It is by reservation only, which is done online and you pay online ahead of time as well, which makes for enjoyable experience the day of, not worrying about the check, tip, etc. You get unlimited tea, and there are hot and iced varieties. I started with the mango passion fruit green tea and then finished the experience with the iced raspberry hibiscus -- you can switch it up as much as you want. The savories consisted of a red pepper quiche, spinach artichoke cups, cucumber Boursin sandwiches and almond chicken salad croissants. The standard tea includes one scone per person and I highly recommend ordering extra -- they're phenomenal and are served with strawberry jam and clotted cream. Our desserts were a raspberry lemon pound cake, chocolate and vanilla macarons and a vanilla custard in a pie crust cup with a fresh raspberry on top. Everything was amazing and they rotate menus seasonally. Children are permitted but it's the same menu and price for them, just FYI. I'll definitely return and recommend to others for special occasions or no occasion at all.

The building is well kept, the staff are kind, and the food is absolutely delicious. If you plan to dine here, be sure to make a reservation on their website! When you are seated, you get to choose from a list of hot, cold, caffeinated and non-caffeinated tea. Your waitress will bring your table milk, sugar, and your own little tea pot with hot water that is the perfect size for two cups of tea. The set menu includes savory and sweet items. The first course items on the bottom plate are a cucumber sandwich, quiche, pesto artichoke pastry, and a chicken salad croissant with an almond crust. The middle layer is a plain scone which is paired with strawberry jam and a whipped cream. The top plate holds the dessert portion. This included a sweet pastry, chocolate mousse cup, and orange cranberry bread. The bread flavor changes throughout the year. The Johnston House also hosts events like bridal showers and baby showers. This is a venue where alcohol is not permitted, so it is perfect for a relaxed, intimate event. I can not wait to be back for my sisters baby shower in a couple months!

And wow... absolutely delicious! We happily grabbed a bottle of their Cab Franc to enjoy with dinner and it paired perfectly with everything. We started with the ricotta toast: homemade ricotta, sun-dried tomatoes, roasted red peppers, and garlic oil. Absolutely delicious. I honestly never even knew homemade ricotta could taste THAT good! For dinner, I got the salmon special with a white wine sauce over a bed of chickpea ragù, and I seriously could not stop eating it. So flavorful and perfectly cooked. The fettuccine Alfredo with chicken was INSANE -- rich, fresh, creamy, and you could immediately tell the Alfredo sauce was homemade and made fresh to order... definitely not from a jar. Soooo good! One of the best parts was the chef personally making rounds to check on guests and get feedback. Every table seemed to have nothing but positive things to say. Amazing food, amazing atmosphere, amazing experience. We already can't wait to go back. Make this a must-try ASAP!

You could just walk around taking everything in for hours. We arrived around 5pm on Saturday and was greeted by Ed. I can't say enough about him. You can just tell he's a good person and really enjoys what he does. He gave us a tour and immediately made us feel right at home. I absolutely loved that there were two black labs on the grounds as well. They were both super friendly dogs! The room that we had was beautiful! It was also very clean which is always a plus. We had a very nice bay window that looked out onto the North Side. There was also a working fireplace that was nice to have during the night. We were served breakfast in the dining room area that was very good. Ed made sure to make us comfortable and shared a few interesting stories with us before the other guests arrived for breakfast. Once the other guests arrived we all sat together and had a lovely conversation. It's nice to hear others experiences and suggestions on where to go and what to see. This place made me never want to go back to the more traditional chain hotels! I would definitely recommend this place to anyone and will be back for sure.

We got lucky to have an unexpected night out with an unexpected reservation opening. Here's what I'd recommend knowing: - valet only - no kids under 13 - scratch kitchen, which is fantastic - strict dress code - if you are in the tavern you have to walk outdoors to the bathroom. It's not far but if it's raining it might be a consideration. Our server was super kind to us, and the food was fantastic. It's a unique interior for sure; we sat on the tavern side which is in the old carriage house. I've eaten inside the main restaurant and it definitely feels like eating in weird rooms in a house (which it is), but for some reason it's part of the charm.

The space looks a little dated from the outside and I would say that holds true inside as well. But what it lacks in aesthetics it makes up for in the food and service. Our event offered chicken, two types of pasta with one being gluten-free, scalloped potatoes, carrots and green beans. There were individually plated salads with either ranch or homemade Italian dressing and rolls with butter.
