Furniture drawers were hard to open and the other cabinet doors ..well there was no other door. Place is outdated.

Place is outdated, but staff was friendly. Cabinet drawers broken. Nice comfy bed spread.

I stayed at the Qupqugiaq Inn, and while it wasn't the Ritz Carlton, it was far from what I have seen in the horror stories from the reviews here, so I wonder if those were temporary things that didn't get cleaned up fast enough. The Qupqugiaq has a seemingly small staff, so I could see that being the case. When I stayed at the Qupqugiaq Inn, it was clean and comfortable. The exterior is half modern and half natural, with an office on top of columns of wood tree trunks. A cool looking building to pull up to. The room we booked was cute and cozy, with two beds, nice quilts, and heavy wooden furniture, making it seem like a grandma's guest house (in a good way). There is a private bathroom that was clean and well appointed. We were there at the beginning of the midnight sun, and our room featured blackout curtains which was definitely a necessity to not have the sun blasting in our room at 3am, so I was happy about that! Our only issue here was that it is on a busy street, and our room was open to the ground floor/parking area, and we did have one person walking by, come knocking on our door late at night randomly, which was scary but we just didn't answer and made sure the door was locked. This can happen anytime and anywhere, so I don't blame Qupqugiaq, just be aware and make sure your door is locked if it is open out to where the public walks by. Overall, this is definitely a budget hotel, but it's in a good area of town to get to many things, and you will most likely enjoy your stay even if it's just a place to sleep at night between exploring.

It was clean and the staff was nice. Darker curtains are needed because of the light and we would have liked less noise from the outside road. Bring eye masks and heavy duty earplugs. Good value overall! It was very unique and had a home type feeling!

    More stains

Do not put your life in danger staying at this inn. Very sketchy people lurking around, building doesn't stay locked at night. There's a space in-between my door and the frame and you can see in and out of the room. Dresser is missing bottom of the drawers, exposed wires and wall plugs. Giants cracks in ceilings and walls. Exposed broken glass on entry doors. Shared bathrooms and showers that do not get cleaned. EXTREMELY DIRTY beds and sheets. Mattress is outdated and covered in nasty stains and holes. Entire building smells terrible and there is flies and little gnats all throughout the building. Constant noise and people doing weird things outside of my window at 2am. No one at the front desk when you want to check in, and a sign that reads be right back, call this number for assistance and then the number is to the business phone sitting right in front of me ‍‍ This place was a disaster and I was only stressed and feared for my life my entire stay. Do not stay here unless you want to get robbed or k!lled

    bed bug bites

I was supposed to have 2 beds in room. Only had one. Room was stuffy and I totally got bed bug bites all over me

I stayed here for 5 nights Room 1 The room is simple 2 beds mounted tv what more do you need My only issue with this place was the staff RUDE!! They have a entire list of rules that they take pretty seriously The lady that runs the place was the most unpleasant person I met in Alaska!! I wish her the best Take my advise and stay somewhere else! If I could give 0 stars I would.

View from the room... Nice auto repAir shop

I think I relearned a lesson this trip on the "value" received at discount hotels like this... It's out of the way of nearly everything - so a car is a requirement. (I like to use public transit when in a new city but that didn't work here in Anchorage). Location is important when visiting a new city and this is about 10 minutes from anything. The front desk is unstaffed until 10 am. Needed a bandage and went to the "office" and a guest who's some sort of volunteer host said he couldn't go behind the desk, but offered to run across the street to a market. The room was cold (huh! Anchorage cold - go figure). Never got the heat to work, a complaint I heard about another room. I asked the first night for a second blanket... And asked again the second night... I was going to ask a third time but instead bought a blanket at a tourist shop and was warm enough. They are I guess remodeling and upgrading but the work is shoddy. Nicely tiled shower but no curtain to keep the floor dry. The finishing work has gaps in door frames, misaligned cuts for door latches. I just felt shoddy. I've stayed at less desirable places... Heck, I camped out in a tent for what amounts to over a year and was more comfortable. Motel 6 rates a 3-star rating and this isn't that nice. They didn't clean the room since the first day. Trash not emptied. Cheap white rough towels, two provided to shower... No other linens (no hand towel, no wash cloth). Bring your own soap and shampoo, none filled in the container jars in the bathroom. Towels also had rips and holes. Finally learned how to turn on the TV - hint, even though its cable, set it for air reception to get the channels. Anchorage gets dark late (9 pm in August). Bring sleep shades if you go to bed earlier. We asked for something to darken the room and the result was a comedy of staff with thumb tacks and sheets. I am sure I could have found a worse place - didn't have any crack whores or homeless hanging... No, wait, I went to the lobby yesterday morning and someone was sleeping on the couch. Construction across the street starts at 7 am six days a week. Busy street traffic also, so take a room at the back side of the hotel.

