It was the best bottle of theirs I've ever tried. Troy does a great job educating his customers and puts on a variety of events, including some with the distillers. The shop is neat and well organized. My friend was pleasantly surprised to find a bottle of a Venezuelan liquor he's been after in the store. I'll definitely stop in again next time I'm in the area. So, there I was, unable to attend the Frey Event in which Colby and Ashley Frey were coming to Battle Born in Gardnerville for a an event.... Dang, it would have been nice to see them, but it couldn't happen. You see, I had pre-paid for a bottle of Barrel Strength, Single Barrel, Straight Bourbon Whiskey coming in at 129.18 Proof, and I was interested in tasting it...and being a part of the event, but.... I go down a few days later, and I get to have my own little private event. Troy asks me to sign the barrel that the spirit had been aged in, as it was still sitting in his store (be sure and check out the picture that I posted, it's got a lot of signatures on it), and he had me sign it like I was there on the original night. He then handed me my autographed bottle. That is what customer service looks like. Customer service reigns here, and, yes, you are in Gardnerville, NV. Customer service is dying, yet it's alive if you know where to look. Nice local shop with a large selection of fine wines and spirits. I wanted a local whiskey. Troy, the owner, directed me to a bottle of Frey Ranch bourbon, located not more than hour or so away. It's not often that you get such service at a larger enterprise. I had passed by this shop many times before when returning from a weekend on the Eastern side of the Sierra, but they are not open on a Sunday. Finally, I was coming through on a week day in the late afternoon. However, it was only,5 minutes before closing time. To my relief, Troy welcomed me in and did not try to rush me. He took the time to ask me what I was looking for, made informative suggestions, and let me have some time to decide. I appreciated the great service. Gayle and I had driven past Battle Born Wine on several occasions and even tried to stop by, but on a day it was closed. Yesterday was our luck day as we happened to be in the neighborhood around opening time. As we waited outside behind a locked door, the owner's (Troy) car came roaring into the behind the lot of this historical buiding, and soon we were inside looking at multiple shelves of wine, beer, and spirits. We were impressed with the wine selection and Troy's deep understanding of various varietals and regions. He knows his beer too, although his inventory was on the light side, due to COVID-related supply chain issues (which is thoroughly explained). Various spirits including local ones (Bently) are also in stock. We left with a couple nice Rose's, a great 2 bottle red one promotion, and a solid collection of local (Shoe Tree Amber) and Imperial Stout beer. And if you're tired of the IPA glut like I am, Battle Born is your place. Best of all, Battle Born is a local small business, with an owner (Troy) who has deep knowledge and enthusiasm about his wares. We also found the pricing to be reasonable, and certainly better than schlepping up to a certain Warehouse store in Reno where you'll easily get lost and overwhelmed and without a deep expert bench as a welcome guide. I distinctly remember the first time I heard the words "Battle Born Wine" and the distant and fabled town of Gardnerville. On cold, windy night, a group of old and newly acquainted friends sat huddled around a makeshift fire ring on a beach at Pyramid Lake. It was Memorial Day Weekend, and no one had anywhere to be but there. Beverages were flowing and fueling the conversation, and though we'd all been together on the beach for almost a day, it would seem that some had yet to be introduced to each other. It was about that time that I met Troy. He was blathering on about his love for wine and throwing in tidbits about spirits and craft beer (which was in its infancy in the city at the time). I listened intently, and quickly realized this guy knew what he was talking about AND that I had much to learn. I asked him why he seemed to know so much, and he told me owned a specialty wine and spirits shop in Gardnerville called Battle Born Wine. At first, I chuckled. Gardnerville. Then I remembered looking at real estate in that area and recalled the kind of money you've gotta have in the bank to live there, and it all made sense. To think that meeting was about 8 years ago, and Troy and I have stayed connected since. In that time he has proven to be an epic resource, and someone I continue to learn from at every opportunity. It took me nearly that many years to actually make it into the shop, but when I did, I wasn't disappointed in the least. The shelves behind the register are lined with his personal collection of rare and interesting spirits. They range across categories and spectrums, and nearly all of them are open! Troy seems to have tasted every bottle in the shop and can speak from an educated perspective about all of them. He's a wealth of knowledge and he will not steer you wrong. A chance meeting on a cold night out at Pyramid Lake more than 8 years ago turned me on to one of the best wine and spirits spots in all of Northern Nevada. So I take a break from fishing Lee Vining Creek and take a drive to hunt another elusive creature, Amer Picon. I've only had Torani Amer and wanted to try the real stuff and I was an hour or so from NV...road trip! I stopped in to Battle Born to see if I could find any sort of Amer Picon. I scored on a Golden Moon