I love this place. It's wine without pretension. Come. Hang out. Buy a terrine of pig parts and a baguette. Get a bottle of wine. Sidle up to the copper topped bar and sip your night away. Stevie and Josiah are excellent hosts. Pick anything with their advice. Try something new! The pair won't steer you wrong. Plus, they're darn good company. The two owners have an excellently curated selection of wine at at all price points. Wines are arranged from light to dark, unlike by type or location at other wine shops. Bottles range from $10 up, but they have many bottled beers plus a variety of vintage-style pops, if you're a non drinker. There's a $5 corkage fee. All things considered, it's the most chill, and cheapest wine bar you're going to find. Bring a board game. Stake out a place at the table. Pet Napoleon the dog, the official shop greeter. And hang out and watch Grand go by. read more

I really like this new Grape spot. Both of the people who worked there were super friendly and helpful. You choose the bottle you want and you can either take it with you or drink it in house for an extra $5. They have little cheeses and crackers, baguette if you like, plus some other nibbles. 5 stars for having Jacques Puffeney. 5 stars for having a good selection of Loire valley 5 stars for those 4 bottles of Loire valley bubbles we consumed the other night and paid dearly for the next day. 5 stars for loaning us two nice glasses as we were just four doors away. 5 stars for friendliness and helpfulness in my selections. This feedback is only about how the staff treat their customers, not about their products. On Friday my friends and I went to Bay Grape for the first time. One of the members in our group went upstairs hoping to find somewhere to sit and all of a sudden you hear Emily and Raj running aggressively as if something bad happened to my friend to tell him to get down and get out. My friend then got down and when I asked what happen they said he shouldn't be up there so he needed to leave. My friend understood and said sorry to Raj and put his hand out to shake it but Raj just looked at him. As we were leaving I did go talk to Emily and Raj to give feedback that I think the situation could have been handled differently. They did not have to run to make a big scene, making it seem like he did something extreme such a steal or break something. If they felt like this was an extreme situation they could have deescalated it. Since it was our first time here we didn't know and it was unfortunate that they made us feel so disrespected as if we had committed a crime. After I gave them the feedback they just told me 'Ok, you have to go" so we did. I really hope there are some conversations about cultural sensitivity and ways to treat each other with respect. Be it that Oakland is so diverse its important to understand that the impact from this event made us not feel safe and very disrespected. As a Oakland native I really wanted to give back to my community business' but this is not a place I will be doing that. We really hope this does not happen again to someone else. read more

Bay Grape is a beautiful bottle shop (wine) with the goal of making wine approachable. To that end, they offer tastings and classes weekly. There is a small cheese and charcuterie case in the front, and a cooler for white and rose wines and sodas in the back. We were invited to come in and hang out during the week like a remote office in a coffee shop. I might have to take Bay Grape up on that offer. read more

What a treat this was. The laid back casual atmosphere gives wine tasting a recharge. The large communal table allows patrons an opportunity to share tales of wine adventures, or sitting at the bar is also an option. The staff is friendly and knowledgable. Stroll in on a Saturday for their wine tasting; grab a seat, and one of the staff members will bring 3 different wines. One glass at a time, with no pressure the staff brings over a bottle, and provides detailed information on the eagerly anticipated libation. You get 3 generous pours for 15 bucks. There are items to nosh on as well. This is a great place to gain wine knowledge as well as purchase great wines at various price points. Beware, parking is a beast in the area. read more

This just may be my favorite wine shop/wine bar in the Bay Area. I came in for the first time to hone my blind tasting skills. Josiah made what could be an intimidating class fun and gave us so much helpful advice to improve our blind tasting skills. There's an eclectic mix of retail wines, which are reasonably priced. Everybody that works there was really nice and the shop just has a friendly, neighborhood-y vibe. My wife and I live across the street and this is the perfect addition to the neighborhood. What a fantastic little shop with more than just wine to offer. We aren't big drinkers yet we still manage to stop in about two or three times a week to pick up bread, soda or one of the other little treats they sell. Now onto the service, Stevie and Josiah are just the best, always going above and beyond to make each experience simply awesome. When I need to get a bottle of wine (or beer or soda) one of them will come up and talk me through what I need based on what I'm drinking the wine with, whether it be a fancy dinner or drinking with snacks on football sunday. This is a very fun wine shop that has a great selection that spans all price points. The staff is patient and very helpful. They are also amazing at reccomendations, you can give them a type, brand or just a flavor profile and they can find you something you are looking for. It's not pretentious at all. I have come in here for some wine and conversation and had a very pleasant time. Unfortunately the 3 star is from some wine that I had purchased that sadly had gone bad upon opening at home not long after. I can only recommend buying wine when you plan to drink it there so they can check if the wine is still in good shape. Love the location though. read more

