After thoroughly enjoying Michael Jackson One in Las Vegas, then most recently the movie "Michael", this Broadway production was just okay for me. The first half was very boring but thankfully picked up in the second half, specifically when the Thriller set started. Michael is portrayed in three different ages throughout the play, a lot of times intertwined with each other which was tastefully blended. Young Michael was great. Young man Michael captured his speaking voice the closest but didn't resemble him at all. Adult Michael, we all had to get used to his exaggeratedly high and feminine speaking voice but visually he nailed it the best, along with the dancing and live singing. Actor playing Dad Joe didn't resemble him either but mom Katherine was close. SPOILER ALERT: I was bummed they didn't perform the "lean" during Smooth Criminal. That would've been the cherry on top. Oh well. TIP: The ushers were highly aggressive with phone usage during the play which was great. VENUE: The Neil Simon Theatre is a classy and intimate space with mezzanine seats that put us almost in the front row. OVERALL: Any MJ fan should enjoy this. read more

This show made me feel alive, took me back in time where days were free and time stood still. I cried my eyes out to say the least as well as laughed (& had to sing along a few times). Spectacular performance of Michael! Actually so real, it was heart wrenching. Both my girlfriend and I went and we are 53 & 54 years old. - the only ones who dressed up. Lmao. The best part of the show is the at the very last scene when they recreated the opening of the Dangerous tour. It feels like he's actually on stage and we have all warped back in time and he's about to perform. I literally got teary eyed because it was a little too real. The whole show is worth that last closing scene when he steps on stage. It's pure magic. That's about as close as you can get - I do wish the show was just more of the actual performances but it was fun. Don't sit in the balcony or sides you will miss parts of the show. read more

I personally am not a big broadway goer and have fallen asleep in shows before. But this one was pretty good. The performers were fantastic. The actors who portrayed MJ had great voices and really did the KOP justice. The dancing made me want to practice my MJ moves when I get home. The story and song choices were well put together. We caught the matinee and bought our tickets at the tkts booth by 47th and broadway for a deep discount an hour before the show. In fact, the price dropped as we were at the window before buying tickets. Probably Lu saved at least $100 per ticket. read more

Last night, I visited the Neil Simon theater to watch MJ the musical on Broadway. It was amazing and fun. I enjoyed all the songs that were included such as the popular smooth criminal and thriller. The show portrayed the life of Michael Jackson as well as his claim to fame. My friend and I were seated in the Orchestra on row R. This was on the right side of the theater, but our view of the stage was decent nonetheless.There was ample legroom in the venue. My only complaint was that some parts of the Music ran too slowly and were irrelevant to the plot. I still highly recommend this musical as it has won 4 Tony awards and has been made popular amongst the other jukebox musicals. read more

I am ashamed to admit that I originally had no interest in seeing MJ. However one of the besties wanted to see to it for her birthday. I managed to snag tickets, admittedly a little begrudgingly, but that's what friends do for each other. It was a cold Wednesday night in January, we found parking and grabbed some grub before the show. We then headed over and were a few minutes behind as we lost sight of the time. We were ushered in and to our seats right away. We immediately jumped into the show and were captivated. Needless to say I loved it! I don't want to give anything away but they way the show it setup and the format of the story telling really appealed to me. I truly felt, albeit incorrectly, that MJ would just be another impersonator situation. If you've ever been to any restore or even down 42nd street you have seen your fair share of Michael Jackson enthusiasts/impersonators. My assumption was I have no interest in seeing that on Broadway. Happy to say I was wrong. Great Show! Just A Note: Moonwalk your butt to go see MJ the Musical if you haven't already. This is a must see Broadway show!!! My family and I came to see the Wednesday matinee show at 2pm. The show had sold out tickets so the line entering was very long but it also moved quickly. Soon everyone were directed and seated. The restroom is downstairs. Concession stand and MJ souvenirs can also be purchased downstairs. The show began promptly and soon we were entertained in awe by the entire cast and especially the understudy that played MJ. Wow, talk about the singing, dancing, acting, his movements and looks - makes me feel like MJ is alive and in front of me. We sat in orchestra seats and 3rd row from the stage. It was definitely well worth the purchase of these more expensive seats and be at the front. You just see better eye leveled on the dancers footwork and of course moonwalks! An elegant chandelier adorns the ceiling and the entire playhouse is pristine. The dancing is on another level. What these dancers do will leave you in awe and the singing is Tony Award material. The sound system is INCREDIBLE. The speaker system stares at you, after you are seated, as if it's saying, "buckle up, cause you're in for a wild ride." I really enjoyed this Musical! Myles Frost is the lead Actor who plays adult MJ and he definitely did his thing! He is a huge talent and emulates MJ extremely well, from the singing, to the dancing and mannerisms! I loved the stage set designs, costumes and choreography as well! Especially for the Thriller performance! The entire cast is talented and has a very strong stage presence that naturally commands your attention. You won't be bored for 1 second. There are some scenes that touched on aspects of MJs childhood and troubled relationship with his father, in addition to the controversies. But they were not the narrative of the musical thankfully. If you're an 80s baby and / or a MJ fan, you will appreciate this musical. Just buy your tickets, thank me later and be prepared for some head nodding to Smooth Criminal, Thriller and more..! The staging and overall production are outstanding. And the actors playing MJ were great. Overall, MJ's a great way to spend a couple hours. But, as far as I could tell, they did the moonwalk only a couple times. When at MJ, I think the audience wants to see plenty of moonwalking, and that glove. Not sure why they're in hiding. Michael Jackson was before my time, but I still like the Jackson 5 and his 1980s stuff. So go see MJ and enjoy! One sort of bad taste the show left, however, was all of MJ's whining about his dad making them rehearse hard when they were children. My kid's studying for a standardized exam, and I can tell you that singing and dancing -- and making a living with that -- would appear to be a lot more fun than the slog the rest of us endure, whether it be chemistry as a high schooler, a regular job as an adult, or anything else. And being a pop start pays better. And whatever a pop star says or does, others follow. So I'm not sure I sympathize with the complaining about hitting it big and not appreciating the incredible opportunity that goes with it. read more

