Bass Pro Shops was founded by Johnny Morris who grew up in the wilderness of Missouri hunting and fishing. He developed a passion for bass fishing and he did it professionally for 5 years. Johnny started Bass Pro Shops by selling tackle in 8 square feet in the back of his father liquor store. From those humble beginnings he has grown his business to 177 stores which welcomes 200 million visitors annually earning him the honorary title of "the Walt Disney of the outdoors". Johnny Morris is also a dedicated conservationist. When you check out you can round up your purchase to donate to their conservation fund. They also have a really generous return policy of 60 days as long as you keep your receipt. I stopped in here on the way to Chicago to pick up a pair of sunglasses but they only had high end brands. Not exactly what I had in my mind although everywhere I went the staff was very helpful. One thing I didn't like was how people throughout the store hassled me to sign up for their credit card to get a free hat and to sign up to won cash and free vacations. My friend ended up picking up a jacket on the clearance rack since she forgot hers. The centerpiece of the store is a large waterfall with native fish swimming in a tank at it's base. It is my dream to buy one of their kayaks one day. The guns and hunting gear hold the least interest for me. If I am lucky enough to see a deer in the wild the only thing I want to shoot it with is my camera. Other items they sell include hiking gear, grills, toys, snacks, camping gear, and even boats and ATV's from their own line. They offer concealed carry classes as well as many special events during the year including a Spring Fishing Classic, Fall Hunting Classic and a Go Outdoors event. Other events include boat shows, Family Summer Camp, and Santa's Wonderland. You can find events and dates by checking their events page. It is always fun to walk around a Bass Pro Shops. They really strive to have something for everyone. One other thing of note is that this stores restaurant recently closed. There was a sign for the auction. They plan to expand their retail space. Such a shame because the Bimini bread is the best. I hope this is not a trend for all of their locations. read more

I love going to the store and today, 6/19, I went and did get everything I was looking for with some help. Unfortunately something I did notice was as soon as I and my two friends entered the store, not all but most employees we encountered treated us with rude attitudes. I have been looking for a place forever and I had nowhere to go so I came to Portage Bass pro shop and they are so awesome I have a 30-ft camper and my truck is broke down I stayed a couple nights then I left and came back and the manager came up to me and said how long do you think you're going to be here very nice guy I said I'm trying to get out of here so anybody out there that is pulling an RV or a camper I highly and I mean highly recommend coming here they're so nice read more

This is my kids favorite place to go; my pocketbook, not so much. There's so much to see here and so much to buy. It's like a museum for those who love the outdoors. We're a fishing, boating, golf carting, Ariat boot and flannel wearing family and bass pro shops is a proud supporter of those endeavors. The clothing section is ginormous; encompassing men's, women's and children. The employees here are extra helpful and you can finance your next new toy right at the store through their in-house financing department. This is an incredible store and can be pricey but they do run sales; my favorite sales are flannel days! read more

I would encourage anyone thinking of ordering something online from Bass Pro, and having it shipped to a store reconsider. I ordered a fishing pole and reel on June 6 and on July 11 I finally had to cancel the order because it never showed up. They will not update you on the status of the delivery of the item until the item reaches the store. Customer service was nonexistent when I called to find out the status. They were unapologetic about the order never showing up. I never thought in Bass Pro customer service would be this poor. Really, really disappointed with the overall experience. read more

BPS! Stopped here on the way back from Michigan and was fascinated by the fireplace, the old South Bend fishing lures and memorabilia to the left of the entrance, and the HUGE store and taxidermy displays. Stopped in to get my son a soft bow case, check, procured! Headed to the lures department to get my fix. Asked a young clerk what Trout like, and he pointed out some nice Mepp's lures he said were successful and steered me away from trout dough and some other come ons. Bass Pro Shops just aquired Cabela's did you hear? Personally, I like Cabela's fishing selection better, but you can't beat this BPS for its huge selection of everything outdoors! read more

