We took a sourdough bread class and both the bread and the class is AMAZING!! It was our first time going there and Crystal and Scott were gracious hosts who closed the store for the class so we had their undivided attention. The small class size allowed us to get to know the other participants and if we lived in TC, we'd absolutely patronize this establishment often. My husband and I left with 3 loaves of bread EACH; a sourdough boule, loaf and "our choice" of mix in's loaf (pepperoni, Parmesan shavings, parmesan chunks, garlic or asiago). I love the fact they recently joined the app TooGoodToGo so they help eliminate food waste and provide their delicious goods at a fraction of a price, as long as you're ok with them being in a mystery bag! This is an absolute must stop when in Traverse. The staff is very friendly and it smells absolutely amazing when you walk in. Quick review. Three stars for the Sourdough Bread. The bread had the classic sourdough flavor. However, the crust was almost non existent. Perhaps it could have used another 15 minutes in the oven. Five stars for the cookies. Chocolate chip, peanut butter and raspberry chip. All were outstanding. Pretty much as good as I have ever had. We Stopped inside on a rainy Saturday morning October 20th, 2018 for their famous "Cherry Walnut Bread" and "Apple Pie Crumb Bread." I was told to stop in here after visiting my cousin the night before. She is a weekly and faithful customer in the city of Traverse City. I could smell the bakery outside before walking in. There was free coffee of course with 3 different flavors: Regular decaf and snicker doodle. It was enjoyable to start off with coffee while deciding on what I wanted to purchase besides the breads. I'm a scone gal so I enjoyed their scones.( photos always attached). While sitting enjoying my coffee and scone, I noticed a lot of local residents walking in that enjoy this neighborhood bakery since everyone knows each other by name. The owners are Steve & Stacy Wilcox. They sell retail and wholesale and many artesian breads. There is also an upstairs restaurant too! We were waited on by employee "Tiffany". she knew the varieties of bread and all different types of cookies, cakes and delicious baked goods made early daily at 4:00 am in the morning. www.baybreadco.com is their website. Most of their breads are priced at $5.95 the scones at $1.95. It's a very quaint, relaxing atmosphere and local corner Bakery. They also make homemade soup to dip in with a sandwich made from scratch on the breads. While visiting Traverse City, our hotel suggested Bay Bread. We picked up sandwiches to take for a picnic at Sleeping Bear Dunes. We also bought two loaves of warm bread. I'm not a bread eater usually, but wow!! Delicious! We got bubble bread and cherry sourdough. Both were so delicious we had to stop in before leaving to take some bread home. I always stop by Bay Bread when I visit TC once a year, but this most recent visit was a bit disappointing. They must be short staffed or extremely busy, but we felt really rushed to place our order even though it was later in the day (around 1pm) and there were only 2 others waiting to order after us. The smell of the bread is so cozy and inviting but we were immediately alerted that if we ordered any sandwiches, it would be about a 20 min wait which wasn't an issue for us. They didn't have any soup today which kind of sucks. While helpful, the passive aggressive tone when notified that the hot italian sandwich doesn't have meat was pretty annoying, but we just added salami. In reality, a more helpful mention would have been that the pesto is made with walnuts so my partner didn't have to go to the hospital post visit.... The most recent reviews in addition to mine are accurate to my experience. The Chipotle BLT I ordered was great, but the employees seem either overworked or poorly trained with time management and customer service that it dampens the experience. read more

Last week I had the fortune to stumble on the Bay Bread Company while on a walk--the aroma coming from the open front door was amazing!! However they were in the process of closing for the day but were willing to let me come in and see what they had left. I told them I would come back another day so as not to interrupt their closing routine--anyone who has ever worked retail knows that having that last minute customer come in is just frustrating. So Friday morning before we left Traverse City to come home my husband and I went back. We bought a loaf of the Jalapeño Cheddar bread and the Cherry Sour Dough. Both were delicious, especially toasted with butter. I regret not buying more to put in my freezer as I'm not sure when I will get back to TC. However the next time I'm up North I will definitely be returning to the Bay Bread Company to try some of their other bakery wonders!! read more

Great bakery. They have awesome fresh baked loaves and have a slicing machine so you don't have to slice it yourself. I highly recommend their whole grain loaf. Very good food. We went for breakfast on a Monday morning and sat upstairs to eat. Prices were reasonable for what you received. My husband and I each got a breakfast sandwich and had no idea that we should have just gotten one to share. They were huge. I was expecting half of what I got. There was no way I was going to be able to finish it. The fresh breads looked amazing although we didn't try any. It seems to be a regular place for locals and we didn't really know the ropes which was a little awkward. You should definitely check it out. read more

