Love this place! Somewhat divey bar on the banks of the Cedar River. It's been here forever and there's a reason. A nice little venue with a historic bridge out fron where you can walk across the river. There's a nice patio that they have music on. The menu is pure old time bar food. I love it!. We had the clans strips, chicken gizzards, and fries. Everything was delicious and the gizzards were tough like they normally are. They have a nice selection of canned beers and beverages. Nothing over the top, but nice. The staff is very friendly and helpful and the prices are very reasonable. A nice place for a drive and good food. read more

I've lived in the area for several years and just recently learned of the Sutliff Bridge. It's a great little place to visit on a nice summer day. You can sit by the water and enjoy a drink and then check out the delicious food at the store and tavern. The food is your standard type of small town bar food, but it is so good and cheap! I got the chicken sandwich, and my boyfriend got a burger. We also split some cheese curds, which I think is a must for any midwesterner. They are probably some of the best cheese curds I've had. Definitely take the drive out here for the scenery and food. Just an FYI that they only accept cash. read more

The reviews on the menu are fair, bar food. If you are in the mood for a low maintenance environment, a solid stock of beers, and about as good a fried bologna sandwich as you will find, this is the place! The fact that the taxidermy creeps out my mother in law still makes me laugh. Have experienced intermittent service issues but has been good more than it's been not so good. read more

Love the look and feel of this bar/restaurant. Food is bar food and not a huge selection, but it's a dive bar for goodness sake. Went there for Father's Day. Staff told us that it would be an hour wait as the place was packed. The food was good, and the staff had a few issues, but considering how busy they were, you can understand. We ended up each purchasing a beer and went outside to drink it on the historical bridge, which had others drinking on it as well, sitting at picnic tables provided. Stopped here on a a motorcycle tour on my sweet a$$ Yamaha Royal Star that I bought during my midlife crisis with my girlfriend. We had the BLT and split it. It was delicious. The service was amazing and fast and friendly. Sell phone service is terrible but they have free guest Wi-Fi. The decor is exactly as you'd expect at a road side pub and grub. Baxa is easily overlooked as a piece of Iowan history (it reminds me of Breitbachs in Balltown, Iowa). There are remarkable news stories and pictures of the past General Store that this restaurant now inhabits. If you go here, be prepared to GPS it. There's a neat bridge, which if you so choose, where it's possible to park at the other end (and walk to the restaurant). Now, this isn't a place for hipsters expecting craft beer on draft. Rather, they have a solid line-up of canned PBR, Schlitz and more. Further, it's a place for a solid baxa burger and pork tenderloins along with fries, cheese balls, onion rings and more. This is a family owned restaurant so keep your praise here on Yelp and your helpful feedback directly to the owner, in-person (as you or I would want it if we were in their shoes). Revised-6/7/18 Terribly slow service. Waited over an hour for a basket of fried food. My chicken salad is listed under "special plates"....served with French fries. My salad came with no fries (odd combo, I know), but specifically didn't order my son fries bc he was having mine. I showed the waitress the menu and she said the salads shouldn't be listed there and they would drop fries for me. Waited 20 more minutes while we ate and never saw fries. In fact, didn't see waitress any more that night. Old review- My family are huge fans, but I just can't get into it. This place is always packed and we typically have to wait to be seated. While we wait (for a table and again for our food), we'll walk the beautifully restored bridge that crosses the Cedar River. The building is old, choppy, and in need of a deep clean and fresh coat of paint. I'm told this is part of the "charm" and "character". Don't get me wrong, I'm a history buff, but the LONG wait for a fried basket of food and little breathing room from the next table leaves little to be desired. My rating of 3 stars...threw one in there for preserving a piece of history and another star for the bridge. read more

