i chose bates mill based on the education and residencies of the practitioners and was impressed enough to decide to go. then i read all the negative reviews and became a bit worried. the woman at the front desk was nice, and professional. not the warm and fuzzy type but nice enough. the medical assistant was awesome and immediately put my fears about my visit fully at ease. the i met allison, the PA who took care of me. again, not warm and fuzzy, but really nice, gave me many opportunities to ask questions and seemed to care about what she is doing and to advise me what was happening at all times. she also contributed to alleviating any fear i had about my visit. i'm "from away" living in maine and i can tell you that most people in maine are not warm and fuzzy - but this doesn't reflect their overall character and willingness to help. i can't speak to racism (someone here on yelp did) but i can say that the one thing i do not find mainers to be is racist (except our ex-governor). being from new york myself and growing up in a rainbow society, if you think mainers are racist, it's because you're the one with a chip on your shoulder. it just ain't true. read more

The male providers at Bates Mills are clearly incompetent, refusing to diagnose and treat demodex infection despite clear, obvious evidence on my skin. More caustic than that, Matt PA-C told me repeatedly that I was "delusional". When I met with Dr. Bouman two days later, he responded to his employee's comments to me with silence, basically supporting Matt's assessment. Additionally, whatever he wrote in my chart to my PCP eluded that my symptoms are psychosomatic and all in my head. I was desperate for symptom relief, and these guys only objective was to be right rather than provide care and or do no harm. I cannot give them a bad enough review because Yelp requires you to choose at least one star. Office staff were zero help afterwards, despite me calling them no less than 5 times. read more

Came here and was terribly disrespected by the doctor. I had my robe on, and the doctor came into the room and without saying a word, he grabbed my robe and threw it off of me so I was completely naked in front of him and two of his colleagues. Didn't even introduce himself or ask me to remove it, walked in the room and tore it off of me and I did not realize there would be other people there. They inspected me like cattle/live stock for about 10 seconds (don't know how they could have possibly look at any moles in that time), told me I was fine and then left the room. Left humiliated like they just violated me and didn't even check anything. Disturbing that they haven't responded to this review. read more

TLDR: I have not had any issues with billing, customer service, etc. My low review is due to my care. I called in May but was not able to get seen until mid December, though I don't fault them for this, there are about 4 dermatologist offices for the whole state now. I had what I thought were bug bites, but now I know they were an allergic reaction to a laundry detergent I switched to a few months ago. The doctor I saw decided to do a punch test biopsy on the site (which was a rash) and between the incision and the adhesive of the giant band-aid required to cover it, the rash bloomed across my chest in the weeks afterward and was more uncomfortable than the shingles I had many years ago (it was nowhere near that uncomfortable before my visit). I very much regret allowing the biopsy to be done, and I would have liked to have been asked if I had any changes in my routine, I would have realized it was the detergent without having to have a lab test to prove that it was a hypersensitivity reaction. I am left feeling that the doctor wasn't actually listening to me. She thought it could be celiac's, which I knew could be a possibility with having other autoimmune conditions, but I was not having gastric symptoms that would have accompanied that. The positive I am taking away from this is that I will be much more skeptical in the future of procedures. I'm not going back to this office though. read more

There are 2 men (Peter, MD & Matt, PA) and 2 women (Corrine, MD & Alison, PA) in this office I can advise about. If you are a female patient, please do not see the men. One is obnoxious and shames you and the other won't listen to you or barely examines you and that is from a distance. This is from my experience over many years as the office grew into these 4 individuals, and the feedback I have received from many women who have gone there. It's a small world with one derm in Lewiston. The women are excellent and Alison PA is just as knowledgeable and kind, and wonderful as Corinne MD. They actually put their hands on you to examine you and LISTEN and diagnose accurately (5 STARS). To be fair, I can't speak for male patients who see the 2 men if they are treated the same or get along just great being a man's world and all. I have never met the new female PA added on after the above four came together in one office. read more

