After repeated attempts at booking on their website (no dear, it isn't operator error) and five minutes on hold using their phone system, I was able to leave a message following a outgoing that said they would call me back by tomorrow. I expressed my dismay in my message saying this kind of customer service would drive me to a competitor. Someone did call me back promptly and ragged me for being rude, saying her website was fine and saying she is doing the best she can under bad staffing circumstances. I did find out my date was unavailable and I could not redeem the gift certificate. Then when I said I would not apologize, but let's start again. She hung up on me. HUNG UP. I felt positively buoyant and zero gravity when I was all situated in their homemade peat moss/ash concoction. My nose took about 5 mins adjustment time, as I was about to be defkowered in the mud bath world. the attendant provides all the cues and "handholds" for all stages of the baths, etc. a super interesting first time experience. the jet bath was very vasodilating for me. afterwards, the cucumber mask and quiet rest room was a nice transition. no extra massages given of any sort sans extra payment. about :50 . 2fer Tuesdays. i believe it ran $225/2 people. read more

I had a wonderful experience here. It was my first mud bath, and I wasn't sure if I would like it. I loved it. The attendant was helpful and professional, explaining everything very well. I only wish the mud bath portion would've been a bit longer. The mineral bath afterwards would have been perfect but unfortunately the tub was built for a very tall person and there's no way for a shorter person to recline in place. It needs some sort of rubberized grip mats or something so that it's possible to recline and stay still regardless of your height. There are handlebars but they're placed way too far away from the head of the tub. But otherwise the whole experience was lovely and the massage afterwards was great too. It's conveniently located and parking was easy. I would definitely go back if they figure out the mineral tub situation. read more

Once we saw how horrible the place looked and outdated we asked for a refund we had only booked the package less than an hour before and the receptionist was not accommodating at all saying that a refund wouldn't be possible. We came here last year for a romantic day and when we were booking our Valentines Spa day this year, ended up choosing a different spa that is just steps away...that made me realize I had not reviewed the Baths at Roman Spa and also gave me a little more perspective on what else is available in the area. We had previously had a mud treatment in Calistoga at a different spa and we loved it but it wasn't a traditional mud bath, so we booked a mud bath here and a couples massage. We arrived early because we were advised we would have access to the pool and we love to relax in the water and the ladies in the office were nice enough. Unfortunately, to get to the pool, we had to go out of the office and across the parking lot, which was strange and definitely not relaxing so I had to take a star off for that. Who wants to go to a spa to relax only to have to go back outside and play frogger with cars coming in to get to the pool area just to have to do it again to get back to the spa. I will say that the pool was covered and warm and the fact that we were the only ones there was nice, so if you don't care about leaving the facility to use the hotel pool then you can disregard the loss of one star. When we came back for our mud baths we were optimistic and excited. We enjoyed the end of the mud bath but the mud was FAR too hot and we were both very uncomfortable getting in. I actually spent much longer than my husband outside the bath because the heat was intolerable and I was worried my skin was going to burn with the hot mud stuck to it. Therefore, my actual "mud bath" was quite short because it took me quite some time to allow the mud to cool and actually get in. Having had other traditional mud baths since, I now know this was a problem with the facility/staff as we have never encountered this issue again, so unfortunately they lose another star. After we got cleaned up and ready for our massages, I was VERY upset when the therapists tried to separate my husband and I and took us into different rooms. I explained that we had a couples massage and they said they only had single rooms available. What??? I have to remove another star for this and I was really very upset at first, however, in retrospect, I actually enjoyed the massage quite a bit; it was one of the best I have had! I did not get the name of my therapist as I usually would because I was annoyed but my husband had a younger Caucasian male with blonde hair and I had an older darker skinned male who was just excellent and I feel like I enjoyed the massage enough that it almost made up for being separated from my husband. So if you are coming here solo and just for a massage, it's possible this place might end up being more of a 4 star visit for you... Obviously we had too many issues to return here and have opted to try other spas in the area instead. read more

