Our stay was totally fine. Nothing spectacular nor terrible. Location is great for walking to bars and restaurants and shops. Room was clean but outdated. The train station is directly behind the hotel and we left our window cracked for sleeping after getting in late from the airport. We were startled awake late in the night by train whistles seemingly in our room. We got a chuckle out of it but if you're looking for something quieter...this is not it. Housekeeping was strange at best. Beds were made, coffee replenished, but bar soap was actually removed and empty Kleenex box never replaced. Likely that it is a short staffing issue like everywhere else. Not a big deal but the place does give off a sense of neglect. I will try a different hotel for my next visit. read more

So I'm staying at this hotel currently, as I'm writing this review. I am in room 204 which is on the bottom floor on the east side. I have MANY good things to say about this hotel, but one single big complaint about my room in particular. I would have happily rated this hotel 5 stars, but the loud noise coming from the furnace in the kitchen is so distracting that I accidently clicked 4 stars instead. In Alaska, in the winter, a working furnace is a necessity and it's a shame that this one is so dang LOUD. Aside from the loud machine buzzing off to my left, this hotel is fantastic. It's a quaint little hotel located a few blocks off of Anchorage's 'main drag' where all of the tourist shops, restaurants, and night life places reside. It's in a nice quiet area with gorgeous views overlooking the mountains that surround the city and the Cook Inlet (bay). You're walking distance from everything downtown Anchorage has to offer, yet secluded enough to not be ridden with constant noise and traffic while you're relaxing in your hotel room. But how are the rooms? Every room in this hotel is a suite. I am staying in the queen size suite and I'm very impressed. The place is decorated in traditional hotel fashion and everything seems very well-maintained. There is a hole in the wall in the bedroom- but when I approached the front desk about it they apologized and even offered to change me to another room. I declined- a small hole in the wall isn't going to deter me, and if nothing else I was very impressed with the efficiency in which the hotel staff tried to accommodate me when I mentioned a problem (I'm sure if I complained about the loud furnace- they'd do the same thing). The suite is very roomy. I paid $110 for one night (including tax and all additional fees). With that price I got a large apartment-style room. There is a bedroom with a queen size bed, built-in dresser, end tables, clock, and flat screen TV. There is also a living room with a large desk in the corner, sofa, chair, armoire, and another flat screen TV. Off to the side of the living room is the kitchenette area complete with a small kitchen table with two chairs, a fridge, an oven, a dish washer, sink, coffee maker, toaster, and microwave. The kitchen is stocked with all items needed to cook comfortable including pots, pans, dinnerware, silverware, mixing spoon, spatula, and a can opener. Impressive! The bathroom is fairly large with a nicely sized bathtub with a built in shower and a vanity area. This room alone is very big and could comfortable fit a group of 3 to 5 people. A GREAT hotel for families and small adult groups. The hotel is very comfortable, tastefully decorated, and just a genuinely nice place to sit and relax (once that furnace shuts off for a minute!). Overall, I'm very impressed with this hotel and for the price would highly recommend it to anyone traveling to Anchorage and wanting to stay in the downtown area. read more

Good price for a suite, and the location was good. We had everything we needed, and the staffperson who checked us in was very nice. Their bath towels are excellent--fluffy and soft. The bed was very comfortable as well. Parking was not immediately obvious, and they are particularly strict about check-in time (although they will keep your bags if you arrive early)--when we arrived early, the staffperson who told us to come back at 4P was a little surly. read more

This is a boutique hotel that is the closest and most convenient to the train station. You are able to walk from your train to the hotel in less than 5 minutes. You will have to cart your luggage up a flight of covered outdoor stairs (approximately 50 stairs) but it's not too strenuous or far. The staff is on site 24/7. There is free wifi, parking, and snacks available in the lobby (seasonal fruit all day and fresh baked cookies in the evening). The hotel offers a breakfast snack bag that is delivered to your door in the morning if you leave a voucher hanging from your door. The snack currently consists of a juice box, granola bar, yogurt and instant oatmeal. This is an all suite hotel and a very good value for the rates. You get a full size fridge, stove and oven, microwave, toaster, dishwasher, dishes, silverware, a pot and pan, and cooking utensils. There is on site laundry for $1.50 per machine. The hotel has a small business center as well. The staff is friendly and caters to their guests needs, the hotel is clean and comfortable. You are within walking distance of all downtown attractions and city maps are available along with excellent suggestions given by staff. Anchorage has Uber, Lyft, Yellow Cab, and city buses available for transportation. There is no fitness center and no airport shuttle. The train horns blast 24/7. If you are facing the water it is extremely loud all night long. If you fall asleep then a horn wakes you up and it goes on all night. I am exhausted. read more

