The service is good overall here. The food is decent. We liked soy chicken 65 - it has a nice spicy kick. We felt the overall prices are more here - pretty much NYC prices.

This is a great spot if you're craving Indian food for lunch. The lunch specials are reasonably priced and there's quite a variety to choose from. If you happen to go during the week, you have your choice of seating and you don't really have to worry about crowds. The staff is very attentive and their service it's pretty wonderful even when the place is crowded. As for the ambience, the place is pretty modernly decorated and very clean. So if you happen to be in Montclair definitely popping into this establishment for a quick bite. I'm quite sure you'll enjoy it.

First time trying Basil Indian & Thai Grill! I ordered the non-veg dinner special for takeout for $35. I absolutely loved everything that it came with!! I've been trying to find a tikka masala that is not too oily, but also a bit thick and this is the one!! The dessert I chose was gulab jamun... never had it before.. it was the perfect sweet treat after a meal. I will definitely be back to try more!!

Came to Basil on a Friday night. The servers will really nice and welcoming. The restaurant is small and intimate so I wouldn't sit down with a large party. I loved the paintings all around the restaurant. For my appetizer I got tandoori wings which were very flavorful. As my entree I got butter chicken which comes with jasmine rice and garlic naan to accompany it. My friend got the chicken masala. For some reason they looked exactly the same but had a slight difference in taste. Overall the food was pretty good but i feel like ive had tastier butter chicken elsewhere. I did feel it was a little more pricier as well. We did get complimentary rice pudding which was nice. If you're in the area and are in the mood for it, I'd say give it a try for sure.

Pad Thai, Goat curry, Samosa chaat

This is a good concept, of mixing Thai and Indian. But then neither dishes tasted that authentic. The samosa chaat was good. Otherwise you have to go all the way to Edison or Parsippany or Manhattan for chaat. The goat curry & Pad Thai were ok. The goat curry didn't seem as flavorful as other Indian restaurants in the area like Jalwa. Pad Thai was on the sweet side, and there are other great Thai places in the area. The chef/owner came out, and he was nice. The service was fine. At first the restaurant was almost empty and it took a while to take our order, but the staff was nice I wouldn't go out of my way for this. Maybe they can improve or reduce the menu to their top dishes.

    Chicken vindaloo and roti.

We found this place because it was right in between where we both were and seemed like a good meeting place. Yelp reviews came through for me again This place is excellent and a hidden gem. I had the chicken vindaloo, chicken satay and Roti (with no butter). The vindaloo came out spicy as requested and was a generous helping. It came with well-made rice. The roti was perfect, warm and not greasy at all. The tear and texture were spot on, as was the flavor. We were very happy with our meals and also had great service. They were accommodating and took us for a very late lunch on a weekend and stayed open for us with a smile. Remember to tip well. We will be back.

Great local gem for spicy food! I ordered takeout on a Wednesday night and the 4 dishes came out pretty quickly. The woman who took my order was very friendly and even offered us water while we waited for our food to finish. There are dine in tables but they can fill up quickly at peak dining hours. The restaurant has a homey vibe. This time we only picked up Indian dishes: * Chicken Trio Kabab - 9/10 - I was worried it would be dry but all three types were pretty juicy, and you can taste the flavor of the herbs in the marinade. * Kashmiri Lamb Briyani - 8/10 - The rice is slightly dry, but good flavor on the meat and it's tender. * Goat Vindaloo - 8.5/10 - There were some small sharp bones, so you have to be careful eating it. The meat was basically falling off the bones because it was so tender and the stew was spicy and flavorful. * Chili Garlic Naan - 9/10 - Crispy and covered in garlic, so it's very flavorful Overall, I would come again to try their Thai dishes. Keep in mind that it's not an Indian and Thai fusion restaurant. They just serve both types of cuisines in separate dishes. The dishes also came with a flavorful green herb sauce and a tangy yogurt sauce.

The food here is awful and so is the service. I love Indian food and Thai food and this restaurant was a huge disappointment. We ordered both Thai and Indian entrees and were disappointed by both. The pad Thai noodles were overcooked and too soft, the lamb was tough, the lollipop chicken was mostly batter, and the cauliflower was so hard to bite through. My family came from queens to try this restaurant with me and it was a waste of our time and money. We didn't order anything more as we were highly disappointed.

I am always feel apprehensive when ordering from Multi Cuisine restaurants since there is a good chance that will mess up at least one order. Indian and Thai was a new combo for me, and the price was higher than what I am used to, especially Indian options, but still decided to give it a try. Thankfully, the food was pretty good, and the portion size kind of justified the price. I had ordered Biryani, Dhaba Chicken Curry, and Drunken Noodles. They all tasted good but I personally felt the Thai option tasted better than Indian. They tasted fine but something was missing. Seasoning was a tad bit bland, and Curry Sauce was not as thick as I would have liked it to be. I added some salt to bring out the flavors more but no such issues with the Noodles. Would definitely order again.