I feel like Im extending myself by giving 1 star but it is for the night employee who met me at 2:30 am to let me into my room and carried my suitcase up the stairs. And well it was a roof over my head. Arrangements: My flight was changed on me last minute and I would not arrive until 230am. I needed a place to stay for 5-6 hours before a friend picked me up. So the price was better for that time frame. Earlier in the day I called the hotel to notify them I was arriving late. The lady who answered said "We will TRY to have someone meet you". That wasnt comforting. Arrival: I caught a Lyft to my hotel; the gentleman was very kind and told me "Please be-careful in this area. It is rough". I thought he was exaggerating. But as I got out of my Lyft, the desk clerk that was meeting me was also throwing out 6 people who were smoking crack on the premises. A lot of yelling was going on. I didnt know if I was to check in at the office or where to go. But I walked up the back stairs and went to my room that I was directed to. I wasnt asked for my ID to check in or verification. The room: The place just smelled awful- like body oder/sweat. It had a full sized bed, a TV, rough looking dresser, a sink, mirror, table and two dirty chairs. And random drink spill-spots on the floor. Or I hope they were drink spills. And there was a hole was punched through the wall. I did not know that there was no bathroom in the room. It was located down the hall. After a full day of work and traveling 8 hours on a plane and going to a land where it doesnt get dark...i just wanted to sleep. But nope. All the crack heads that were chased out ended up on the street below my room window. So as I tried to air out my room, they were smoking and talking down below. All night! I slept in a stuffy, stinky room. I woke up around 4am with rap music blasting and the intense smell of weed. The TV was ok. It worked as did the sink. I was concerned that the smoke detector was just hanging from the ceiling too! The bathroom: This was a catastrophe. No toilet paper, garbage filled with used clothes, graffiti all over the door & shower, no soap and no door handle from the inside!! I wanted to take a shower but the separate shower didnt have a door handle/lock on it. So I resorted to the gross bathroom. I was super nervous because I was a single woman staying in this place with a lot of men...and the door wasnt secure. I took my chance and took the quickest shower ever. Conclusion: Would I book this room again? Nope. Would I spend the additional $50 to go to a chain hotel in Anchorage. Definitely. I feel this place could definitely be a hostel. See accompanying photos.

Private bath with double bed. This is before I checked out.

3.5/4 out of 5 This is not your typical inn (I realized later that some of it was a "hostel". I thought that this was probably the nicest hostel I have ever seen. It is more like an inn/hostel. However, you can have a private bath room too, which is what I had). The place has a quirky personality. Which I liked....for the most part. I live in Fairbanks and just came back from a visit to Anchorage . We picked this one because it was the cheapest with an overall decent review (and the only cheap one that was "clean"). We payed $95 a night for our particular room. It was in the summer, so everything decent was already booked. This was in midtown, so you still would need transportation to get downtown. I have to say though, I have never thought that the lobby host (or owner?) would have such an impression on its own place. I can't stress this more. When we first checked in (early August), the lady was very very nice- and chatty haha. She is definitely quirky and isn't afraid to show it, which is refreshing to see, at the same time, a little too much to see. She started off humorously saying "Yes, I know my shirt is inside out," and then as she was checking us in, our conversation went from something about her daughter having a lot of babies to something about how the "We haven't learned from the Earth yet" . She admits she is from the "flower child" age. INSIDE: Lobby It definitely left a weird impression. However, the lobby was too cute, with a computer and a cool wooden "tree" bookshelf. There is a long wooden table for guests to sit and read the newspaper and eat their breakfast. There is kitchen with everything: stove, microwave, refrigerator and a table to set up your breakfast. You have to share the kitchen and everything as like any hostel. I would say this is a mixture of an inn/bed and breakfast/hostel. INSIDE: Hallways and Rooms: Clean, small but not too small. Cozy for Hubby and I because we didn't need much since we had planned on spending most of our time in Anchorage out and about around town rather inside a hotel. You walk in to the windy hallways to your room. Our room was a private bath with a double bed. Small, yet cozy. Had a HUGE vintage sign of 8-footed polar bear with the name of their inn. There was a very small shelf that had a few books on it next to the window. TV was the old school TV's however we got great looking display and had cable. We got to watch the olympics!!! There is a wooden desk to the corner right next to your night side table. Bathroom: Small. Sink was outside of the bathroom. For someone who needs a big bathroom to take a while and get ready, not for you. Everything was clean. Pillows were so COMFY! They had the "memory foam" type pillows! OUTSIDE: Had a cute little patio, then below on the pavement had an outdoor set of a table and a few chairs under a shaded tent for any of the guests who want to spend a little time outside to smoke, read, etc. There was also a bench made out of tree branches. cool! CONS: Area: There were homeless people right across the street every time we would walk to a nearby store. We had a car, so the inn being midtown wasn't a huge deal, but it would have been nice to stay at at hotel downtown...However, being it was a summer in Anchorage, you don't have much luck if you don't planned far in advance. There were homeless people right across the street every time we would walk to a nearby store. We had a room right near the road so we would hear the cars go by pretty loudly through our opened windows (it was summer in Alaska, meaning no AC in a lot of places). OVERALL: Clean, cute, cheap, small, and quirky place to stay. Would stay again only if we couldn't find any place decent and needed a clean inn to stay at. However, would like a hotel closer to downtown. The lady left an impression that was "interesting". You kind of have to be in the mood for a place like this. If the lady was a little more to herself on some of her comments, I think we would have felt a little more at ease.

    Plenty of parking space.

The complimentary airport shuttle driver drove in total silence and ignored my greeting--a head nod or a quick recommendation about Anchorage would have gone a long way for a first impression. However, the second we walked into the lobby, the rest of the hotel staff completely changed our minds. The front desk team was incredible, allowing us to check in early and placing us on a high floor with a fantastic view that thrilled our kids. Throughout our stay, I was amazed by how hard this entire team works. Staff members were constantly cleaning, warmly greeting guests in the hallways, and accommodating every request with a smile. The breakfast crew in particular deserves major props: even when understaffed and facing impatient, demanding crowds, they handled the morning rush with grace, kindness, and patience. The setup is ideal for families--spacious rooms, immaculate cleanliness, and a central location that's just a quick drive to both the airport and downtown Anchorage.