The mud bath room is in such a bad shape!!! We almost left when we saw how run down the room looked. The wall tile, the showers, shower curtains, the floor everything looks terrible!!! 10 Things I wish I would have known before paying $100's for this: 1. The mud is extremely hot (either 104 or 110), so much so I couldn't get in. 2. There is no way to cool the mud down. 3. The mud smells a bit like poo. 4. The mud is re-used for everyone. 5. The actual mud bath is only 15 mins, not 1 hr. 6. The hour consists of 15 mins in mud, 15 mins in mineral bath, 30 mins laying on a table to cool down. 7. Unlike old school mud baths, the staff does not help you into the tub, pour mud on you nor offer any of the personalized touches that makes a mud bath a mud bath. Prob due to covid. 8. There are hot spots in the mud. 9. The mineral bath is also extremely hot. 10. Per the staff, the mud temperature is affected by the weather temperature but only by a few degrees. My mom booked this as an activity on her bday. I wish I would have known more about mud baths (&/or they would have explained how the service would go when I got there) as this was my 1st time, otherwise I would have passed altogether. I like jacuzzis, saunas and hot stone treatments but this mud was unbearable. It took me 10 mins to get my leg in. I kept hitting hot spots as I tried to submerge my legs and had to keep getting out. When the receptionist came in to check on us I told her it was too hot and I couldn't get in. She gave me the 'aww, thats too bad' kind of thing, said nothing could be done about the temperature and said she would come back in 2 mins to switch us to the mineral bath. I finally dipped myself, crouching down (kind of like sitting Indian style but pulling my knees together at my chest with my elbows) at the head of the tub, where there were no hot spots at minute 15. Yatzee. Just then the receptionist came in with a an attitude that felt like a verbal eye roll said something like "Ma'am I thought I told you that you have to get out and get into the mineral bath. You cant have more time. You have to get out now." Did she just reprimand me? Sure did. At that moment what was left of the spa experience dissolved. Some pro's - the cool down room was spa-ish, my leg felt smoother for a day and it was an efficient in and out type of deal. I like to support small business so I feel bad that this was my experience. If you are an experienced mud bather who enjoys hotter mud and wants a no fuss local experience this may suit you. I would not come back here. They asked me to come early so I could "get ready," but not only was there no place to actually get ready, there was nowhere to put my stuff. What kind of "spa" has no lockers and nowhere to put your belongings? When I say nowhere, I mean nowhere. So, if you come with a bag for the pool and Jacuzzi, you will be lugging that stuff around with you at the spa. There is no lounge area for you to relax and drink tea. It's just the front desk and a long hallway that has some bathrooms and massage rooms and the mud bath room. I expected a lot more of a luxurious atmosphere for $175 in services, especially because if you book at a nearby spa (like Moonacre), you get so much more for the same price. Another inconvenience was that I had to walk across the parking lot to get to the pools and hot tubs. It's just not a cute walk. It doesn't feel peaceful or serene or spa-like. You cross the parking lot, go past laundry room and bike rentals for the hotel, and then you are basically at the hotel pools, which happen to be super warm. How warm? I don't know because no one at the Baths lobby told me... just like no one told me about the lack of lockers (This is a theme.) So, after spending a little time at the pools, I have to go back to the spa to get ready for my mud bath. I change and have to lug my stuff into the bath room. It was a dark room, covered in dark tile, that had two regular porcelain bath tubs, two mud bath tubs, and two showers. I was worried they would bring someone else in there, but thankfully they did not. First, I got into the mud bath, which was an interesting experience. I kept trying to figure out what the smell was in the spa, and it turned out it was the mud. I mean, it's real mud. It smells like dirt and funky gases. So, I climb in, and it is thick. I have to wriggle my way down, and it gets hotter as you get in there, and then you have to find a way to bring your arms back out to cover yourself with the mud. And it gets into all your areas. There is hot water constantly running into the tub, which I presume cleanses it somehow, but I could not help but wonder who else sat in there. It's probably safe to say mud baths are not my thing. Once my time was up, the attendant for the mud room came in to let me know that it was time for me to shower and get into the regular bath tub for a soak. So, I climb out, and there is mud everywhere. The shower was great. I had plenty of time to get all the mud off and out and get into the bath, which she had turned on and started with bubbles. Except the bubbles never stopped. By the time my 15 or so minutes were up, the bubbles were all over the floor. I could not get comfortable in there because I had to keep pushing bubbles out of my face. It was not relaxing. Then, it was time to get ready for my massage. Of course, I needed to shower off again because of all those bubbles. Anyway, I got a mediocre massage, and the masseuse did not listen to what I wanted him to focus on. And the even weirder part is that he kept spraying me with some kind of essential oils or something. It was really jarring and totally took away from the vibe. I left the Roman Spa feeling completely unsatisfied and kind of like the victim of a bait-and-switch. They should be up front with people about what the experience is like and let people decide if that is the ambience they want. read more