Five skylights ensure you look angelic and important as you walk past the metal racks of wine, with white chalk marks letting you know how much to pay. The flowers are stunning, and a mix of wild ferns and more rare colorful blossoms. I seriously come back just to be next to these gorgeous arrangements. The wines are organized by taste and body, and come from almost everywhere in the world. Bay Grapes is serving you quality realness with laidback passion. East Bay does it better, without the pretense. The manager cares about what the customer wants, and asks them for their palate profile and price point. She picked out the perfect bottle and of course everyone that works there is hella cute. Music is on point, with hip hop, soul, and international records filling the huge 2 story space. Absolutely LOVE LOVE LOVE this place! Stevie and Josiah are so knowledgeable and welcoming and their wine and beer selection is amazing! They're always happy to answer any questions that you might have and you can tell that they really love sharing their passion for wine. I'm always telling my friends about Bay Grape and trying to make plans to bring them in, because I'm in love with the space. A group of friends and I went in for a glass of wine and to pick up our membership 'monthly order'. We arrived with a group of five and we wanted to enjoy a glass of wine. We were told that there were only a few options available from the 'day before'. We ended up paying over $60 for a glass of wine that could be considered 'sloppy seconds'. If you are a member they should be taken care of. Don't serve limited options that are from the day before. Get it together. A wonderful establishment but with poor wine choices and service. read more

Honestly, I can't say enough good things about Bay Grape. Fantastic wine selection (varietals and price points), excellent monthly wine club, cool events (COVID aside) and approachable and friendly staff. Stevie, Josiah and the rest of the staff are always helpful and care so much about their community. We used to walk around the lake and stop by the store for a glass (or bottle) of wine every Sunday afternoon. Compared to other Oakland wine shops, we have never felt any snobbiness when asking for recs. My husband and I drove out to his place (which I have been excited about trying!) from Lafayette, battled for 10 minutes to find parking, then walked several blocks up. This was a Saturday night and we were excited to do a tasting and stock up on a few bottles of wine. Long story short, we were not able to taste. We were both carded and they would not serve my husband, who forgot his ID at home. I guess this is sort of understandable -- although my husband is 43 and looks nowhere near 21 (no offense, babe!), and I am 39. But the kicker was that they wouldn't let ME taste, although I had my ID, and they said we would have to leave right away! I had really wanted to shop for some wines, and was told that I would have to be "really quick." We ended up buying a bottle (um, fast) and leaving. It was SUCH a disappointing experience and incredibly frustrating given the 45 minutes it took us to get there. I understand they need to be careful about serving underage people, but this was ridiculous. As much as I have been wanting to find a new local wine shop (instead of continuing to import wines through a merchant in NY), I don't think we'll go back. read more

I've been buying wine at Bay Grape for at least 3 years now possibly longer. LOVE THEM! The staff knows their stuff. I'm also a member of their wine club 3 bottles a month for $69.00. In addition to that as a member you can taste the wines in the club the first Tue of every month! I love this, it helps so much. If you're heading to Lake Merritt for a picnic there's a great selection of wine & beer already chilled and ready for you to enjoy at the lake. read more

Really love that this place is in my neighborhood. I came in to have some wine as a first timer. The staff and owner were very friendly, helpful, and extremely knowledgeable about the wine in the store. I took one star away because we weren't informed about a corkage fee for drinking our bottles there, which ended up being $14 total for two bottles of wine. A little disappointing since we live around the corner and could have taken it home. With that being said, I'll definitely be coming back because everything else about this place is great. read more

I am writing this review for the lack of customer service. I was so shocked when I asked to speak to the owner and she was "too busy" to speak to me due to a wifi issue which I was told had been resolved just 20 mins earlier. It made me feel as if what I had to say was unimportant at the time, which makes me feel an entire host of issues plaguing Oakland, to which I'd not known my entire 38 years of living here until the fruition of gentrification. In a time where racial tensions run high, it's imperative to keep the snobby attitude out of the air. As a business owner of three successful business, I truly understand cultural diversity and customer service run hand in hand. I personally won't come back due to the callous attitude of superiority. A word of caution to business owners, money is green-it knows no colors and so should customer service. read more

Great selection of bottles to purchase and enjoy on site. Prices were also very reasonable. Bummed they didn't have any tastings on this day but we were there on a Tuesday so I totally understand why. We got a nice bottle of pinot noir which was pretty reasonably priced. Loved the space and the ode to DJs as there looked to be good music playing and a turntable that was being used to play music. I do know they have great winemakers that have tastings on Sundays but have not been able to make it there on a Sunday yet. Can't wait to go back! read more