Great place to have a beer and enjoy the scenic Cedar River and old bridge across it right across from the front door of the store. Or stay inside and enjoy the old tavern and the new addition. I have been a fan of this tavern for decades, when it was sold last year I was worried about its ability to remain a fixture in our area. The new owners managed to overcome the pandemic problems and have excelled at retaining the charm and improving the interior, while maintaining the quality food and ice cold beverages. Cool bridge. Cool scenery. Odd tavern. We had family in town and decided to check this place out - the bridge was fascinating along with the beautiful scenery surrounding this tavern. First walking into the tavern it was packed (a good sign we thought) with a band setting up and dollar bills hanging from the ceiling!! Quite a first impression!! They were nice enough to let us sit back in a reserved room as long as we promised to eat quickly. Our server came around and was friendly... but did not have a filter at times. The food was typical bar food - fried everything. We went with the fried cheese balls (always good) and corn fritters. I had a breaded tenderloin for dinner with steak fries. The tenderloin was very thin and could have used more pickles on it. My steak fries were bland (no seasoning) and not very crispy. I did not really see what the hype was about this place. We've been here many times and are never disappointed with the food. I will forewarn you if you come on a busy night you do wait a while for your food so we suggest ordering an appetizer. The staff is always friendly. The Baxa Burger is one of our favorite go to items. The jumbo tenderloin is as big as the plate and is not overly breaded and has great flavor; it could feed two people. Thursday night special is chicken fried chicken or chicken fried steak with mashed potatoes and green beans and is super delicious. Perhaps it's the out of the way location? Perhaps it's the great view? Perhaps it's the fact that there is no other place to get a beer? Whatever the reason, I think Sutliff is overrated. We were there on a weekend. Some older folks out for a drive, some boaters just pulling in, bikers, a bunch of motorcycle riders and some other assorted local color. It was nice that they had cold beer outside as that helped reduce the lines at the bar. Seating was adequate for all those in attendance, lots of people taking advantage of the sunny day by sitting outside. Food. Typical bar food menu with heavy emphasis on fried items. We ordered a tenderloin (hand breaded was the claim) and a burger. Burger looked ok and my friend said it was so-so. The tenderloin didn't taste like it was hand breaded. The flavor reminded me of those cheap tenderloins you would get in the freezer section in a bag of twelve. However, I was hungry and anything is eatable when you put more ketchup and mustard on it. Service was fine, checked back and refilled drinks. Would I return. Yes, the area is beautiful. The beer is cold. Just don't expect more than your average bar food. read more

The original IA Honkey-Tonk. (gosh it's sad that I even know what a Honkey-Tonk is). This place is just OOZING with character. When you come in be sure to tack up a dollar bill to the ceiling to mark your place in history. Right by the beautiful Sutliff bridge, this is a great place to just hang out and shoot the breeze. I'd say it's more of a guy's joint, but don't let that deter ya. and a word of caution to smokers: be careful when you light up, the whole place is liable to burn down if you don't watch what you're doing. I've been here many times. Knowing all the food is comfort food and very greasy the location is VERY cool for a cold beer. This last visit we were rudely told next time we have to call ahead with a big party and that the wait for food would be 1 hour. We agreed that was fine. 2 hours later no 'I'm so Sorry' they brought out our food and informed one of our friends they ran out of what she ordered. HORRIBLE service with 0 effort to make it right. I held a 20% top in my hand and asked the waitress to come over so I could explain but she looked away. I finally got another waitress to talk to me. My family and I have been coming here for years, and have fond memories here. However, I was very disappointed to return with the service we received yesterday. It was busy and we didn't mind waiting for our food but the server was extremely rude. She told us two different times if we ordered food it would take an hour and we kept saying we didn't mind but it was as if she wanted us to leave. It was very obvious she did not want to serve us. Off the main road, so not easy to find unless you know about it. It's at the historic - and restored - bridge on the Cedar River, be sure to spend some time on the bridge. Lovely view of the filthy Cedar River. Waited over an hour for a burnt hamburger. Did not see the large plate size tenderloins in the other pictures but my husband said his small one was good. Waitress not the best and when we asked where are food was she was rude. They probably want you to build a bar tab while you wait but only serve beer and wine. read more
