As I was sitting there watching this campy musical I was getting trippy flashbacks. If you were a child of the 90′s, or even a twenty something that used to lay around on lazy weekend mornings watching the boob tube there is more than a fart's chance in a wind tunnel that you used to watch Saved By The Bell. It was the perfect mindless junk TV show. The plots were ridiculous as if a fifth grader wrote the scripts. Many gals had a crush on Zach and Slater. Many guys used to fantasize about Kelly and Jessie. We laughed at the exaggerated awkwardness of Screech. We wondered why Lisa was even part of the show. Mr Belding was the cool principal we wish we had. It never seemed as if any teachers even worked at Bayside High. In fact, were there really any other students who attended this high school? The crew hung out in the hallways by their lockers more than they ever went to class. Sounds like my kind of school! Damn, I wish I went to Bayside instead of the dreary suburban hellhole of a learning institution I got stuck with. My high school resembled a prison. At least we got to live vicariously through our friends at Bayside every weekend, and then in reruns forever! Now, here we are 20 years later still reminiscing about this series, it can still be found in reruns on TV, and some of the original cast are acting on new series and entertainment shows. Screech made porn tapes. Jessie made a career killing stripper movie. Lisa did something to her face that makes her unrecognizable and not in a good way. Mr Belding has disappeared. Good thing that Bayside! The Musical! has come around to help us relive those wonderful years of the 90′s with a show so twisted and evil that it makes you wish the original series was more like this! Now playing at Theatre 80 on St Marks Place in NYC you can join in and become an honorary classmate. Beware the front row pill splash zone! Zach is still a cool dude that can stop time and talk to the audience during a pivitol scene. Kelly is still his love interest but also a slutty cheerleader that sleeps with anyone and anything, especially the creepy college dude. Slater is now obviously fighting his own sexuality and homoerotic fantasies. Screech is still annoyingly geeky and also a clueless weirdo horndog. Jessie is a caffeine pill popping addict. Lisa is, well, the same and we wonder why she's here. Mr Belding is still a clueless principal that pops in to offer guidance that usually gets dismissed by the kids anyway. Bayside! The Musical! is a bizarro world Saved By The Bell and it's an amazingly funny trip down memory lane. If we were on acid! A bit dirty and raunchy in that it takes these characters we know and love and ruins our view of them forever. In fact, it kind of improves on them. If this version of the show were on TV today it would air on Showtime or Netflix, have a huge following, and garner a boatload of awards! Sex sells baby! As far as the actual storyline goes here it follows some of the original show's most known episodes, and mashes them up to over the top humorous effect. As always, the kids have to solve a problem in a half hour show (how to save their hangout The Max), along with impediments along the way, and come out with a happy ending. With the raunch factor thrown in a "happy ending" sounds about right! There are even visits from past characters such as Tori Spelling who was on a few episodes as Screech's nerdy love interest, and Tori Scott who was the leather jacket clad voice of reason for around ten episodes and another romantic interest of Zach. Tori Tori Tori! I have to say that whenever her character appears on the stage, as embodied by Seth Blum, who is also Mr Belding, he almost steals the show with his outrageous portrayal of this person. There were some points that you can even notice the other cast members holding back laughter. The audience was howling with laughs pretty much the whole show. Some of the scenes brought back memories. Some of the crazy songs had us in stiches. Trapper Keeper, All Girls Slumber Party, Wrestle U, and so many other songs were hilarious, and dirty. The whole cast is endearing, talented, funny, and can sing. Sam Harvey, Katie Mebane, John Duff, Adriana Spencer, Justin Cimino, Shamira Clark, Amanda Nicholas, and the live band all kill it on stage. You kind of want to hang out with them, in their Bayside personas of course. Kelly - call me! Bayside! This musical is so funny but so wrong. Don't go if you're easily offended like Stephanie Z. seems to be. It helps to have watched Saved By the Bell & get the whole cheese factor of it all. My husband absolutely LOVED it. If you sit in the front, be prepared to get caffeine pills sprayed on you & maybe a beach ball your way. I feel like they could have done more with the source material but great that Tori & Violet made appearances. The actress who played Jessie was just as awesome as advertised & overall, I would highly recommend this to anyone who grew up seeing the show. Well, that was interesting. This show is almost over so it's weird to review it now, but fuck it. If you watched Saved by the Bell growing up and like raunchy jokes, you'll like Bayside. It's weird and a little uncomfortable that you have to walk through the bar to get the seating area, but getting checked in is otherwise seamless. The seating are is a little beat up but the front row seats are right on top of the stage which is good for audience interaction (more on that shortly). Intermission was pretty short so plan to chug your drinks if you're going to take advantage of that. Tickets are cheap regardless; I'd recommend springing the extra $10 to grab front row seats. I won't bother with every single particular of the show but it is very funny. To echo others sentiments, all of the Saved by the Bell characters are turned up all the way. For Slater and Jessie in particular this works great, driven also by Slater making "lets fuck" eyes at every guy in the audience and Jessie's caffeine pill addiction. I was wearing a Kelly Kapowski shirt (yes, they make those) which Jessie took issue with; I was then treated to having dozens of fake caffeine pils (actually tasty marshmellows) blown on me. Kelly, Belding and Zach were alright, but Screech was pretty terrible in my book. Instead of making him even weirder and creepier, it would've been funny if they made him the only normal person in the show. Tori got KILLED in this show, including the used condom stuck in her hair. It's almost over, but if you have a good sense of humor and liked Saved by the Bell you'll like this. This show was worth every damn penny I paid to see it! I had only read that the show was a parody of Saved By the Bell, but it absolutely exceeded my expectations! If anything, this could've been called a "Bizarro" Saved By the Bell because although the character names are the same, the characters were not what you would think they were supposed to be if you had watched the shows in the 90s, like I did. I'm not going to go into great detail of what the show is about, but to sum it up, the show was extremely raunchy, sex-themed, filled with tons of crude jokes and some foul language sprinkled in. This show is an absolute must for any fan of Saved by the Bell. Period. It really nailed it. The show parodies how awesomely bad the concept, plots and characters were; how blatantly obvious it is now as an adult, but slipped under the radar of your rational mind that you watched it with on Saturday mornings and later before school. Though some jokes are repeated slightly past their relevancy, they never grow stale. That's because the show moves fast, uses irreverent humor and never apologizes for anything. I saw Book of Mormon on Broadway last month and left this show as equally fulfilled. It is a great night out with friends, but only friends who watched Saved by the Bell and have an above average memory of the individual episodes - there were some really random references, Schreech's lucky beret and Chief Henry to name a few. My question though is how they never referenced the disappearance of Mikey and Milo from the Miss Bliss era. I hope they update the show yearly or something because this is something I would never tire of watching. Hell, I'll update it for them. Great job to the cast and crew! read more

