    The child pool.
    Laura C.

We have been very happy with Arne Hanna. My oldest child started taking swim lessons off and on for the last 3 years. We've been happy with most of the instructors. Our family also enjoys going swimming during preschool and open swim periods. Arne Hanna features a large walk-in child pool, that's only about 3 feet deep at the deepest end, a large lap pool, a diving pool, and hydrotherapy tub. The kids pool has a cool water slide, for riders 48" and taller. The only problem we've experienced is that sometimes the small pool is very cold. Sometimes AH has a sign up telling people of this and they will refund your $ but it's frustrating to show up for a lesson or open swim to a teeth-chatteringly cold pool. There are 2 family dressing/shower rooms and then a men's and women's changing room. The family changing rooms are great, but during heavy use times, can be a long wait to get into. They have a changing table in each of them, which is really handy if you have a small child that needs to be diapered/dressed. The staff are friendly and helpful. We really like Arne Hanna.

Covid19 specific review: Bayside is open for swimming lessons. When signing up for swim lessons,…read morethe website and staff stated that they were reducing numbers and following covid protocols. The second day of lessons, the website change to say they were full occupancy and normal operations. Full classes. Unvaccinated children sitting or standing shoulder to shoulder, and class "cheers" where children all chant while huddled together. Their website was updated to say chlorine off-gassing in the air will kill covid-19 aerosols -- no source or verified science given behind that hopeful thinking. Rather, the CDC recommendations remain that people maintain 6ft distance in and out of the water, indoors or outdoors when at pools. https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/downloads/community/Aquatic-Venues-COVID19-Daily-Checklist-for-staff.pdf Risk tolerances vary and many people may be quite OK with their approach. However, their bait and switch tactic has soured me to their offerings.

Then they said I couldn't be in there since I'm not a member. They kicked me out, so then I sat in a chair in the entrance to wait for him. They said no! I need to leave the building. I'm sitting outside on the curb waiting for my son for the next hour. It was very humiliating. I won't be bring him back here again. I love that I can pay for his yearly membership, but can't wait for him in the building. If it was raining out today I would have been so pissed.... I'm very disappointed. There are a lot of other YMCA's that are kind. Stay away from this one.

Oak Harbor was in our competition circuit and the high school did not have a school on campus, so the swim meets were contested at this YMCA. It was the regular season pool we traveled the furthest to compete at and offered a different competition experience than some of the other pools we competed at. I may have competed/coached at this pool as part of my YMCA swim team circuit as well. The pool was shallow for the full length, meaning no blocks for starts. Some of the swimmers were really irked by this, I did not mind. There was space on the pool deck for bags and a little bit of bleacher area seating. The locker rooms were clean and easy to find. The parking lot was large enough for regular YMCA users as well as both teams. During one of my high school swim meets here, my grandparents (who lived in Oak Harbor) even stopped by and we had space to talk on our own in the parking lot.

The parking lot is quite full. There were many classes going on when we were there for an event. Signages are more pictorial rather than in words. Also, the folks at Bonsor can be awkward if you're a woman swimming alone. I've also tried Eileen Pool. Ultimately, I settled on this one because it's newer, more spacious, and forced me to get used to practicing in a pool where I can't touch the floor at all. After a few weeks of regular practice here, I'm no longer anxious when I cross the boundary between the shallow and deep ends (at other pools). As a bonus, I haven't had unsolicited creepy comments from anyone here - they seem to be generally respectful. They also have lockers that you don't need to pay for, nor do you need to bring your own lock. My chlorine sensitivity is usually not triggered by the levels at this pool either. They also have a leisure pool but I find it too warm to swim laps. The one thing to keep in mind is to check the timings when they're operating in a 50 m / 25 m configuration - and whether that overlaps with classes.

Sure, it`s a little run down, Nah, it`s not made for roid…read moremonkeys, and Ya, you bet! it`s a small community gym, but for us locals, us regulars, it's a gem. With its caring down-to-earth staff, split gym, pool and hot tub, steam and sauna, fitness classes, racquetball court and preschool, Ron Andrews (RA) keeps the community vibe fresh and flowin`strong. Maintaining a steady mixed demographic of preschoolers, moms, teens, fitness buff regulars and aquasizing steam-lovin` seniors, RA is a hub for the North Van community and it keeps us connected. And yes, it represents us better than the North Vancouver Boyz on Youtube ;) It oozes community factor and awesomeness... all because of the staff. They listen. After renos of the gym were completed a couple years back, the staff posted a bulletin: How do you like the new changes? Suggestions for improvement? [Suggestion box]. Though I liked the new layout very much, I submitted 4 suggestions after a few test-run workouts: more mats, add a full length mirror to the mat area, switch the location of a treadmill with another fitness machine because it's a little dangerous, and perhaps have a themed dance music night for a couple hours. And Voila! Within a week, my first 3 suggestions were implemented, and a basic questionnaire to have a dance music night went up. Community feedback is always encouraged here. They motivate. One of my friends began eating healthy and working out regularly to shed off a few extra pounds. She had been succeeding and gaining great results with her fitness plan. Noticing her change, the Weight Room Supervisor acknowledged that she was lookin great, ended up reviewing her food plan and providing healthy eating tips, and offered a couple personal training sessions if she could reach her next goal, which she did. How's that for motivation? ;) They care. Proactive, helpful, kind and continuously working to make it the best community centre it can be, the staff make RA the epitome of a well-run community centre. Core to their credo is community-mindedness. So by the looks of it, it's just your everyday reccentre with an average weight room and pool, but when you get to know it, you realize its the heart of our community... in the District of North Vancouver :)