Location is great, its just off to the side of the more busier areas and within walking distance to the Train Station, Tony Knowles Coastal Trail, and some restaurants and breweries. Would have given it 5 stars but the bathroom sink broke one night and was stuck on the on position, after about 1.5 hours it was fixed by maintenance, it took longer since they had to come after hours 30 min away. Also make sure you bring ear plugs and an eye mask, you hear lots of birds (which is nice when your not sleeping) and the curtains don't block out the sun at the bottom so well, their a bit short. We were there in June so it basically never gets dark. I definitely recommend the hotel it is a great spot to start your adventure. read more

Upon our travel to the hotel, our cab driver informed us that this hotel used to be an apartment building, that since turned into a hotel. Mind you it was in the wee hours of the morning that we found ourselves waiting for someone to answer the doorbell caller thingy. It was cold, slightly drizzling and we were exhausted from our flight. While waiting, someone joined us at the front door. Apparently, this person knew the clerk and was calling via cell phone. I think we were only outside for oh about 5 minutes til we were let in by some people who were staying there. The entrance slightly small and the hallways, elevators, stairwell too. However, it had a nice homey feeling. The front clerk apologized for the wait and was very helpful. The room was really comfortable. It was a home away from home. Separate room that had a queen (possibly) size bed, and a built in tv/drawer/closet built into what was a closet. The sitting area with the usual tv/dresser cabinet, couch that was a pullout and small kitchenette. The room was a corner with the view of the Alaska Railroad station. What I liked most about it was the breakfast they served, more like Continental. It was really cute. The form you fill out just asks for room # and how many people and place it on the door knob. They make their rounds picking them up. I'm not sure when they started but at 7am there's a bag of goodies hanging on the doorway. It consisted for bear-claws, bagels and cream cheese, juice, milk, apple sauce or fruit. It was very thoughtful and creative thing to do. Also, the hotel wasn't too far away from the conference that we were attending. That was a plus. read more

Once you get over the general sticker shock associated with being in Alaska, you realize that the Grand Hotel is one of the best deals you're likely to find. Great customer service, lovely, large room and there is no hint of "that musty smell" that a previous reviewer noted. It's a very nice not-a-chain hotel. I've rated it as pricey, however, that's in comparison to the lower 48. It's actually a bargain compared to its Anchorage peers. The location is great - walking distance to some fine restaurants, watering holes and the Anchorage Museum as well as the train station. BTW - the trains are barely noticeable, but Anchorage nightlife can be fairly noisy - but none of that was in the hotel. read more

I liked this place. It was one of those older hotels that was around before the earthquake, and it's got this old, "ya know, it's Alaska, but it's still elegant" feel to it. Very, very old school hotel, and it wasn't a bad deal for what I got. The bed was comfortable, the shower hot and the television a plasma even if they didn't have HD. It did have this musty smell to it, but I didn't care: that's what you are supposed to get in a place like that. It was centrally located to all of the bars I liked going to, close enough to the client I could walk, the best restaurants in downtown were RIGHT THERE, and I was stumbling distance from the Pioneer Bar, which is always a plus. When I had problems with the WiFi, they moved me to another room so I had no problems. Really, one of the best customer service experiences I've ever had. read more

The good stuff: Room was huge and comfortable (might have been a suite), with fridge, stove top, oven, and sink in kitchenette. Good price (even by my "lower 48" standards) Walkable distance to tourist attractions, bike rentals, reindeer sausage vendors, souvenirs, post office, many restaurants, and bike trail. We walked ALL over the tourist district and loved it! Walking distance to train station, easy trip even for the luggage-loaded. The wifi was difficult to connect to, but worked well from our 2nd story room once we had it set up. The not so good: The trains are frequent and LOUD - I grew up near Chicago and am used to trains, so I thought I could handle it, but no... they were quite loud. People in front of the hotel are also LOUD - I never figured out what it is about the front of this hotel that necessitates so much yelling, but many groups of people came and went noisily. There are no grocery or pharmacy stores nearby. I needed a variety of liquids that I didn't fly in with (soaps, shampoos, hairspray, etc) but ended up biking a few miles to a Carr's just to find simple toiletries. Overall, my husband and I enjoyed our stay here and thought it was cool to stay at a place that felt "local" instead of some generic chain hotel. read more