We visited May 2021, we booked the couples message and mud bath. They said we could only get the messages one after the other and not at the same time, which was not ideal but no issue. They cancelled the messages less than 24 hours before, but we were understanding because they said they were short staffed. We got there any they had some messages still but chose to cancel us even though we booked one month in advance. This review is mainly based in the mud baths. The mud was room temperature and borderline cold. I was so confused about the cooling down procedures, so I finally asked why. Apparently the mud is suppose to be very hot with 170 degrees F water added. The tech obviously didn't take do this and it resulted in gross cold mud bath. The front desk staff just said that it was weird and that it was too bad. Zero effort to make things better. The communal mineral pools were nice although no one respected the 6 feet distancing rule in place at the time. read more

What a fabulous experience with the Triple A! We started out with "A"ngie who took great care of us in the Roman Bath Room. She gave us great instructions, checked up on us to refill our cold water and made sure we were comfortable. Then for our massage, my hubby's masseuse was "A"ngela and he definitely enjoyed her expertise and dozed off three times! Lol. My masseuse was "A"lex who gave me the best deep tissue massage! He took all the knots away and I was so relaxed. We will be back here for our next visit! After our spa session, we ended up back in our room and dozed off like babies. read more

I booked a mud bath and 45-minute massage a day before and got really lucky to get an appointment. I was super excited to experience a mud bath so I was really looking forward to it. Unfortunately, I woke up late and was rushing to my 10:30am appointment. I live in San Francisco which makes the commute 1.5 hours. I called the reception to inform them and they let me know I may not be able to do my mud bath which I totally understood but was disappointed. Luckily, I was only 8 minutes late and was able to enjoy my mud bath. I will say it is a bit unsettling at first since the texture of the mud is very thick and different from anything that I've experienced before. The mud also has an unusual smell at first but I was not bothered by it. I was in the mud bath for 10 mins and I was instructed to get out slowly and shower off. After showering, I got into my mineral bath for 10 minutes. Then I was escorted to a room to cool down. The cucumbers and cool face towel were very refreshing. My massage was 30 mins away so I was able to just rest in another room. I go the 45 minute massage and my therapist asked me what areas to focus on which was nice. Sometimes with massages, they massage the whole body and don't really focus on areas that are the tightest. I really loved my massage. I have really tense shoulders. My massage therapist really paid attention to my knots. After my massage, I honestly really felt loose and relaxed. Wished I booked a longer massage lol. After my massage, I was able to use the other amenities at the resort (pool, jacuzzi, hot springs). I actually walked over to Cal-Mart to grab a sandwich, chips, water, and a dessert to enjoy by the pool. I will be coming back for sure to book a longer massage! read more

This was a relaxing way to spend part of our day. Check in: A long black haired lady checked us in. Not much personality there. Hmmm... Decor: It looks pretty old and could use some updating. Mineral bath: We changed into bathrobes and flipflops and were escorted to the room where there were two mid bath tubs, two showers and two jacuzzi tubs. Relaxing music was playing. I appreciated having a fan in the room as it was quite warm. Sabrina was our attendant. She checked in on us during the mineral bath. She brought us water. Later she brought us seaweed facial scrubs, then a cranberry scrub with loofa. She also brought cold wash clothes throughout. Thank you. Cool down: When we finished the mineral bath we dried off, robed and went to our cool down room. Sabrina put cucumbers and a cool cloth over our eyes. We rested for a few minutes. Massage: Mark and Gina came to get us for our massage a few minutes later. We were in a room with two massage tables. We had great massages. They were both very attentive and expert at what they were doing. We left feeling quite refreshed. Thank you to everyone for their great service. Relaxation for two at its finest! We reserved the couples spa treatment that includes Mud Bath, Mineral Bath, and 80 minute Massage. Three words: Absolutely worth it! The personnel was helpful through out the whole experience and answered all our questions. The Mud Bath was interesting (first timer here), the mud itself is warm as you shimmy your way in, you're in the mud for about 20 minutes (maybe longer), you get to shower before you go in the mineral water, water is provided through out the whole experience as the room is a little humid. After the mineral bath, you lay down in a "cool down" room, drink some water, and relax a bit until the massage. Which were oh so great! We definitely enjoyed the pampering from beginning to end and will return for another relaxing experience. read more

