    Butter Chicken - FABULOUS!
    Shayla B.

Wowza! Now, this is some very tasty Indian cuisine. Of all the cuisines that I enjoy eating, I'd have to say that Indian fare is one of the cuisines that I'm very picky about. Don't ask me why, but I generally always seem to not be super impressed with most Indian places that I try. However, Batika blessed me with some of the best Indian food that I've tasted in a long while. Came here with a friend last year after doing some hiking in the area. We had already planned to come here just based off of the glowing reviews alone, but didn't decide what we were going to have until we got there (a bit unusual for us Yelpers). Batika is located smack dab in the middle of downtown Novato. I've always thought of Novato as sleepy town, but I was kind of shocked to see so many cute little places bustling in their down town area (this place included). The patio is super adorable! You can enter through the dining room or right to the patio. It was such a nice day out, so we decided to dine outside. Service from the host started out a tad slow and rocky but ended on a good note by the end of our dinner. We ordered the following: *Butter Chicken - Absolutely fantastic and the BEST dish on the table by a landslide! I believe this is Batika's most popular entrée and I completely understand why. The spices, the flavors, the creaminess, and tenderness of the chicken are ALL on point here. Beautiful flavors with a light spiciness. The aroma was enough to win me over but the taste and consistency is what did it. Very similar to tikka masala but creamier and a tad bit spicier. We loved this dish. *Lamb Vindaloo - Another tasty entrée! I'm not the biggest fan of lamb (my friend chose this entrée), but I have to say that again, the flavors completely took a chokehold on my palate. It was so flavorful and the spices were delicious. I also really enjoyed the potatoes (I love vindaloo dishes). *Garlic Naan - Fragrant garlicky goodness! This naan was simply perfect. It was warm, fluffy, buttery, and had just the right amount of garlic to make it wholly enjoyable. I really enjoyed dipping this in the butter chicken sauce too. So amazingly delicious! *Coconut Rice - Not super coconut-y but still solid. The coconut flavor was subtle and the rice was nice and fluffy. *Raita - So yummy! It was thick and creamy. The perfect balancing agent to all of the elaborate spices. And it tasted very fresh. Really enjoyed this with our meal. We also indulged in a mango lassi and traditional Indian chai tea. I tried a bit of my friend's mango lassi and it was really good. Not too sweet which was nice. I had the Indian Chai tea and it was delightful. It came piping hot which I loved, and the Indian spices were well received. For the portions, the prices are very reasonable here. We ended up taking boxes to go as it was a great deal of food. I'm not in Novato often, but I would without a doubt return to try more of their tasty food. Really excited that we were able to dine here after our hike. Would highly recommend to anyone who's in search of good Indian food in Marin.

The ambiance is nice, with background music that's not too loud just the right volume. The dining area is clean, and the buffet is well maintained with fresh food being replenished regularly. The service was okay, but not bad either. One thing I really appreciated was how quickly they cleared our empty plates. A huge bonus is the attached Indian market. We were immediately greeted and chose a place to sit. It smelled great. I just ordered water. I ordered the curry chicken 65 and basmati rice with garlic naan bread. They dropped off a small bowl of lentil soup that was delicious and full of flavor. The chicken curry arrived with a deep reddish sticky sauce clinging to each piece of chicken. It smelled great! Wow, the flavor was sweet, hot and nutty. I ordered the mild plus heat, and next time will order the medium. I mixed it with the rice as I ate, and the flavors were bold but not overpowering. The naan bread had just the right amount of garlic to let you know that it was there but did not dominate the bread. I had and enjoyed leftovers later that evening and will definitely be back. The wait staff were very nice, took the time to describe the dishes, and were spot on in their service. There were not a lot of customers, but their pickup business, including food delivery, was non-stop.

You heard that right: under $15 for a 5 star all you can eat meal. Before I talk about the food, lets talk about drink refills: I love whenever a place leaves me with my own water refill container. I drink pretty quickly, and being made to ask for refill after refill, let alone wait, is such a pain. The water glass is pretty small, but free is free. Plus the water is filtered. The (yellow) dal is SO on point here. Probably the best I've ever had at a restaurant. It had a slight smokey flavor, with what might have been the very slight hint of garlic. I poured it over the brown rice. Everything except for three dishes is totally vegan. Huge plus for healthy and super yummy. I admit to being surprised by not being wow'ed by the butter chicken, because Himalayan style butter chicken is my absolute favorite, being just a tad on the sweet side but still generous on the cream . This wasn't gross by any means, it just wasn't the wow factor I was thinking I would get. That still being the case, this place still deserves a solid 5 stars: The waitperson was super polite and helpful. They even went and made naan fresh for me even though I had arrived an hour before the buffet was ending. They even told me if I showed my student canva, I could get the student discount. I didn't have my student stuff with me sadly, but that's on me. Bonus points to them for flexing to accommodate me !