I saw this performance last night. I used to watch Saved By The Bell all the time growing up. And I wouldn't recommend going to this show unless you did to. The whole premise of this performance, is they make fun of the original show and all of it's undertones (Slater being gay really?). The cast was pretty good, my favorite doppleganger was Lisa Turtle. Her actor nailed it. Jesse Spano was also impressive, as her caffeine pill addiction is excessive to the point of absurdity. If you sit in the front row except to be hit with some stray pills (she even threw some into one audience members mouth). I think if you are a really really big fan of the show, keep your eye on the ever roving list of former show actors who will come through. The guy who played Max is making an appearance in a couple of weeks. They've also had Dennis Haskins, Dustin Diamond and the woman that played Tori stop through. The theater is small, their are many laughs to be had. I recommend this with a group of friends as part of a big night out. read more

If you grew up with Saved by the Bell you must see this show. I was laughing so hard I was crying throughout basically the entire show. I consider myself a super fan and have seen every episode at least once, so it was especially entertaining with all the random references. That being said, my husband does not share my affection for the series but still really enjoyed the show. The cast was phenomenal, but Jessie Spano was spot on. I couldn't look at her without cracking up. Also, Mr. Belding/Max/Tori was amazing. Seriously, even the band was cracking up when Tori was on stage. I randomly came across information on this show and thought it would be a fun double date. Theater is nice, stadium seating, maybe 150 seats. Actors and plot had the vibe of the real show, but funny parody. Bar attached next door where you can get pre and mid show drinks. I thought the first half of the show was 4 or even 5 stars for the price/expectations, but the second half really went of the rails. A character, Tori, started doing some kind of solo improv that went on for maybe 5 minutes, which felt like an hour, breaking the fourth wall and sucking the air out of the room. The jokes that were funny in act 1, were overdone in act 2. Overall, I'm glad I went, but there was room for improvement. read more