I have just returned from a couples spa treatment at Roman Spa. It was a gift and though my partner had never had the Calistoga "mud" experience he was up for giving it a try. Growing up in Sonoma County, Calistoga and mud has been a part of my life for decades.  I do think it is a very unique experience and one that if you have never been to Calistoga or taken a mud treatment, should read about the process and the history of Calistoga. The spa center is as I remember most of the spa's. A bit old fashioned and funky. It's a vibe I like. If I want a "modern feel and spa" then it would not be truly a Calistoga experience. Time and all of this wanting a newer, more comfortable, bright, modern space will push spa's owners to make changes but that's not necessarily a good thing. Authentic mud spa ambiance is Roman Spa. I give them kudos for not turning their facility into a posh or hipster environment. The smell. It's sulphur. It is what makes the mud "The Mud." It is smelly. It would have an odor no matter what spa you chose to have your treatment.  Heat, it actually was not as hot as a few other places I have frequented. Don't get me wrong, it was definitely hot enough. I believe there is an art to soaking. Float, let the mud keep you afloat and push your body down if you want more heat. My own take, not for everyone. The staff. Unfortunately, I have to say this was the least friendly and least warm group of employee's I have ever encountered in all my years frequenting the spa's. From the very straightforward rule confirmation letter. The rules make sense. Giving them in a tone that is a bit more amiable is possible. The receptionist was cool, aloof and never welcomed us. None of the staff introduced themselves. We felt as if we were in their way. Now, this is very sad. Calistoga has always carried that small town friendly feel. The feel here was cool, not even professional, just cool and lacking any hospitality.  If you can get past the staff, they are not the end all of the experience, then I would say before Calistoga becomes the next high end spa center, Roman is solid. read more

I have a few bones to pick here. First, don't be fooled by the appearances of their spa online. It looks nothing like their website does. Spa is run down and has major dingy vibes. Second, the receptionist working on TUES FEB 27, 2024 is unfriendly, condescending and unhelpful to say the least. My mom treated us to SEVERAL treatments here for my birthday, and the woman at the front asked for my moms card with no intention of giving her a receipt or breakdown of all the treatments she was paying for. She actually chuckled when my mom asked to see the breakdown. After realizing my mom was serious, she said she could come look on her side of the computer? Lol what kind of business is this? No receipt either. Very poor customer service. Third, we had to pay extra to use the mineral pools on property which are also very dingy and run down. No lockers, no room for changing etc. This aforementioned woman at the front in the spa also failed to steer us in the direction of the pools and we had to find them ourselves. We also had to ask her for towels to use. She was VERY apprehensive to give us towels to use down at the pool stating "you know you have to bring these back, or else you'll get charged" like ok lady. Went into this thinking this was going to be super fun and a great value for the money, but it was NOT. Mud bath was like 10 mins, and before the owner comes on here and says "we follow strict guidelines, safety concerns blah blah blah" change your advertising online, because from what I've read, we aren't the only ones who thought it would be longer. I would avoid and I will not return myself. Not worth the money they're asking for. *I also want to mention, they charge $30/person to use their pools even if you spend HUNDREDS of dollars on treatments at their spa. Ronda, the bodywork and massage therapist at the Baths at Roman Spa is a miracle worker. My wife and I have been coming here to the Roman Spa for years and it never dissapoints. The highlight, however, is Ronda's bodywork. We've looked all over NorCal area for bodywork specialists who actually, clinically, perform deep tissue work with effective myofascial release (not a simple rub). We've only ever found two, and Ronda is one of them. Her technique is impeccable and the effects are lasting. If you're looking for legitimate, effective bodywork, you want Ronda. Aaaahhhhhmazing! A day before checking into our hotel AT A SPA, we realized we never made reservations for massages. Unfortunately for us & fortunately for Baths at Roman Spa, our hotel no longer had reservations for the date & time we wanted. Enter, Roman Spa. After a brief Yelp search, we came across this spot, called, and were able to book for the date/time we wanted. Easy peasy. The receptionist was super sweet both over the phone and in person. Our massage therapists (Angela & friend - for the life of me, I can't remember the name of the lady that gave my hubby a massage) were amazing. We were booked in the couple's massage room, which was nice. Both ladies were super professional, and even apologetic about being a few minutes late (no big deal, but appreciated). The room was clean (a bit cold with the ceiling fan and AC on - but this was tolerable), comfortable, and serene. The massages were oh so good, especially after spending the day before touring Napa on bike (ouch). Prices were very reasonable - better than nearby places. You may add a tip to your CC, just let the receptionist know ahead of time. They also have little gratuity envelopes at the front desk that you may want to take with you to the room (or deposit at the front desk - just try to remember your masseuse's name). read more