We ordered breakfast sandwiches, a massive cinnamon roll, bagels, and cookies. Everything was amazing but will give top billing to the simplicity of the Egg & Cheese on Sourdough. Oh my. I mean, the eggs were well prepared and the cheese was good quality. But there was something in how the sourdough soaked in some of the flavors. And just really, really awesome bread. I was sitting on a beach, eating the sandwich and it was a memorable moment. Like, close your eyes for a few seconds and savor moment. If I lived in Traverse I would get fresh bread regularly, as did many of the people in line that morning*. Cookies were amazing. Just the right combination of chew and crunch. We had Chocolate Chip and a Cherry Pecan w/ Chocolate. I had to plead w/ my kids to let me try the cinnamon roll. Glad they finally relented. Only had one bite but it was perfectly moist, sweet but not overboard (the downfall of many IMO), and gooey. *Nicely handled for Covid. One customer group at a time. One. None of this waiting for x amount of people to leave before same amount could go in. I mean, it's a small place so makes sense. Most in line were individual. I had one of my kids w/ me. Bread lover heaven with that local small town feel, I have found my new spot. I ordered the Smoked Gouda Grill sandwich and loved it, service was great, and the line moved fast. Go to their upstairs to read, work, eat, drink your coffee, it's a hidden gem! It's a converted apartment space to a sitting and eating area for Bay Bread, it's so cozy and they have kids books to entertain little ones! I was so impressed! We really wanted to like this place for the food, but we were extremely disappointed. I got the TC salad and pot pie soup. The pot pie soup just tasted like cream with some chicken broth and the potatoes were raw. My salad was all iceberg lettuce and had raw walnuts, a few nice looking dried cherries, and a couple chunks of feta. Not worth it! read more

Rolling into TC, I was looking for a small and unique place to eat. You walk in and nothing beats the smell of fresh bread and baked goods. Rows of fresh loaves await for you to point at them and take them home with you. I would eat a whole loaf, but a sandwich is what I needed. I tried the Pepper Parm Turkey and a Blueberry Scone. You order in the bakery and if you want to sit down, you step outside and just left of the entrance, is a staircase that goes up to the apartment above, their dining area. It's a fully converted apartment for your enjoyment. Do I even need to say that the bread was fresh on the sandwich? It was. The turkey was moist and the cheese was nice. I expected more pepper jack flavor, it's lost in the sandwich unfortunately. It's a great fresh sandwich to replace any fast food joint that your visiting. The scone was that carb filled "dessert" we needed to finish the lunch. It had a nice outside finish and an inside that was soft and crumbly. We ordered yeast rolls and a Stollen for Christmas. i was told over the phone that their rolls were light, fluffy and buttery. They were not! The rolls were incredibly dense and heavy and the not least bit buttery. Both the Stollen we bought earlier in December plus the one for Christmas were both under risen and therefore we rather dense. When we moved to TC I was thrilled to find a bakery that could make Stollen better than I could make. Not any more: I will just have to start making it again next year. We also had. Loaf of bread that was also dense. I really looked at the loaf and figured out that with all these breads, they had NOT risen enough. they had risen a little beyond the original volume and that's it. The rolls also appeared to be over mixed or kneaded. back to making my own rolls and breads. aAt last I know what to do. p.S. The cherry nut bread is a prepared loaf that comes to Bay already mixed and shaped. Just have to warm for for rising and then makes. Tom's also sells it in their bakeries. It's good, but now has cranberries and no nuts. read more

Not once but on a regular basis the people taking my order come across as being annoyed at having to do so. It is not just me, I've watched as other customers are not greeted and are talked to in an unfriendly manner. This is a good little bakery/ cafe in a quiet neighborhood off the beaten path. They offer fresh bread along with sandwiches, soup, and coffee drinks. Downstairs is where you order. If you want to stay and eat a area upstairs, called the Roost, is reached by going back out and then up. It is a odd arrangement but it works alright. Their sandwiches are very well made with their bread. The soup tasted like it was from a reconstituted mix so not very good or recommended. We were in town this weekend and this bakery was highly recommended by our hosts. We tried to come in twice, the first time was during/after a large event in town and we could tell the staff was stressed. The woman in the front seemed irritated with us the moment we walked in. We came in excited and smiling and left feeling like we never should've ordered at all. She was so rude and unwelcoming... I thought that perhaps this was a one off. I tried again the next day and it was almost worse... I was told I was being difficult for asking for a bagel to be toasted because only one griddle was currently turned on. I apologized and told the woman at the front I could just take them home and toast them myself to not be a bother.. Please don't make people feel bad for entering your establishment.