I absolutely cannot say enough good things about this show. Anyone complaining that it's too raunchy, maybe you should have done dome research before going, or maybe you need to get your sense of humor checked. This show takes all the characters to extremes, but that's the point. The writing, the music, and especially the cast are amazing. My boyfriend and I have been to this show 4 times. We keep bringing different friends back because we think everyone who grew up watching this show needs to see it. They do reference obscure plot points, but I think it's awesome because every time I come I notice another reference I hadn't before, and I laugh all over again. Although, also, the same jokes I saw the first time are still funny the 4th time. We actually went and saw Book of Mormon after having seen this and didn't think it was that funny by comparison. This is my absolute favorite NYC discovery. The actors playing Slater and Jesse really make the show. One of our viewings had a different actor in the Slater role, and it was not the same. He's amazing. Also, the actor who plays Mr. B (as well as a number of other characters), is hilarious in every role. The theater is small, which is great because there really isn't a bad seat in the house. I am SO sad this is closing, but will definitely be checking out the upcoming Full House parody that's taking its place. I saw it almost 2 years ago and saw it again last night. We also saw the Full House Parody. Full House parody was wayyyy funnier. Uncle Joey and Michelle had us dying laughing the whole time. I don't understand why this show has such a high review. It's absolutely awful. It was too raunchy, inappropriate, and ridiculous. They lost me when they did the boner number. Ehh. 5 of us went, all in our 30's all big SBTB fans when we were younger. We all said at the end, fun but not really that great. The actors were great, the plotline was good but the writing was pretty hackey. They kept going really raunchy which got boring and feels like where bad comedy writing generally goes because they're hoping for shock laughs. You can include sexual references, including really raunchy ones, but if that's 80% of the show it's going to feel like it was written by teenageers who are still giggly and nervous about actual sex and believe that everyone is as shocked by sex as they still are. Saw this show last night. A different person, Amanda Nicholas, played Jessie. Overall, the show was very good. I liked Saved By the Bell enough that I got every reference they made. Some parts of the show were better than others. I'll start with the weak: Slater was not written well at all. The plotline involving that character was his struggle with his sexuality, and they basically made him gay. I would have been fine with that if there was anything in the show to suggest that. A parody works when it derives its humor from the source material. Nothing in Saved By the Bell even implied that Slater was gay, so to have the character have that kind of struggle hurt the show. The jokes were eh, and they were constantly shoved down the audience's throat, but because the source material wasn't there, it didn't work for me. The use of Tori however, worked very well. The character was played by the same guy who played Belding, and here, having a guy in drag was funny. It just didn't work with Slater. Gay humor can be funny, but not when it's forced. Slater was a straight, skirt chasing jock. It made no sense to make him gay. So moving on--because a different actress was used to play Jessie, they had to have a different actress play the role that was played by Nicholas. She played a couple of parts, but notably Violet Bickerstaff, aka Tori Spelling. That girl NAILED it. The mannerisms, the voice, the snorting, and the writing--THAT is a parody. The role of Zack was decent, but I guess given what they were doing, I expected him to have a bigger role. Kelly was ok. Nothing awesome, but had some very funny material. Screetch was VERY good. Good impression, good mannerisms, and good likeness. Would have liked to see the role expanded. Lisa Turtle was VERY well cast as well. I enjoyed her role, and her part in the beauty pageant scene was hilarious. But for me, the show was stolen by Jessie, who was a SUBSTITUTE. I can't believe that the actual actress could have been better, and having seen the pictures, I'm glad I got the sub. Assuming everything else was equal, Amanda Nicholas looked so much like Elizabeth Berkeley that it made her performance that much funnier. The show is worth it just to see her. This show actually pulled a tear out of my eye. It was flagrantly hilarious, I havent seen anything so damn funny in a long time. They gave Bayside a hefty dose of testosterone and vulgarity, chopped in some broadwayesque tunes, and threw in a dash of soft porn; I don't know what all of that equals, but I liked it.There was rarely a dull moment as the cast went through various scenes, each with its own song and dance, during their daunty task to save the "Max" while exploring the sexual undertones of each bayside character. I occasionly saw the original show when it was originally broadcast but the references here were put together well enough to piece together the storyline. A great treat for Saved by the Bell fans or those who love gritty and downright dirty comedy. Very good performances buy the cast. If you like raw dirty comedy, can appreciate songs with continuous f-word bombs, then this will be a treat. Definitely not for the sensitive. read more