5/5 Stars - Jalwa in Montclair Is the Real Deal. And Then There's Nayan…read more There are restaurants you enjoy, and then there are restaurants that rearrange something in your brain. Jalwa in Montclair is the second kind. The space sets the tone immediately -- upscale but unpretentious, modern without being cold, the kind of room that makes you settle in and order one more thing. The menu is a love letter to Indian cuisine with a contemporary sensibility: bold, aromatic, deeply flavorful, and -- remarkably -- one of the most vegan-friendly dining experiences I've ever had anywhere. Not vegan-tolerant. Vegan-excellent. Modifications are handled with genuine expertise, and the results are full, satisfying, and never feel like a consolation prize. We started with crispy vegetable samosas packed with spiced potato and peas, and a couple of other appetizers that hit like a warm, fragrant wave. The dal was rich and creamy with flavor that built beautifully with every bite -- the kind of dish you find yourself thinking about days later. The vegetable biryani was fragrant and perfectly spiced. The curries, customized fully vegan, were outstanding. The garlic naan was soft, pillowy, and genuinely addictive. Every plate was generous, nothing was heavy or oily, and spice levels were adjusted exactly as requested. It was Indian cuisine firing on all cylinders. But I have to talk about Nayan. I have to. In twenty-something years of dining out, I have never -- not once -- encountered a server who so completely elevated a meal through sheer force of warmth, knowledge, and genuine care. From the moment Nayan greeted our table, it was clear we were in exceptional hands. He walked us through the vegan options with the fluency of someone who actually loves this food. His pairing suggestions were perfect -- every single one. He checked in at exactly the right moments, never hovering, always there. His energy was magnetic without being performative. He made us try dishes we would have skipped and we were grateful every time. This is not hyperbole: Nayan is one of the best front-of-house professionals I have ever encountered. He doesn't just serve a table -- he orchestrates an experience. Jalwa is lucky to have him, and whoever is in charge of promotions there should act fast, because someone with his talent, instinct, and people skills has a very bright future ahead -- in this industry or any other. If I could leave six stars, the sixth one would be just for him. Book a table at Jalwa. Ask for Nayan. Thank me later.

They have options to go for the mild choice if you can't do spice. This restaurant is situated within downtown Montclair - which is such a charming shopping block. We ordered: - honey chili lotus - saffron butter crab (generous portion size of crab)! - goat cheese naan - Goan fish curry Every dish was so good! The highlight was the saffron butter crab - that umami flavor was insane. The honey lotus was crispy and packed with flavor. The Goan fish curry was satisfying and not spicy at all which we both appreciated. I also enjoyed the 3 complimentary sauces on the table - none of them were too spicy. I highly recommend this place! The service was great as well.

The food was delicious and you can also change the spice levels on the food based on how you like it. There chettinaad chicken cutlets were delicious and I enjoyed the Pulav as well. I think for the amount of food that you get the prices a little bit on the pricier side and if you are expecting to be full from here that will not happen unless you're ordering a bunch of bread. Presentation was also great so I am giving this place a four star.

The chicken lollipop appetizer arrived looking the part - hot, crispy, and slightly zesty - but unfortunately didn't deliver on its visual promise. The dough was too thick and the meat rather rubbery, so the execution wasn't up to par. The mains, however, were redeeming. The gravy in the chicken tikka masala was delectable, and we enjoyed this as well as the kholapuri (which we asked for "extra spicy" but was just medium spicy to me - I'm sure others would disagree lol). My child loved his butter chicken. Both dishes featured substantial chunks of chicken. The saag paneer deserves to be mentioned for having a rough-chopped texture that I prefer, looking like actual spinach and not the zealously over-puréed green smoothie so many Indian restaurants inexplicably trot out. A touch over-salted, but otherwise tasty, and with an abundance of paneer. The lassi and garlic naan were both great. Portions are generous, and it's BYOB. Since Yemeni coffee and tea options aren't common for everyone, they take the time to explain the menu and answer questions, which I really appreciated. I tried the Jubani after the staff described it as a delicious light-roasted coffee packed with caffeine, but in reality, it tasted like bland cardamom water with absolutely no coffee flavor or body. It felt like I was just drinking hot spiced water. The atmosphere was also a major issue as there was no seating available whatsoever. The crowd was mostly of Middle Eastern descent and many were incredibly rude; people will bump right into you and not say a word. Even worse was the way some customers spoke to the workers, it was absolutely deplorable. Honestly, who raised you? It was uncomfortable to witness. The dessert selection was even worse. Most of what we ordered felt stale and old. The only thing worth eating was the bubble dessert with cheese because they actually toast it. We tried both the pistachio milk cake and the pistachio dream cake, and neither was impressive. The khattafi in the pistachio dream was the biggest letdown; it was so stale and bland I can't believe they actually put it out to sell when it was clearly weeks if not months old. The basboosa was also a disappointment, as it was a very small square of semolina cake for almost $5.
