Sutliff Bridge built in 1898 and redone after floods in 2008. Used to be a major bridge for trade and no longer used.

Stopped in here to take a look one afternoon while in the area. Very neat old bar with great ambience and service. Tons of regulars and they all wanted to talk to us so very fun. Will definitely stop by if in the area again.

Ceiling at Baxas. All $1 bills.

Love the look and feel of this bar/restaurant. Food is bar food and not a huge selection, but it's a dive bar for goodness sake. Went there for Father's Day. Staff told us that it would be an hour wait as the place was packed. The food was good, and the staff had a few issues, but considering how busy they were, you can understand. The kitchen is one cook trying to keep up so gee sorry if it takes some time. I will definitely be going back.

I went to Sutliff Store & Tavern to meet a friend for a beer. We ended up each purchasing a beer and went outside to drink it on the historical bridge, which had others drinking on it as well, sitting at picnic tables provided. The inside of Sutliff Store & Tavern was small but decorated with memories. A nice, cool, unique little spot to check out!!

Within view of the restaurant, this river view has picnic tables likely built by old railroad ties by Paul Bunyan himself.

Baxa is easily overlooked as a piece of Iowan history (it reminds me of Breitbachs in Balltown, Iowa). There are remarkable news stories and pictures of the past General Store that this restaurant now inhabits. If you go here, be prepared to GPS it. There's a neat bridge, which if you so choose, where it's possible to park at the other end (and walk to the restaurant). Now, this isn't a place for hipsters expecting craft beer on draft. Rather, they have a solid line-up of canned PBR, Schlitz and more. Further, it's a place for a solid baxa burger and pork tenderloins along with fries, cheese balls, onion rings and more. This is a family owned restaurant so keep your praise here on Yelp and your helpful feedback directly to the owner, in-person (as you or I would want it if we were in their shoes). After all, it's places like Baxa that make America what it is. You'll find nothing but honest and hardworking people at this establishment. We'll be back and really appreciated the visit.

Revised-6/7/18 Terribly slow service. Waited over an hour for a basket of fried food. My chicken salad is listed under "special plates"....served with French fries. My salad came with no fries (odd combo, I know), but specifically didn't order my son fries bc he was having mine. I showed the waitress the menu and she said the salads shouldn't be listed there and they would drop fries for me. Waited 20 more minutes while we ate and never saw fries. In fact, didn't see waitress any more that night. Old review- My family are huge fans, but I just can't get into it. This place is always packed and we typically have to wait to be seated. While we wait (for a table and again for our food), we'll walk the beautifully restored bridge that crosses the Cedar River. The building is old, choppy, and in need of a deep clean and fresh coat of paint. I'm told this is part of the "charm" and "character". Don't get me wrong, I'm a history buff, but the LONG wait for a fried basket of food and little breathing room from the next table leaves little to be desired. My rating of 3 stars...threw one in there for preserving a piece of history and another star for the bridge.

Wednesday night is hot beef night. Yummy. Pies are scrupulous. Out in the boonies , but worth the drive. Economy meals. Walk across the river. Put a dollar on the ceiling or try to guess how many are up there. I put one up in 82.

    Thursdays lunch special!

Always good food and service. Love the prices and the home town feel. Been coming here since I was young and still love it to this day. The lunch specials are so yummy but you can't beat their tenderloin either! Great atmosphere right along the river.

Cool bridge. Cool scenery. Odd tavern. We had family in town and decided to check this place out - the bridge was fascinating along with the beautiful scenery surrounding this tavern. First walking into the tavern it was packed (a good sign we thought) with a band setting up and dollar bills hanging from the ceiling!! Quite a first impression!! They were nice enough to let us sit back in a reserved room as long as we promised to eat quickly. Our server came around and was friendly... but did not have a filter at times. The food was typical bar food - fried everything. We went with the fried cheese balls (always good) and corn fritters. I had a breaded tenderloin for dinner with steak fries. The tenderloin was very thin and could have used more pickles on it. My steak fries were bland (no seasoning) and not very crispy. I did not really see what the hype was about this place. There are so many other hidden rural taverns that have better food!

Thursday Special - Chicken fried steak with mashed potatoes and green beans, delicious!

Get. Here. Great food. You can't go wrong with the breaded tenderloin or the cheeseburger.

Accessible by river or road. Traditional bar food. Try the tenderloin and staple a dollar bill to the ceiling.

Small place with a fun painted modern chic. The smell of a smoker greets you when you walk in (yum!). My friend loves to sit at the bar and he also loves to sit on the high seats, I hate that. Some high seats in some restaurants don't have the crossbar (these did) to put your feet up on and some bars don't have a step or rail to put your feet up on - this is one of them - I HATE that. There were two servers behind the bar, both friendly and informative and happy to help with questions or requests. They seemed to be very busy with to go orders. My friend ordered the smoked salmon pizza. He thought the salmon was too lightly smoked. Otherwise it was very good. We both agreed the crust was phenomenal, top 5 we've ever had. I ordered what the cook called a corn pizza. My friend thought mine looked better than his, I agreed. My pizza was outstanding. Spanish chorizo, local corn, scallions, tajín - the tajín was the coup d'état, it turned the pizza from good to great and as mentioned before, the crust was amazing. They have a core 4-5 pizzas then rotate another 3 special pizzas at different intervals. It wasn't really busy in the restaurant but we did wait 30+ minutes for our pizza. 4/5 will for sure return. The wait for the food and the high seats keep this from being 5/5, the taste of the food is for sure 5/5.

I'm obsessed with their local ingredient-focused menu and fun cocktails. They also have a great wine selection. The charcuterie board is probably the best I've had in Iowa! Because our group was on the larger side, we made a reservation about a week in advance and were seated in the side room, which was great! A private space that doesn't feel stuffy. Service was fantastic.

They have a phenomenal selection of wines, especially natural/biodynamic wines, which for us is the first time seeing this being offered in this part of the state. The next closest we've seen is Des Moines, so we were pleasantly surprised! The food was pretty good, fresh and offered a nice variety -- I will say that the particular menu we had the night we came lacked protein/meat, but I imagine it's because they are consistently changing up the menu so maybe next time, we will see more selection of proteins. They also allow you to bring wine for a $15 corkage fee per bottle which is really nice. The ambiance is absolutely stunning -- so much natural light, beautiful modern decor, with lots of plants. Very inviting! We were having such a good time with one another that I forgot to take pictures. So, that just means we'll have to come back again!