I was a fan of this TV show when I was a teenager and for two years now I've been really wanting to see this play and relive my teenage years. I even won free tickets from them and I was excited. I won it by giving my email address on their website. However, the show was so horrible because it was extremely raunchy. It was almost like watching fully dressed porn stars. The actors were using profanity. After the trapper keeper/boner number, me and my wife had enough and we just walked out. We left after only 15 minutes. I know this is suppose to be the parody of Saved By The Bell but I really think they crossed the line big time. The worst part is that it was not even funny. Ok. First of all understand that this is a PARODY. This is not a musical version of Saved By The Bell. This is an over the top, sometimes raunchy, a little tacky, unrefined, ridiculous rendition of the students of Bayside...as it is intended to be. If you KNOW that going in you should be fine. The musical pokes fun at Saved By The Bell, and if you watched it growing up then you know it is ripe for poking fun at. This show is a non-stop laugh attack. So like Ruggy J, I am a pretty big SBTB fan. You might even call me a little obsessed. I can name a good amount of the episodes by their official name, recite quotes from memory for days, beat basically everybody that challenges me at trivia, etc etc etc. I grew up watching the show every day after school on TBS at 5:05 and 5:35 with my older brother and sister (bonding time), and to this day we still joke about how cheezy slash amazing it was and have quote wars to keep our knowledge in tip-top shape. With that being said, I went into Bayside The UnMusical last week with very high expectations, hoping that this would be one of the best hours of my life. While some moments were great, others were not, so I felt compelled to write this review to share my thoughts: PROS: -Before the show started there were clips running on a big screen. This was genius and really got me and my friends in the mood. -Jessie: AMAZING resemblance. Loved the double french twist hairdo and the scrunched boots. I had to do a double take a few times! -Lisa: Outfits were perfect and the top hat with polka dots was so accurate. Where did you find that thing?! -Zack: Time out moments were great and spot on. The jeans looked like you ripped them right off of Mark Paul Gosselar's sweet buns in 1992. -Slater sitting backwards in his chair at the Max - PERFECT ROOM FOR IMPROVEMENT: -Diversity of jokes/stereotypes: There was so much potential here to diversify the jokes/quotes/references, and I found myself being disappointed every time I heard things being repeated. For example, Kelly saying that she is poor, Jessie saying that she is addicted to caffeine pills (there is SO much more to her character than that one episode!), and Screech saying "zoinks." I was also hoping for a few more spot-on quotes throughout the show. Maybe legally you can't do much of that, which I get, but I was really hoping for more moments like Jessie's interpretive dance performance in the Miss Bayside pageant (i.e. in that scene, Mr Belding could have sang the original Miss Bayside song, Kelly could have sang Blue Moon, Screech could have done magic and/or worn a tuxedo). I was imagining quotes and actions that could have fit in so perfectly, but seldom did that occur. -Tighten up the chairs in the theater: the average-sized guy sitting next to me would wobble our entire row every time he let out a laugh I get it though, it's a parody, and don't get me wrong, I laughted out loud--A LOT. But writers, if you are out there reading this and want to beef up your future shows with more accurate content, I am seriously happy to help. Seriously. read more

Extremely disgusting and boring jokes. Plus they are pushing you to buy the souvenirs so bad that it looks very cheap and desperate. Is a very offensive show full of repetitive jokes. read more

Overall, this is a terrible show. The 1st Act is fairly funny and entertaining. But, the 2nd Act is just horrible. It basically consists of nothing other than crude sex jokes (which aren't funny) and profanity. There is very little to even link the 2nd Act to Saved By The Bell other than the characters' names. I truly hated the experience. read more

This show was hilarious. I had heard it was raunchy, but it wasn't even as bad as I expected. The jokes were so funny and the actors were surprisingly extremely talented. The theatre is small and there isn't a bad seat in the house. The show was very crowed on a Wednesday night. Everyone in our party was laughing hysterically. I was not a huge watcher of saved by the bell, but I got a lot of the jokes and it was funny even if I didn't get them all. Mostly, I was surprised by the talent and humor. read more

We saw it when it first opened and then again this week. I'd heard there had been changes and was excited to see the improved show. What a let down. They had some new cast members that were awesome (Mr. B, Tori Spelling) but the actors that we really loved in the first round weren't in this one; the new folks weren't bad actors but didn't really play the characters as well. In addition to losing some of the actors that really made the show for us, they changed the show significantly. Friends who went this time and were seeing it for the first time said something like, "They were really still trying to figure out what to do for a lot of it, esp the second act," and I was sad to have to agree.
