This is my favorite fabric store in the Bay. The owner is so kind, and gave me so much valuable support in making a quilt when I had a newborn. She even let me use a giant table to lay my quilt on and sew when I could not get anything done at home. It meant so much to me, and always will! I have bought so many beautiful pieces of cloth here. Shout out to Sassy thread and dream cotton batting, which is sold here. *chefs kiss* If you are unsure about quilting thread or batting, look no further. Also, the rotating exhibitions here are worth a visit aside from shopping. Bay quilts is truly a community hub for quilters, and anyone who loves to sew in the Bay Area! Great quilt and craft store with dedicated and knowledgeable workers. After Joann's unexpected and undocumented closure, this was the closest fabric store to me. I didn't know what to expect in the random very industrial plaza but the folks there helped me find everything I needed for my son's class project. They don't have all the craft and decorative things that Joann's had (since they really specialize in quilts) but they do have most things you need for sewing and they're open to obtain anything you need for crafts. I don't know how they've survived in their location other than intense quilt enthusiasts but I'm happy I have a location to go to for fabric and sewing needs in the future. read more

Abby Shay, I don't know if I spelled your name correctly, but I love your store even if I am not a regular quilter. You are a kind and generous soul who is also extremely dog friendly. Located in the "Jacuzzi" Plaza right off of the Central Avenue exit is the lovely Bay Quilts (in Building three just past the gate track. My mom, a quilter, asked me to join her in going here. She was looking for some grunge fabric for the back side of an extremely ornate piece she had done. Abby Shay and her staff pulled three or four pieces of fabric in different styles and matching shade colors as suggestions for the backside of this piece. Most of the cotton I looked at, meanwhile, appeared to be between $12-$16/yd. I was overjoyed to find Japanese cotton and an amazing section of cotton panels. Truly--they have the best selection of panels I have ever seen. Abby Shay's mom used to (still does?) own and manage New Pieces Quilt Shop that recently relocated to Gilman Ave, which is also rumored to have a great selection and helpful staff. I enjoyed as an occasional sewer and rare quilter the gifts and novelties section. Also, Abby Shay was totally cool with me walking around with my dog in his carrier, let me meet her dogs, and even offered him a treat as we left. Do a Yelp check in and get 10% off your purchase! More than a quilt fabric store. Bay Quilts has a revolving show of incredible and diverse quilt makers/fiber artists on their gallery wall. It is so inspiring every time I'm in there! It is free to go in and view the works on display - and it is really something to see these pieces up close and in person. I go in for the great selection of quilting fabric, I am always wowed by what is exhibiting that month and am greeted like an old friend every time. My experiences at this store have been good for the most part, but are definitely very mixed. I've been overcharged (double!) due to a staff member's lack of attention, and yesterday I found out that I was paying $1-2 more per yard in store compared to the listed prices on the Bay Quilts website. When I asked the employee to explain the discrepancy, she said the website prices were outdated and quickly added that she wasn't authorized to do refunds. She said she would leave a note for the owner about the issue. Totally unacceptable. In the end she did give me a refund for the difference in price and she was nice enough about it, but I just don't think I'll be shopping for fabric there anymore, unless I've exhausted all other options. read more

I can't say enough good things about Bay Quilts! The fabric selection is spectacular and Sally and all of her employees are so helpful and nice. They are experts at picking fabrics and are always are eager to help me when I'm needing assistance putting fabrics or colors together. When I need it I also get help picking thread colors when it's time for me to quilt. Sally always picks a few thread colors that I would never think of which really helps me learn how to make my quilts really pop! They seem really happy when I bring my projects back to show them as well, which is really nice. The shop is organized and immaculate. Sally, Jeanne and Becky have been especially helpful and I feel like their expertise is really helping me learn how to put fabrics and colors together. It's so wonderful being able to shop in person again!! This is definitely my favorite quilt shop. Bay Quilts is an amazing LOCAL WOMAN OWNED business. I went in yesterday for some Retail Therapy ‍ & the store owner Ms Abby greeted me & was very helpful, knowledgeable, friendly. This weekend I had the good fortune of finding an amazing quilt shop in the Bay Area. Bay Quilts has only been there for a little more than one year, however it's not their first rodeo! I was blown away by the massive assortment of fabric, ranging from modern, Japanese, hand dyed, silks, Aboriginals, every print imaginable, and on and on. It wasn't just the assortment of fabric and notions, it was also the beautiful display of quilts that covered the walls of this unique quilt shop- including a fantastic mezzanine for classes and events. I ended up visiting the shop twice this weekend because the service was superb! There was a genuine willingness to help clients as they would enter and always there if you had a question. I knew the shop was going to be fantastic when the wonderful Freddy Moran recommended it to me. I will be back... again and again! read more

I could not be happier with our trip here, which was just meant to be window shopping, but their selection is so great we ran home to get my unfinished quilt and are here now picking out the binding and backing!!! What a gem of a quilt shop! A friend of mine had been raving about this shop for some time, and I finally made a visit. We came to see the 12 x 12 x 12 exhibit, but stayed for the great fabric. The ladies working in the shop were charming and friendly. I will admit that it is a bit hard to find (it looks like you are driving into a car repair mall) but worth the effort. The light is fantastic -- makes it easy to pick out fabric. And, if you get there early, treat yourself to coffee and a pastry at Gran Milan. Best pastry outside of Paris France! read more

I love this shop. It is big, bright and there is plenty of room to move around. They have a great selection f heavier fabrics to make bags and totes, Japanese fabrics, and quilting fabrics. My absolute favorite thing here is that they will often carry an entire line of fabric instead of just one or two. I love having them all in one place so I am not hunting around the bay area for matching fabrics in the line so I can complete my quilt. Beautiful modern quilt shop and fabric (they also carry dupions silks and double gauze) store with a great selection of quilting cottons (they have all the Moda Grunge!) in addition to some surprising gems like velvets and Japanese indigos and they carry a huge selection of Superior brand threads in lots of colors. Nice gallery space with rotating exhibits. Owners and staff are very friendly too. Love the well behaved pups behind the register! Bay Quilts has an incredible amount of beautiful fabrics, with a focus on quilting cottons including batiks, solids, & print collections from designers like Anna Maria Horner and Latifah Saafir. They also carry beautiful hand dyed wools & silks, Japanese imports, flannels, muslin, home decor fabrics, batting, thread, whole completed quilts, notions, rulers, cutting mats, etc etc etc. The space is inspiring, with many beautiful pieces on the walls & a lovely, thoughtful gallery space along the eastern wall. The employees are friendly & experienced, & they don't hover. I've had great help from them in picking colors, calculating yardages, discussing techniques, comparing machines, & learning about local teachers & classes. There is an upstairs workspace that's available to customers looking for a place to gather with friends for a sewing day, or to take classes - it's really nice, with skylights & large tables & design walls. I try to go by myself so I have the time to ponder, but on occasions when I've had my small children with me, the staff has been just as welcoming of them as they are of me.
