Like many others during this time, we wanted to refinance our mortgage to take advantage of the low interest rates. We went to our original lender and tried to get it done through them, since they appeared to have the best rates. Unfortunately (or fortunately), the closing costs and volume of applicants were rather high so we turned to Bay Shore Mortgage. I've worked with John McNulty twice now in recent history--once for my home purchase in February 2011 and again in July 2011 when rates dropped so low that I was able to capitalize on a refinance. Having bought and refinanced homes several times, I am used to working with a whole variety of mortgage brokers over the years. I am used to the somewhat rigid set of tasks and processes - choose the loan terms that make sense, gather paperwork, lock in a rate, follow a whole bunch of rules and instructions all the way to closing. This time I was looking to refinance my home and wanted to work with the best that San Diego had to offer. For that, I went to a very good friend of mine for recommendations. She was my realtor when I purchased my current house and she gave me three names. After speaking with all three on the phone, I settled on John McNulty because he was able to convince me that he truly had my interests in mind. You see, most brokers have what it takes to close a loan on time, but not many have the impeccable formal training and credentials, excellent response time, depth of knowledge, and personable, easygoing attitude that John possesses. John was recommended by a very close family member. I was surprised to find my experience working with John and his underwriter Lyn to be very painful. His communication style was brash and condescending. I did not get the sense that he had my best interest at heart. If I did not respond immediately to an email he would tell me "that it looked like I had taken a break from the loan process". I found him unorganized and taxing on my personal work time. There was way too much back and forth and as a result this cost me time and money. I also found that they played the pressure game -making up things that were not true in order to put more pressure on me to move faster. For example- they said the agent and owner were putting pressure on them. I called the agent and owner and found this to be a complete untruth. The only saving grace in this entire process was working with Case Escrow. Case Escrow Del Mar is a TRULY professional organization. If working with John be careful- the network of agents to escrow companies to mortgage lenders is very tight in this community. John will put his relationships with these partnerships before you and your best interests. read more