We stayed here for two nights while in Anchorage. I was unaware there was not AC throughout the hotel. Our room was 80 F when we checked in and all customer service could do was provide an additional box fan. We slept with the windows open as they suggested, which helped minimally since we were on the 5th floor, and with our room being backed up against the train depot, we were awakened constantly with train horns. Since I booked through Priceline at a nonrefundable rate, we were stuck for the 2nd night as management refused to cancel our reservation. It was clean and located downtown which was a plus, but I would never recommend anyone staying here during the warmer months. read more

Horrible cancellation policy. Flight from Kodiak was canceled and the manager would not budge from their 48 hour cancellation policy. When I asked to speak with someone else, he said he was it and he wrote the cancellation policy. Pretty messed up considering flights from Kodiak are often delayed. This is a great small hotel with walking distance to everything downtown i.e.restaurants and shopping. I was very suprised how nice the suite was with the kitchenette. There is no AC in the building so you use your windows. August isn't so hot so it was perfect. It has everything you need except no dish soap and sponge. It was missing the pots and pans listed on their inventory list so they went and brought it to me. To my surprise, dirty dishes in the dishwasher from the previous tenant. Their continental breakfast consists of a bag delivered to your door every morning of oatmeal, bagel, cream cheese, juice box, and a granola bar. Just enough food for 2 people but that's for 1. Staff is very friendly and they bake cookies every night so it fills the halls. Parking is very close and depending on your stay, you have to get a parking pass daily or a supplied with a monthly one. Previous reviews mentioned the loud noise from the train station, but that didn't bother me at all. You hear it all over downtown. Free internet and a tv in the living room and bedroom. I had a comfortable stay but only wished they were more detailed with their cleaning and kitchen inventory. If it wasn't for that, I would give 4 stars. read more

Walking distance to downtown which could save a lot of money on travel / cabs. But it is right next to the rail depot. During the entire night - every hour or 2 we heard the train's whistle and honk. For a light sleeper like me - was quite hard to sleep. Breakfast: 4 stars. They promptly provided the breakfast at 7 am at your door which was convenient. WARNING: If you stay here you will have trains come through ALL NIGHT every hour and blow their incredibly LOUD horns multiple times. Staying here was a nightmare and we got NO SLEEP. In addition we booked 2 queen beds but what we got was a queen bed and a pullout couch. That's their version of 2 queen beds?! They also have a list in each room that inventories each item in the room and how much you'll be charged if it's gone. It also specifies if you leave a dish in the sink, they'll charge you $30. They also keep a $100 deposit on your room for if you leave it "extra dirty." We didn't leave it extra dirty and didn't get charged the $100 but have never heard of such a thing and who determines what is "extra dirty?" Sounds extra shady! WOULD NOT RECOMMEND THIS HOTEL IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR A RELAXING, RESTFUL, HEADACHE-FREE STAY! read more

We arrived to the Grand and the front desk was helpful, she gave me a map of downtown that we used all the time. Our room was very large, we were a little apprehensive about it being on the bottom floor but it worked out well for us, we didn't have any loud footsteps above us or anything like that. I figured top floors are smoking floors. They give you little breakfast baggies in the morning if you request it. For us it was very helpful because we drove a lot looking for a house and a granola bar would tide us over until we got somewhere to eat. Back to the room, it had a little kitchen w/ microwave, dishes and refrigerator. so when we had leftovers from restaurants it came in handy. Overall we had a good experience with them read more

At first I wasn't impressed by this place. It was expensive and looked slightly outdated. Then I got used to Alaskan outrageous prices-and realized what a great deal this place is. You get a full one bedroom apartment, Newspaper and a breakfast delivered to your door each am (the breakfast is basically cereal bars, apple juice, oatmeal, bagel stuff like that. ) They put out fresh yummy cookies every night for the guest! The bad- The train station is right behind them-and if you are a light sleeper or a normal sleeper-ask for a room in the front of the hotel. Also the housekeeper was horrible. -the place was always clean but she did bare minimum to the rooms between nights. Pulled up the blankets, but did not make the beds, changed towels or hung them. That's all. The location is great! I would still go back there, especially if I had children staying with me because of the separate rooms. read more