Such an amazing show!!!! Went to NY for a girls trip and this definitely had to be on the list. From the stage set to the actors, costumes, lighting effects everything was perfect. What an amazing performance. Loved that the story of Michael Jackson was told in such a unique way while still including his music. Loved that i was able to live in the moment and enjoy the show because of the cellphone policy that was in place no recording or pictures were allowed during the performance. I was blown away by the entire cast; the incredible singing and dancing as well as the superb acting. They performed all the biggest hits. I've always been a huge MJ fan. The show transported me back in time! The play begins with MJ rehearsing for his 1992 Dangerous World Tour. The role of Michael Jackson is played by three actors - Little Michael, Michael and MJ. We get glimpses into his childhood and his early years with the Jackson Five, then Michael into his teens and twenties and finally MJ, the King of Pop played by Roman Banks. Roman was able to portray MJ perfectly, he let us see MJ's passion, his creative process and his heart. He even sounded like MJ, very soft spoken. Roman captured MJ's dance moves and singing that it felt like I was watching Michael. The show is emotional and exciting. It is the best musical I've seen, brilliant and amazing...BRAVO! read more

We really enjoyed this musical... The premise for MJ the Musical is a group of rehearsals prior to his Dangerous World Tour in 1992. With a reporter & cameraman from MTV doing interviews with the king of pop. He would reminisce about all his influences in music growing up. From the very early days of the Jackson 5 to his solo career. All the major players are here. From Berry Gordy to Quincy Jones. The music itself is a little out of order. Going back and forth through the years. I gotta say that part about his Thriller album with the choreography is OUTSTANDING. Elijah Rhea Johnson making his broadway debut did a great job playing the adult MJ. The King of Pop's music is timeless. There was a 8 year old kid sitting in front of us with his Mom. Standing and dancing pretty much the whole show. And no, he didn't block my view from our seats. My point being MJ's music is still popular even after all these years. I do definitely recommend MJ The Musical. Believe this play is leaving broadway at the end of 2023. Then touring in London next year. Enjoy the show. read more

Wow, love the music. We attended the Sunday matinee, which was all sold out. Every seat in the house taken. There were some tickets available for the 7 pm show on Ticketmaster and TKTS (30 percent off) but nowadays, fewer people want to be in the city after dark. Matinees allow a show and then early dinner, and you are back home by 8 pm. Too many crazies at night, until the mayor makes the city safe again. I even avoided the subway by walking and got 14,000 steps in (5 miles)! Get your tickets early for the best seats at lower prices. Whether you like Michael Jackson or not (due to the Neverland controversy), he was one of the greatest musicians of all time. The moves in the musical are incredible. This show featured creative ways to make it a story with the music of MJ mixed in. The star of the show was unexpectedly the young Michael, who had a phenomenal voice and sounded just like him. Was expecting so much more. In terms of plot, dancing, execution, and artistic performance. Only two scenes in two hours that stood out and took the breath away. The rest felt underwhelming. The artist in the lead role of MJ didn't dazzle. Voice and dancing left desiring more. Maybe, the original MJ is a tough act to replicate. "MJ" is the one of the top Broadway shows I have attended. Having grown up during the 80s, all the music is familiar and the show, in general, is well-produced and filled with talent across the board. In particular, young Michael, adult Michael, and mom Katherine were phenomenal! The show delved into some aspects of the Jackson Family's life which were not pleasant but didn't dive too deeply into some of the controversies - which I was okay with them not doing. The in-scene transitions with actors changing roles "on the spot" were done well. The audience was into the show from start to finish... ...although some middle-aged to older "ladies" couldn't follow the no cameras/filming policy. As a result, the ushers near us had to repeatedly come down the aisle and tell these inconsiderate attendees to follow the rules. And in some cases, the ushers had to shine their flashlights on these individuals to get their attention. Each time, it distracted those behind or near these rulebreakers as the ushers ended up in our line of sight far too often. I don't fault the ushers for doing their job - it's just ridiculous that folks who should know better can't follow the rules. It would be nice if such folks just got escorted out, especially if they refuse to stop after the 1st request to cease. read more