Practice has no moral integrity, will not allow a patient to private pay when the practice doesn't take their insurance. I am disabled and have been in pain for months trying to get in to see a dermatologist. Set things up so I could pay out of pocket if needed and the practice won't even see me, even if I pay in advance! They refuse to take private pay if you have a primary insurance as a practice policy, so they would rather leave patients in need and in pain than let them pay out of pocket and get the help they need. Personally I find this policy incredibly immoral and discriminatory. Whether or not someone is seen shouldn't depend on what brand of insurance they have if the appointment will be paid for either way. Would really recommend going to Dr. Jerald Hurdle instead, his office staff are incredibly kind and patient, no shady office policies, they take all insurances currently, are accepting new patients, and they don't discriminate based on disability. I was nothing short of stunned to read the negative postings about Bates Mills Dermatology. Reading into them, it is obvious that those negators would rather lump their grievances into the practice, rather than single out a particular issue that may have concerned them. I grew up in the tropics and my skin shows it. I have been a patient of Alison Ravis for a decade. I have always received the best care I could hope for. She diagnosed a skin cancer which required Mohs surgery, and arranged everything for my successful treatment, including plastic surgery should it be necessary. When I went to put my appointment in my phone three horrible yelp reviews came up about Dr Bouman. I haven't seen him since 2007, however, he did a great job. I had a severe reaction to a medication and my entire body was covered with oozing pustules. It was horrible. He didn't insult me as the previous person said. He diagnosed her with scabies right away! You're going to be insulted if you have scabies or herpes or any of the other disgusting diseases that people do get! He treated me with the upmost care. I really appreciated it. He went out of his way to help me. He even called me after hours when he realized what was happening to me. I cannot express my gratitude enough for his diligence. I see him again this month and I know that he will give me the same care. It bothers me when people write terrible reviews for somebody when they are just doing their job. read more

Terrible from the get go. Scheduling was a hassle then upon seeing the doctor asked for a full screening and in less than 30 seconds he said 'aside from the abrasion on your face, you're fine' did a quick, cursory job on some laser work that looks terrible. Went here 12 months ago for a rash on my eyelid. Prescribed me a topical steroid cream. Sent me on my way. Only relief came if I used it 5-7 times a day. Finally, after struggling with this nearly 10 months went back in. The Dr said right off the cream they prescribed would never cure what I had and I'd need an oral antibiotic instead. Almost a month later my eye is still inflamed. Todays visit they decided to stop the antibiotic and prescribe a steroid...again. Then, for good measure Dr B thought it appropriate to ask if I was on antidepressants. Because I guess being frustrated my Dermatologist is not making headway with curing my issue after 12 months, 4 visits and 4 meds?! Wow. I'll be finding another practice because clearly this place cannot solve this problem. read more

My wife got a letter saying they can no longer provide medical services because we couldn't pay the entire bill in full, over $600. They would not allow a payment plan. I was chipping away at the bill and got it all payed off in 5 months. They sent out the refusal of service 2 days prior to my final payment. I called to ask if they could reverse this and they very rudely refused. I've never had anyone not work with me on a medical bill I was trying to pay down. If I could give no stars I would. We saw Dr Bouman when my son was a year old and started getting small dry spots on his body and face. He told us our son had Scabies. When I asked him how he would have gotten that he said from our dog. I don't believe you can get scabies from a dog. It's a different type of scabies, but anyway, to say the least I was embarrassed and shocked. There was no way this was possible. We went to Portland for a second opinion. The Dr. in Portland laughed at the diagnosis. He didn't have scabies, he had eczema. read more

My father and sister have had melanoma recently so when I went to BMD with some concerns, I expected a little sensitivity. However, I felt like the doc thought I was a whiner. He also seemed disgusted with looking between my toes (my sister's melanoma was between her toes, one of which had to be removed). My toes are fine, even "pedicured." He seemed weird about checking my entire body and, compared to my former dermatologist, didn't look around carefully and completely. He jabbered on about his wife (I'm divorced and don't care) and seemed totally offended when I asked if their office could recommend a good botox doc. I have some significant damage to a part of my face from sun exposure, basal cell surgery etc. Then I got the bill. Holy crap!! $400 to burn off 3 suspicious spots. And zero follow up! I saw Allison over 8 years ago, and my dad was previously a patient of Dr. Bauman's. I don't know why there are negative reviews -we've both have had pleasant experiences here. I am a patient of this practice and I love my provider Allison Ravis. I see her more than I see my GP due to many skin issues and she is caring, gentle, and has great knowledge of my conditions, which are vast. I have seen many dermatologists over the years and many do not know how to handle my case and Allison has been great. This practice is mean and highly unprofessional and unsympathic to our delayed payment. My payment was late due to being on social security, but they were paid.Yes my payments were late, but the bill was paid with in a 3-4 month period.We recieved a notice we were band from the office because of our late payment.They did recieve bulk of the payment from ins. but we needed to pay deductable to office. I've had a basal cell and a squamous cell removed before, so it is important to me to have someone who understands that I don't want more surgery on my face.
