I've been here twice with groups of 6. We've ordered everything from the burgers, to the chicken sandwiches and fish and chips. I ordered a Chicken Caprese sandwich and I enjoyed it the first time. The 2nd time I ordered the Veggie Wrap which I decided to turn into a sandwich. That didn't work so well. The burgers were good too. The items all had the option of fries or salad. All the food was good, except the fish and chips was batter and very little fish. The old school ambiance is really nice. The restaurant has an upstairs and downstairs dining area, each with its own bar. If in the area for a show, Tavern on the George has it down to a science getting all the groups in and out in time. We made reservations for 9pm - and I'm thankful we did because while the place wasn't packed, there wasn't any seats if we had just walked in at 9. We walked in without reservations and were told they could not accommodate us, didn't even give a time frame of how long when we asked. We saw tables open and some room at the bar. Host was rude. The pictures might look good but that's where it ends. The place was completely dead but we had really slow and kinda rude service??? As a cilantro hater, they put cilantro instead of parsley on my garlic Parmesan fries and French onion soup. The waitress told the cook and they're like we don't even have cilantro. You absolutely do because it's listed in your menu and don't gaslight me into thinking I don't know the difference. The onion rings are also fried in the same oil as the donuts. So donut flavored onion rings is not what you expect. I can't imagine what the donuts must taste like. The burnt ends taco had chewy flavorless bits instead of burnt ends of pork. We went on a cold Sunday afternoon. Parking a slight challenge but we found a meter around the corner. We entered through an old unique wooden door and walked up a slope to the bar area. The place has high wooden ceilings and an area downstairs with another bar that opens during events and busier days. We sat at the main bar upstairs and ordered drinks. They have a dozen and a half beers on tap. We ordered loaded waffle fries which were topped with chicken, bbq sauce and scallions. They were good! I'm really impressed by everything here. The space upstairs is large and bright, but downstairs it is a little dimmer and quieter. Both levels have their own bars. For a tavern, the food is amazing. The giant pretzel is truly giant, and comes so soft and warm. It's one of the best bar pretzels I have ever had, and I have had many. We also tried the fries with garlic parmesan. Wow these are great fries. Crisp and delicious. We also sampled some cocktails, and while they are expensive, in the $12-16 range, they are well worth the price. They have an old fashioned on the menu that has a touch of Grand Marnier, a great mix that was balanced really nicely. I also had a boozy drink with spiced pear liqeur that blew me away, though I sadly didn't think to write down the name. If you see it, get it! So good. read more

Not sure this place is handicap accessible, as you have to climb stairs to enter the dining room. When we first arrived for an early dinner, no one else was dining. The staff also seemed confused by our presence at first and were not exactly rushing to seat us. After being seated, our group ordered a "huge pretzel", two burgers and a few sliders. They serve canned soda and bottled water for those not wanting alcoholic beverages. The huge pretzel was good and a nice start to the meal. The burgers had no flavor and we think they messed up our cooking preferences (one was supposed to be well done and another not.) Fries ended up being the highlight of the meal. Sliders were no better: The meatball slider didn't have enough sauce and was dry with the chicken + waffles slider just tasting odd (he couldn't narrow it down to the chicken being flavorless or the syrup.) While I did leave full, the food and service was lacking. I can't see myself returning here. read more

I've come here a handful of times since my wife and I have always enjoyed my experience. I feel like I've come here for all manner of things from drinks / happy hour, to dinner, it's small events in our downstairs space. Every time I've come I have been very pleased with my experience. The food here has always been good, I don't think I've ever regretted ordering anything from here before. And I don't know if they're doing them all the time or not but I also have the donuts they make and they are surprisingly good for bar donuts. I have come here for dinner with my parents, and they also really like the food and the ramp was easy for them to get up to the seating area. As for the drinks I posted a picture of when I had it was absolutely incredible I probably had three of those that night I think it's a nice flourish to have the little bottle in the glass for what I ordered as well as it feeling late and refreshing It would definitely recommend if it was still available to order. All in all whether you work at j&j or Rutgers this is a Good place to go after work for drinks, or if you're just in the New Brunswick area a good place to go for dinner, especially if you're seeing anything at the state theater you can come here before or come here after for drinks and you will not be disappointed. read more

The pub steak sandwich came on a pretzel roll, which I thought was a unique idea. But the steak was a little tough to chew, that did disappoint me. I've always gone when there has been music playing, and it's typically good enough, but it can get loud inside depending on where you're seated. I love this place to please everyone, but the fish and Korean BBQ tacos kept bringing me back. They also make amazing fries for a great side. I had several candidates but settled on Tavern on George because of their proximity to the theater and they were supposed to have a great happy hour. I called prior to verify that there were happy hour specials on appetizers and drinks at the bar until 8. When we arrived I asked the bartender and she knew nothing about it, described my phone and crickets.... We ordered their chicken wings, chicken and waffles and a wedge salad. Everything was very good. I chose their spicy BBQ sauce for the wings and they were solid.