Buying a gun there is incredibly slow and their policies on trading in a gun was horrible. Apparently, they decided that they would not be taking in trades or buying guns during holiday season. They never advertised this on their website or even at their doors. So the hour trip to trade in something was a waste. Then there were two employees who could actually sell guns and about 7 of us wanting to buy guns. I was 3rd in line and it took 40 minute to actually get waited on. read more

Bass Pro is a necessary evil if you fish Salmon and Steelhead in Northern Indiana. They have most of the stuff...and there are hardly any locally owned mom and pop bait shops left to rely on. Bass Pro has almost anything you could possibly want for fishing though. I don't care for their house brand in general...although their "White River" fly goods seem to be ok. Prices are generally low, and it is a fun place to shop...giant aquariums and fish ponds, the shooting gallery are hits with my 12 yr old son. I have to say customer service is pretty good at Bass Pro. The staff is cheerful, friendly and actually have been helpful on the few occasions that I needed it. read more

So good... I'm speechless... 5 star food for a. 2-3 star price. Great setting, taking the wife out for her birthday. Word to the wise. Did not buy a firearms from these big box stores. They take your money do a background check and if it goes into delay they have you jump through a bunch of hoops on the internet to try to get it done. Zero customer service. I waited 35 days and nothing but crickets. I went back to the store got my refund. I went to Armory 219 in Valparaiso Indiana. Purchase the weapon went into delay and had the weapon in my hand within 5 days. Done deal. I recommend them to anybody who wants to get stuff done correctly and quickly. Thank you read more

My wife and I were very impressed with the store,the selection of Fishing,hunting,camping gear, and clothing. Then we were stopped by some young lady employee trying to sell vacation/time shares- I guess Bass Pro doesn't make enough through selling merchandise so they push these vacation timeshares. The long and short of it is she would not take no for an answer even after I told her several times we were not interested. We eventually just walked away from her while she was still talking, rude I know but it was the only way to escape their rabid saleswoman. Honestly basspro you need to lose these pushy timeshare pushers and just stick to selling an outdoor fishing and hunting merchandise. We might be back but it will be awhile read more

Overall, I was pretty disappointed with my dining experience at Bass Pro. The food was pretty dreadful considering they tried to pass off a reheated meal as fresh. Nice try. I ordered the Cajun chicken and pasta dish and what they brought to the table was quite dried out. The chicken was definitely sitting around a long time or reheated. I'm not an idiot. I know what reheated chicken looks like versus what fresh cooked chicken looks like. This was pretty dead. Our server apologized nine ways to Sunday which I get but she was so loud about it (shouting across the room from the other side of the bar) but thankfully there weren't many people there. The last thing I want is to be made a spectacle of because my meal was not up to even McD's standards. The kitchen manager came out and apologized as well and told us how that never happens and so on. I personally don't like that kind of treatment and feel like saying that puts the blame on the customer. I didn't overcook the chicken but your chefs did. I should not be made to feel like I did something wrong by bringing it to the staff's attention. My husband's meal was fine but I personally wouldn't eat there again if I didn't have to. Update: I'm guessing the couple of bites of old reheated chicken I tried gave me food poisoning to boot. Ughhh. read more

I broke my cardinal rule and instead of trying to find a local "Mom and Pop" place and purchased something from this behemoth of a "store." What can be said about governments grown too big can also be said about Faceless Corporations grown too big! Bureaucratic nightmares. I purchased a gun for skeet shooting and it jammed on first day. They don't allow returns on guns, which I knew and agreed to when purchasing, so they informed me they'd send it to manufacture to repair. Took one month to get back and I had to call several times to check its status, but finally picked it up today and it is still jammed. I understand they don't accept returns on guns, but there is an expectation that when you agree to that provision that the seller (Bass Pro) would not sell you faulty goods. Save yourself the grief and support your local small business and go elsewhere. read more

