I then move to the 6 person room where I'm told that there are no bunks available. So I have to go back downstairs to ask about it and the employee just says, i don't know, its first come first serve i guess. So i have no idea if i'm stealing anyones bed, i was just told "there was an asian girl there who hurt her back yesterday and she hasn't been here since the morning", ummmm okay, i'm super tired so i'm not going to complain, I just need a place to sleep for the night. I then have to go downstairs again to ask about towels, i wasn't given any direction on check out times, amenities NOTHING....She gives me a towel, thats great, thank you, I then will proceed to find wherever the showers are by myself. I find a women's private bathroom on my floor (2nd). It is pretty clean, especially compared to where I stayed the previous night for 6x the cost. It was great heat and decent water pressure (not the greatest but good enough), the lock worked (I read previous reviews that someone's didn't). It worked for what I needed, so points there. I then proceed to go and do laundry. It is $1.50 each wash and $1.50 for dry. As I sit in the lobby, I am listening to the front desk employee and long term residents talk. Resident (R): What time is it? Employee (E): 11:00pm, one hour to get out of this shithole, then tomorrow I have to start all over again, I can't stand this place..etc...goes on her soap box about how horrible her life is. Another conversation: R: Why can't I get a room to myself for more than 3 nights in a row. E: I try to help you out as much as I can. R: I make every person leave that I can to have privacy. This Resident is the same woman who wanted me out of her room.

It was a major inconvenience due to the fact that we had a lot of luggage and a little kid with us. We came to Qupqugiaq and were treated with such kindness and grace it felt like a lifesaver. Luckily the room was so filthy that I thought there were a good probability of bedbugs and I didn't take anything out of my bags, leaving them zipped up. Still, I'm going to have to stop by a laundromat instead of mountain biking this morning and dry everything on HIGH to kill any bedbugs.

Flight was on the ground and we were at the door at 5:55pm. Lady ignored us and locked the doors. There were a handful of renters that were left either finding a place to stay or staying in the parking lot in the rv. Checkout the following morning took a whole 10 minutes! So we had to delay our departure by 13 hours for a 10 minute process. For $4100 to rent the rv, I would think a reasonable amount of flexibility warranted. This delayed us getting to a scheduled fishing charter at cooper landing. The shuttle was also not running so we had to grab an Uber to get there. Be aware of this when considering flight times. The rv was ok.

My family rented an RV from Amazing Accommodation Alaska (AAA) for 13 nights from late June to…read moreearly July. It's summertime in Alaska so I booked the RV months in advance. Sabine (the owner) answered all the questions we had from RV to mosquitoes to everything else under the sun. She helped us so much on planning the entire Alaska trip. She was so patient and kind. Because AAA is outside of Anchorage, you don't have to pay the 10% tax. Another thing we love about AAA is that they have no hidden fees. At the end, I think we saved about $700 renting from AAA comparing to other big RV companies in Anchorage. The RV was very clean and in good condition when we got it. Picnic chairs and table and cooler come with the RV rental at no additional charge. They provide a good supply of kitchenware (pots, pans, dishes, small bowls, cookware, silverware, etc.) toiletries, clean towels, first aid kit, cooler, pillows, blankets. They will make sure you have enough for the length of your rental. They even put a pair of latex glove for dump stations which we thought was very thoughtful. They let us borrow a bear spray but luckily we didn't need to use it. Before you take off, Sabine, personally, would go over the RV with you, and show you how to operate the gas stove, turn on/off the generator, water heater, AC, heater, etc. She put together a little manual in case of emergency. She gave us her cell number in case we ran into any problems with the RV, we would have been able to contact her. We forgot how to operate a few things and I had to call her a couple times; Sabine was more than happy to show us again. I can't say enough how happy and satisfied we are with Sabine and her rental company. They are amazing beyond words. I would strongly recommend using Amazing Accommodation Alaska.

