Packed with humanity and appetite. I was seated quickly, as if someone had anticipated my hunger in advance. From the bar came the sound of construction crews discussing their midday rituals. Apparently this is where they come on Fridays, to repair themselves while they repair the city. It explained everything. Service was swift and attentive, a minor miracle given the crowd. I began with a Scotch egg, an item that seemed to have wandered in from another story entirely. I ordered it for that reason. I had always imagined my first Scotch egg would be eaten in an English pub under low ceilings and older regrets. Instead, here it was. Perfectly crisp, warm, and generous. The universe does not ask for permission. Then came the main event. The menu is an atlas of hot dogs. Domestic. International. Proteins in tube form arranged like possibilities. There is even an invitation to build your own, which I accepted. I attempted to recreate a favorite from Crif Dogs, a thing called the Spicy Redneck. Bacon wrapped dog. Pickled jalapenos. Coleslaw. Simple in theory. Destination Dogs improved upon it in every way that matters. The bacon crisped with purpose. The jalapenos spoke clearly. The coleslaw behaved. I mentioned it to one of the employees who feigned anger at the distributor and said the owner was going to bring it to his attention. Three days later the beer was still on the shelf. He made up a very lame excuse, saying the owner wanted the distributor to see the expired product on the shelf. Not only that, they received another delivery of the same beer a few days later that was nearly as old. The shelf life of most canned beer is about 6 months. For "Craft beers", which generally don't use preservatives, it's more like three months. Year and a half old plus beer on the shelf is inexcusable, regardless whether it's a craft beer or from a major brewery Shortly after this I went to purchase a six of another craft beer and the "drink by date" was early January. This was now the middle of March. Thankfully I was wise to them and checked the date before I purchased Yes I know the difference between a drink by date and a canned-on date. Some breweries use one and some use the other. The employee tried to convince me that it was not really a date but some sort of mfrs. code. Yea...no, it is a date. So we have two possibilities here. 1. The distributor is screwing them and selling them a substandard product. I alerted them to that possibility and things haven't changed, so we can rule that one out. So that leaves us with... 2. They are in with a dishonest distributor who is using them to unload garbage, thinking that the frat boys and other college students won't know the difference. That said, everybody who works there seems nice. The prices aren't bad for a small, independent liquor store. Just check the dates when buying beer.