i was shocked at how big the room was! i don't know if all rooms are like this (with a kitchenette, separate bedroom, living room)..but i really loved the fact that it felt more "homey" than all the other hotels. bathroom was a bit small..but nothing to complain about. kitchenette had pots/pans/utensils/full fridge and freezer/plates/cups...but no dishwashing soap or sponge. my only complaint would have to be the way continental breakfast is served. you check if you would like it or not on a door hanger and leave it outside your door for someone to come by the next morning and drop it in front of the doorstep. they don't have a lobby or an actual room for the breakfast, so they deliver it to you. manageable..but breakfast was lame, consisting of plain bagel, cream cheese, breakfast bar, apple and can of apple juice. besides the breakfast, everything else is great..and it's definitely a short walk from the train station to the hotel (5 mins). short walk to the heart of downtown as well. the front desk even had cookies and apples for guests to take (if they aren't all gone by the time you check in) i also used their washer/dryer ($1.50 a load to wash or dry) and they sell detergent for about a dollar something. i definitely i agree it was a great price. it was the cheapest of all the hotels i've stayed at in alaska, and definitely was the best choice. read more

Anchorage Grand made me feel right at home in AK. Smack dab in downtown Anchorage, it was nearby to everything. Smelling fresh baked cookies as soon as you walk in reminds you of home. The layout of the rooms, complete w/ living room & eat-in kitchen allowed me to entertain guests & cook for them as well as myself during my 2 week stay. Front desk attendants have always been helpful, happy & eager to assist with all of my needs. I have stayed there multiple times & never had a bad experience. Do not stay here! They are thieves! Put privacy on the door and our room was half cleaned anyways. When questioned they said I must have put the wrong side on the door for room to be serviced. This happened twice. The privacy sign was put up everyday. After checking out my son realized two days later that part of his military uniform was missing. I know we didn't leave it in the room when we checked out, but I called anyway to see if we did leave it in the room. I was told nothing was put in lost and found but to call back the next day. I called the next day and then the next day and then the next day still they didn't have anything in lost and found or at the front desk. After the third day i spoke with Sean who is completely rude right off the bat and very defensive about the whole situation. After calling the Anchorage Police Department I called Sean back and told him that the police would be contacting him on Monday if it was not found by this weekend. I called back Saturday evening and all of a sudden our item turned up in the break room. The manager called me back Saturday evening before my son got there to pick up his military uniform item and told me it was found. She had no prior knowledge of the situation before now. She to became defensive when I explained what had happened. Bottom line is these people will steal and lie. The corporate office is no better completely rude and arrogant. read more

After reading all of the positive reviews on trip advisor, I decided to book this place for our after cruise overnighter. When I arrived at the hotel, I knew right away that I was going to be disappointed before even walking in. The pinkish color building really needs to be updated. I don't know if I walked in the wrong door, but I didn't see any other door besides the one off the street. Right when I walked in, there were stairs leading to the 2nd and 3rd floors. It took me a while trying to find out where the lobby was. There are signs that point you in the right direction, but when I went down to the second floor where the sign says hotel lobby pointing to a door, I wasn't sure if it was a joke or if this was actually the lobby door. The door was closed so it looked exactly like a door for a guest room. Thinking the sign was incorrect, I decided to go down to the first floor to see if maybe the lobby was there. I was wrong. So I went back upstairs and the door was miraculously opened. I walked right in and checked in. George the attendant was very nice and told me that he used to live in Southern California and his wife was from East LA. What a coincidence since I'm from the LA area. Never could understand why anyone would want to leave LA and move all the way up to Anchorage. They have complimentary fresh baked chocolate cookies and apples at the front desk for guests. There is also a free parking lot next door in the a dirt lot. We had to drag our luggage up to the 3rd floor in order to take the elevator up to our room. The carpeting and walls are very old and really needs to be updated. The elevator is super slow and will only fit about 2 people with luggage. Walking down the hallway to our room, I noticed how dirty and grimy the carpet was. Opened up the door and an odor hit me in the face. Can't really explain what it is exactly, but it definitely smelled old. The room was super warm and I went straight to the thermostat to turn on the ac. Guess what, this hotel does not have an ac unit. You will either have to use the fan that's in the closet or open up the windows that have no screens on them. So, I guess you can pick your poison here. Our view was of a backyard that has weeds and grass growing wild. Didn't feel comfortable leaving the windows open since I don't know what will fly in or crawl in while we were sleeping. There was a bedroom separating it from the living room. The room is definitely bigger than most typical hotel rooms. So that's a plus, but I don't know if it's a big plus since the carpet and couches didn't look clean. Even though the couch didn't have any odor to it, it just didn't look clean due to the decor of the couch. The design reminded me of a cheap motel comforter. The bathroom was small but functional. There was a full kitchen with a microwave, full size fridge and a sink. There was a small dining table and I believe there were dishes in the cupboards. I was too afraid to open up the cupboards since I wasn't sure if there was a family of mice or other vermin living in there. The one saving grace was the bed. I am so thankful that the sheets were white and felt soft to the touch. The sheets looked like something you would get at a Sheraton or Hilton. Can't really say if it's the same quality, but I'm glad it's white and wasn't of a cheap motel quality. I did notice that the window in the bedroom had a screen on it so we left it opened for the whole night. Only problem with that is that the train runs throughout the night and we can hear it running and whistling every now and then. The hotel is located about a block away from the Hilton. It's within walking distance to restaurants and shopping. On Saturdays, the parking lot across the street holds an open air flea market. I am not very happy paying $159 for a one night stay through Expedia. But I would have been very upset paying their going rate of $200 if I didn't plan ahead of time. Overall, I would never want to stay here again if I am in Anchorage. Actually, I really wanted to cancel my reservation and book at the Sheraton as there was a special that day for $153. But I thought I would just buck up and stay the night. If you take a cab to or from the airport, it will run you about $20. read more

