What a gem! We had such a great experience at Common Good Bakery in Traverse City! We tried a mocha, americano, a Hamowich, and a breakfast sandwich, and everything was fantastic. The coffee was amazing perfectly brewed, smooth, and flavorful. The sandwiches? Absolutely delicious! The Hamowich was perfectly balanced, and the breakfast sandwich was hearty and satisfying, with fresh ingredients that really hit the spot. The best part, though? The staff. We visited the bakery today and ordered breakfast and coffee. We did get a few other things to take with us. The female (young white female with dark short hair) with at the counter didn't let me see the tip page and decided to quickly tip herself 30% which means that amount was over $6.00. I spoke to the manager and did get the money back, but going ahead and putting a tip on is unacceptable. It's up to the customer to decide what should be given. I won't be back. My friend and I were warmly greeted upon entering. I had the chocolate-filled almond croissant. It was a little harder than expected, as I could not cut it with a butter knife, but the flakes did fall off when eaten. My friend enjoyed his pastry and Caffè Americano. They have a nice assortment of breads and pastries, albeit on the pricy side. They have flat-top tables, are very clean, and provide excellent service. Small lot parking. Their support of Food Rescue and Tart Trails earned them five stars. I would recommend them. read more

I was a huge fan of Common Good Bakery, and thought hard about whether to post about this because I'm a huge believer in that, if you can't say something nice about something, say nothing at all. But it's been about a month since this happened, and I'm still upset about it. My husband and I were frequenting their 8th Street location, and I bought so much bread from them that I constantly went through my "bread card." We were so excited about this location, because they are doing pizza there and breakfast, and so we went through a short stint of eating there every week, but we started to notice the general lack of customer service, mainly by someone I suspect is connected to the owner, or maybe a partner. Every time I went up with any request, she brushed my questions off with downright rudeness--over the top, one day, when I asked if there was any way she could check the balance on my bread card. But, I digress. We don't eat dairy, so essentially, my questions were usually about, "Hey, is this going to be OK without the cheese, etc." Not entirely infuriating responses, so we brushed them off ourselves. And then, one day, I went in there to grab breakfast to go on the way out of town, and I expressed some concern about what the breakfast sandwich might be like without the cheese because the time before, we had ordered a pizza (we love and order pizza from lots of places, without cheese), and what they provided was a serious disappointment. Burnt crust, with a handful of VERY dehydrated and little pieces of mushrooms, and pretty much nothing else. It was a sad, sad, sad bit of nothing that I personally would have been mortified to serve to customers. Still, we ate it without complaint, and this was just one more occasion stacking up against them. (And no, I didn't tell her about this. I wasn't complaining.) So, back to the breakfast sandwich to go. I was, naturally, concerned that it might be too dry, so I asked for mayo --nope. No mayo. No Aoli, No nothing. No substitutions. The best they could do is leave off the dairy. In her words, that sandwich doesn't need it; it's going to be just fine. It's good. You'll like it as it is. All delivered with a healthy side of impatience and snark that made me want to say no thanks on the spot. But we were in a hurry, and I thought, OK, I'll just give it a shot. We ate them in the car on the way to Grand Rapids, and they were the DRIEST, most nothing, most awful squares of hard bread that it was maybe the penultimate offense. So one day, I walked into the 14th Street location, ordered coffee and some bread, and gently told the owner, who happened to be at the register that day, that he might like to know his 8th Street person was rude on more than one occasion (I didn't even complain about the food!). It wasn't easy for me to bring it up, and I wanted to broach it as constructive criticism, in hopes that maybe it would make a difference. His answer to me, with a straight face: "I recommend grace." I was like, WTF? I just told you that your employee/partner was rude to us on more than one occasion, and you think I should have grace? So I'm done there. My friends and I kicked off our early morning here. Our food came out quick, and the bakery is a cozy spot to hang out will you eat and wait for your coffee. You can watch them bake bread in wood fire ovens and see their staff working in the kitchens. We went overboard when we saw the pastry display and had no regrets. The cookies were my favorite, they were chewy and soft. The breakfast sandwiches were very tasty as well. Locals were lining up for fresh baked bread and coffee. An interesting kind of place, we were looking for fresh pastries for breakfast and a cup of coffee. We picked it out because it was not too far away and had good ratings. When you walk in the place, you definitely have the smell of fresh breads, we ordered different pastries, and a cup of coffee. The coffee comes in a takeout cup that they hand you then you have to fix it with your own cream sugar and so forth at their coffee bar. You sit down and they bring your pastry to you in a few minutes. You have to be careful with your coffee because each cup is $3.50, no refills. They brought our pastries to us and they were delicious fresh baked, gooey wonderful pastries. read more

