They asked if we had any questions or needed help. Since we did not, they just let us do our thing. I liked that. It gets intimidating having people always watching you or floating around if you do not want it. We did see them answering questions and helping people who requested it, so if you are nervous or in need of assistance they will happily help you out. There were also life jackets, wet suits, and even dry bags available for rental in addition to the equipment (canoes, paddle boards, sail boats). You reserve a slot and off you go to launch from their nice ramp, which is also open to the public. I definitely recommend wearing flip flops or water shoes. I am not from the area, so did not know what to expect. It was a bit rocky in some areas so I was glad to not be launching barefoot. The staff we had that day were fantastic. They were very nice and many of them very experienced and helpful. My friend told me they were also all volunteers. They do have a tip jar for their assistance though, so be sure to bring some cash to support them! All around great experience and I highly recommend if you are in the area looking for something fun to do!

But Waypoint Park was not far from a brewery that we went to and we wanted to go take a walk afterwards. Of course the main calling card here is The Acid Ball, an old piece of equipment from a lumber mill which I believed was used to relieve pressure for wood chips during processing... but don't hold me to that. Anyway I remember where the ball used to be and saw that it was relocated to this park which isn't all that far from where it was. I saw pictures and apparently at night reflective lights shine upon it giving it all kinds of lighted looks and effects but it's still quite impressive during the day too. There were other highlights here too as the park is directed towards a waterway and towards the west you can see Lummi Island and the water. A very pleasant park to go to and it was very peaceful during the time we spent here though I'm not sure if it's like that all the time as it's by apartments (or perhaps condominiums) but it certainly was a fun stop!

I took the walk here and it was vacant which was so gorgeous. The seagulls and the pier, and it was so dang clean! Like my goodness. Took my shoes off and waded in the water for a bit. The landscaping is really something else. Take in that salty bay air and dip your feet in the water!

We traveled to Bellingham just for this camp. Both my children really enjoyed sailing in the past. After two days at the camp, my son was so scared he refused to get on a sailboat and spent 2 days riding on the instructors powerboat. My daughter thought it was fun but terrifying. We didn't return to the camp the final day (what a waste of money). A friend recommended we try a lesson at the Community Boat Center (CBC) in Fairhaven. My son went from refusing to get in the boat and panicking when it moved to loving sailing again. By the end of the (2 hour) lesson he was climbing all over the boat and thanking the instructors for rekindling his passion for sailing. Next year we will be traveling to Bellingham again and signing up at CBC. They will provide a child friendly environment that promotes confidence and tunes into kids. The instructors at BYC, really didn't connect with the kids on a personal level and they encouraged rough housing on the docks. On our last day, a kid was pulled out of the water clutching his arm and crying in pain.

I did a fall exercise walk in rainy weather with an umbrella. This park is a wide open space…read morewithout trees, where the earthen berms between wetland ponds serve as walkways. I startled a coven of ducks who were huddled together and they proceeded to flap their wings vigorously and take off almost vertically! I was happy to have this little encounter with wildlife....beats ridiculous growling traffic any time. The curved roads to get here are lined with young, small trees that have a crimson/gold fall color flourish inspite of their stature. The park itself is just basins, ponds and wetlands -- so how you might bake in the bare sun in mid August is your guess alone. I would wilt without simple tree shade. Saws were brought here about 100 years ago...and there went the complex forests (and shade) that had kept the ecosystem here in balance for centuries. I liked finding this park because it is a relief for the imagination, anytime you can get away from the rectilinear grid/open-air cages of brutalist, modern America. You can't fully escape that commodified world as the park is edged by the characterless, five-story cheap construction office blocks and warehouses that give the appearance of anyplace [from Florida to Texas to Minnesota....]. Far be it that the Pacific Northwest should retain any semblance of its unique native trees and ecology -- no settler would settle for that! The children's park seems quite fun and nearby are shelters with benches and tables for picnics. The restrooms were open and used by people who drove up. How nice to have publicly accessible facilities!

But in many areas there wouldn't be any grass even if it had rained for a month. Lastly, I support young golfers learning the game, but when a group of 12 year olds take 6 to 8 practice swings with each shot, it slows the game to a painful pace and the pro shop needs to manage their game. (The kids were over 4 hours at 12 holes).