which saved me a trip to Colorado. Also picked up a Frey Ranch straight rye(wish I would have bought a case) and a couple others. The selection at BBW blew me away but what was even more impressive was the service and knowledge from the gentleman behind the counter. He had excellent recommendations and just an overall great attitude. I have exclusively consumed wine for years now. Allow me to counter this humblebrag to provide you a brief history of what that means for me. I learned from the best: my mother. The fridge of my childhood contained the essentials; milk, eggs, cheese, a full carton of Franzia rosé. This adult-sized juice box has always been a budget-conscious and hilarious method of consuming the most mild table wine in one sitting in my book, once I was of age to drink it. I have 'slapped the bag' on countless high-end social occasions, attached said bags to river tubes for long journeys, stuffed them into my purse for special occasions, and surely participated in other unsavory tricks of the trade that I, let's be real, may be too wine-drunk to remember. We have a history. My usual method for wine purchases as a grown-ass woman involve an avoidance of most white wines, and a favor for French, Spanish, and Italian reds. I further taper my options within a certain price point. If I am very lucky, I will find the perfect storm of Chianti for $8 at GrossOut and call it a day. After meeting Troy, and learning that he runs Battle Born Wine, I was enticed to learn more about my palette. He referred to himself as 'an encyclopedia of grape and grain', so my usual lexicon of 'cheap', 'Old World', and 'not Cabernet' distressed me in considering any future intellectual discussion of the subtle nuances of the varietals. What did I like? Why did I like it? Was a wood cask involved? What does this pair with? What elevation were these grapes grown at? Do I hate tannins? I DON'T KNOW. If you have the chance to meet Troy and talk shop, you will learn quickly that your concerns of being deeply shamed are unsubstantiated. He is wealth of knowledge who has been in this business for over ten years, and will not make you feel like a moron for your lack of pomp regarding the production of wine. He knows his product line, (which includes beer and spirits as well), and he knows his customer base. He knows the daily average of how many cars pass by his shop a day. He has tasted nearly everything that has come into the shop (slowly, over time) so that he can provide the best possible service to his client base. As a bonus to my nerdier instincts, the shop is also registered historical building. As someone who in the business of preserving cultural resources, I was tickled to get a tour of the top floor and other unmodified nooks and crannies. Beware of suspicious wood stoves and doors that might close themselves. My visit serendipitously coincided with a tasting club event, the aptly named 'Snobs', which are held at the shop on most Friday evenings. Troy and several group members provided a selection of beers graduating in complexity from start to finish. He may have tiny hands, but they will provide a big pour to your tasting glass. The heaviest beer, a stout, was affectionately referred to as the 'motor oil'. It was presented to a patron as Troy flipped the light switch, plunging the shop into sudden darkness. He announced that the drink had stolen all of the light from the room. Troy will keep you entertained, surely, but he also cares about what you are purchasing. In any other liquor store, 'can I help you find something?' won't bring you what you'll find here. This is a unique place in a special town. From my limited interactions here, I can see that Troy has built more than a superficial client base; it is a community of quality people who converge to share their passion and stay current within in their industry. Oh yeah, and they like to have fun. You'll find a wide variety of wines, beers, and spirits at varying price points, which are all quite reasonable. A 'Bargain Wine' table sits next to the door, and my frugal heart soared when I saw this. I asked Troy for dealer's choice on the bottle of wine I would take home, based on my flavor preferences, and he totally nailed the selection for my upcoming couch-based wine tasting session. Traveling through Gardnerville on friday I made a stop at Battleborn Wine and what a thoroughly pleasant experience it was! The building itself takes you back to another era and the smells from the excellent collection of wines on display permeated the air. Ok, if you're in the Gardnerville area, and would love to grab really high quality wines, at surprisingly reasonable price, you have to stop by at Battle Born Wine. This is according to my friends who are VERY particular about their wines. You could say they are wine snobs (and proud of it), so when they said this place is pretty impressive, I have to take their word for it. But what I do know is this: you have to meet Troy, the owner/sommelier of Battle Born Wine. He is very knowledgeable and passionate about wine. I believe, from the brief discussion we had with him, that he actually traveled to the places where some of his favorite wines were made, and brought them back to showcase/sell at his shop. Again, I am NOT a wine person, but listening to him made me think ~ 'if I'm going to drink/buy wine, I'll definitely get recommendations from him!' And so I did. So did my friends. We walked out with a few bottles with us that night. We opened a bottle at dinner immediately after visiting his shop, and everyone was more than pleased with his choice. What a great find.
