Unfortunately, I got a bad knee injury during the training just less than a month out. I had to rest for weeks before trying again, and just realized that I could not continue. Hoping that I could recover soon, I did not cancel my membership as they have this "save time" allowing members to carry over the missing training time and extend after the contract expiration date. This was a HUGE mistake. In Mar 2023, I knew that I had to move out of Toronto in May due to a job change, and started contacting them for a refund by email and phone. I contacted them in the next month, none of my emails was replied, phone calls were rarely answered. In frustration, I went to the facility in person. To my dismay, the admin person accused me of showing up without an appointment, and their manager Joshua show no compassion after knowing my situation. Despite having trained for only five weeks in total, they refused to refund me for the entire duration, claiming that the "save time" policy didn't apply to refunds. They only agreed to refund me for the months after I left Toronto, which was four months since May. I have trained in multiple MMA gyms before, and I can confidently say that this is the worst one I've experienced. The only saving grace was the wonderful coaches, but they cannot compensate for the gym's predatory practices. I am utterly disappointed and feel cheated. I sincerely hope others do not make the same mistake I did and steer clear of this gym.

This is a predominantly Gi gym, though Professor offered to roll me in NoGi. I attended the morning class, and it's mainly nice, working class folks. I will say, I was the smallest by far... at 125 lbs and 5'0". However the warm up was great, and the rolls were great too. I'll be coming back if I'm ever in town! I'm looking forward to see how this place grows over time.

Masters Ken, Se'era, Ryan and Matthew were his initial instructors and were later joined by Masters Ho and Johl. It's been gratifying to watch my son's confidence grow over the years and can attribute it to his taking Taekwondo in a warm, friendly family-oriented environment. The main floor includes the reception area and the dojo, while the basement houses a small equipment area. The school offers a variety of classes, including karate, kobudo (weapons training), self-defence, and tai chi. I've been training here for 7 years and find Sensei's approach respectful, professional and works very well. Students are pushed to work hard and everyone progresses at their own pace. The atmosphere is welcoming but there's no place here for fooling around. You come to train. This style of karate is Gojo Ryu and focuses on kata. Sparring is a part of it but not the prime focus. We all have to work tomorrow so no one here is out to hurt you while sparring (like other dojos) in the city. Karate is not about fighting. Kids are expected to participate and show respect to Sensei and the other senior belts - just like they should. It's hard for some kids because they're not expected to show respect at home or at school. Sensei is often heard asking parents to not tell their kids to have fun, but rather to work hard. That very succinctly sums it up. HPMA has been here for 26 years (I'm not aware of any dojo in the city that has been in one location for that long) and going strong so I think bad reviewers here on yelp aren't seeing the whole picture. From the same instructors, I've seen them effectively engage children while being able to challenge older and more advanced students, often even within the same class. Having taken multiple classes of different levels with the same instructors, I can confidently say that they constantly try to teach us more and implement new methods of teaching. I've been around long enough to see the different dynamics between different mini 'generations' of students; most of which have been incredibly positive. The instructors have been able to foster a welcoming environment, and the students have done well to keep it that way.

Ohmi Sensei (7th Dan Renshi Iaido, 6th Dan Kendo) is the head of the dojo. He is very well known in Iaido and Kendo circles in Canada, and often travels to other schools in Canada and the USA to teach. Carole Sensei runs the dojo. She is 6th Dan, and has had the privilege to train under Haruna Sensei, Kim Taylor and Ohmi Sensei. The school is affiliated to the Canadian Kendo Federation (CKF) and the All Japan Kendo Federation (AJKF.) Training follows guidelines from Japan, updated yearly by visits from top ranking Iaido officials from Japan. The style taught is Muso Jikiden Eishin Ryu and Zen Ken Ren Iaido. Classes are held in the fantastic dojos provides by the Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre with the help of the Japanese Consulate. Highly recommended if you are interested in authentic, traditional Iaido.