I put "company" in air quotes bc even though it is a business, it didn't feel that way. You can tell immediately this is a personal venture - Clinton was extremely prompt with any communication. We booked through outdoorsy.com and there was a system glitch two days before our arrival so my husband emailed Clinton and he called back very shortly afterwards to explain and confirm our van and dates of reservation. He picked us up at the airport (with a 6 am arrival time no less! He also dropped us off back at the airport) and then took his time to review the contract and functionality of the camper. He was thoughtful and thorough and very responsive. Felt like everything had a personal touch to it and he was honest. The camper is extremely well equipped. Bed is comfortable, and comes with pillows, sheets and an amazing comforter. There are drapes for privacy which was great to block out the night time light (since the sun sets so late here in the Summer; they're not black out drapes and we were told that from the get go. Again, honest owner ) and adds privacy when we parked (drapes blocks out the front and side windows). There is a pump sink, all the major cooking pots and cast iron pan (!), coffee pot, propane portable grill, table for eating inside and folding table for grilling roadside. Large cooler also comes with. Recessed lighting and surround sound with Bluetooth connection means you're one click away from a van party (Seriously. The bass is legit.). Comes with plugs and usb connection and axillary battery to charge all your mobile devices. The van is smooth to drive (okay, I admit, I didn't drive it, but my husband loved it and said it was easy to use and drive). We averaged 25-30 miles a gallon (which is amazing for a van). It was clean, quiet, and totally met and exceeded our needs and expectations! #glamping Hands down if we come back again, we will be looking to rent from Northern Nomads again. They won't leave your stranded. Clinton was telling us how he's looking into a spare van/camper to make sure people who book with him won't be stranded should there be an issue with the van (ex. Tire issue, bull moose crash - these are real examples). You spend a lot of time, money and energy getting to the last frontier, you want to make sure it's a solid trip. THIS will give you a home to stay while maximizing your time in Alaska!

I was really shocked he was able to find a same day available RV to rent in June, since RV's reservations are made MONTHS in advance in the summer in Anchorage. He scoured the internet and found this teeny mom n pop company listed on Outdoorsy.co (not .com) that had an RV immediately available. He was able to make his reservation and payment on line and the RV was ready for pickup a few hours later. We showed up to pick up the RV at 6pm and I have to say, the place looked sketchy. There's no signs, not office and the lot is way in the back down a bumpy dirt road. But, everything actually turned out to be fine. The fleet is a little older, but the owner Tom is a mechanic and keeps everything running fine. It's quite a bit cheaper than some of the other places in town with newer fleets. We're hardcore Alaskans that don't believe in glamping; we just wanted hard sided protection from wildlife. Tom's and his helper spent a long time with us giving us the RV 101 orientation, which was awesome. The RV had everything we needed, although I do wish it had USB chargers. Note to self, bring a cell charger that plugs into the cig lighter. But everything was a-ok. We had all the kitchen doodads we needed, and since we mentioned Yelp we got free linens. Insurance was included. Tom made us very safe and let us know if we had any issues or questions we could call or text day or night. He also said he'd provide roadside assistance should we need it. I really appreciated the personalized service. If you like supporting the little guy, I highly recommend giving Alaska Family Motorhomes a shot! We'll definitely rent from them again if the need arises.

This was my base camp for the last week of May. From the time I booked, to the day I checked in, to the day I checked out, the experience was one unparalleled by other hostels. Their website is easy to navigate, streamlined and interactive, and makes booking a breeze. The staff is what makes this hostel more than a place to crash, but rather one you look forward coming back to. They are genuine, hospitable, and engaging. Their warmth radiates over the colder Alaskan climate. They know the area and are on the pulse of what's happening locally. They provided several carpool opportunities to which everyone's invited to join. Whether it's to see a surprisingly great local Alaskan band one night or all you can eat and drink BBQ and beer at a picnic with a live band another day, you can be sure similar excursions will be offered during your stay. You'll always find like-minded individuals from all walks of life staying at the hostel that are looking to join or invite you for whatever you feel like doing, whether it's hiking, biking, experiencing local cuisine, or simply exchanging stories of adventure. The staff do an amazing job at keeping the place spotless, including the bathrooms, rooms and common areas. No dust bunnies kept as pets here. There is a fully stocked community kitchen that's open to anyone for use and refrigerator space is aplenty. You can sleep easy knowing the main door is a security code entry and there are plenty of lockers for everyone. The washing machine and dryer downstairs are extremely convenient. And most importantly, the wifi was very fast. If you stay here when you fly into Anchorage, after completing your Alaskan adventure, you're sure to make room for another night at Base Camp before flying out. read more

I recently stayed at this hostel, and it completely exceeded my expectations! The amenities were amazing, free breakfast, bike rentals, gear rentals. Feeling bougie? They have a sauna and a sensory deprivation tank all of which made my stay even more enjoyable. The cleanliness of the place stood out -- I saw constant cleaning. The staff were exceptionally accommodating and always went the extra mile to ensure guests had a great experience. I also had the pleasure of meeting some lovely fellow travelers, and sharing meals together created a warm, communal atmosphere. One of the highlights was the beautiful teepee outside with a fire pit, hanging out with other travelers while watching chickens roam around. The hostel offers both rooms and the option to camp in a tent in its expansive yard, providing a great variety of experiences for guests. Overall, I would give this place a 10/10! I would go back and highly recommend it to anyone looking for a unique and memorable stay! read more