I ordered a turkey panini carry out and the total was $21. You'd think it would be huge at that price, but it was average sized bread and was about 1/2" thick, so there's that. What really got to me though was the rude attitude the owner gave me over the phone when I politely asked about it the price. I asked to speak with him when I picked up my sandwich. I began by apologizing for "hitting a nerve" but that there was no reason for his rudeness. He continued to be really rude and launched into this tirade about how he chooses to pay his employees health insurance etc. and how he can't help his personality and on and on. We went to the 14th street location, where we ordered and shared a Chocolate Almond Croissant and Morning Bun (cinnamon sugar roll). I also tried a peanut butter cookie, which was very good, but did not have the crispiness that I prefer. The bakery was a cozy little place that reminded me of a marketplace. Every time I visit Traverse City I make sure that Common Good is on my itinerary for at least one of the mornings I'm visiting. I have never had a "less than wonderful" baked item here and the staff is so sweet and extremely friendly. My favorite items are the tiles, although you do need to show up a bit early to get your hands on these because they sell out just about every morning. The spicy breakfast sando is so delicious and I highly recommend subbing the normal bread for a croissant. I'm so happy to see that they expanded to multiple locations so they can share their love of baking with more patrons. I can't wait to return on my next trip to Traverse City. I normally don't ever leave reviews but this place was ridiculous. It was not busy at all and it took them 20 minutes to take our order. It was $50 for two breakfast sandwiches and coffees. We said to go and it took THIRTY minutes to get our food and I had to ask and check on it. read more

Don't let the exterior strip mall give deter you! This is one good spot! We came for breakfast and will again. They have a counter if you are there to eat, but it's mostly a take-away establishment. The array of pastries and breads is overwhelming at 6am but we did our best to get a sampling. We had a croissant sandwich and a chorizo Panini with a chocolate/almond croissant for our sweet treat. I dipped it in an oat latte. Can recommend all of those items with one caveat. The almond/chocolate croissant was super sweet and I'd probably elect for something else next time. They say they overprice to pay their employees a livable wage of 17 dollars an hour but it's really so the owner can go on lavish vacations and buy expensive cars. Sad. Wow. If you're in Traverse City, without a doubt, you should make a stop here. Due to COVID precautions, all available bakery items were placed in the window along with a way to order the items online. I never needed to pull out my phone since a masked employee popped out of the store ready to take my order. She was incredibly friendly and welcoming. The pastries were amazing. Honestly, they were so delicious and didn't feel heavy at all. I especially loved the peanut butter chocolate pastry. I'm always a sucker for that combination, and they hit it out of the park for me. We came for a lighter breakfast but also tried a breakfast sandwich. Another winner! Everything about it from the bread to the eggs to the bacon was just cooked absolutely right. I wish I had ordered one for myself instead of stealing a bite from someone else. These are the kinds of places that a community can really embrace and protect for years to come. 4 stars just because of the curbside service. I understand people are still "afraid" to open up their businesses for in dining options but why can't we just order inside and take our food to go? If it was raining I don't think I would of waiting in the cold rain for someone to come out and take my order, then wait for more for them to bring your order...all that aside the croissants were good, very flaky and they didn't skip on the filling. $15 for 3 almond croissants not bad. Would recommend the place, just go when it's nice out, they have a couple of tables outside but again at 8:30am and 47 degrees not pleasant to sit out and eat. read more

Common Good's quiche is incredibly tasty. But, it is the smallest piece of quiche ever! For $12, the piece should be more than 3 bites. And this isn't a once off. We regularly order 2 pieces of quiche and they are tiny. You can dress it up with greens to hide it, but it's still tinier than reasonable. read more

Stopped by Common Good Bakery on a whim before heading out of town. Couldn't have been more pleased. Just wished we'd discovered the bakery earlier on in our trip. The variety of breads and pastries will take your breath away. I got the Morning Bun, which was a bit crunchy on the cinnamon sugar outside and tender on the inside. My husband got a Chocolate Croissant. Both were delicious and went well with coffee. The bakery offers a variety of beautiful artisan bread making it difficult to choose. We bought a loaf of Sesame French Peasant bread, which makes incredible toast. This bakery will definitely be a regular stop on our trips to Traverse City. Eeeeeeeeee. This bakery brings me all the joy. It's a carby wonderland of loaves, baguettes, pastries and bars, and the only hard part is trying to narrow down what to get! On my most recent visit I went for the grapefruit pastry, because lemon is all over the bakery scene but grapefruit?! It was, of course, buttery and sweet and perfect, with a perfect slice of actual grapefruit for good measure. At this point I may have tried all the loaf varieties, and I'd be hard pressed to recommend one over another. Everything is perfect. A testament to how much I love this basketry AND how cool it is: the T-shirt in their window display says "the butter in me acknowledges the butter in you" and depicts two croissants high fiving.