Beware of being overcharged. Still waiting for manager to return my call or email. I noticed a $5 "Surcharge" on receipt. I had treatments on two days so was charged the surcharge twice. When I asked what it was for I was told it was for the bag that I used and could keep. What bag? I don't need a bag, did not use a bag and was not offered a bag. I was also charged $25 for pool use even though the website states that pool time is included for treatments over 50 minutes. I had booked a 50 minute mud bath and 70 minute massage on this day so I should not have been charged. I asked the front desk person to refund the the pool charge and the $5 surcharge. She gave some story about how she couldn't and that there was no manager on duty to talk to. She did eventually refunded the $25 but not the scam $5 surcharges for a bag that was still not offered when I complained about the charge. I didn't want it. It is just a bogus charge. When I looked at my credit card statement I discovered another extra charge - I was charged gratuity twice for my 45 minute massage. When I called to book my treatments I asked if pool use would be included for both days I had treatments booked and was told that it would be. That wasn't true. I was also charged $25 for pool use on the day I got the massage. Management: I would appreciate a response to my call/email and all the extra charges refunded. read more

The receptionist was pretty rude. The one in person and over the phone couldn't answer any of my questions and got snappy with me. In addition these people purposely mislead you on the additional fees. Just be honest when booking the appointment and it would not have been an issue. Instead you blindside people once they get there, just say what the total cost is! Then we booked a couples massage...but had to get them separately. The only reason we still enjoyed ourselves is because the masseuse was very good and a nice woman. I've had a mudbath/massage before at another place and it was a much better experience and ALL the staff was very nice and accommodating with no surprise fees. I choose this place because it was very close a winery we were going to visit. I personally wouldn't come here again. I will say the services were nice and if you are going to come here make sure you ask everything so you aren't surprised in a negative way because you should be happy when you visit a spa, the point is to get rid of stress. Update: so the manger decides to comment below and insinuate that the fine print wasn't read thoroughly and offered to remedy the issue in the response below...shockingly (sarcasm) they never answer the phone or returned a phone call. I messaged them on Yelp what I think a proper solution would be, plus exactly what the email states regarding fees. They read receipt in Yelp indicates they saw message and of course didn't respond either. Which is a clear indicator this "reaching out" is just for show. And there is no interest is fixing anything. These people are straight scammers. I've include a photo of what they send so you can see but I do t have access to to my voucher anymore to show you the fine print I read throughly! It's basically the same thing. Just so you know when you get there they're going to separate you bundle deal and charge you 20% for each person for each service, and each covid fee, so for 2 people that'll be an additional $100. I just want to draw everyone's attention to the replies of the owner of this place to the reviews. They're all defensive, none of them take accountability and note to improve something, even though clearly customers are experiencing the same issues. A bunch of excuses and passive aggressiveness. Lady your "spa" is extremely run down! Overpriced, and with checked out staff! A Spa is supposed to be a zen experience from start to finish. The ambiance and esthetics of the place have to be pleasant to the senses. This place hasn't been updated in decades. Clearly whoever owns it just cares about the paycheck not about client experience. You're quick to collect huge gratuities god knows for what! Why don't you use that money towards new furniture and new tiling in the facilities! This place feels more like something you should be able to bill your insurance for, like a medical mud service, not a "spa". read more

5 stars as long as you know what to expect! Authentic mud bath followed by mineral bath. Very friendly and efficient staff. Loved the entire experience start to finish. Baths are clean and relaxing, but expect the basics this is not a fancy spa. I thought that contributed to the experience, it was more about the materials you soak in than the building you are in.
