It's a 1950s house, and the wiring in the garage was pretty messy--the gas furnace was tied into the ceiling lights, and the washing machine was connected to the upstairs outlets. We also asked Saul to properly rewire the furnace and to add a C wire so we could install a Nest thermostat. He explained everything clearly, including the possibility of needing to open up some drywall, but said he would try to keep any damage to a minimum. They did a fantastic job. I coordinated with Saul to have 4 outlets grounded. Saul's partner arrived on time and was professional during the visit. They opened the outlet and found that the wiring was knob-and-tube, which meant replacing the four outlets with GFCIs was not an effective solution, so no work was performed. My main issue was with the billing and communication. Before scheduling, I was told that an estimate and diagnosis would be free. However, after determining that the work could not be completed as originally discussed, I was still charged $150 for the visit. I understand compensating someone for their time and travel. That said, I wish the diagnostic fee had been clearly communicated upfront, especially since the original message specifically mentioned a free diagnosis. I reached out to a couple of electricians and Saul from Bay Area Electric came back with the most affordable quote. We scheduled a time for him to come out, and he ended up having to reschedule because of a family emergency, but he was proactive and reached out a day later to reschedule with me. He and his brother Daniel ended up coming two days later and coming to swap out our bathroom vent fan. Saul was also very helpful when I expressed trouble finding a replacement fan that would fit in the same place because our old one isn't made anymore. Terrible service. Daniel and Saul came out to replace a kitchen light fixture and to fix the doorbell/gate release. They scheduled a second visit to complete/correct their work. During this visit - they broke the gate release they "repaired" during their first visit - as well as my neighbors which was previously working. They left without notifying me - leaving my front door slightly ajar and refused to respond to any of my calls or texts inquiring about when they would return to complete the work. This started off ok. Made appointment they did not fulfill agreement. Did not reply to text or calls and needed to reschedule. I used to be in service and I'm aware off family emergencies. There is always a way to reach out to your customer if there is an emergency. Saul and no one from his company did this in a timely manner. He changed the time after I called him. He then changed the time again to 11:30a after missing the 8-9a window and never showed up. He later texted asked can he change the date from Saturday after I rearranged my schedule for his new time on Saturday of 11:30a to Monday. I then let him know this wasn't acceptable and I was also lucky to find a better electrician. This is the first time ever where I experienced a company not taking ownership and accountability of work completed by its own service reps. I legitimately question if Bay Area Electric is a true business, or just a lead routing service to a network of contractors. PLEASE USE AT YOUR OWN RISK. 1. My service rep ghosted me and left the job incomplete after I've paid for the work done 2. The initial installation burnt all my low voltage lights because the rep didn't know the basics around installing a transformer 3. The work was not done to code, and was a fire hazard if not remediated. All of the above could have been easily fixed if Bay Area Electric sent another electrician to complete the job and resolve any open concerns. This leads me to my final and most concerning complaint that made me question the legitimacy of this company. 4. Saul assigned this electrician Jose to my home, but after the rep disappeared, he did NOT take ownership for the rep's failure and nonresponse. Although he quoted the job, assigned the rep, and worked out details around implementation, he now states that he "recommended another electrician" to me. Since I paid this electrician and not Saul, Bay Area Electric takes no accountability over that electrician's failure. Saul insists that he is now just a "translator" for this rep, who couldn't communicate directly with me in English. I would have NEVER accepted Bay Area's Electric's bid and quote for this job if I knew that it wasn't completed by Bay Area Electric. Nowhere in any previous communication did he mention that he was referring someone outside of Bay Area Electric to work with me. He referred to the rep as "my electrician" ; I've attached proof within the screenshots of our communications. In the end, I had to redo the job with another service. The new electrician ripped out the previous work and completed everything within 5 hours. I asked them to change a total of three ballasts for two light fixtures. They said they will give a discount if I pay cash so I did. It was $300. When they left they said it was fixed. I just need to buy a new bulb for it. I took their words for it, but when I bought the new bulbs one of the lights still didn't work. I called and texted them. They will try to come out when they are in the area. It has been three weeks and as of last week they said they won't be able another two weeks. They said if I want them to come out I have to pay an additional $150. What a scam. They didn't fix the problem and I shouldn't have paid them more. But once they got the money they ran away and never looked back. Now I have to hire someone else to come fix the problem. Please don't use them. They are not honest people. They just want your money. Needed someone to come out to check my electrical panel. Had outlets on the south side of my house not working. Electrician must be licensed and bonded. Saul from Bay Area Electric, licensed and bonded was responsive, timely, and answered all my questions before having him out to check the panel today. He reviewed the inside panel and the outside meter. He understood what the problem was and relayed the problem in layman's terms. Much appreciated. If anyone asks me for an electrician, I would say better call Saul. I reached out to Saul along with a few other electricians to install an EV charger recently. Saul was easy to work with, gave me a firm quote (which he stuck to) and was super responsive. We had a relatively simple install (no panel upgrade, just a new breaker) and Saul and his brother efficiently and cleanly got it done in about 2+ hours. A lot of the electricians I spoke to made a big deal about having to run a conduit from one side of our garage to the other and were reluctant to do it in the way that would be the cleanest because that required a few extra feet of conduit and romex. Saul had no issue running it as I asked and was careful to ensure everything was tidy. Finding tradespeople in the city can be really hard but I'm happy to know that I can just call Saul when I need something done and I don't have to worry about things. read more