They offered free breakfast that you could prepare in the kitchen of the room. It's set up like a one bedroom apartment with mini kitchen. Stayed a total of 4 nights here and was pretty happy with it. Very nice that there was a kitchen in the room, allowed us to save money on food while we were there. The breakfast that they offered was great for packing on a hike, juice boxes, granola bars and bagels. We had 2 rooms between our group and it was nice that we were able to open doors in between the two. The staff were very nice and we were able to store our bags for a late checkout on the day we left. My only complaint is the hotel seems a little old and in need of some sprucing up. read more

It is literally right across the street from the train station. We picked this place because we weren't go to have a car in Anchorage and only staying one night. The place is CLEAN! The room was spacious! The breakfast they provide for you to take in the morning was very generous. Truthfully, there are lots of hotels to choose from near the train depot but I thought I really got a deal because the price was more than reasonable and felt so luxurious. Why pay more if you can get the same thing at a cheaper price? I would definitely stay here again. The noise factor didn't bother us. We barely heard it. We stayed on the first floor suite facing the train depot. *Don't carry your luggage up the stairs to the hotel from the train depot. Go around the curve of the block. read more

I stayed here for 3 nights in February. The room was clean and comfortable. It was very quiet, and the location was great. The negative points came when I got quite ill on my last night there. I called in the morning to inquire about checking out later than 11am, as I didn't need to be at the airport until 3:30pm. I explained that I was sick. I was told I could stay until 11:30, but after that would be a full night's charge. Great. Let me say that I never saw another person the entire time I was there, so it wasn't a matter of needing the room. If it was a matter of housekeeping, they could have easily cleaned it first thing the next morning. Just wasn't the customer service that would have been professional and gracious. HOWEVER, the customer service of the person when I checked in was GREAT. read more

Very convenient to the train station and a reasonable walk to downtown, though there's not very much within a block or two. My friends and I had the WORST reception we've ever had to endure. We arrived after midnight, 4 girls in Alaska and found ourselves waiting for someone to answer the doorbell outside the hotel, it was cold, drizzling and we were exhausted from our flight. The receptionist finally let us in and rudely advised us that all the rooms were booked for the night. We explained that we had a reservation and gave her the confirmation number. She proceeded to verify the reservation and to her surprise found that we indeed had made a reservation for that night, however, she informed us that the hotel manager Kimo had apparently double booked it. We told the receptionist that we had nowhere else to stay and asked her to contact her manager. Upon our request she called Kimo and explained the situation, she turned the phone to us and Kimo the manager told us that we needed to leave the premises because the hotel is booked, and we were harassing the receptionist, if we did not leave he would call the local police. We told him to go ahead and call the police because someone needs to straighten things out and we were not about to step outside into the cold, drizzly night. After a drawn out phone argument he instructed the receptionist call the surrounding hotels and find us a new accommodation. I would NOT RECOMMEND this HOTEL to anyone even if its affordable.
