If you care at all for the person that you love who requires hospice, please, please DO NOT USE VITAS. The intake person (Eddie) did not know what he was doing, was very unprofessional, and left us saying our intake was complete and we could call for nursing help at any time. When we called for a nurse that we desperately needed the next morning, we were dismissed by the person answering the phone (Diane), saying the Eddie neglected to do his job properly, and we could not ask a nurse a question until Eddie had the time to come back. After many phone calls where I escalated and literally begged for help, and my sister desperately called for help also, we finally had a nurse visit. I will say that we had two nurses help us during the very difficult process, and they were professional and did do their job. However, when my husband appeared to be at the end of his life, we called for help and we were again dismissed by the person answering the phone and told that the only nurse they had in our area was busy with other patients. My poor husband passed during the wait time that was 2 HOURS for someone to come and help us. We were promised by a VITAS representative when we signed up that the nurse who helped us at the end would make the required calls to the police and the funeral home. The nurse who showed up barely looked at my husband and them told us we had to make the necessary calls! VITAS left us in our grief to care for all the details that we were promised they would help with. VITAS is an unprofessional run organization, uncaring, and apparently they just want the money that Medicare will pay. Their license to work as a hospice organization needs to be revoked. As I said earlier, please use a reputable hospice organization, if you care at all for the person you love. DO NOT USE VITAS!

I waited a month after my mother's passing to write this review so I could have some distance and…read moreperspective from the events. I contracted with Alvita to care for my mother during the last two months of her life after she was injured in a fall. I paid for 24 hour home care seven days a week. Other than Fabienne, I found the caregivers sorely lacking in the most basic of qualities such as companionship and emotional support. Also, other than Fabienne, the one on one care for which they were hired (toileting, hygiene assistance, dressing, grooming, feeding, etc) was mostly delegated by them to the staff at the assisted living facility where my mother resided, which negated the whole point of hiring them in the first place. Chronic lateness was also the norm. Most arrived 10-20 minutes late for the start of the night shift The night shift crew was especially problematic. In addition to generally not performing the basic tasks for which they were hired ("it's not my job" was the common refrain, even though it literally was their job), they often did not even stay in the same room as my mother who was a fall risk. Some slept on the sofa in the living room during the night shift, some spent the night shift doing schoolwork in a separate room, and some spent hours of the night shift on their phone in the hallway outside of the apartment. The complaints became so numerous from the staff at the assisted living facility and from the hospice nurses that I eventually had to change agencies for the night shift. Three of the low points during the Alvita night shift require special mention. (1) There was the night that my mother sat in her own feces for the entirety of the night. When Hospice arrived in the morning, the waste was dry and hard and had been there all night, despite a 12 hour Alvita shift. (2) Many nights, my mother was put to bed at 7 PM for convenience sake without any social interaction or kindness on the part of the aide. (3) My mother suffered a skin tear on her arm the night after I complained about the aides sleeping on the job. I was told that she injured herself, but there are no witnesses other than the Alvita aide involved. On the opposite end of the spectrum is Fabienne. She was the primary Alvita daytime aide for my mother. Fabienne went above and beyond the call of duty. She exuded kindness and compassion. She took the utmost care of my mother and treated her with dignity and respect. When Fabienne was on the job, the staff at the assisted living facility and the hospice staff took a break because everyone knew that she had everything under control. This is the level of care advertised by Alvita and the level of care that I paid for, but only Fabienne met the mark. Not only did she meet expectations, but she blew everyone away with her level of care.

After a week, she recovered and went to NJ Shore Center. Unfortunately, they are understaffed and don't care when patients could potentially have life threatening issues. My mom was complaining for 21 days her red button help bell was not working. I also complained multiple times. The response we got, my mom is not pushing the button and maybe she needs a psych evaluation. During the 21 days my mom waited up to an hour to get assistance to move her bowels and was in severe pain. She was constantly in wet diapers. I was too trusting and after 21 days, I personally tested the red help bell. Low and behold to their surprise the signal was being routed into another room. They acknowledged, called maintenance and didn't even apologize, heartless. The damage was done and I noticed my mom confused with hands uncontrollably shaking on the 23rd day. I demanded she go to Monmouth medical. They called ambulance and we waited 6 hours. Never again, I should have called 911 myself. As soon as my mom got into the hospital she had a seizure. She had urinary tract infection and went into septic shock. Her blood pressure dangerously low and went into ICU. Once again, she survived and after 7 days went to an acute hospital / rehab - Encompass. My mom went there barely able to stand and within 14 days she was speed walking and healthy. She is now back home and doing well. Miraculous recovery! I can't say enough of the care and the staff at Encompass, they are the BEST. Unfortunately, NJ Shore center was the worst and almost cost my loving and spirited mom her life.

I have used them twice, once for my elderly mother and then again when my aunt suffered a debilitating stroke. Both times I was VERY impressed with their knowledgeable staff of geriatric care managers. First, my mother started calling me in the middle of the night saying that someone was trying to get into her apt. Then she would hang up and not answer when i tried to call her back. This behavior went on for months and she would not consider seeking psychological help. I went to Elder Life Management and told them what I was dealing with and immediately one of their case managers came with me to visit my mother and we worked together to get her admitted to the hospital where she could be treated. Eventually she was stabilized and we arranged for my mother's sister to come live with her, thinking she would feel more comfortable and less lonely. Unfortunately, shortly after my aunt (my mother's sister) moved in with her, my mother fell resulting in a compound fracture of her wrist and arm. She also suffered from COPD and required oxygen 24/7. Elder Life Management handled her transfer from the hospital into a rehab center. When it was evident that she simply would never be capable of taking care of herself, Elder Life Management found a wonderful long term care facility and arranged for her transfer there. I had no idea how my husband and i were going to pay for this care since the monthly rate was about $10,000! But Elder Life Management determined my mother would be eligible for Medicaid. If you have ever tried to deal with government entitlement programs, you know what a nightmare all the red tape can be. Elder Life Management is an expert in Medicaid applications and they handled the entire process. My husband and I did not pay one penny for the care of my mother. Her care was completely covered by Medicaid. My aunt then had a stroke that left her paralyzed on one side and unable to speak, read or write. Again, Elder Life Management handled the transfer from the rehab center and then eventually to the same long term care center where my mother was. My aunt was also eligible for Medicaid and Elder Life Management again handled the application swiftly and with great expertise. They also even arranged for my mother and aunt to be roommates!! Elder Life Management literally saved my life. I cannot recommend them highly enough. They have a reasonable price for a comprehensive consultation. After the consultation you will come away with a concrete plan of action and then you can determine how much or how little help you require from them. I wish I had known about this company BEFORE the crises with my mother and my aunt. I would encourage anyone who may need elder care services PLAN NOW rather than later.