I have only been traveling throughout Alaska for a small amount of time in the grand scheme of things but if you are looking for a great place to stop in between your adventures, then this is the place to go! When I first arrived, I could immediately tell that it was a quality place. The hostel has recently been taken over by new ownership and he totally renovated everything from top to bottom. The hostel is extremely clean, spacious, and relaxed, not to mention its within walking distance from many cool places to grab a bite to eat and a nice beer. Ole, who is the new owner is also a huge wealth of information on outdoor things to do in the area for hiking, biking, rafting, or backpacking trips so definitely ask for the cool spots to go. This place is highly recommended and I will definitely be back along my travels in the future. read more

I stayed here during my travels in Anchorage and I'm very glad I did. The management not only got me setup with a room but they literally sat down with me and helped me build an itinerary of things to do and see. I had a fantastic time. I met people from all over the world and even had the pleasure of backpacking with some of them. The fenced in backyard with the picnic tables allowed for a great place where we grilled out and spent some of our evenings. I recommend Base Camp for those seeking fellowship with other travelers or simply a bed made with care. The management has recently changed and a lot of amends were made to the hostel. There isn't one thing I would change. They have a wonderful thing going. Go check them out! read more

The best hostel for backpackers!!! I stayed here on and off for almost a month, it was my Alaskan base camp. Ole, the owner, acquired and began changing the hostels image earlier this year. The clientele are predominantly backpackers but they cater to holiday makers too. There is a positive energy at the hostel, Ole and his carefully selected team are at hand to give advice and help plan your adventure. I did a couple of trips with Jonathon who worked at the hostel, the staff want to make friends and experience Alaska too! The hostel has brilliant wifi, good cooking and a laundry facilities, and the garden is perfect for bbq's on a hot day. Rent a bike for $10 a day and explore the beautiful trails through Anchorage. read more

I am a first-timer hostel user. I approached Base Camp with fearful trepidation imagining the horrors of a hostile hostel. My concerns were assuaged the moment we were greeted by the managers (Cory & Jake). Besides their professionalism, genuine kindness and courtesy, the cleanliness of the facility dispelled all worries. I met the owner on my third night. From our brief conversation he appears to be a sincere and tender soul himself. My wife and I would easily utilize the services of Base Camp Anchorage if we are privileged to visit Anchorage again. read more

If you are a travler looking for a safe and friendly place to spend a couple of down days in Anchorage then this is a great place to do it. Overall the hostel is very clean esspcially compared to others I have been to. The owner, Ole is very accomadting and can give real good advice if you are unsure on your next adventure if its in Anchorage or anywhere in Alaska. Really couldn't ask for much better. My first thought when I arrived at Base Camp Anchorage was how clean and well taken care of the hostel was. It has a complete kitchen to cook that salmon you just caught and three fridges to save leftovers. The owner is very nice and knowledgeable about activities in Alaska. I've met a lot of great people here that I have spent some time traveling Alaska with. After all the trips I do, I always come back to Base Camp Anchorage. read more

This is a great hostel to stay at - largely the owner, Olegario, has been the reason why I'll make this my first stop in Anchorage every time. His desire to do everything right the first time and hospitality have been overwhelmingly helpful and the space he and his team have created at Base Camp is always a welcoming energy. read more

Really great place to be. Nice and clean. Very helpful staff. Great location: REI and AMH around the corner (perfect for climbers going for Denali). Big garden, where you can hang out after climb. Large and well equipped kitchen. Close to Bear Tooth bar with best beers on Alaska. Great price! read more

I was given helpful information about fun things to do in anchorage and throughout Alaska. David was especially helpful (one of the house parents) went out of his way to help me when I arrived off business hours, and give me extra info about anchorage bike trails, shopping, and beautiful places throughout the state. All of the staff old and new are very friendly, fun and had great things to say about working there. It is also very close to the airport and right around the corner from the 7 bus downtown! I would highly recommend this hostel!!

In addition , I am certain that the Managers John and helper Cindy's due diligence in active screening of those who stay and instant involvement in any questionable or bad activity that occurs. the bad- they are partial to an odd pattern, I saw some homeless drunk and hypes get really good treatment while a few sober working people got close to rude abrupt treatment while they were being more than kind to the proprietor. I got stand off ish treatment although I tried to be genuinely friendly as they seemed like good people, 2 different people I saw down the road that were guest when I was said the managers said bad unkind untrue things of me behind my back, they both told me without my asking, and I believe them as, they were not associated with one another, they were honest as I knew them, it explains a lot about what I experienced there.