No paper towels, garbage cans over-flowing, and when I told the customer service counter, seemed like it was a bother to her and not a big deal. The Delayed gun policy is a complete joke and is not warranted! I purchased a firearm on May 9th and the company's Bass Ackward policy has decided to supersede the Brady Bill! I am legally able to purchase, own and conceal carry but because our Gvmt is overwhelmed and extremely too slow to personally look into a person's profile to send an email according to Bass Ackward Pro Shop, I've been waiting unnecessarily! When asked about the work, we were told that there was nothing they could do to help us and they also said- "Sorry." Huge place, I don't know how they keep all of it so clean. I came in and was immediately overwhelmed. I was greeted at the door and I asked where I would find what I was looking for. All I can say is that the salmon I ordered came literally frosted with some strange cheese sauce (that was nowhere in the description for the dish on the menu) and when I asked our server what type of oysters they had she told me she would check...she returned to inform us that "it said on the can 'fresh shucked'." Maybe it's just me but the staff here is horrible. I was there yesterday mid day with not another customer anywhere around. I walked up to the gun counter where there were 3 guys that worked there standing & talking about some DUI case. I stood in front of them for at least 30 seconds without so much as a hello.. Then one of them looked at me as if I was bothering him and said (did you need something) I asked a question that of course he didn't know the answer to. This is not the 1st time I have had a problem at this store with rude and lazy workers but it will be the last. read more

This restaurant is so much more than I expected, being in Bass Pro Shop I expected it to be low class I guess but this is the closest thing I've seen to fine dining in our area. The food is incredible if a bit pricey I spent 50 USD including the tip for an appetizer, entrée, drink and dessert. I ordered the alligator appetizer the Buffalo burger and the key lime pie. The alligator comes with a sauce made with cream cheese jalapeño and other things but it was really good. The Buffalo was good it's a lot leaner than beef so if you like low fat beef you will love the Buffalo. The key lime pie was an experience more than a dessert lol not in a bad way. The Remora Rum Runner was one of the best drinks I've had in ages I would recommend it to anyone who tries this establishment. I almost forgot the bread they serve before the meal is like sugar bread it's hard to explain but the bread and the rum runner is worth the trip themselves. read more

This is a mecca for hunters and fisherman, but for hikers and campers not so much. I mean they have the basics for a family camping trip or a weekend at turkey run with some friends but if you are planning a serious camping/hiking trip I suggest Cabellas or better yet REI. I do love the women's clothing selection here and it is way lower then the other out doors stores. Their shoe department is also pretty awesome and so is the restaurant they have there. It's really worth even a little day trip to take your family to go look at the amazing giant aquarium they have and all the the indoor waterfall and taxidermy animals. I had a good experience here. My son is into fishing (I'm not so much) and was looking for a "grown up" rod and reel for his 13th birthday. I did a little research before stopping in. The guy behind the counter took time to answer my questions and asked a few of his own to help me find the appropriate equipment. He was an avid fisherman himself and appeared genuinely pleased to help someone else get into the sport. Selection in other departments seemed good and staff was friendly. Well, our visits to Bass Pro Shops are numbered, it is normal for us to shop at BPS...at least 3 times a month. The issues with animals, are getting out of hand (1) St. Bernard snorting and huffing and puffing when I started to walk to the bathroom. (2) German Shepard leading a woman aroundi upstairs by the shoes (3) The ultimate one, my husband just told me that on Saturday, around 11ish our daughter and grandson where upstairs lookin and they did buy a pair of shoes and while walking towards the BB guns they caught wind of poop, while walking thru the gun department they saw POOP all over the floor a few store associates were aware of the problem but none cleaned up the mess, which someone had stepped in, lucky I was not with that day and witnessed that mess. read more

This review is for the restaurant/bar. One star for the awesome gargantuan fish tank bar setting. Negative zero stars for service. Sat at the bar and waited 20 minutes for a beer (after ordering) while the bartender refilled the olives in the bar pick up tray, went to back for help to open jar, and waited on others. Watched couple next to us walk out after waiting for 45 minutes for food and then the bartender asking what they ordered-never put order in and never checked in with them while we were sitting there. Great store and selection. However, there was little to no expertise in the rod and reel section. The kid that was working the counter had no experience and could not offer any advice. Once he called another worker over it help, he was rude and simply did not want to help. He grabbed a package reel hanging on the shelf and simply said this is all I can and will do for you. Worse customer service at a Bass Pro. Hoping the one in Bolingbrook will be better. read more
