This is a little museum for anyone visiting Smithville to check out. The place is only room size but its good just to get a feel for the history of this small little texas town. It brings back all the good-nature qualities of a small American town, nice people, friendly folks, clean area and quiet setting. There is a playground right next to it for the children to play at. The location is at the T-square end of the town's mainstreet. You can literally visit the museum and chamber of commerce and then walk down main street and visit a few shops. There is also a skatepark down the street to the left of this place. Everything is very quiet, minus the trains moving along the tracks behind this place but other than that, you don't evey have to worry about traffic in this area. If your looking for a fun road trip with no problems, drive on over to Smithville and give them your business and tell them I said, "Hello!" :-)

This state historical site is such a cool place. There is a beautiful overlook, and the grounds themselves are very well maintained. Only $5 per person for admission and leashed dogs are welcome. The Visitor Center has a few displays of relics that you won't want to miss! I do recommend wearing good shoes and carrying water if you are planning to walk down to the brewery. After paying a small fee to enter, we parked. The visitor's center has a small museum where you can learn all about the history of the park. It's a good way to kick things off. From there, you can hike around the park. Beyond getting a workout, you come across historical markers and other goodies along the way. Brewery ruins, a home, a statue, and more. You'll learn even more through this experience. I love these types of hikes: where you simultaneously learn and get a workout in.

We brought our mother along to enjoy, and she quickly made friends. There is a lovely market filled with fresh produce, plus other local goods. Everyone was friendly, and helpful. We sat in the 200s and had a great view of the events and musical performers. The beer vendors were plentiful. The line for refreshments, merchandise and bathroom were all short. The restrooms were cleaner than you'd expect for a rodeo. Outside, the carnival was setup in a way that there was plenty of room for people to walk around. The only downer is that it's a pretty good trek from parking to expo center but parking only cost $5. I don't know what other events are held here but based on this experience it's a good spot to be for spectators.

Overall, our experience was good…read more Our wedding date was July 3rd (2009), so I called way in advance to make sure that would work out since it was a Friday before a major holiday and we wanted to get married in the early afternoon. This ended up working out fine for Judge Benton Eskew's schedule, so I went ahead and set things up with his secretary. I called back a couple of weeks before the wedding to confirm the date/time just to check, and I nearly passed out (really, at the time I had a heart condition that is now surgically corrected) when the secretary at first said she didn't have it down in her book. But then she checked the Judge's calendar, and our appointment was written down there. So everything was actually okay, it was just a bad scare (yep, that's why 4 stars and not 5). A few days before the wedding my now-husband and I went to get our marriage license. The employee we interacted with was very nice, she made friendly conversation with us while getting everything ready. We were given a funny little book about marriage, which was much more gender-equal than I expected. Our actual wedding went great. The Judge and the other employees were very friendly, and accommodating of the fact that we brought a small group with us. We were surprised that the Judge had a page of bible verses to read out before marrying us ... I realize that might bother others of course, and that's why I'm mentioning it, but it wasn't a big deal to us and probably made our families happy. He also spoke about the rings' symbolic function, etc. From what I'd previously heard about courthouse weddings, I had just been expecting something much more sterile/perfunctory/impersonal than what we got, so I was very happy. We have many great pictures from our ceremony (friends and family took them), when we were only expecting to have a few. When we later got our marriage certificate in the mail we received another happy surprise: it was actually nice to look at! We were planning on displaying it in our home anyway, but we expedited the process since the certificate was so pretty.

Not only did we enjoy the performances, they had a lot of informational booths in the hallway outside. Everyone was so welcoming and sweet. The bathrooms were clean (always a plus). We loved the outside scenery and decor. The staff were very helpful as well. We will have to make a return visit to see about getting library cards or checking out more events in the future. Definitely a hidden gem in ATX.
