My daughter and I visited this Orangetheory while in Minneapolis to see Ed Sheeran. Absolutely loved the studio and the staff! Cam was our coach the first day and Nick the second. They were FANTASTIC. The best thing was the Pride flag in the lobby! I was very impressed with Minneapolis as I saw many Pride symbols around..I am a fierce mama bear to my LGBTQ son and this studio and city made me smile the whole time there! I also loved the history behind the building where the OTF is located. The building was a buggy assembly plant from 1913!

There you can pick where in the room you will be standing as the spots are painted on the ceiling. A bunch of us decided to take a lower body class so I was preparing to just do a bunch of lunges and hurting... lol The class started and the music began. The instructor took us through a warm up routine and then began to explain all the stations. There were 5-6 stations and we were to rotate between them. Yes, lounges were on the menu! Man, I was getting my butt kicked! each station had certain movements that focused on a certain body part and yes, I was sweating and crying lol. This lasted for about 45 minutes, once we were done with the stations twice, we rolled into a cool down period and eventually the class ended. What I liked about the class is that there was constant movement and you didn't get board with the movement. If I kept going to this class I know I would be in waaay better shape than I am but unfortunately, I don't live in town. I would try it out if you are visiting of living there. Its not too huge and intimate enough that you aren't lost in the crowd.

I'll leave the obligatory note that COVID is still a real threat to everyone's health, and I am glad Solcana is one of the businesses in Minneapolis that is truly taking it seriously. I've been a member of Solcana for nearly a year, and before COVID, the gym itself operated much like many crossfit gyms, with lots of classes, good equipment, and a friendly atmosphere. There has always been a strong focus here on equity and equality (at least as long as we have been members), and that's one of the main reasons why we chose to join. That focus has only become stronger over the past year, and I will touch on it a bit later. When COVID came around, Solcana, like all other gyms, shut down. I have to hand it to them though, they really tried hard to keep delivering a quality product to members, mostly through online classes. After the state started allowing gyms to open up on a limited basis, outdoor barbell classes began again. I've observed quite a few post-covid outdoor classes run by other gyms (whether out on a bike ride or in the park by my house), and many of them have seemed to completely ignore social distancing guidelines. Solcana has been completely different; all of the outdoor classes have felt really safe, with specific areas marked out for every athlete, small class sizes, and strict cleaning practices. This week, we were allowed to go back inside. However, that didn't mean Solcana relaxed their commitment to safety...if anything, they strengthened it. Indoor classes are even smaller, the distance between athletes has grown, masks are mandatory all of the time, and they are making sure everything is cleaned between classes (and there's at least an hour between classes). There are also still outdoor classes, depending on what type of workout you want and how safe you feel indoors. Even with all the new safety practices, the programming has been great, and we feel like we are getting a lot out of our membership, despite not being able to go as much as we were able to before (due to smaller class sizes and fewer classes, there is now a limit on classes per month, but that's completely understandable). Back to social justice...in the wake of the tragedy surrounding George Floyd, Solcana made an even stronger commitment to promoting equity and equality for all, and that's included doing even more with the BLM movement. The gym as de-affiliated from crossfit because of their comments/positions following the tragedy, but aside from not using that name any more (or giving them any money), the programming is pretty much exactly what you would expect from that type of gym. You will also find that this gym is extremely welcoming of all athletes, no matter who you are, what you look like, or how you identify, a trait not all CF gyms share. All in all, this is a wonderful, welcoming fitness community that promotes social justice AND takes COVID very seriously. The owner herself told me that she wants to be the safest gym in the Twin Cities, and so far, it seems they are succeeding.

This review is based on a one week free pass where I attended three different classes. I will say…read morethe instructors go out of their way to be super friendly and learn your name right away. Then while you were working out they will say things like "nice job Corey!" Also the other people attending class were very peppy and :-). The classes are 30 minutes which I didn't think was long enough. Part of the way they saved time was having you warm up while they showed you how to do the moves. That was way too much for my brain to handle, trying to learn 10 exercises while doing leg lifts. It was typically some sort of circuit format. One day it was do 10 reps of all 10 exercises the first time, eight reps the second time around and so on. Another day the exercise was timed for 40 seconds. Some of the exercises were very basic, do a Burpee, but others were more complicated and it was hard to remember exactly how to do. I will say, every time I asked for help, they were right over there. But this was a noon class with eight students, I can imagine it would be more difficult to get individual attention with 25 students. Also I noticed some of the people were doing the exercise wrong and they weren't being corrected. I was told they won't correct you if you're doing the exercise wrong but it still getting you a good exercise. This place seems to be targeted to people who are not in very good shape vs people who are already in shape. There are plenty of before and after pictures on the wall to attest to this. They do a before and after picture for their 21 day challenge. But I must say some of my friends who are going here (who are in shape) enjoy it very much. I went to another place where they had videos of the exercises and it was nice to be able to look up and see how to do the exercise. This place is $167 a month. You can try it out free for three days, they had a special try it out for a week for free, they also have $100 off your first month promo right now.
